Onset detection is a fundamental task in music information retrieval (MIR). Classical approaches using onset detection functions (ODFs) and hand-crafted peak-picking methods are outperformed by those utilizing neural networks, which are considered state-of-the-art. However, these methods bring much more computational costs and thus can be unfavored when implementing onset detections on low-performance devices. Previous work utilizing both an ODF and a recurrent neural network (RNN) provides another option as a trade-off between accuracy and processing speed. However, it only used one single ODF for the input of the network. In the present study, we propose a novel method utilizing multiple ODFs and an RNN fusing these ODFs, together with several techniques in training the network and peak-picking. Our proposed method outperformed previous work by approximately 1% at the cost of a halved processing speed, serving as another option for trading-off between accuracy and speed. One of our future works is looking for other ODFs that can be both fast-calculating and beneficial to accuracy. © 2022 ACM.

For zero carbon emission, the industry has the pressure of carbon emission reduction. The service industry must also correspond to carbon emission policies. Hence, operators of convenience stores must prioritize the effective reduction of carbon emissions. There are two ways for them to reduce carbon emissions: energy conservation and renewable energy microgrids. Using HomerPro, we simulated the application of a renewable energy microgrid in convenience stores. Then microgrid system combinations were composed of the power grid, wind power, solar photovoltaics, lithium, and flow batteries. We used the 2030 carbon fee set in the Ministry of Environment report as the benchmark for techno-economic assessment to explore the carbon reduction benefits and cost assessments brought by the microgrid system. © 2024 IEEE.

In response to the growing global and local demand for net-zero carbon emissions, this study thoroughly explores the feasibility of implementing microgrid technology in convenience stores across Taiwan to reduce carbon emissions and enhance overall energy sustainability significantly. The research emphasizes the integration of renewable energy sources, specifically solar and wind power, aligning with Taiwan's strategic initiatives in promoting renewable energy development. Utilizing the HomerPro simulation tool, the study conducts an in-depth assessment of various energy combinations, evaluating their performance under various conditions, including different carbon pricing scenarios, grid reliability factors, and essential financial variables such as discount rates and inflation. A total of 256 system configurations were simulated to identify the most economically viable and environmentally sustainable solutions for these convenience stores. The study provides a comprehensive understanding of the impact of these variables on the financial and operational feasibility of microgrid systems. The findings are crucial for informing policymakers, energy planners, and business owners, offering practical guidance for designing and implementing effective energy strategies within Taiwan's convenience store sector. By advocating for the adoption of microgrid technology, this study contributes to Taiwan's broader goals of achieving carbon neutrality and improving energy security and plays a key role in reducing dependence on conventional grid systems. This work supports transitioning to a more sustainable, resilient, and future-proof energy infrastructure. © 2024 IEEE.

The project staff investigates and discovers if the output contact of the protection relay fails in an electrical accident. In a short-circuit accident, the protection relay may not issue commands to fix the fault by activating the switch. The investigation result can be used to find the primary cause of the accident and why the equipment was damaged. In replacing the faulty protection relay, all newly installed relays must be tested to verify the functionality of their input and output contacts. Precautionary measures need to be ensured to prevent a similar incident. Poor equipment quality and improper installation cause a newly added power system's protection relay not to output signals correctly. Despite general procedures of testing the relay's output and input contacts before integrating the relay into the grid, accidents caused by the abovementioned reasons are still unavoidable. In this study, an in-depth analysis of the data logs and relevant protection relay settings was conducted, focusing on reliability and failure prevention. The analysis result revealed that the protection relay of transformer temperature was set conservatively, failing the backup protection. The case study results and discussions in this study provide a reference for power engineering designers and a guiding framework for accident analysis. © 2024 IEEE.

The study centers on a comprehensive cost-effectiveness analysis of solar and wind power generation within the microgrid system located in the Changbin Industrial Zone. This region, characterized by favorable solar irradiance and wind conditions, is an ideal location for developing and implementing renewable energy systems. Through extensive simulations, we examined the impact of temperature fluctuations on photovoltaic (PV) module efficiency and the influence of varying wind turbine heights on energy output. Our findings revealed that temperature plays a crucial role in determining the performance of PV modules, with higher temperatures leading to a noticeable decline in efficiency. Conversely, wind power generation is significantly affected by the height of wind turbines, where increased height results in enhanced energy capture due to stronger and more consistent wind speeds at elevated altitudes. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of considering seasonal variations, as these can significantly influence the overall efficiency and reliability of renewable energy systems within a microgrid. By optimizing wind turbine heights and incorporating strategies to mitigate the effects of temperature fluctuations on solar panels, the study demonstrates that it is possible to significantly improve the overall power generation efficiency of the microgrid system. Improving efficiency reduces the cost per kilowatt-hour of electricity generated, thereby enhancing the economic viability of renewable energy projects. The insights gained from this analysis are expected to provide valuable guidance for future renewable energy planning, particularly in regions with similar climatic and geographical conditions. such strategic planning is essential for maximizing the return on investment and ensuring the long-term sustainability of renewable energy systems. © 2024 IEEE.

In the past, gearboxes were used in wind turbines to adjust the rotor rotational speed. With advancements in the technology of wind turbines, wind farm developers adopt direct-drive wind turbines based on permanent magnet synchronous generators. In the power quality analysis in wind farms, the wind turbine model is used to simulate the electrical characteristics of wind turbines to meet regulatory requirements. However, it takes considerable time for a detailed analysis and assessment of wind turbine models in the early stages of large wind farms. Therefore, based on direct-drive wind turbines, we used power systems computer aided design (PsCAD) to construct several wind turbine units (sWTU) and scale component models (sCM). The model's performance was explored regarding tip speed ratio, pitch angle, and output power at different wind speeds. The practicality and performance of aggregated models were evaluated effectively in power system analysis. © 2024 IEEE.

With the advance of network technology in recent years, the dissemination and exchange of massive documents has become commonplace. Accordingly, the importance of content analysis techniques is increasing. Topic analysis in large-scale document streams such as E-mails and news articles is an important research issue. This paper addresses techniques for "topic activation analysis" for document streams. For example, when news articles with a strong relationship to a given topic arrive frequently in a news stream, we can regard the activation level of the topic as high. In [I], Kleinberg proposed a method for analyzing document streams. Although the main objective of his method was to detect bursts of topics, it can also be used for topic activation analysis. His method, however, has a serious limitation in that it only looks at the arrival rate of documents and ignores the degree of relevance for each document. Another limitation is that his method is "batch-oriented." This paper first proposes a novel topic activation analysis scheme that incorporates both document arrival rate and relevance to address the first problem. It then presents an incremental scheme more appropriate for a document streaming environment. The proposed schemes are validated by experiments using real CNN news articles. Copyright 2005 ACM.

In recent years, the style transfer is being studied in the field of AI. It extracts a style from one data set and applies to another data set. This technique is actively studied mainly in computer vision. It is also being studied in music and speech processing with many deep learning methods. However, no research focused on changes in performance expression of music. Performance expression of music refers to the player's artistic interpretation of a piece of music, the changes in performance, and the techniques used to achieve these changes. Changes in performance are represented by slow and fast beats, changes in strength and weakness. In this study, as a part of the study of analysis and creation of performance expression models of music, the image style transfer method is applied to musical expression. In addition, in order to analyze the relationship between musical structure and musical expression, the implication-realization model of music theory is used to extract the structure of music to improve the performance of style transfer. The analysis result shows that the I-R model captures the feature of musical expression well, and moreover, the style transfer method is shown to be useful for analyzing performance expression of music. It will lead to the study of music performance expression style extraction and will contribute to the analysis and creation of performance expression models of music. © 2023 ACM.

Ultrasonic interfacial crosslinking of TiO2-based nanocomposite hydrogels through thiol-norbornene reactions for sonodynamic antibacterial treatment

Nanocomposite (NC) hydrogels used for sonodynamic therapy (sDT) face challenges such as lacking interfacial interactions between the polymers and nanomaterials as well as presenting uneven dispersion of nanomaterials in the hydrogel network, reducing their mechanical properties and treatment efficiency. Here, we demonstrate a promising approach of co-engineering nanomaterials and interfacial crosslinking to expand the materials construction and biomedical applications of NC hydrogels in sDT. In this work, mesoporous silica-coated titanium dioxide nanoparticles with thiolated surface functionalization (TiO2@Ms-sH) are utilized as crosslinkers to react with norbornene-functionalized dextran (Nor-Dex) through ultrasound-triggered thiol-norbornene reactions, forming TiO2@Ms-sH/Nor-Dex NC hydrogels. The TiO2@Ms-sH nanoparticles act not only as multivalent crosslinkers to improve the mechanical properties of hydrogels under ultrasound irradiation but also as reactive oxygen species (ROs) generators to allow the use of TiO2@Ms-sH/Nor-Dex NC hydrogels in sDT applications. Particularly, the TiO2@Ms-sH/Nor-Dex NC hydrogels present tailorable microstructures, properties, and sonodynamic killing of bacteria through the modulation of the ultrasound frequency. Taken together, a versatile TiO2-based NC hydrogel platform prepared under ultrasonic interfacial crosslinking reactions is developed for advancing the applications in sDT. © 2023 The Royal society of Chemistry.

IoT edge platform has become popular in various distributed environments. The edge devices need to communicate BigData among them or with the cloud servers by collaborating with AI technologies for finding events from the applications. Those devices exchange data streams from such as distributed sensors and remote image/video devices. We focus on an acceleration technique for the communication performance using a stream-based lossless data compression technology. This paper proposes a parallelization technique for the compression process in a software environment running on a multicore processor. The technique invokes concurrent compression processes assigned to multiple threads with splitting a data stream to chunks. The paper exposes three scheduling methods for assigning the chunks to the threads: in-order, hybrid and out-of-order. As an original data order of chunks must be obtained in decompression side, the proposed technique introduces packeting mechanisms in each chunk by adding headers to support the scheduling methods. Through experimental performance evaluations, we discuss the packeting overhead focusing on compression ratio and speedup by the parallelization with three scheduling methods. © 2023 IEEE.
