This paper focuses on a performance enhancement of communication performance by compressing data stream. AsE coding is an effective lossless data compression method for data stream. The software implementation of the coding/decoding method inevitably meets a performance mismatch in memory and storage devices. In the compressor side, it is predictable to decide the size of an original data block and is available to process a flexible buffer memory. However, the decompressor is not able to predict the buffer size because the original data size is not obvious before the decompression. This causes a performance mismatch in the filesystem level. This paper proposes a novel method to address the performance mismatch by applying a notification mechanism of compression size from the compressor. This paper describes the mechanism focusing on the system call usage. Through experimental evaluations, we show the performance improvement of the decompression performance for handling data stream. © 2023 IEEE.

A person-computer ensemble system is one of time concerned cooperative systems, which performs the secondo in an ensemble played by a computer-controlled piano cooperating with the primo played by a person musician. For expressive performances, it is necessary to prepare very expressive secondo data before the actual cooperative performance, since the system is modified its expression in realtime using the agogic information calculated from the input stream of the primo. In this paper, a generating method of more expressive performance of the secondo, using the notions musical structures and structural functions, are introduced. © 2012 springer-Verlag.

Changes in fluoride removal ability of chicken bone char (CBC) were investigated by both remained amounts of carbon including organic substances and crystallite size of hydroxyapatite in the CBC. Carbon contents in CBC were controlled by heating time at 600°C. Although temperature for crystal-grain growth for HAp, 650°C, was higher than 600°C, crystallite size of HAp in CBC increased with heating time. Fluoride ion removal ability positively related to the amount of remaining carbon and negatively related to the square of crystallite size, as an index of surface area, of HAp. These results suggested that fluoride ion removal from water by CBC is not only by ion exchange and/or dissolution-precipitation process, but also by adsorption by carbon and/or temporal capture of fluoride ion by microstructure of carbonate in CBC before immobilize it in apatite structure. © 2019 The Authors. Electroencephalography (EEG) signals are recorded for knowing the electrical activity of the brain from the scalp, and the recorded waveform provides acquits into the dynamic aspects of brain activity. This study incorporates the circuit design and device development to achieve the Electroencephalography signal acquisition front-end circuit design for future Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) applications. The amplitude of acquired signals should be strong enough and is usually expressed in the unit of millivolts. The data acquisition procedure consists three stages: 1) The acquisition of original EEG signal can be done by the active electrode and an instrumentation amplifier with a smaller gain;2) Improves the signal quality by using band-pass filter and band-stop filter;3) Those EEG signals convert into the digital code through the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that will be integrated into a micro-controller. The digital code is stored into an embedded memory and is further transmitted via the Bluetooth module. The experimental results show that the system could implement the acquisition and storage of the EEG signals efficiently. The size of the printed circuit board (PCB) for the proposed design is smaller than 5.5 cm2. This system would be a benefit to all involved in the use of EEG for clinical diagnosis and monitoring, or even for the braincomputer interface. © 2020 IEEE.

Document clustering has been used as a core technique in managing vast amount of data and providing needed information. In on-line environments, generally new information gains more interests than old one. Traditional clustering focuses on grouping similar documents into clusters by treating each document with equal weight. We proposed a novelty-based incremental clustering method for on-line documents that has biases on recent documents. In the clustering method, the notion of 'novelty' is incorporated into a similarity function and a clustering method, a variant of the K-means method, is proposed. We examine the efficiency and behaviors of the method by experiments. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, we describe the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) implementation of our City-LEs code on detailed large eddy simulations, including the multi-physical phenomena on fluid dynamics, heat absorption and reflection by surface and building materials, cloud effects, and even sunlight effect. Because a detailed simulation involving these phenomena is required for analyses at the street level and several meters of resolution, the computation amount is enormous, and ordinary CPU computation cannot provide sufficient performance. Therefore, we implemented the entire code on GPU clusters with large-scale computing. We applied OpenACC coding to incrementally implement relatively easy programming and eliminate data transfers between the CPU and GPU memories. Based on this research, we determined that the elimination of data transfers is effective, even in the case where a part of the code execution on the GPU is slower than the CPU, owing to the absence of spatial parallelism. The objective of this study is to perform a complete climate simulation on a few square-kilometers field around the Tokyo station, considering the finest resolution of the original highlighted area of the Marathon race in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. We successfully transferred the entire code to the GPU to provide approximately eight times the performance of CPU-only computation on multi-GPU per node with a large scale cluster. © 2022, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

In the high-performance computing domain, Field programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is a novel accelerator that exhibits high flexibility and performance characteristics distinct from other accelerators such as the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). Recent advanced high-end FPGA is equipped with multiple channels of high speed optical link up to 100Gbps performance for each. This is a crucial feature when we construct PC clusters with FPGAs as accelerators, however it is not easy to utilize from user kernels because this feature is implemented in low level and simple direct communication between neighboring FPGAs. In order to provide the communication feature between FPGAs for accelerated PC clusters, we developed a communication system named CIRCUs which implies a user-friendly API from OpenCL and is equipped with routing function over multi-hop communication on multi-dimensional torus network of FPGAs. However, current CIRCUs only provides a point-to-point communication between source and destination FPGAs. In ordinary parallel processing environment such as MPI, the user program the message passing with various collective communication functions for parallel algorithm, for instance Allreduce, Allgather, etc. In this paper, we implement the collective communication function over CIRCUs for user-friendly programming of ordinary parallel algorithms on FPGAs. As the first target, we implement Allreduce function which is the most essential and important function. The paper describes the CIRCUs system briefly followed by the design, implementation and preliminary performance evaluation on Intel stratix10 FPGAs. © 2023 ACM.

This paper proposes a spatial index structure based on a new space-partitioning method. Previous research proposed various high dimensional index structures. However, when dimensionality becomes high, the effectiveness of the spatial index structure disappears. This problem is called the "curse of dimensionality". This paper focuses on the fact that the volume of high dimensional space is mostly occupied by its surface and then proposes a new surface index structure. The utility of this new surface spatial index structure is illustrated through a series of experiments. © springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Transient analysis of an advanced static Var compensator using quad-series voltage-source PAM inverters

He is engaged in research on reactive power compensators.

This paper deals with an advanced static Var compensator (AsVC) using quad-series voltage-source PAM inverters. The AsVC consists of four three-phase voltage-source inverters with a common de capacitor and four three-phase transformers, each primary winding of which is connected in series with each other. Each inverter outputs a square-wave voltage, while the synthesized output voltage of the AsVC has a 24-step wave shape. This results not only in a great reduction of harmonic currents and de voltage ripples but also in fewer switching and snubbing losses. In this paper, transient analysis is performed with the focus on the response of reactive power and the resonance between the de capacitor and ac reactors. Experimental results obtained from a small-rated laboratory model of 10 kVA are also shown to verify analytical results based on the p-q transformation. The analytical results help in the design of system parameters such as the capacity of the de capacitor and feedback gains.

Recently, the development of a versatile robot hand aiming at the application to an artificial arm or a humanoid robot is in demand. In this paper, omni-directional bending mechanism which is called "double-screw- drive mechanism" was applied to a robot hand. The robot hands with two fingers and three fingers were built. For the robot hand with three fingers, each fingertip was controlled so as to track the elliptical orbit and experiment was carried out. The DsD robot hand succeeded in rotating the cap of the PET bottle and removing the cap from the bottle. © 2009 sICE.
