Previous research has identified significant reductions in infiltration rates in disturbed urban soils. More than 150 prior tests were conducted in predominately sandy and clayey urban soils in the Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama, areas. Infiltration in clayey soils was found to be affected by an interaction of soil moisture and compaction, while infiltration in sandy soils was affected by soil compaction alone. The tests reported here were conducted under more controlled laboratory conditions and represent a wider range of soil textures and specific soil density values. © 2004 ASCE.

Over the past five years, Rose-Hulman has invested over $40M dollars creating an environment to encourage entrepreneurship in its graduates. Components of the educational, organizational, and physical infrastructure are described. These components include a course in entrepreneurship, internships with entrepreneurial companies, the Technology and Entrepreneurship Development (TED) program, Rose-Hulman Ventures (RHV), and the John T. Myers Center for Technological Research with Industry. Case studies of recent successes are presented.

Presents analytical findings of sick building situations in Sydney’s open-plan offices. Aims to ascertain facilities managers’ perceptions of sick building impacts on discrete aspects of workspace management, with a view to raising general awareness. A total of 100 open-plan offices in the Sydney CBD were studied, and collated data analysed using partial correlation. Significant associations were found between sick building syndrome and certain aspects. However, management control played moderating roles in some of the associations. Concludes that, with management control, sick building syndrome may be perceived as critical to only a limited workspace aspect. The implication is for sick building syndrome to be largely generalised as inconsequential to many aspects of work environment in Sydney, probably following the Hawthorne management ideology. © 2001, MCB UP Limited

Lessons learned from the evolution of US water policy over two centuries of rapid population growth, economic expansion and urban development may shed light on promising approaches to issues in other areas of the world. An explanation of the major philosophical and legal underpinnings of water quantity and water quality policies that have evolved in the US federal-state system is presented. Other areas of the world may benefit from mistakes made during the evolution of US water policy in the areas of institutional reform, improved processes for conflict resolution, and increased use of modern planning and decision making procedures. © 2001 Elsevier science Ltd. Formed in late 1998, the Multinational Alliance for the Advancement of Organisational Excellence (MAAOE) sustains the vision of creating, disseminating, and applying knowledge relevant to the advancement of organizational excellence. MAAOE advances next-generation quality management characterized by multinational, multidisciplinary, and performance focused. Presently numbering over 300 individuals representing a diverse group of disciplinary backgrounds and representing more than 20 nations on 6 continents, the alliance's participant group is consistent with that vision. Supporting MAAOE visions are three strategic intentions, each with several supporting goals and objectives. This article investigates and establishes MAAOE's second strategic intention, that of the knowledge dissemination relevant to the advancement of organizational excellence.

Utilization of root cause failure analysis in the investigation of marine deck fitting failures

作者： Huff, DS Lynaugh, KM David S. Huff graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S.M.E. in 1972 and a M.S. in technology management in 1995. Prior to government service he worked for Newport News Shipbuilding as a fluid systems engineer and for Gibbs & Cox as a project engineer. Mr. Huff entered government service in 1977 with the Military Sealift Command Engineering Operations Division then as a construction representative and finally as deputy director ship design and construction. He then moved to NAVSEA in 1989 as assistant project manager on the conversion of AO-177 oilers to AO (JUMBO). From 1993 through 2000 he was assistant project manager for the construction of T-AKR-300 Class of Strategic Sealift RO/RO ships at Avondale. Currently Mr. Huff is manager of the Advanced Projects Group within the PEO EXW Auxiliary Boats and Crafts Program Office. Kevin M. Lynaugh obtained his naval architecture and marine engineering degree from University of California Berkeley in 1984. He obtained his Master's degree in science and engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in 1997 with a dual major in program management and operations management. He has been with NAVSEA Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division for over 16 years. He spent four years with the Hydromechanics Division computerizing the Model Design Group two years with the Large Cavitation Channel Project as a project engineer six years with the Ship Building Technologies Department as a task area manager managing research programs the past 3 ½ years with the Strategic Sealift Program as the ship design manager for Avondale's new con-struction and as the deputy assistant program manager for post delivery and NASSCO's new construction. Currently Mr. Lynaugh is the on-site ship design manager for LHD-8 at Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula Mississippi.

Cracking was discovered in the openings of cargo deck tie down fittings on ships under construction. There was a distinct possibility that these cracks could propagate through the fittings and into the strength deck plating, affecting the ships hull integrity. With more than 14,000 fittings installed on each ship, the appearance of approximately 400 cracks at the mid-ship area of the main and lower decks raised production and operational concerns. This paper will discus the successful application of a Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) methodology employed by a Corrective Action Team (CAT) establish to solve the problem. Through their efforts and the systematic application of RCFA, various failure hypotheses were validated or discounted and consensus was achieved on the appropriate corrective action.

The purpose of the Berkeley project management process maturity model and an associated assessment methodology is to help organizations and people accomplish higher and more sophisticated PM maturity by a systematic and incremental approach. It measures, locates, and compares an organization's current PM maturity level. The primary advantage of using this model and industries, whereas other maturity models have specific audiences like software development or new product development. The maturity model and assessment technique has already been used to benchmark PM practices and processes in 43 companies. With it, they have also identified relationships between levels of organizational effectiveness and actual project performance data. The model is continuously being refined to reflect advances in their PM knowledge. Some of the most recent improvements include evaluating replicability of project success, which is the focus of this paper and presentation. © 2000 IEEE.

This paper intends to discuss the concepts of knowledge, information and data and their use on a Competitive Intelligence process. An information concept is presented and the information science influences on the way that it has been used, as so data gathering as internal expert service process support. A relationship between the Competitive Intelligence process approach and the use of the established resources for information process using electronic media is displayed. There is a difference among data, information and knowledge taking the reader up to the Competitive Intelligence and Knowledge management concepts found at current literature over this subject. A user connection to knowledge is described in order to make a distinction between the knowledge universe and the user universe, taking the recorded knowledge as a “bridge” connecting both universes. The knowledge universe access way is taken by the language that is in use, while at user universe is represented by the retrieval system that is adopted. A discussion over the frontiers and aspects of each universe is held, as well as the condition for inter-relationship, resulting in an idealistic representation for the user and knowledge relationship. Finally, this paper presents a few points that illustrate the Information science contributions for the Knowledge management process.
