Digital games applied in education collaborate with the transmission and assimilation of knowledge, as they are motivating and attractive tools for students. This type of games causes a feeling of immersion in the player and provides the applicability of previously acquired concepts, that makes the learning process less complicated and more enjoyable. studies indicate that educational digital games facilitate the absorption of more abstract science content, such as mathematics that is considered one of the most complex in elementary school. This article presents the Mighty Math Knight game, developed with the goal of helping learning the four mathematical operations to elementary school students.

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a well-known active learning approach, and it is becoming increasingly popular in computing. The computer Engineering undergraduate program at UEFs adopts PBL since 2003. Previous studies thoroughly describe PBL course design and practices, but there is a lack of reports about the teaching experience, i.e., how faculty live the process of teaching PBL courses. Thus, we took advantage of this PBL experience to uncover such issues. We developed an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to learn the essences of being a PBL teacher, using a qualitative research methodology. Data collection and analysis entailed semi-structured interviews with five UEFs computer engineering professors, interview transcription and memo writing, open coding, code memo writing, code grouping and abstraction, and description of essences. Results led to the following essences: 1) feedback is essential for student success; 2) PBL develops better students and professionals; 3) assessment is complex and multifaceted; 4) developing good problems is a difficult skill; 5) PBL requires strong teacher engagement and background; 6) it is essential to keep a motivating scenario; and 7) good coordination and group dynamics is required. In this paper, we describe the four first essences in detail.

Engineering off-the-shelf solutions: A life cycle view

作者： Belair, D Eagan, M [?]Doug Belair is the program manager for Advanced Programs in the Fleet Ballistic Missile/Shipboard business area at Lockheed Martin Defense Systems. He joined Defense Systems in 1979 with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and held a variety of positions in software and systems engineering throughout his early career. In 1985 Doug received a Master's degree in Industrial Management from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University as part of a GE executive training program and has subsequently held increasingly complex and responsible engineering and program management positions associated with Fire Control System advanced development. Doug is currently responsible for new business opportunities and has received a number of awards including the inaugural Lockheed Martin NOVA award for technical excellence. He has been associated with the application of Off-the-Shelf products for mission critical applications since 1989 and has presented the subject often to both government and industry.

This paper describes a market driven life cycle methodology for application of off-the-shelf products and provides anecdotal lessons for each of the life cycle phases. In order to form a framework for further discussion, a model of the off-the-shelf marketplace is introduced to define a range of products from low cost commodities to high-end niche or specialty items. Within this framework, strategies are recommended for defining product requirements both technical and programmatic, surveying the market to find products that meet those requirements and then acceptance testing those products to ensure they do in fact perform as advertised. Recommendations are provided in the area of product tailoring, if tailoring is deemed a cost effective alternative to unique design. The pitfalls of managing ''off-the-shelf'' vendors as subcontractors during the tailoring phase is also described. Product procurement is defined to include not only those steps required to procure product quantities for deploy ment but also steps to ensure that those products meet the same requirements as those accepted during the selection phase. Three product support strategies are next described. The strategies range from a traditional ''commercial'' approach with support provided within the vendor's infrastructure to a more traditional ''military'' approach in which vendors are subcontracted to provide longer term support. selection of the appropriate strategy is based on a balance of cost, desired product life and desired level of stability within the system configuration.

Interactive Learning objects (ILO) are explored in this paper in order to provide an improvement in teaching learning process, ensuring the monitoring of students by professor through the interaction provided by ILO. The article describes an ontology that defines and structure the classes of the elements of the ILO's metadata standard. This ontology is used as the basis for the development of a Virtual learning environment capable of running these objects and at the same time offer a system of tracking and monitoring the development of the student during the entire process. The ontology is validated through the results of the use of the ILO in the environment with a class of 20 students of the course of computer science.

Acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) entity accounts for 10 to 15% of all strokes and is associated with a higher mortality rate ischemic stroke or subarachnoid hemorrhage. Causes of ICH are divided into primary, and secondary, including vascular malformation and tumorous. Primary ICH accounts for approximately 80% of all ICH cases. Vascular anomalies rank as the second most common cause of spontaneous ICH overall. Furthermore, hemorrhage resulting from brain tumors can occur in up to 10% of all primary or metastatic tumors. Early recognizing of these three causes of bleeding is critical for clinicians in precise diagnosis, effective treatment management, and helps avoid delayed diagnosis. We proposed a radiomics approach for classifying multiple causes of acute ICH as vascular malformation, tumorous, and primary-related hematoma. Non-contrast brain computed tomography with clinical features was used as input. The regions of both hematoma and perihematomal edema were delineated by using manual segmentation approach. Four feature selection methods were adopted. Also, three classification models were investigated in this study. The results showed that using the features selected by F-value applied with sVM classifier outperformed the other models, achieving weighted average accuracy (± sD) of 0.84 (± 0.07). Additionally, the model demonstrated average sensitivity and positive predictive value of 0.84 (± 0.06) and 0.86 (± 0.05), respectively. We also evaluate the overall performance of discriminating each class from the rest using AUC. The result suggested that our proposed model achieved the weighted average AUC of 0.90. Our proposed method highlights the potential in identifying multiple causes of acute and nontraumatic ICH, which has not been previously explored.

Matrix factorization (MF) technique has been widely utilized in recommendation systems due to the precise prediction of users' interests. Prior MF-based methods adapt the overall rating to make the recommendation by extracting latent factors from users and items. However, in real applications, people's preferences usually vary with time; the traditional MF-based methods could not properly capture the change of users' interests. In this paper, by incorporating the recurrent neural network (RNN) into MF, we develop a novel recommendation system, M-RNN-F, to effectively describe the preference evolution of users over time. A learning model is proposed to capture the evolution pattern and predict the user preference in the future. The experimental results show that M-RNN-F performs better than other state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms. In addition, we conduct the experiments on real world dataset to demonstrate the practicability.

It is the key successful factors for the manufacture industry that create and select the key parameters in product design to match customer requirements in multimedia. Previous literature studies are focused on the development of customer requirements or parameter selection in product design but not the development of customer demand modelling and product parameter selections in multimedia. In this way we can achieve the purpose of meeting customer demand for product design in multimedia. Kano is a successful method to solve the customer requirements selections issues. And, the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ) method is a method to solve the contradiction of product design. Therefore;the integration of the Kano and theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ) methods is proposed to solve the cable product design in multimedia. This algorithm is also verified in an electronic manufacture. In summary, the proposed algorithm can be helpful by creating a product system in multimedia in this study. Nowadays, schools are trying to insert knowledge and learning about sustainability issues and environmental conservation in the academic context from an early age. It is also observed the use of information technology with new didactic and ludic resources that can encourage elementary and high school students to obtain knowledge about sustainability. To this end, this research presents some results using Educational Robotics, Gestalt, and information technology, which students received from a Brazilian public elementary school. In this study, after attending workshops on sustainability, the students developed robotic resources to help them with sustainability-related knowledge. The resources were tested according to their objectives: a mobile robot that recognizes the food and shows its footprint and a box with gas sensors to identify if food is in consumable condition or should be recycled. The experiment was very successful and is in a continuous application phase.

Due to the variety of household electric devices and different power consumption habits of consumers at present, it is a challenge to identify various electric appliances without any presetting. This paper proposed the smart appliance management system for recognizing of electric appliances in home network, which can measure the power consumption of household appliances through a current sensing device. The characteristics and categories of related electric appliances are established, and this system could search the corresponding cluster data and eliminates noise for recognition functionality and error detection mechanism of electric appliances by applying the current clustering algorithm. At the same time, this system integrates household appliance control network services to control them based on users' power consumption plans, thus realizing a bidirectional monitoring service. In practical tests, the system reached a recognition rate of 95%, and could successfully control general household appliances in home network. © 2012 springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
