Assessing the effects of silicate addition on phytoplankton composition and copepod production in an inorganic fertilization system

In the past, diatoms were considered the primary food source for copepods in both wild and aquaculture settings. However, recent studies have found that diatoms have defense mechanisms against predators, making them unsuitable as copepod feed. This study assessed the impact of addition of 100 μg L⁻¹ of silicate to an inorganic nutrition formula containing 700 μg L⁻¹ nitrogen, 100 μg L⁻¹ phosphorus, and 100 μg L⁻¹ iron. Our objective was to assess the impact of increased diatom abundance on copepod production. The experiment was carried out in 1000 L outdoor tanks over a period of 20 days, with adult Pseudodiaptomus annandalei copepods, introduced into each tank on the second day at an initial density of 10 ind. L⁻¹. The results indicated that adding silicate reduced the prevalence of Chlorophyta, replaced by a higher proportion of Dinophyta, and eventually dominated by diatoms. While silicate had a positive effect on diatom culture, it had a negative effect on copepod production. Adding silicate to the inorganic fertilization method resulted in increased costs, leading to a significant increase in the unit production cost of copepods. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This study aims to develop an edible coating based on virgin coconut oil (VCO) nanoemulsion, iota-carrageenan and alginate to prolong the shelf life of pindang (mildly salted cooked) fish products. The research involved three stages: material preparation, characterization and determination of factors and responses for experimental design;parameter optimization to achieve optimal conditions;and application and analysis of pre- and post-coating characteristics of pindang fish. The parameter ranges were 0.5–1.5% for alginate concentration, 0.5–1.5% for iota-carrageenan concentration and 0.5–1.0% for VCO nanoemulsion concentration. The result of this study was an optimized food coating solution that was clear and bright white in color. Pindang fish coated with this layer showed improved quality in terms of water content (48.46%), weight loss (0.39%), pH (5.84), total volatile base (47.01%), salt content (2.9%), appearance (7), texture (7) and slime (7). At the same time, the total bacterial count remained unchanged (8 log colony-forming units (CFU)/g), the mold count remained unchanged (5 log CFU/g) and the aroma and taste received a score of 6. Thus, this study successfully produced an optimized edible coating that can enhance the quality and extend the shelf life of pindang fish, making it suitable for broader market distribution. © 2023 ICE Publishing. Two species of cusk eels, Neobythites australiensis Nielsen, 2002 and Neobythites japonicus Uiblein et Nielsen, 2023 were collected from southwestern and northeastern Taiwan, respectively. They represent the first record of both species from Taiwan. The former specimen represents the first record from the Northern Hemisphere, and the latter specimen represents the second record of N. japonicus. As a result, eight species of Neobythites are recognized in Taiwan. We provide a detailed description of the two specimens, comparison with other available specimens, discussion of intraspecific variations, and a dichotomous key to species of Neobythites in Taiwan. © 2023, Pensoft Publishers. Purpose: A promising feature of marine sponges is the potential anticancer efficacy of their secondary metabolites. The objective of this study was to explore the anticancer activities of compounds from the fungal symbiont of Aaptos suberitoides on breast cancer cells. Methods: In the present research, Aspergillus unguis, an endophytic fungal strain derived from the marine sponge A. suberitoides was successfully isolated and characterized. Subsequently, ethyl acetate extraction and isolation of chemical constituents produced was performed. The structures of the isolated compounds were identified using several spectroscopic methods, ie, UV, NMR, and mass spectrometry. Thereafter, MDA-MB-231, MCF-7 breast cancer cells and HaCat cells were treated with the isolated compounds. Not only viability, apoptosis, and cell cycle analyses were conducted, but also the mRNA expression of MCL1, BCL2L1, AKT1 and CDK2 were evaluated. Results: The extract showed cytotoxic activity in breast cancer cells. Two novel compounds were successfully isolated and identified, ie, Unguisol A (15.1 mg) and Unguisol B (97.9 mg). Both compounds share the same basic skeleton and comprise an aromatic ring which is attached to a sulphur-containing, seven-membered ring via an oxygen atom. This marked the first-time isolation of Unguisol A and Unguisol B from A. unguis, highlighting their novelty. Both compounds induced early apoptosis (p < 0.01) and cell cycle arrest at the S phase (p < 0.05) in MDA-MB-231 cells, but not in HaCat cells. Both compounds suppressed BCL2L1 and AKT1 mRNA expression (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Two novel compounds were isolated from A. unguis. Unguisol A and Unguisol B induced apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells via BCL2L1 mRNA downregulation, while both compounds induced cell cycle arrest at the S phase through AKT1 mRNA downregulation. © 2025 Bashari et al.

13-Acetoxysarcocrassolide (13-AC) is a marine cembranoid derived from the aquaculture soft coral of Lobophytum crassum. The cytotoxic effect of 13-AC against leukemia cells was previously reported but its mechanism of action is still unexplored. In the current study, we showed that 13-AC induced apoptosis of human acute lymphoblastic leukemia Molt4 cells, as evidenced by the cleavage of PARP and caspases, phosphatidylserine externalization, as well as the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential. The use of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger, attenuated the cytotoxic effect induced by 13-AC. Molecular docking and thermal shift assay indicated that the cytotoxic mechanism of action of 13-AC involved the inhibition of heat shock protein 90 (Hsp 90) activity by eliciting the level of Hsp 70 and topoisomerase IIα in Molt4 cells. 13-AC also exhibited potent antitumor activity by reducing the tumor volume (48.3%) and weight (72.5%) in the in vivo Molt4 xenograft mice model. Our findings suggested that the marine cembranoid, 13-AC, acted as a dual inhibitor of Hsp 90 and topoisomerase IIα, exerting more potent apoptotic activity via the enhancement of ROS generation. © 2023 The Authors. Biofilm formation by a single and multiple microbial species poses a significant challenge to healthcare due to biofilm-related antibiotic resistance. This study aimed to develop a nanoformulation (Mal-AuNP-Gel) by synthesizing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with maltol (Mal), and coating them with fish gelatin (Gel) to reduce biofilm formation and virulence characteristics of microbial pathogens. Mal-AuNP-Gel showed increased antibacterial activity against all pathogens studied, including bacterial (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and methicillin-resistant S. aureus) and fungal pathogens (e.g., Candida albicans), with MICs up to 2-fold lower than those of Mal-AuNPs. At the sub-MIC level, Mal-AuNPs-Gel, compared to Mal-AuNPs, improved the inhibition of initial-stage biofilm development by a single species of P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and C. albicans as well as the mixed-species biofilm of S. aureus and C. albicans. Additionally, these nanoparticles significantly inhibited several virulence characteristics such as hemolysis, pyoverdine and pyocyanin production, protease activity, and motility of P. aeruginosa. Furthermore, the expression of genes associated with biofilm formation, quorum sensing, motility, and virulence factors in P. aeruginosa was found to be suppressed by Mal-AuNPs-Gel at a higher level than that of Mal-AuNPs, corroborating the phenotypic effects. The non-cytotoxic effects of Mal-AuNPs and Mal-AuNPs-Gel at sub-MIC levels, as evidenced by results of in vitro cell cytotoxicity and in vivo phytotoxicity tests, further indicated biocompatibility of the synthesized nanoparticles. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Spatiooral analysis of yellow fin tuna fishing activity could give us new perception and perspective on studying this fisheries resource exploration. This study was carried out in Eastern Indian Ocean off Sumatera. Fishing data were collected between 2014 until 2018 from the hand line fishermen's daily logbooks accessed from Bungus fishing port. Data were organized into a database and structured on a geographical reference to allow GIS-Based analysis. We performed raster calculator analysis and spatial statistical analysis to understand spatiotemporal distribution behaviour and fishing activity also employed the generalized additive model to understand the habitat preferences. The result of GIS-based analysis shows the dynamics of catch, effort and catch per unit effort distribution patterns, underlining the annual differences of geographical distribution and fishing pattern. The most concentrated fishing activity monitored in 2014 while the more dispersed fishing activity monitored in 2017. The geographic orientation of spatial distribution monitored at range between 72.90 degrees until 176.15 degrees. GIS provide an important and powerful tool to analyse fishing information to help decision makers in the EIO off Sumatera on Tuna management. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Two new non-withanolidal steroids with a cross-conjugated dienone structural unit in ring A, capnesterones A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the soft coral Capnella imbricata in the southeast waters of Taiwan. The compounds' structures were elucidated through a comprehensive analysis of spectroscopic data, including IR, ESIMS, ¹H NMR, and ¹³C NMR, and through comparison with previous literature. At a concentration of 10 μM, steroids 1 and 2 exhibited reductions in iNOS levels (60 % and 82 %) compared to LPS-stimulated control cells, along with increased release (134 % and 110 %) against COX-2 protein expressions. © 2024 Phytochemical Society of Europe

Quantification of Litter in Cities Using a Smartphone Application and Citizen Science in Conjunction with Deep Learning-Based Image Processing

We aimed to classify and quantify the abundance of litter in cities, which is a major source of marine plastic pollution, using citizen science combined with deep learning-based image processing. The project to collect image data including street litter through the smartphone application Pirika was launched in May 2018 and is ongoing and the total number of submitted images has reached one million. Of these, it was visually confirmed that images with clearly distinguished street litter accounted for approximately 30% of all images. Visual classification revealed that the most common types of litter were cans, followed by plastic bags, plastic bottles, cigarette butts, cigarette boxes, and masks. The top six categories account for approximately 80% of the total and the top three categories account for more than 60% of the total imaged litter. Based on these results, a classifier capable of classifying and quantifying these six litter types was constructed using image processing based on deep learning trained using the submitted images. This model was validated using images unused for training. The results revealed that both precision and recall derived from our model were higher than 75%. The quantity of litter derived from automated image processing was also plotted on a map using location data acquired concurrently with the images by the smartphone application. Therefore, we demonstrated that citizen science supported by smartphone applications and deep learning-based image processing is capable of visualizing/quantifying street litter in cities. © 2023, The Authors. Charlotte (North Carolina), ISSN *** marine sediments are biogeochemically active and may contribute dissolved nutrients to support primary production in coastal regions. This study examined the potential of permeable marine sediments near giant kelp forests in the Santa Barbara Channel, California as a source of ammonium (NH4+) to the overlying water column to support the observed growth of kelp during summer months when nitrate availability is low. Several nearshore sites located in coastal California in <20 m water depth were sampled for porewater nutrient concentrations, flushing rates, and nutrient fluxes in addition to diel fluctuations in nutrient concentrations of the overlying water column. Time-series analyses of porewater temperatures indicate that porewater flushed to a depth of 15 cm approximately every two hours, and mean NH4+ concentrations of porewater at these depths was 40 µM. The results of flow-through bioreactor incubations indicate that the top 2 cm of sediment are a net source of dissolved nitrogen to the overlying water column and are capable of supplying from 0.05 to 0.90 mmol NH4+ m–2 day–1. Diel water sampling demonstrates that kelp forests may be exposed to NH4+ concentrations greater than 1 µM for multiple hours (four–eight) over a day. These measured reservoirs and exchange rates of NH4+ suggest sandy marine sediments provide a significant source of nitrogen to the water column and may help meet the nitrogen demand by giant kelp during summer in the Santa Barbara Channel.
