This paper describes the incorporation of emerging and sustainable practices in an undergraduate engineering technology manufacturing materials course. Usually, the laboratory component of a manufacturing materials course includes only industrial testing procedures and experiments. The study of laboratory tests is used to characterize the material properties of ceramic, polymeric, and metallic materials and how these material properties influence material selection decisions in design and manufacturing. This paper discusses the development of lectures and experimental modules for providing undergraduate students learning experience in emerging and sustainable issues in manufacturing materials. The course is intended to incorporate an in-depth overview of emerging sustainable issues in manufacturing and industrial resources to reduce the environmental impact of manufactured products. Green energy manufacturing is an emerging field and also provides a sustainable development model for modern manufacturing industries. Sustainable green manufacturing encompasses the design of manufacturing processes to prioritize energy conservation, pollution prevention or reduction, and increased health and safety of communities, employees, and consumers. In this paper, we will discuss key advanced technologies and environmental topics that can be integrated into manufacturing coursework to include sustainability principles. This course has been taught, evaluated, and reviewed to identify barriers to the inclusion of emerging issues into the course manufacturing materials. © American Society for engineering Education, 2015.

Distributed accelerated primal-dual neurodynamic approaches for resource allocation problem

This paper investigates two distributed accelerated primal-dual neurodynamic approaches over undirected connected graphs for resource allocation problems(RAP)where the objective functions are generally *** the help of projection operators,a primal-dual framework,and Nesterov's accelerated method,we first design a distributed accelerated primal-dual projection neurodynamic approach(DAPDP),and its convergence rate of the primal-dual gap is O(1/(t^(2)))by selecting appropriate parameters and initial ***,when the local closed convex sets are convex inequalities which have no closed-form solutions of their projection operators,we further propose a distributed accelerated penalty primal-dual neurodynamic approach(DAPPD)on the strength of the penalty method,primal-dual framework,and Nesterov's accelerated *** on the above analysis,we prove that DAPPD also has a convergence rate O(1/(t^(2)))of the primal-dual *** with the distributed dynamical approaches based on the classical primal-dual framework,our proposed distributed accelerated neurodynamic approaches have faster convergence *** simulations demonstrate that our proposed neurodynamic approaches are feasible and effective.

The paper proposes a Framework to establish the best decision regarding sand reclamation in a foundry using Life Cycle Analysis and Costing techniques. The framework identifies the materials flow of sand and develops a corresponding Life Cycle Inventory Analysis. The Total Economic Life Cycle Costing of sand, including environmental cost components and emission factors, is then derived. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to develop a decision matrix related to alternative technologies and options for disposition of the sand. The Criterion Function approach is then used to establish the best possible option, with respect to reclamation, disposal and the efficacy of appropriate technologies for spent sand recovery.

In this paper, an adaptive inventory management model, which is founded on a forecasting algorithm that utilizes RFID-based state and event data for tracking and dispatching of time sensitive materials in a manufacturing facility, is presented. The impact of integrating RFID technologies with inventory control on the shop floor is discussed. This study compares a traditional, static inventory model with the proposed model on the basis of cost savings, inventory and waste reduction, and decision making complexity. The validity of the proposed model is demonstrated in a simulation environment, which also demonstrates the overall benefits and effectiveness of RFID technologies in providing low cost manufacturing solutions, reduced inventory levels, and lower overall waste. © 2005 IEEE.

We are studying the manufacturing performance of semiconductor wafer fabrication plants in the US, Asia, and Europe. There are great similarities in production equipment, manufacturing processes, and products produced at semiconductor fabs around the world. However, detailed comparisons over multi-year intervals show that important quantitative indicators of productivity, including defect density (yield), major equipment production rates, wafer throughput time, and effective new process introduction to manufacturing, vary by factors of 3 to as much as 5 across an international sample of 28 fabs. We conduct on-site observations, and interviews with manufacturing personnel at all levels from operator to general manager, to better understand reasons for the observed wide variations in performance. We have identified important factors in the areas of information systems, organizational practices, process and technology improvements, and production control that correlate strongly with high productivity. Optimum manufacturing strategy is different for commodity products, high-value proprietary products, and foundry business.

The development of a CIM (Computer Integrated manufacturing) environment requires that inspection processes be linked to databases containing the design data. Increased emphasis on flexibility must not be bought at the expense of increased human involvement in producing process directives. The RPI CIM program has developed an automated 3-D inspection system which integrates a CAD database to develop preliminary inspection directives. The design of the inspection system is characterized by real-time operation, an ability to utilize 3-D data originating from both a CAD model and from points on a test piece, the automatic generation of inspection programs based on model features, and the system's sensitivity to tolerancing issues. Inspection of manufactured parts and assemblies often requires large amounts of information in the form of test probe point locations and large amounts of time to perform the inspection. By optimally locating the probe points it is possible to maintain inspection reliability using fewer test probes in a reduced amount of time. A class of sampling schemes has been developed which use part model and manufacturing process information to generate an improved probe-point location set for routine inspection in a model-based, open-loop mode. The objective of the proposed sampling scheme is to optimize the placement of the sample points on the ideal model to minimize the chance of missing a discrepancy. The algorithm which generates the inspection program bases its test-point placement on an estimate of the likelihood of a machining discrepancy at any given point on the part surface. Implemented for evaluation in 2-D, the algorithm has been selected for its ability to be extended to 3-D. Test results show that it performs favorably on a large class of surfaces. © 1988 SPIE. In this paper, the formation of side-curl dominated chips IS first discussed, as well as the side-curl radius. The chip width and thickness in 3-D side-surl is studied for the side-curl radius prediction. The formation and and breaking of side-curled short-spiral chips in metal cutting is particularly studied. It is found that the collision of the swinging chip and the unmachined workpiece surface or tool holder flank surface plays an important role in chip breaking. Based on a force analysis, a chip breaking criterion is established and the chip length is estimated. The relationship of chip breaking length and cutting parameters is derived and verified by experiment results, which can be used in chip length prediction. © 1997 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Modular fixtures are used as flexible fixtures for holding a variety of workpieces in manufacturing processes where standard fixture elements are assembled into different configurations to adapt to different workpiece geometry. This paper presents a constraint-based modeling and automated design of modular fixture configuration design. Assembly constraints are defined in two levels so that the spatial relationships between fixture elements can be modeled and further inferred in terms of a set of constraints. The advantages of this method compared with our previous work include the associativity in fixture design. Once the constraints are specified, the assembly relationships are maintained even if other conditions may change, especially in the process of design modification. The constraint definitions and constraint satisfaction are presented The application of the method to modular fixture configuration design is introduced. © 1998 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). In order to address the computational costs of modeling and analyzing manufacturing processes, a novel approach to virtual manufacturing process engineering using generic modular operations is presented. Relying on a state based representation of operation control for a simplified virtual manufacturing workcell, the valid states for each sequence of generic modular operations are aggregated and both operation state and processing constraints applied to specify the subtasks required to complete each step in a product's process plan. By adopting this state based control approach, virtual process engineering provides a direct mechanism to map virtual process representations onto actualized processes. Using these generic modular operations and their temporal and processing dependencies, the computationally complex elements of virtual manufacturing process simulation can be directly identified and an architecture for virtual process development specified. Examples from both machining and assembly processes are provided. © 1997 by ASME.

A process specification language is being developed for virtual manufacturing that provides a structured portable definition of a given manufacturing process as well as the ability to specify the temporal relationships between individual operation steps that compose a process. Based on the concepts embodied in markup languages such as HTML, SGML and XML, a portable process definition structure is defined. This structure provides a template from which virtual process specifications can be created. Subsequently, these structures can be exchanged between development environments for virtual process engineering and the actualized manufacturing facilities where processes are implemented. In addition, dependencies in time between the operation steps of a process such as common start times and operation serialization can be represented to allow for a complete specification of temporal behavior of a given manufacturing process. By providing this explicit mechanism for representing temporal constraints, a virtual manufacturing process can be viewed and utilized both in a localized application on a single virtual factory floor as well as distributed across multiple, interlinked virtual environments. © 1998 by ASME.
