Survival time and success rates of customized prefabricated metal posts: A retrospective study

Statement of problem: The choice of post type is still a controversial issue in dental practice. Furthermore, studies regarding the long-term survival and success of customized prefabricated posts are lacking. Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the longevity of prefabricated metal posts customized to conform to the root canal. Material and methods: Data obtained from the records of patients who received a customized titanium or stainless-steel post at a private dental practice between July 1998 and March 2022 were analyzed. The prefabricated posts were customized by grinding the threads, reducing their length, and tapering them to fit into the existing canals. The relation between survival time and type of tooth and coronal restoration was searched. The Kaplan-Meier test was used for survival time and Cox regression to evaluate factors associated with survival (α=.05). The data were also analyzed for 5-year time intervals. Results: A total of 1791 posts in 1072 patients were available for the study. The mean overall survival time of the posts was 17.33 years. The mean survival time with regard to the coronal restoration was 15.22 years for direct composite resin restorations, 17.21 years for metal-ceramic crowns, 14.94 years for fixed partial dentures, and 12.63 years for removable partial dentures. The survival time for anterior teeth was 13.16 years and 17.53 years for posterior teeth. The success rate of the posts was 97.5%. Conclusions: This retrospective study of customized prefabricated metal posts resulted in a 17-year post survival time and a success rate of 97.5%. © 2025 Editorial Council for The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry

Increased biodegradability, in other words reduced environmental recalcitrance, has the potential to be an important asset in the battle against plastics pollution. It can partially mitigate global plastic leakages into the environment, which is next to their impact on climate change the biggest concern regarding plastics use. Biodegradation should be regarded as an optimal safety net in many applications and should often not be the targeted waste management option for biodegradable plastics. Biodegradability should not preclude reuse or proper recyclability, which are impactful means to reduce the carbon intensity of plastics lifecycles. Despite the added advantages, the market penetration of biodegradable plastics is only very slowly growing. Moreover, policy recommends its use only in limited applications, driven by sometimes-higher cost and limited recyclability. In this article, we posit that arguments against widespread application of biodegradable plastics are largely driven by misperceptions arising from intrinsic limitations of contemporary sustainability assessments and offer an alternative viewpoint that could compensate for this. In general, sustainability assessments fail to properly assess learning curves, often do not take littering potential into account, and are rather conservative with respect to background systems. Hence, recyclability– or better: circularity– judgements often do not resolve the paradoxical situation in which increased market shares lead to easier and more profitable recycling schemes and vice versa. Judging disruptive innovations by incorporating thermodynamics-inspired, less data-intensive, state-based methods, based on, e.g., statistical entropy analysis, into the decision support framework could allow to forecast packaging markets with performant materials that are intrinsically circular, having reduced environmental recalcitrance. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Exploring bus drivers' intentions to collaborate with level 4 autonomous buses: Integrating the technology acceptance model and assemblage theory

As AI proliferates, human-AI collaboration has become necessary in many domains, not least in public transportation, where highly automated, if not fully driverless buses, require human-AI cooperation. However, existing technology acceptance models lack insight into the unique factors that influence acceptance in collaborative human-AI contexts. This study integrates the technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with Assemblage Theory to provide a comprehensive framework that does explicate key mechanisms underlying bus drivers' behavioral intentions toward Level 4 autonomous buses. Drawing upon Assemblage Theory, we conceptualize the driver and the autonomous bus as a human-machine collaborative assemblage. Perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use from TAM are modeled as antecedents, with compatibility and trust from Assemblage Theory as mediators, predicting attitude and behavioral intention. The theoretical model is examined using structural equation modeling on data collected from 719 bus drivers of four major transit companies in Taipei. Results robustly support all hypotheses, with perceived usefulness exhibiting stronger positive effects on trust and compatibility than perceived ease of use. Trust and compatibility positively influenced attitude, which strongly predicted behavioral intention to cooperate with Level 4 autonomous bus introduction. The empirical findings show TAM is enriched by the integration of Assemblage Theory concepts, extending both theories' ability to facilitate autonomous mobility human-AI collaboration. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Application of heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction with modified zeolite for removal of antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and antibiotic-resistant genes from swine farm wastewater

The heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction with modified zeolite was introduced for the removal of antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) to reduce environmental impact of the substance residues in swine farm effluent. The heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction with 100 g/L of the modified zeolite and 2 mM H2O2 could completely remove amoxicillin (AMX), tetracycline (TC), and tiamulin (TIA) in the swine farm effluent within 30 min. However, the antibiotic removal in the swine farm effluent was slower than in the ultrapure water. The heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction removed approximately 45–60% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and reduced the dissolved organic matter (DOM) sizes in the swine farm effluent. The large molecular size humic-like DOM co-existing in the swine farm effluent could probably decelerate the antibiotic removal via competitive adsorption and oxidation. To inactivate high-tolerant AMX-resistant E. coli, the heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction required 3-fold less exposure time than the H2O2 oxidation. No regrowth of the high-tolerant AMX-resistant E. coli was observed when the exposure time of the heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction was longer than 6 h. The heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction required the exposure time of 24 h to reduce the blaTEM genes, the AMX-resistant genes, of the high-tolerant AMX-resistant E. coli to the level of lower than the limit of detection. The results suggest that different reaction times are required for the removal of antibiotics (within 30 min), ARB (over 6 h), and ARGs (within 24 h). Furthermore, the heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction with the modified zeolite is a promising technology for sequential and efficient removal of antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs residues in swine farm effluent before being discharged into the environment. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Facile fabrication of hierarchical porous electrospun poly (L-lactic acid) fiber membrane via swelling-crystallization for oil adsorption

Electrospun biodegradable fibers have been attracting significant attention in various applications. Introducing a porous structure into these fibers enhances their surface area and thus extends their applications. Here, we report a facile route to produce a highly hierarchical porous fiber structure from biodegradable electrospun solid poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) fibers by acetone-induced swelling-crystallization. By controlling the concentration of acetone solution and immersion time, the highly hierarchical porous PLLA fiber membrane with a very large surface area of 138.06 m2 g−1 and a high pore volume of 0.593 cm3 g−1 was fabricated. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the porous PLLA fiber membrane presented a high oil adsorption capacity of up to 27.0 g g−1, surpassing the performance of solid electrospun PLLA fiber membranes by approximately 34 %. The highly oil-adsorptive porous PLLA fiber membrane outperformed many conventional porous materials. Therefore, the hierarchical porous PLLA fiber membrane has high potential as an eco-friendly material for high-oil adsorption applications. © 2025 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry

Evaluation of prostate movement trend using individual patient anatomical information for prostate volumetric modulated arc therapy

Organ movement during prostate cancer radiotherapy can significantly impact treatment accuracy. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of prostate movement during the treatment period with pretreatment patient anatomical information. A total of 103 patients with prostate cancer who underwent volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) were included. Lesser pelvis space around the prostate and prostate volumes were contoured and measured using a radiotherapy treatment planning system (RTPS) and classified into 2 groups (< median, ≧ median). The median and standard deviation (SD) inter- and intra-fraction prostate movement during treatment was calculated in the anterior-posterior (AP), left-right (LR), and superior-inferior (SI) directions, and the correlation for anatomical information was analyzed. Statistical significance testing and percentile analysis were utilized to assess the inter- and intra-fraction prostate movement of 2 groups based on the parameters above. Significant differences in prostate volume (inter: AP, LR, and SI) were observed between the 2 groups. The SD of inter- and intra-fraction prostate movement in the LR direction exhibited low positive correlations with lesser pelvis space around the prostate and prostate volume (r > 0.3). In the 5th to 95th percentile range of prostate movement, patients with a prostate volume ≧ 30 mL showed an increase of >10% (inter: AP, SI, LR). These findings suggest that pelvic space around the prostate and prostate volume are correlated with prostate movement during radiotherapy, indicating their importance in optimizing prostate margins in treatment planning. © 2025

Massive plywood panels and manufacturers: a comprehensive systematic literature review and case study

Massive timber is a category of heavy green engineered products, manufactured from glued or glued-free processes, to be used in more predictable structural performance in industrialized walls, floors and frames. Massive plywood panel emerges as a novelty for mass timber construction and, therefore, little information is scientifically available. Aligning with the Sustainable Development Goal 9: ‘Industry, innovation and infrastructures’, this study aims to verify this literature gap and raise topics regarding massive plywood panels using a structured systematic review literature. From bibliometric analysis, 12 journal papers, 10 conference papers and an editorial were prospected using Scopus and Web of Science databases. A predominance of studies from English language nations was confirmed. Seismic and monotonic performance of massive plywood are frequent topics in these investigations, whose results have indicated a promising scenario for construction. As no study on industry is available, a case study on massive plywood was sequentially developed to discuss features of commercial panels and perspectives of respective global industry. The North American Freres Engineered Wood and Finnish Metsä Wood are the only active manufacturers, and their massive plywood panels have been manufactured from modern production technologies and environmentally certified practices to be applied in low- and high-rise industrialized buildings.

Heavy metal and microplastic pollutions are prevalent in freshwater ecosystems, with many freshwater bodies being contaminated by one or both of these pollutants. Recent studies reported extreme detections of Cd, Pb and Zn, high concentrations of Cr, Pb and Cu and microplastics acting as vectors of pollutants, including heavy metals. Mayflies can serve as bioindicators of heavy metal contamination in freshwater ecosystems because changes in their community structure, physiology, and behaviour can reflect and help predict the concentrations of metals in these environments. This review discusses the ecological alterations induced by tissue metal concentration in mayflies and other macroinvertebrates. As sensitive taxa to heavy metal contamination, mayflies can reflect the impacts of this pollution through their ethology and relationship to the substrate, highlighting issues such as eutrophication, alterations in community structure, inhibitory effects and sediment toxicity. Mayflies are also highly affected by microplastic exposure, which leads to ingestion, bioaccumulation, biomagnification, habitat and community alteration, behavioural changes, physiology alteration and toxicity. Mayflies bioindication metrics for assessing the impact of heavy metals and microplastics include the examination of community alteration, functional feeding behaviour, molecular structure, dietary and toxicity impacts, bioaccumulation and biomagnification and biomarkers. Current challenges for the utilization of mayflies as bioindicators include temporal variations in sensitivity, lack of universally recognised protocols and need for standardised protocols for microplastic analysis. Additionally, the applicability of mayflies as bioindicators may vary across different ecosystems, emphasising the need for selecting suitable indicators that align with the unique characteristics of the ecosystem. © 2024 The Authors

Re-engineering high risk, high complexity industries through multiple level technological learning - A case study of the world nuclear power industry

Applying lessons learned at the national, the utility, and the plant level, from selected segments of the world-wide nuclear power industry, might facilitate an environmentally acceptable renaissance of the U.S. nuclear power industry through re-engineering it. Elements of this learning from experience process can be found: (a) at the national level in Europe, Japan, and the U.S., (b) at the utility level in two New York State nuclear power utilities, Niagara Mohawk and New York Power Authority, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and Duke Power and Light in the U.S., in Ontario Hydro in Canada, and in the Electricite de France (EdF) in France, and (c) at the plant level in several of these utilities. At the core of all the continuous quality improvement and re-engineering programs, lies this twofold mission: (a) to insulate society from foreseeable and unacceptably high environmental risks, and (b) to continuously improve the design and management of nuclear technology (including nuclear waste management and environmental risk management systems) by learning, learning how to learn, and learning to learn-how-to-learn, both explicitly and tacitly, through feedback from individual and organizational experience.

Orthogonal schemes for bidirectional associative memories

Two issues are addressed in this paper. Firstly, it investigates some important properties of bidirectional associative memories (BAM) and proposes an improved capacity estimate. Those properties are the encoding form of the input pattern pairs as well as their decoding, the orthogonality of the pattern pairs, the similarity of associated patterns, and the density of the pattern pairs. Secondly, it proposes an implementation approach to improve the storage capacity. The approach embraces three proposed methods, i.e., the bipolar-orthogonal augmentation, the set partition, and the combined method. Along with those methods is the construction of the set of bipolar orthogonal patterns.
