Spatial characteristics and health risks assessments of trace metal pollution from road dusts in the industrialized city of Bangladesh

This study aimed to explore the presence of trace metallic pollutants and its associated health hazards in street dust from Gazipur City, one of Bangladesh's heavily industrialized urban centers. Thirty samples of street dust were collected, considering the city's industrial activity and population density. These samples underwent analysis using ICP-MS to detect potential toxic trace metals. Subsequently, the level of pollution and the associated human health risks were evaluated. The mean concentration of Bi (3.56 ± 2.10 mg/kg), Cd (0.71 ± 0.29 mg/kg), Co (4.03 ± 1.09 mg/kg), Cr (29.05 ± 25.44 mg/kg), Cu (17.36 ± 40.56 mg/kg), Ga (134.96 ± 45.39 mg/kg), In (2.25 ± 1.32 mg/kg), Mn (195.13 ± 191.15 mg/kg), Ni (20.31 ± 19.67 mg/kg), Pb (16.28 ± 3.68 mg/kg), Ti (1.72 ± 1.51 mg/kg) and Zn (44.96 ± 22.40 mg/kg). The element-specific environmental indices represent that the geo-accumulation index follows the descending order In (3.55 ± 1.54) > Bi (3.48 ± 1.08) > Ga (2.51 ± 0.48) > Cd (1.06 ± 0.73) > Pb (−0.23 ± 0.33), while the contamination factor fallows the descending order In (22.54 ± 12.57) > Bi (20.96 ± 12.13) > Ga (8.99 ± 2.97) > Cd (3.53 ± 1.41) > Pb (1.30 ± 0.29) > Zn (0.64 ± 0.31). The average calculated pollution load index is 0.68. The results of the dendrogram showed that those toxic trace metallic pollutants mainly originate from two different sources. The results of PCA (principal component analysis) also support the results of the dendrogram, which illustrate that the corrosion and weathering of automobile parts and other metal materials are the main contributors of Cd, Co, Cr, and Pb. In contrast, the use of leaded gasoline, corrosion in car surfaces and road paint are the main contributors of lead in road dust. The hazard index (HI) showed that Cr, Co, and Pb impose moderate to high non-carcinogenic human health risks. Statistical trends of rainfall (annual and seasonal rainfalls) in Kerala, India were characterised using the 44-years (1980–2023) data of Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) version 2. Monthly rainfall data were collected from the selected fifty locations which represent the state as a whole, and the collected data were then categorised into annual as well as seasonal (winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon) datasets based on the classification proposed by Indian Meteorological Organisation (IMD). Lag-1 autocorrelation, modified Mann Kendall (mMK), Pettitt test and Theil-Sen’s slope methods were used to determine the statistical characteristics of rainfalls in Kerala. Mean rainfalls were 3124 mm, 66 mm, 527 mm, 1667 mm and 862 mm, respectively, for annual, winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon periods. mMK based statistical trend analysis revealed an overall decreasing trend characteristics in annual (-0.54 mm.y⁻¹), monsoon (-1.20 mm.y⁻¹), and post-monsoon (-0.93 mm.y⁻¹) seasons whereas winter and summer rainfalls showed an increasing trend (0.67 mm.y⁻¹ and 3.40 mm.y⁻¹, respectively) for the state as a single unit. Pettitt test indicated four dominant periods of change in rainfall characteristics in the study area that spanned over the decades of 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010, in which major changes in annual and seasonal rainfalls were occurred during 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s. Theil-Sen’s slope-based estimation of rate of change in rainfall showed an average variation of -4.33 mm.y⁻¹, 0.17 mm.y⁻¹, 6.27 mm.y⁻¹, -6.54 mm.y⁻¹ and − 3.28 mm.y⁻¹ for annual, winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, respectively. Lilies are popular in the global flower market, but consumers often lack information about specific varieties. To address this issue, this paper proposes a computer recognition platform based on the Vision Transformer (ViT) architecture. The proposed platform uses an improved vision transformer (ViT) architecture to classify different types of lilies, allowing consumers to access information and names of various Lilium species. The experimental results show that the proposed lily classification model achieved a 96.4% accuracy rate in classifying six lily species.

Identifying otter conservation hotspots in human-dominated coastal wetlands of peninsular Thailand

Species conservation in human-dominated landscapes poses more challenges because not only species ecology needs to be understood but also humans' dimension needs to be accounted for. This study aimed to identify conservation hotspots for Asian Small-clawed Otter and Smooth-coated Otter in coastal wetlands of southern Thailand. Camera trap surveys were conducted between 2016 and 2020. Occupancy model was applied to estimate probability of occupancy of two otters in relation to landscape characteristics and human factors. Then Bayesian Belief Network was applied to generated anthropogenic threat levels which was then related with occupancy probabilities to derive conservation hotspots. In total, 1137 camera-trap locations were set up for 26,387 trap-days. Smooth-coated Otter has higher occupancy probabilities on the Andaman where less disturbed wetlands still remain in larger proportion compared to the Gulf. Small-clawed Otter, in contrast, has higher occupancy on the Gulf. Smooth-coated Otter showed strong association with natural habitats, while Asian Small-clawed Otter better adapted with small isolated habitats. A majority of conservation hotspots was located along the Andaman coast and were not protected. In conclusion, otters can adapt and survive in human-dominated modified landscape;however, maintaining good quality of natural habitats and mitigating conflicts still be the main priority for successful otter conservation. © 2025 The Authors

The industry is rapidly transitioning from the 4.0 era to the 5.0 era, prompting renewed interest among scholars in scheduling problems. They allow operations to process and assemble various components simultaneously. This bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive understanding of the diverse research perspectives on the potential challenges of integrated scheduling within the framework. We identified 357 Scopus articles and analysed co-occurrence keyword (CNK) by VOSViewer tools and Global Citation Score (GCS) by Scopus tools. The research data obtained from 1993 to 2023 mainly in the subject areas of Engineering, Computer Science, Maths, and others. CNK identified six cluster keywords, and nine most cited articles based on normalised GCS. These results contribute to our understanding of the development of scheduling algorithms, shifting from an emphasis on manufacturing transfers to contemporary demand-centric research directions. Furthermore, this research provides a valuable perspective for policymakers, plant personnel, and manufacturing managers to make informed decisions.

This research presents the development and evaluation of a breath alcohol measurement device utilizing the MQ-3 alcohol sensor and an Arduino Nano-based control system. The primary objective was to design an accurate and reliable system for detecting breath alcohol concentration, with real-time feedback provided through an OLED display and an active buzzer for alerts. The device operates by measuring the alcohol concentration in the breath and converting the sensor data into parts per million (ppm). When the alcohol concentration exceeds the predefined threshold of 5% ABV, the system activates an audible alarm via the buzzer and displays the corresponding ppm value on the OLED screen. A series of tests were conducted with eight volunteers who consumed varying amounts of alcohol. The results demonstrated the system's high accuracy and responsiveness, with the ability to detect alcohol concentrations ranging from safe levels to dangerous thresholds. The device was tested multiple times to ensure consistency and minimize errors, with the final results confirming its effectiveness in providing reliable alcohol measurements. This system holds significant potential for applications in monitoring alcohol levels in drivers and individuals involved in safety-critical activities. The research underscores the importance of real-time alcohol detection systems in enhancing public safety and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Autonomous driving technology relies heavily on sensor data for environment perception. Heterogeneous sensors such as lidar, radar, and camera have their own strengths and limitations. Therefore, relying on any single sensor would restrict the effectiveness of autonomous driving technology. However, integrating data from such heterogeneous sensors poses challenges due to differences in their representations. This article outlines a deep learning network aimed at designing modality-agnostic multi-modal fusion architecture. We study sensor data from different modalities and learn fine-grained representations using modality-specific feature encoders independently. Then, a multimodal attention-based network (MMA-Net) is proposed to fuse the data from heterogeneous modalities. The proposed MMA-Net fuses multi-modal sensor data by jointly exploiting the inter-modality and intra-modality relationships among camera, lidar, and radar sensors. The effectiveness of the proposed multi-modal fusion architecture is demonstrated using 2-D object detection metrics through extensive experiments on a dataset generated using the CARLA simulator.

Deep-Learning Approach for An Analysis of Real-estate Prices and Transactions

Research on the study of houses, condominiums and buildings in Taiwan’s metropolitan areas continues to be an important area of research. In real estate forecasting and analysis, methods such as statistical analysis and questionnaire data collection are widely used. However, when multidimensional data is considered, these methods are time-consuming and inadequate. This study aimed to build a real estate forecasting model that can adapt to a changing environment. Data were collected from public government databases, the collected data were standardized for accurate clustering, an appropriate data clustering algorithm was applied to the standardized data, and cross-statistical analysis was performed to verify the adopted algorithm. We used a deep learning based on autoencoder algorithm to increase the accuracy of the clustering analysis. A double-bottom map particle swarm optimization (DBM-PSO) clustering algorithm was then used to determine the optimal clustering solution. Cluster analysis and deep learning were conducted on data collected from public websites to understand the factors that led to the sustained increase in housing prices in Taiwan over the past decade. The results of this study indicate that three key factors—the number of real estate transactions, the average unit price of real estate transactions, and the building material and construction index—significantly affected real estate prices in Taiwan. Our results could help researchers and governments to focus on specific aspects of real estate development without being influenced by other related factors. In addition, the relationships between real estate trends and the aforementioned three key factors were determined to obtain valuable information that can enable the Taiwanese government to regulate the property market and prevent excessive growth. Microporous polyimine membranes for efficient separation of liquid hydrocarbon mixtures

Interfacial polymerization has been an industrial standard for preparing desalination membranes. Extending the same concept to molecular separation of organic solvents would be a key enabler for the decarbonization of the chemical and petrochemical industries through energy-efficient crude or biocrude oil fractionation. Here, we report a molecular engineering approach based on acid-catalyzed interfacial polymerization for efficient hydrocarbon separation. The design strategies include (i) changing the linkage from amide to imine and (ii) subsequent introduction of shape-persistent units such as triptycene and spirobifluorene. The prepared polyimine membranes exhibit ultrahigh microporosity and enhanced swelling and plasticization resistance compared with conventional polyamide counterparts. These membranes, which feature fast and selective transport of hydrocarbons, including multicomponent and industrially relevant mixtures, outperform commercial and state-of-the-art benchmark membranes.
