Effect of microplastic binding capacity on antioxidant and immune responses of Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegeli in a co-exposure environment with microplastics and Streptococcus iniae

Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) aquaculture, which predominantly occurs in coastal regions, encounters challenges such as reduced productivity owing to microplastics and bacterial contamination. Microplastic adsorb bacteria and accumulates in fish, inducing alterations in antioxidant and immune responses. Numerous studies have examined the interaction between microplastics and external pollutants such as heavy metals and physiological changes in fish;however, studies on the effects of combined exposure to microplastics and bacteria on physiological changes in fish remain limited. Therefore, we investigated the effects of combined exposure to microbead (MB) and Streptococcus iniae (S. iniae) on the antioxidant and immune responses of Korean rockfish. Korean rockfish were exposed to single and combined environments of 0.2 μm MB at 5 and 50 beads/L and S. iniae at 1 × 105 and 1 × 107 CFU/mL for 5 days. MB accumulation in gill and intestine tissues was examined, and copy number changes of S. iniae in liver and spleen tissues were analyzed. The mRNA expression levels of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT) and immune-related genes (IL-1β, IL-6, CCL25, and TNF-α) were analyzed in the liver tissue, while changes in plasma MDA and lysozyme levels were evaluated as an additional immune-related factor. Combined exposure to high concentrations of MB and S. iniae increased the accumulation of MB and the copy number of S. iniae than that of a single exposure. This also increased the mRNA expression of antioxidant enzymes and immune response genes. These results indicate that the accumulation of MB in Korean rockfish, depending on its concentration, can bind with S. iniae, inducing changes in the copy number of S. iniae and affecting antioxidant and immune responses. This study is expected to provide fundamental academic data for understanding the physiological and immunological responses of marine organisms exposed to the combined effects of MB and S. iniae. © 2025 Elsevier Lt

Underwater acoustic wave propagates through multipath channels formed by interactions with the ocean boundaries such as the sea surface and bottom, and each element of the multipath has a different propagation angle each other. Acoustic vector sensors can receive not only acoustic pressure but also vector components (two or three components) such as acoustic acceleration or particle velocity, and each particle velocity signal has different multipath characteristics depending on directionality. In communication systems, directional diversity gain can be obtained if these particle velocity signals are used for multichannel combining. However, since the delay times of each component within the multipath of particle velocity are the same due to the point location of the single vector sensor, the gain from the directional diversity might be smaller than the gain from the spatial diversity of the hydrophone array. In this talk, a study on performance improvement of the communication system of a single vector sensor was conducted in terms of various types of diversity through the communication data obtained from KOREX-17. It is shown that the bidirectional block-based time reversal technique with channel parameter-based weighting gave the best performance.

Due to their worldwide distribution and persistence, mercury, and nano- and microplastics (NMPs) pose major threats to global ocean ecosystems. Hg and NMPs co-exist in the ocean and can interact with each other. However, information on the toxicity of this interaction to marine biota remains limited. Thus, we investigated the toxicological interaction between HgCl2 (Hg) and NMPs by studying the influence of different sizes of polystyrene beads (0.05-, 0.5-, and 6-μm) on Hg accumulation in the brackish water flea Diaphanosoma celebensis. The Hg adsorption capacity of NPs (0.05-μm) was higher than that of MPs (0.5- and 6-μm). Only the group co-exposed to both Hg and NPs showed increased Hg content in D. celebensis. Multixenobiotic resistance (MXR) activity and transcriptional modulation of transporter genes (ABCBs and ABCCs) were decreased by NMP exposure, particularly by NPs, suggesting MXR disruption by NPs. However, the activity of multidrug resistance-associated proteins (MRPs;ABCCs) was increased by Hg exposure alone and decreased upon NP co-exposure. Furthermore, in vivo toxicity tests showed a synergistic toxic interaction between Hg and NPs on the reproduction of D. celebensis. Our findings suggest that NPs have the potential to enhance the toxicity of Hg, increasing Hg accumulation not only by serving Hg as a carrier but also by disrupting MXR. © 2024, The Authors. Slope stability analysis has been performed through various analysis methods ranging from general limit equilibrium methods, such as those proposed by Janbu, Bishop, and Fellenius, to finite element methods. Using these methods, analyzing the slope stability considering the change in soil stiffness due to the freezing or thawing conditions resulting from temperature changes is infeasible. Therefore, considering this shortcoming, a thermal-hydro-mechanical slope stability analysis model (THM-SSA model) is proposed for slope stability analysis. The slope of the critical state line according to the load angle was the main feature considered in the THM-SSA model. Additionally, this model could calculate the local factor of safety (LFS) for the slope considering the isotropic tensile strength of the unfrozen soil and the changes in it after being subjected to repeated freeze–thaw cycles. To verify the proposed THM-SSA model, the stress–strain results were compared with those of the experimental triaxial shear tests that were conducted under different temperatures of the frozen soil with a corresponding number of freeze–thaw cycles. Based on this, an example simulation of slope stability analysis was performed, and using the verified THM-SSA model, the LFS was calculated according to the freeze–thaw cycles of the slope. © 2023, The Authors. Although titanium-based artificial bioimplants are considered viable, they are not effective in combating bacterial-associated infections. In this perspective, the near-infrared (NIR) photothermal treatment (PTT) approach is suitable for eradicating bacteria due to its distinct characteristics. The present work aims to fabricate the NIR-II (1064 nm) laser-active CuS nanoparticles (NPs) incorporated within a polyetherimide (PEI) matrix as a hybrid coating on the nanoporous structured Ti surface (CuS-PEI/OH-Ti) to enhance the antibacterial efficacy. The formation of the CuS NPs, the alkali treatment of the Ti sample to create a nanoporous structure, and the subsequent coating of the hybrid CuS-PEI layer on OH-Ti were carried out by solvothermal and casting methods, respectively. The CuS NPs formed, nanoporous Ti surface, and the CuS-PEI hybrid coating on the OH-Ti surface with better adhesion were confirmed by comprehensive surface characterization studies. The antibacterial efficacy of CuS NPs (at 100 μg mL−1) and their CuS-PEI coated OH-Ti was enhanced against S. aureus and E. coli under NIR-II laser irradiation, reaching over 88 % and 83 %, respectively through the cell membrane damage mechanism. Minimal cytotoxicity was observed in the presence of the L929 and MC3T3-E1 cell lines. Furthermore, the electrochemical results in a simulated body fluid revealed that the coated Ti is compatible with the in-vivo electrochemical potential range. The antibacterial efficacy (>97 % against S. aureus) of the CuS-PEI/OH-Ti implant, as well as its biocompatibility and stability, were confirmed using an in vivo subcutaneous mouse model. The results indicate that the application of a photoactive hybrid CuS-PEI layer on the nanoporous Ti improves the antibacterial properties without compromising the biocompatibility. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

We investigate the application of ByteTrack in the realm of multiple object tracking. ByteTrack, a simple tracking algorithm, enables the simultaneous tracking of multiple objects by strategically incorporating detections with a low confidence threshold. Conventionally, objects are initially associated with high confidence threshold detections. When the association between objects and detections becomes ambiguous, ByteTrack extends the association to lower confidence threshold detections. One notable drawback of the existing ByteTrack approach is its reliance on a fixed threshold to differentiate between high and low-confidence detections. In response to this limitation, we introduce a novel and adaptive approach. Our proposed method entails a dynamic adjustment of the confidence threshold, leveraging insights derived from overall detections. Through experimentation, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our adaptive confidence threshold technique while maintaining running time compared to ByteTrack. © 2023, CC BY.

Recently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) has been reported over 19% due to the development of novel electron donor polymers and acceptor molecules such as PM6:Y6. In addition, cathode interlayers (CILs) based on non-fullerene structure (e.g., PNDIT-F3NBr and PDINN) have been employed in conventional OSCs to facilitate charge transfer from active layer to electrode. Meanwhile, metal electrodes for cathode contact have received relatively little attention and the role of CIL/metal interface has been barely investigated in OSCs. While conventional OSCs generally adopt a cathode electrode with a low work function (e.g., silver and aluminum) for an ideal energy positioning near the lowest occupied molecular orbital level of the active material, in this study, gold (Au) with a high work function is utilized as the top electrode for the first time, resulting in a high open circuit voltage of 0.853 V and PCE of 14% based on a device structure with ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PM6:Y6/PNDIF-F3N-Br/Au. A significant upward shift of the work function of Au is monitored adjacent to CIL by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, leading to a suitable energy level alignment for charge extraction and efficient device operation. On the other hand, the diffused Au into active blend (PM6:Y6) results in poor long-term stability of OSCs, which was investigated by the aid of grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering, impedance spectroscopy. © 2024, The Authors. Individuals who are unable to walk independently spend most of the day in a *** population is at high risk for developing pressure injuries caused by ***,early diagnosis and prevention of these injuries still remain ***,we introduce battery-free,wireless,multimodal sensors and a movable system for continuous measurement of pressure,temperature,and hydration at skin *** device design includes a crack-activated pressure sensor with nanoscale encapsulations for enhanced sensitivity,a temperature sensor for measuring skin temperature,and a galvanic skin response sensor for measuring skin hydration *** movable system enables power harvesting,and data communication to multiple wireless devices mounted at skin-cushion interfaces of wheelchair users over full body *** evaluations and numerical simulations of the devices,together with clinical trials for wheelchair patients,demonstrate the feasibility and stability of the sensor system for preventing pressure injuries caused by sitting.

Thyroid and neurobehavioral effects of DiNP on GH3 cells and larval zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Diisononyl phthalate (DiNP) has been used to replace bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and is frequently found in the environment and humans. DiNP is reported for its anti-androgenic activity;however, little is known about its effects on thyroid function and neurodevelopment. In the present study, the thyroid disruption and neurobehavioral alteration potential of DiNP and its major metabolites were assessed in a rat pituitary carcinoma cell line (GH3) and embryo-larval zebrafish (Danio rerio). In GH3 cells, exposure to DiNP and its metabolites not only increased proliferation but also induced transcriptional changes in several target genes, which were different from those observed with DEHP exposure. In larval fish, a 5-day exposure to DiNP caused significant increases in thyroid hormone levels, following a similar pattern to that reported for DEHP exposure. Following exposure to DiNP, the activity of the larval fish decreased, and neurodevelopment-related genes, such as c-fos, elavl3, and mbp, were down-regulated. These changes are generally similar to those observed for DEHP. Up-regulation of gap43 and down-regulation of elavl3 gene, which are important for both thyroid hormone production and neurodevelopment, respectively, support the potential for both thyroid and behavioral disruption of DiNP. Overall, these results emphasize the need to consider the adverse thyroid and neurodevelopmental effects in developing regulations for DEHP-replacing phthalates. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd
