Due to the variety of household electric devices and different power consumption habits of consumers at present, it is a challenge to identify various electric appliances without any presetting. This paper proposed the smart appliance management system for recognizing of electric appliances in home network, which can measure the power consumption of household appliances through a current sensing device. The characteristics and categories of related electric appliances are established, and this system could search the corresponding cluster data and eliminates noise for recognition functionality and error detection mechanism of electric appliances by applying the current clustering algorithm. At the same time, this system integrates household appliance control network services to control them based on users' power consumption plans, thus realizing a bidirectional monitoring service. In practical tests, the system reached a recognition rate of 95%, and could successfully control general household appliances in home network. © 2012 springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper proposes a multiobjective heuristic search approach to support a project portfolio selection technique on scenarios with a large number of candidate projects. The original formulation for the technique requires analyzing all combinations of candidate projects, which is unfeasible when more than a few alternatives are available. We have used a multiobjective genetic algorithm to partially explore the search space of project combinations and select the most effective ones. We present an experimental study based on four project selection problems that compares the results found by the genetic algorithm to those yielded by a non-systematic search procedure. Results show evidence that the project selection technique can be used in large-scale scenarios and that GA presents better results than simpler search strategy. Carbon metabolism, which is an important process underlying the plant development, has been extensively studied in model plant Arabidopsis, however the understanding in this process for cassava root crop is very little. To enhance our understanding into the process, we studied carbon partitioning during cassava root development at the transcriptional level via transciptomic data integration into the metabolic pathways. The transcriptome data of three different developmental stages of cassava roots—fibrous root (FR), developing storage root (DR), and mature storage root (MR) from Yang et al. [1] —was integrated into the key carbon metabolism pathways reconstructed following the protocol of Rongsirikul et al. [2] . According to the 43 differentially expressed genes (56 proteins IDs) mapped into the pathways, we found that the genes involved in starch biosynthesis are more up-regulated, in contrast to the expression of genes in the cell wall biosynthesis and respiration. The results may imply the significance of starch biosynthesis among the carbon utilization processes in the developing cassava roots. In other words, the carbon source from α-D-glucose-1-phosphate (G1P) might be mostly used for starch biosynthesis rather than cell wall biosynthesis and respiration pathways during cassava root development.

An advanced two-fluid model has been developed in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). In this model, an interface tracking method is combined with a two-fluid model. In this procedure, liquid clusters and bubbles larger than a computational cell are calculated using the interface tracking method, and those smaller than a cell are simulated by the two-fluid model. A turbulent dispersion force term is one of the most important constitutive equations for advanced two-fluid model. We have developed the new model for turbulent dispersion force and verified the developed model using the 3-dimensional two-fluid model code ACE-3D, and the comparisons between the results of the analyses and air-water two-phase flow experiments in 200 mm diameter pipe. In this study, to verify the applicability of developed model for middle diameter vertical pipe, we compared between the analyses of results and air-water two-phase flow experiments in 38 mm diameter pipe. © 2011 The Japan society of Mechanical Engineers.

The paper presents a dynamic provisioning mechanism through which service providers can exploit the unused allowable down time of the connections to serve the additional upcoming requests. The algorithm work based on the holding time of the connections and the failure arrival rate over the selected primary or backup paths. The proposed mechanism in this paper routes the requests in a way that any service level agreement (sLA) violation is either avoided or minimized. To achieve this goal, the already established paths are flagged with a newly proposed path metric, path risk factor, to create a memory-aware mechanism of paths' history showing the risk tolerance to sLA violation. This path attribute can be disseminated over the network as a metric of prospective connections. The algorithm takes advantage of the already established connections' history to select the best path regarding the sLA violation with the lowest cost. simulation results verify that the proposed mechanism has better performance in terms of the blocking rate, the availability satisfaction rate, and the resource utilization than existing algorithms. Performance evaluation is done over two different simulation environments, the network with high link failure arrival rate and the network with normal link failure arrival rate. In addition to the better performance over both network topologies, the algorithm provides more revenue for service providers compared to standard and existing algorithms. © 2011 HTE.

In wireless body sensor networks, sensors may be installed on various body limbs to wirelessly collect body information for homecare services. The orientations and accelerations on each limb are different for various motion states. For example, each limb has different acceleration when walking versus running, and orientation when standing versus lying. According to the above information, the body motion state may be decided. Furthermore, each person has unique body characteristics such as height, foot pitch, and motion habit to effect the body reconstruction. Therefore, it is a challenging issue how to present human motions through 3D skeleton system simulation, and achieve an adaptive reconstruction of human motion on wireless body sensor networks according to the different body characteristics of each person. In this study, we proposed a novel scheme to utilize multiple triple axis accelerometer and gyroscopes to measure limb accelerations, then calculated the locations of limbs and try to employ kinematic theory to reconstruct human body skeleton, called 3D Adaptive human Motion Reconstruction (AMR). And we applied Body Correction Algorithm (BCA) to correct human body characteristics and filtered the error of transmission noise. This system was tested and validated with success. © 2011 IEEE.

Numerous genome-wide association studies (GWAs) have been performed in order to determine the susceptible loci of diseases. However, most diseases still cannot be explained by a single locus. Pathway-based methods address this problem by combining those small effects into groups of related genes or pathways. However, because pathway-based approaches consist of multiple steps, there is much room for improvement. This paper presents an improved method for translating list of sNPs from GWAs into list of genes. We incrementally adjusted and compared different modifications applied to Parkinson's disease (PD) genome-wide sNP data and then used GsEA-P to analyze the resulting list of genes. After careful adjustments, we are able to identify more relevant pathways that were not found previously. © 2011 IEEE.
