Industry Based ＂Hands-On＂ Undergraduate Vibration Course for engineering and engineering technology Students

Modem technology and manufacturing methods often require engineers who understand the fundamental principles of vibration theory and who are also skilled in vibration applications. Simply processing, remembering and applying the material learned from lectures and laboratory experiments With artificial criteria are inadequate. Hands-on teaching techniques with real-world problems are needed to complete the engineering students＇ education. This paper demonstrates how hands-on experiments performed in industry support and increase the students＇ understanding of fundamental principles and skill in their applications. Graduates with both knowledge and skill are more competitive in today＇s job market. A one-quarter industry-based vibration course was developed and taught with a hands-on segment at the manufacturing and mechanical engineering and technology （MMET） program at Oregon Institute of technology （OIT） - Portland Campus. This novel instructional approach provided students with the opportunity to immediately apply material, learned in class and laboratory, in real-world industry situations with real-world problems. This instructional approach is applicable in many engineering fields and the author found the mechanical vibrations class particularly well suited for this instructional design style. The hands-on approach, grounded in the vibration course curriculum, provided a direct link to the fundamentals of vibration in industry. Student comments are included to demonstrate the value perceived by the students. Although this curriculum experiment involved mechanical engineering technology students, it would benefit mechanical engineering students equally well. In addition, the paper provides a brief description of the industries that participated in this project. Industries were selected because they use vibration based manufacturing, perform extreme testing or design their products to avoid failure due to vibrations.

A study of helical Lamb wave propagation on two hollow cylinders with imperfect contact conditions

The effects of varying interfacial conditions between two contacting hollow cylinders on the propagation of helical Lamb waves are studied. Experiments were carried out on two aluminum hollow cylinders (114 mm in outer-diameter and 6 mm of wall thickness) axially loaded by a horizontal press to control contact interfacial stiffness. An ultrasonic measurement setup using broadband transducers, with semispherical contact probes coupled to the cylinders surface, in a pitchcatch configuration is presented. Time-frequency representation (TFR) is employed to accurately perform mode identification of ultrasonic captured signals. The effect of different interfacial contact conditions in mechanically joined cylinders into propagation parameters of helical Lamb waves is studied. Finally, a comparison of sensitivity, between Lamb waves in straight and helical propagating paths, under different interfacial conditions is presented.

We find that a conventional engineering degree approach to education is not sufficient to meet the new challenges in the ecosystem of manufacturing, design and business innovation, and product realization. Instead a new form of engineering education, the "Professional Masters" is required that takes the grounding provided by typical Bachelor of Science in engineering degree and provides condensed, formalized, experience with systems, applications, projects, and nontechnical topics to create a true professional ready to maximize their value to the company and ready to use their experience to lead. The Master of engineering in manufacturing (MEngM) at MIT was developed over a period of 10 years, and has more than 200 alumni. It is based on the notion of a need for graduate level education in the profession of engineering that is not fulfilled by the conventional researchoriented Master of Science degree. We have learned that there is a large pool of outstanding students who will seek out this degree once it is offered, and who have as alumni drawn strongly positive reviews from their employers. Students in the program, a cross-section of the best and the brightest, are drawn to the notion that manufacturing is how technological advances and innovations become rooted in a nation's economy. They want to understand the essential components and growth opportunities of the foundation - manufacturing and innovation - of an economy. There are many indicators of the decline of manufacturing in the US, most of them economic. One troubling indicator is the persistent lack of interest in careers in this field, particularly at the collegiate and post-graduate level. While there are continual calls for better labor force training and government programs to support the same, there are actually disincentives for promising young professionals to enter this field. Societal perception and industry needs seem to run counter to one another. We propose that the MEngM can serve as one exam

Fundamental study was carried out for provision for acidification of soil due to acid rain. The influence of weight of the additive slag on elution behavior of the slag into water was studied in this study. Elution experiment was carried out on a basis of JIS K 0058-1. Generally, the pH in the aqueous solution increased with an increase in weight of the additive slag. The pH converged to approximately eight. Calcium, magnesium and manganese, which were essential elements for plants, were eluted from the slag irrespective to elution condition. The eluted concentrations of Ca and Mg increased with an increase in weight of the additive slag. Silicon and zinc were also eluted depending on the conditions. Aluminum that was harmful for plants was not eluted from the used slag.

Authors have been studying the absorption of CO2 in the steelmaking slag. In this study, an application of the electric arc furnace slag after the carbonation to admixture of mortar was investigated with the JIS (A6206-1997) method for ground granulated blast-furnace slag for concrete. The percent flows for the test mortar were smaller than that for the standard mortar. The percent flow of the carbonated slag whose average particle size of more than approximately 4 μm increased with an increase in the average size of the particles. Because the compressive strengths of the test mortar cured for 91 days were almost the same as those cured 28 days, the slag after the carbonation was thought not to have self-hardening property for a medium and long term. The compressive strength for the test mortar was almost unchanged within a range of approximately 2 to 7 μm of the average particle size, and it in this range was highest. The activity indexes for the test mortar prepared with the slag after the carbonation ranged from approximately 40 to 60 %.

We successfully engineered Si nano-columns with different cross-sectional geometries by e-beam evaporation with an angle between source and substrate. The Si nano-columns were grown as pillars with square, triangle and linear cross sections in in-plane. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from the bone marrow stroma of young adult rats were cultured on these different Si nanosurfaces. We found that the behaviour of MSCs highly depended on the geometry of nano-topography so that mesenchymal stem cells were differentiated and induced CaP precipitation on square-cross-sectional Si nano-columns without growth factor in the culture medium. © 2011 IEEE.

The mechanical engineering technology program at Rochester Institute of technology (RIT) has implemented an alternative to the capstone project technique commonly used to satisfy the ABET Criterion 5 Curriculum section d. (Capstone or other integrating experiences must draw together diverse elements of the curriculum and develop student competence in focusing both technical and non-technical skills in solving problems.)1 A majority of engineering technology and engineering Science programs rely upon a capstone project for providing an integrating experience which, by their very nature, are burdensome to the program resources and invariably suffer many disadvantages in their operation. Due to the size and complexity of capstone projects, the objective in the mechanical engineering technology (MET) program at RIT has been to provide an alternative to the current capstone technique that will provide a superior integrating experience through a series of connected experiential projects integrated into the core classes. This paper will present a method, based on a scheme for experiential learning and innovation,that is a viable and robust alternative to the capstone technique which is easier to implement, will reduce the burden to the program, and provides a more complete integrating experience to the student while strengthening the MET program here at RIT. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

ULTRASONIC LAMB WAVE TOMOGRAPHY OF NON‐UNIFORM INTERFACIAL STIFFNESS BETWEEN CONTACTING SOLID BODIES

In this work, the interfacial condition between two contacting solid bodies is determined using an ultrasonic Lamb wave tomography. An ultrasonic measurement setup based on parallel projection tomography that uses broadband transducers is presented. Time‐frequency representation (TFR) is employed to improve identification of the arrival time and frequency contents of the transmitted wave modes. Experiments are carried out on an aluminum plate where the flat end of a solid aluminum bar is pressed perpendicular to the surface; then, the level and distribution of the interfacial stiffness is controlled by applied force on the bar. The tomographic reconstructions are performed during repeated loading cycles. Finally, reconstructed tomographic images of the contact area versus applied pressure are obtained. The method presented has potential applications in determining the loss of contact in mechanically joined structural components.
