The reliance on fish meal (FM) as the primary protein source in aquafeeds is becoming increasingly unsustainable due to overfishing and limited resources. Therefore, finding an alternative protein source for FM is a crucial issue in the research of aquafeed nutrition. Corn gluten meal (CGM) is a plant protein source commonly used in aquafeeds that has been considered a practical substitute for FM. This study is designed to evaluate the impacts of substituting FM with CGM in the feed of red sea bream (Pagrus major) on growth, feed utilization, and biochemical composition. Total of 600 juvenile (8.60 ± 0.011 g;initial mean body weight ± SE) fish were assigned to twelve 300 L flow-through tanks. The control (Con) diet included 55% FM. In the Con diet, 20%, 40%, and 60% of FM were replaced with CGM, identified as the CG20, CG40, and CG60 diets, respectively. Four isoproteic (51.5%) and isolipidic (14.5%) diets were prepared. All diets were supplied to triplicate groups of fish. Fish were hand-fed to satiation level twice daily for 56 days. At the completion of the 56-day feeding trial, the weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) of red sea bream fed the Con and CG20 diets were superior (p < 0.0001 for both) to fish fed the CG40 and CG60 diets. WG and SGR of red sea bream linearly decreased with elevated dietary FM replacement levels (Y = −5.003333X + 38.9667, R² = 0.9004, p < 0.0001 and Y = −0.002607X + 0.0314, R² = 0.9083, p < 0.0001, respectively). Feed consumption (FC), protein efficiency ratio (PER), and protein retention (PR) of red sea bream fed the Con and CG20 diets were statistically (p < 0.006, p < 0.003, and p < 0.004, respectively) higher than those of fish fed the CG40 and CG60 diets. As one of efforts to conserve a genetic resource of the endemic cobitid species in the Korean peninsula, the complete mitogenome ofCobitis hankugensis(Kim, Park, Son & Nalbant, 2003) was determined using Illumina MiSeq system. The circular mitogenome was 16,557 bp length and encoded 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, and a control region. Only the COX1 gene was identified with an aberrant initiation codon GTG, and an incomplete termination codon (T—/TA–) was identified in six PCGs including COX2, COX3, ND2, ND3, ND4, and Cytb genes. Phylogenetic analysis using 30 mitochondrial genomes belonging to Cobitidae, Botiidae, and Gyrinocheilidae showed that the highest identity (92.38%) withKichulchoia brevifasciata(NC_027166). The complete mitogenome ofC. hankugensis, an endemic species in Korea, will provide fundamental data on the evolutionary relationship of Cobitidae species.

Federated learning (FL) has found many successes in wireless communications;however, the implementation of FL has been hindered by the energy limitation of mobile devices (MDs) and the availability of training data at MDs. Wireless power transfer (WPT) and mobile crowdsensing (MCS) are promising technologies that can be leveraged to power energy-limited MDs and acquire data for learning tasks. However, how to integrate WPT and MCS towards sustainable FL solutions is a research topic entirely missing from the open literature. This work for the first time investigates a resource allocation problem in collaborative sensing-assisted sustainable FL (S2FL) networks with the goal of minimizing the total completion time. In particular, we investigate a practical harvesting-sensing-training-transmitting protocol in which energy-limited mobile devices first harvest energy from RF signals, use it to gain a reward for user participation, sense the training data from the environment, train the local models at mobile devices, and transmit the model updates to the edge server. The total completion time minimization problem of jointly optimizing power transfer, transmit power allocation, data sensing, bandwidth allocation, local model training, and data transmission is complicated due to the non-convex objective function, highly non-convex constraints, and strongly coupled variables. We propose a computationally-efficient path-following algorithm to obtain the optimal solution via the decomposition technique. In particular, inner convex approximations are developed for the resource allocation sub-problem, and the subproblems are performed alternatively in an iterative fashion. Simulation results are provided to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed S2FL algorithm in reducing the completion time up to 21.45% in comparison with other benchmark schemes. Recently identified Korean seahorse, Hippocampus haema, represents a novel species, yet studies on its ecology remain insufficient. This research aimed to enhance our understanding of H. haema’s ecology through a morphological analysis. A total of 913 seahorses were collected from Geoje-Hansan Bay, Republic of Korea, and characterized by snout length (SnL), head length (HL), coronet height (CH), trunk length (TrL), tail length (TaL), height (Ht), and standard length (SL). The aim and scope of the paper is to simulate the signal propagation parameters estimation through designed multi-layer fibre with higher dominant modes by using OptiFibre simulation software. The multi-layer fibre profile has a length of 1000 m is designed and clarified with six layers. RI difference profile variations are clarified with radial distance variations. Modal/group index, group delay, dispersion, mode field diameter and total fibre losses are demonstrated with the fibre wavelength variations. All the dominant mode field distribution for multi-layer fibre are simulated and demonstrated. The other modes for designed multi-layer fibre with the theoretical fibre cutoff values for the different modes based the designed multi-layer fibre are analyzed and clarified clearly in details. © 2022 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.

In the domain of Federated Learning (FL) systems, recent cutting-edge methods heavily rely on ideal conditions convergence analysis. Specifically, these approaches assume that the training datasets on IoT devices possess similar attributes to the global data distribution. However, this approach fails to capture the full spectrum of data characteristics in real-time sensing FL systems. In order to overcome this limitation, we suggest a new approach system specifically designed for IoT networks with real-time sensing capabilities. Our approach takes into account the generalization gap due to the user’s data sampling process. By effectively controlling this sampling process, we can mitigate the overfitting issue and improve overall accuracy. In particular, We first formulate an optimization problem that harnesses the sampling process to concurrently reduce overfitting while maximizing accuracy. In pursuit of this objective, our surrogate optimization problem is adept at handling energy efficiency while optimizing the accuracy with high generalization. To solve the optimization problem with high complexity, we introduce an online reinforcement learning algorithm, named Sample-driven Control for Federated Learning (SCFL) built on the Soft Actor-Critic (A2C) framework. This enables the agent to dynamically adapt and find the global optima even in changing environments. Skin-attachable conductive materials have attracted significant attention for use in wearable devices and physiological monitoring applications. Soft, skin-like conductive films must have excellent mechanical and electrical characteristics with on-skin conformability, stretchability, and robustness to detect body motion and biological signals. In this study, a conductive, stretchable, hydro-biodegradable, and highly robust cellulose/poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hybrid film is fabricated. Through the synergetic interplay of a conductivity enhancer, non-ionic fluorosurfactant, and surface modifier, the mechanical and electrical properties of the stretchable hybrid film are greatly improved. The stretchable cellulose/PEDOT:PSS hybrid film achieves a limited resistance change of only 1.21-fold after 100 stretch–release cycles (30% strain) with little hysteresis, demonstrating its great potential as a stretchable electrode for stretchable electronics. In addition, the film shows excellent biodegradability, promising environmental friendliness, and safety benefits. High-performance stretchable cellulose/PEDOT:PSS hybrid films, which have high biocompatibility and sensitivity, are applied to human skin to serve as on-skin multifunctional sensors. The conformally mounted on-skin sensors are capable of continuously monitoring human physiological signals, such as body motions, drinking, respiration rates, vocalization, humidity, and temperature, with high sensitivity, fast responses, and very low power consumption (21 μW). The highly conductive hybrid films developed in this study can be integrated as both stretchable electrodes and multifunctional healthcare monitoring sensors. We believe that the highly robust stretchable, conductive, biodegradable, skin-attachable cellulose/PEDOT:PSS hybrid films are worthy candidates as promising soft conductive materials for stretchable electronics. © 2022, The Authors. Ishophloroglucin A (IPA) is one of the most abundant and active compounds in Ishige okamurae and is known to be a potential therapeutic candidate for the improvement of metabolic diseases. However, IPA on the inhibitory effects of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) and adipogenesis have not been determined. In this study, we investigated the effects of IPA on the inhibition of PTP1B, the effects on adipogenesis, and its mechanisms of action in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The IC50 value of IPA against PTP1B was 1.05 μM, which evidenced the higher inhibition activity than that of ursolic acid, a known PTP1B inhibitor. For further insight, we predicted the 3D structure of PTP1B and used a docking algorithm to simulate the binding between PTP1B and IPA. Molecular docking studies revealed a high and stable binding affinity between IPA and PTP1B and indicated that the IPA could interacts with the amino acid residues located in a region to the active site of PTP1B. Further studies showed that IPA concentrations between 6.25 μM and 25 μM dose-dependently attenuated adipogenesis, which was accompanied by a reduction in adipogenesis-related factors, including PPARγ, C/EBPα, SREBP-1, and FABP4. Our findings suggested that IPA may be a promising natural compound for the treatment of obesity and related diseases. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Pulsed flows from tributaries following monsoon rains alter riverine food web structures. However, understanding of how food web processes within tributaries respond to these pulses remains limited. We analyzed C and N stable isotopes of macroinvertebrates and fish in two tributaries of the Suyeung River, South Korea, before and after the monsoon to quantify changes in the trophic base and diversity, food chain length, and food web trophic niches. We hypothesized that monsoon rains, which increase hydrological connectivity, would shift consumer isotope signatures differently in forest streams and agricultural land channels, thus modifying trophic niches. The δ13C and δ15N values of primary basal resources, leaf litter and biofilms, were consistent before and after the monsoon, with biofilms having higher δ13C values than leaf litter in upper tributaries. However, these resources showed a marked increase in δ15N values from forest streams to agricultural land channels. Consumer δ13C and δ15N values were constant with time but increased longitudinally due to greater nutritional contributions from local resources. Community isotopic niche metrics (breadth, height, area) were consistent across locations and seasons, but trophic niches were separated between watershed locations and were closely overlapped between seasons in isotopic niche space. These results suggest that short-term monsoonal rains do not alter the longitudinal trend of a trophic niche across tributaries, thus disproving our hypothesis. The patterns identified offer insights into food web responses to monsoon rains in temperate tributaries: 1) stream food webs at different watershed locations rely on local resources pre- and post-monsoon;2) downstream food webs rely on nitrogen inputs from agricultural watersheds;and 3) trophic niche expansion in agricultural land channel food webs after monsoon rain is insignificant.
