Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

This paper presents a study on a fully electro-optical (EO) autonomous target detection system for UAVs. This study was led in the framework of a partnership between the Italian Aerospace Research Center (CIRA) and the University of Naples, within a CIRA project named TECVOL, aimed at developing the technologies needed to support flight autonomy. The selected detection algorithm is based on the Optical Flow technique. In particular, two methods are implemented and tested on real video sequences of flying aircrafts, which are the Horn and Schunck's and the Lucas and Kanade's algorithms. Target detection is based on motion field evaluation, so that pixels with a statistically different velocity from the background are recognized as objects. Numerical results show that the LK technique guarantees better performances, and it is more suitable for real-time implementation. In fact, in the case of fixed background, no miss-detections (MD) and false-detections (FD) can be noticed. Imposing a motion of the optical axis in order to simulate camera wobbling effects, again zero MD are measured, while on average 4,4 FD/frame are observed. However, detection performance gets worse for increasing optical axis oscillation.

This paper focuses on optimizing product-mix problem using real-world data of a food processing industry. The extensively used LP model has been remodeled using fuzzy sets and applied to the real-world problem. The developed LP model is able to consider the fuzziness in the parameters and to tackle the presence of multiple objective functions. The addition of ferric hydroxide to sludge from a municipal anaerobic digester stimulated the rate of methanogenesis from canola oil when the initial oil concentration was high (4600 mg/L;P 0.05). Similar trends were observed when oleic acid, a fatty acid that is a major component of canola oil triglycerides, was provided, but the effects were statistically significant only when the initial concentration of ferric hydroxide was also high (18 g/L;P = 0.015). Iron reduction occurred when ferric hydroxide was added to microcosms containing anaerobic digester sludge, but the extent of ferrous iron production was much less in acetate-amended microcosms than in those that were provided with canola oil or oleic acid. Methanogenesis and acetate consumption were completely inhibited when the initial acetate concentration was approximately 5000 mg/L, regardless of the initial ferric hydroxide concentration. The main effect of ferric hydroxide in this system appears to have been a result of stimulation of the rate of fatty acid oxidation.
