Effect of tensile axial loading on seismic performance (plastic shear deformation) of a laminated rubber bearing (LRB) was clarified. Cyclic loading tests were carried out to evaluate the relation between lateral force and lateral displacement of the LRB under seismic conditions (i.e., axial loading) and under worn conditions (i.e., 300 cycles). A strain measurement scheme based on image analysis was used to obtain the local strain fields of the LRB. Localized strain fields under tensile axial loading occurred more markedly at the corners of the free surface of the LRB than those under compressive axial loading. The seismic performance of the LRB under tensile or compressive axial loading was degraded severely after shear deformation incurred during 300 cycles. After 300 cycles, for the LRB under compressive axial loading, large localized shear strain fields occurred at the rubber layers underneath and on the inner steel plates, whereas, for the LRB under tensile axial loading, such large strain fields occurred at the rubber layers around the upper and lower steel plates. © 2005 EUCENTRE. The purpose of this study is to investigate the disinfection effect of Near-UV LED light, which is pulsed using PWM control, on staphylococcus aureus. To evaluate the disinfection effect of Near-UV LED light, three types of Near-UV LEDs with wavelengths of 395 nm, 385 nm, and 365 nm were installed within a sealed space inside an incubator and energized with a forward current of 1000 mA and a forward voltage of 3.6 V, and the disinfection rate under each type of light was assessed. Additionally, the disinfection effect was evaluated when the same three types of Near-UV LEDs were pulsed with a 50% duty cycle. As a result, 100% disinfection was achieved with 365 nm Near-UV LED direct-current irradiation for 120 seconds, and a 93% disinfection rate was obtained with pulsed irradiation for 150 seconds. © 2024 IEEE.

In the research of historical Japanese documents, examination of kaou monograms plays a very important role for specifying the author's identity and the genuineness of the document This work aims to develop a kaou search/browsing system usable via World Wide Web (WWW), for aiding the research of historical documents. One of the requirements to the system is that the kaou images should be retrievable based on their similarity. Formerly, kaou images were retrieved using contour characteristics only, even though the color characteristics are also important for the research of kaous. In the developed method, the color characteristics have been introduced to improve the accuracy of similar kaou image retrieval. The feasibility of the developed method and the system design have been evaluated in a prototype system.

This study proposed a novel extraction method of c-Fos protein regions in DAB(3,3'-diaminobenzidine)-stained mouse brain slice images using the U-Net model combined with the multi-channelization and 1×1 convolution techniques. Our U-Net m odel, called 1× 1 conv U-Net, was applied to three DAB- strainedmouse slice images whose resolutions were 1000x1000 pixels. The experimental results demonstrated that the 1×1 conv U-Net outperformed the conventional U-Net. © 2024 IEEE.

He received a master of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland and a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University. From 1984 to 1997 he was employed at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division Annapolis Detachment (formerly David Taylor Research Center) where he worked on the development of advanced centrifugal compressor air conditioning plants for shipboard applications. He received the Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award in 1998 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in recognition of his exceptional leadership and technical achievements in eliminating ozone-depleting substances from Navy ships. He is licensed as a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Texas. David A. Breslin P.E.:is the Director of Technical Operations for the Naval Surface Warfare Center and is the Chairperson of the ASNE Committee on Environmental Engineering. He received a master of science in aerospace engineering from Virginia Tech in 1991 a master of engineering administration in industrial & systems engineering from Virginia Tech in 1991 and a bachelor of engineering in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1985. From 1993 to 1997 he was the program manager of the Naval Sea Systems Command's CFC & Halon Elimination Program. Because of his many efforts he received a Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award in 1995 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in recognition of “exceptional contributions to global environmental protection”. Gregory P. Brunner:was employed by the Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center and Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) from 1983 until 1997. From 1993 to 1997 he served as the R&D program manager for the NAVSEA CFC & Halon Elimination Program Office. Program efforts resulted in the development of new refrigerants for backfit into existing shipboard air-conditioning

The domestic production of the most powerful Ozone-Depleting substances (ODss) has permanently ceased and the abundant supplies of a number of inexpensive refrigerants, fire-fighting agents, and solvents, once taken for granted, are now a thing of the past. The Navy's original strategy of conserving ODss, converting systems and processes where feasible, relying on strategic reserves where necessary, and developing "ozone-friendly" equip ment for new-design surface ships and submarines is succeeding. The purpose of this paper is to document the Navy's efforts to date relative to combating the threat to uninterrupted Fleet operations posed by the cessation of ODs production. specifically, this paper addresses the Navy's shipboard conversion programs for air-conditioning and refrigeration (AC&R) systems, the development of next-generation AC&R systems, the selection of halon substitutes for new-construction fire-fighting systems, and the Navy's alternative to CFC-113 in the cleaning of critical oxygen systems.

Introduction Polymers exhibit larger elongation and more significant rate- and time-dependent behavior at higher temperature [1]. To understand properties of polymer matrix composites and to correctly evaluate their performance characteristics, therefore, it is one of the most important issues to elucidate the time- and rate-dependent nonlinear behavior of polymer matrix composites at elevated temperature. The objective of the present study is to elucidate characteristics of the short-term stress relaxation behavior of angle-ply CFRP laminates at high temperature. The stress relaxation curves for various angle-ply laminates are presented. By the normalization with respect to the maximum stress at the beginning of each relaxation test, we obtain a master relaxation curve that is characterized by the off-axis time-dependent response of constituent unidirectional plies.

Anaerobic fermentation for hydrogen production is influenced by various environmental factors that can limit microbial activity. However, machine learning (ML) shows significant potential in explaining the complexity of biological processes. This study focuses on the application of ML in predicting hydrogen production rates (HPR) during anaerobic fermentation of biomass energy. Grey relation analysis was employed to investigate the correlation between operational parameters and HPR. Five ML algorithms, namely decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN), were utilized in conjunction with operating conditions and digestate characteristics as features, with HPR as the target variable. The evaluation of the models was conducted using mean squared error (MsE) and R squared (R2). Notably, butyrate, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), and volatile suspended solids (Vss) were identified as key factors influencing hydrogen production during sucrose anaerobic fermentation. Among the ML algorithms tested, XGBoost achieved the highest accuracy, with an R2 value of 0.91 and an MsE of 0.0052. © 2024 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

A set of guidelines, illustrated with a case study of an international FMEA project facilitated with a Google Groups website, is aimed to help organizations optimize their use of Web-based collaborative environments. An FMEA team assembled in a physical location has drawbacks that can hamper performance and feasibility and the processes. Provision of an online venue for FMEAs enables collaboration with external entities, thus improving the quality of the information developed. The purpose of the FMEA process is to bring together people with unique experiences and perspectives to generate information that no one person could visualize alone. A process FMEA must have manufacturing engineers or people involved directly with the process, whereas a design FMEA may have a manufacturing representative to provide additional perspective. A meeting conducted by the FMEA team included elements such as limited period time for completing team tasks and confirming website availability.

This research aims to build a mathematical model to formulate the problems of implementing knowledge management systems in companies that often face obstacles in achieving the desired objectives and goals. With increasing competition in the business sector, organizations or organizations realize the importance of utilizing the knowledge assets that reside in each individual and organization. If this knowledge can be managed optimally, it can become a competitive advantage for the company due to the emergence of innovative ideas by the concepts of knowledge management theory. By implementing optimal knowledge management (KM), companies can design innovative solutions to improve business operations and increase overall revenue. The factor analysis method will be used to find the determining factors for the success of the implementation of knowledge management systems (KMs) and the regression analysis method will also be used to form a mathematical model of several new factors which are formed as independent variables with the current level of community understanding of KMs as the dependent variable. The research results provide insight into strategies to improve success factors to successfully facilitate KMs implementation. This study contributes to existing knowledge management by providing insight into dynamics that go beyond the technical aspects of KMs, ultimately developing strategies for more effective and efficient utilization of knowledge and organizational growth and supporting competitive advantage for companies. © 2024 IEEE.
