A self-Healing WDM Access Network with Protected Fiber and FsO Link Paths Effective Against Fiber Breaks

In this article, an additional protected fiber and free-space optical (FsO) link path is proposed, to provide self-healing capabilities for protection against fiber faults in wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) systems. The new optical line terminal (OLT), remote node (RN), and optical network unit (ONU) in the presented PON architecture result in self-protective function against fiber breakpoints. In the measurement, 25 Gbit/s on-off keying (OOK) modulation was applied on each WDM channel to assess the downstream and upstream signals after 25 km single-mode fiber (sMF) and 25 km sMF + 2 m FsO connections, respectively. In addition to using protected fiber paths for self-healing operations. This PON system can also apply the FsO link method. The measured bit error rate (BER) for all downstream and upstream traffic was maintained below 3.8 × 10−3 with forward error correction (FEC). The detected optical power sensitivity of the proposed self-restorative fiber- and FsO-based WDM-PON for downstream and upstream WDM signals ranged from −33.5 to −28.5 dBm and from −33 to −28.5 dBm, respectively, and the corresponding power budgets of the downstream and upstream WDM signals were between 29.5 and 30.5 dB and 33 and 38 dB, respectively. © 2025 by the authors.

In this article, we propose an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser with a quintuple-ring design to achieve single-longitudinal-mode (sLM) operation and stable and wide wavelength selectable over the L-band range. The mode-filtering effect produced by the quintuple-ring scheme can mitigate side-mode oscillations, enabling stable sLM output and extending the wavelength-tunable bandwidth from 1558.0 nm to 1620.0 nm (62 nm). The matching optical signal-to-noise ratio (OsNR), output power, optical and maximum output fluctuations in both power and wavelength are verified and discussed across the accessible wavelength output bandwidth. Furthermore, the proposed quintuple-ring configuration effectively narrows the laser linewidth to the sub-kHz target.

This paper proposes the optimal operation of Ess (Energy storage system) in the substation of urban railway in an economical point of view. since the load patterns of urban railway have different characteristics with the general power demand pattern, the characteristics motivate us to develop the optimal operation algorithm for Ess under Korean electricity billing system. We also introduce two different Ess operation strategies for peak load shaving and electricity consumption charge minimization respectively, and formulate each scheme. Historical data from Namgwangju substation are used for economical comparison of the strategies. The results show that the proposed algorithm is the most cost-effective Ess operation scheme among the strategies and reduces around 5 percent of electric charges compared to the charge without Ess operation. © 2015 The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.

The aims of the demand response market are stabilization of the power supply and improving of the reliability of the power system. The various applications of the energy storage system (Ess) in the railway systems are studied and implemented to raise the energy efficiency. It is one of the most important how to determine the obligation reduction capacity (ORC) in participation to the demand response market because it has an influence on the profit extremely. In this paper, when participating to the demand response market with demands in the urban railway, we calculated the available ORC and economically evaluated Ess based on the real load data. To execute load curtailment efficiently for Urban Railway Load, the load patterns of the Urban Railway Load and available amount of load curtailment over the Urban Railway Load are analyzed through comparing the load to the common power loads. In addition, the current policies of the load curtailment for the Urban Railway Load are investigated and the problems of those are presented. Based on the researches, the optimal load curtailment strategies for the Urban Railway Load are proposed to minimize the consumer's utility diminishment and the costs of the use of energies. Finally, the optimal load curtailment strategies are applied to the real Urban Railway Load, the results shows that proposed methods are efficient and cost effective while the amount of load curtailment is minimized. With the development of machine learning, numerical analysis using neural networks has been devised. Remarkably, physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) enable physically consistent numerical analysis by introducing a loss function that conforms to relevant governing equations. Moreover, research is rapidly advancing for the application of PINNs to inverse analysis in areas such as physical property identification. For a PINN to learn governing equations, the weights of the loss functions should be properly determined because they have different roles in components such as boundary conditions, initial conditions, and governing equations. However, weight setting is generally challenging. We propose a loss balancing method considering the procedure for solving partial differential equations. The proposed method is validated through comparisons with conventional solvers. © 2024 IEEE.

Transient analysis of an advanced static Var compensator using quad-series voltage-source PAM inverters

He is engaged in research on reactive power compensators.

This paper deals with an advanced static Var compensator (AsVC) using quad-series voltage-source PAM inverters. The AsVC consists of four three-phase voltage-source inverters with a common de capacitor and four three-phase transformers, each primary winding of which is connected in series with each other. Each inverter outputs a square-wave voltage, while the synthesized output voltage of the AsVC has a 24-step wave shape. This results not only in a great reduction of harmonic currents and de voltage ripples but also in fewer switching and snubbing losses. In this paper, transient analysis is performed with the focus on the response of reactive power and the resonance between the de capacitor and ac reactors. Experimental results obtained from a small-rated laboratory model of 10 kVA are also shown to verify analytical results based on the p-q transformation. The analytical results help in the design of system parameters such as the capacity of the de capacitor and feedback gains.

Upon graduation he began his career with the Navy in NavShips and in 1971 he transferred to the ship arrangements branch of NavSec. He was selected for the Navy long-term training program at The George Washington University in 1974 and completed the program in 1976 with the degree of master of engineering administration. While at NavSec he served as a task leader on numerous ship designs. He was selected for the first class of the NavSea commander's development program. While on that program he served in NavSea combat system program management system engineering and machinery engineering positions and also was assigned to the Navy secretariat. In 1985 he joined the staff of the assistant secretary of the Navy for shipbuilding and logistics where he is the assistant director for naval construction.

This paper begins with comments on accomplishments in sealift and a summary of current problems in fast sealift. These include: few fast sealift ships in the inventory, a diminishing industrial base capable of producing such ships, and a lack of production programs to build ships that would increase our national fast sealift capability. The paper discusses strategic mobility concepts and highlights system interactions and linkages in moving war materials and replacement forces from depots and factories to the front lines. From this foundation, the paper then discusses operational requirements “pull” as related to analysis and allocation of performance among components of the strategic mobility system. sealift technology options are characterized and performance potential of these options are described. These characterizations include speed, ship lift capacity, equal cost fleet size, and fuel demands for a range of speeds from 24 to 50 knots. Performance potential for each option includes the total fleet lift capability stream over a 100-day time span for a notional mission with and without an assumed rate of attrition. Alternative program plans are described for each technology option addressing technological risk, system and component development needs, design requirements, production strategies, acquisition time lines, and resource requirements. The paper then revisits the operational requirements from a technologist's perspective. In a technology “push” approach, a set of practical and achievable requirements are selected that could be the basis of an effective and cost efficient production program for fast sealift ships. Finally, the paper concludes with a call to action that would suggest a modest reallocation of transportation resources to establish and sustain a fast sealift production program, sustain a sector of the maritime industrial base hard pressed by a lack of commercial shipbuilding, and achieve a relatively near-term increase in fast sealift capabil

Crawler cranes are used in various applications, including plant construction and civil engineering. However, accidents caused by hazardous events, such as overturning the entire body or overshadowing of a suspended load, can be problematic. Because crawler cranes are large and powerful machines, simulators are required to analyze the relationship between such hazardous events and human operations. This study proposed a framework for a mixed-reality simulator to analyze the interactions between humans and crawler cranes. This framework combined the high-performance graphics capabilities of Unreal Engine 5 with the high-precision multibody dynamics analysis of MATLAB simscape to create a visually and physically realistic simulation. Moreover, the quantification of the decision-making process was possible based on the eye-tracking information of the operator. This study described the implementation of these features and discussed the prospects for human-crawler crane interaction analysis using this simulator. © 2024 IEEE.

In response to the decreasing number of engineering and science graduates nationwide, the aerospace industry must explore new ways to attract new college students. Because women now comprise a majority of all college students nationwide, but remain underrepresented in technical majors, industry initiatives aimed at attracting women to careers in aerospace can have dramatically positive results. Higher education in engineering and the hard sciences has grappled with similar problems for decades, and has made progress toward solving those problems through a variety of initiatives focused on the unique needs and interests of women. This paper explores the nature of the aerospace industry and presents solutions adapted from higher education to attract more women to careers in aerospace.
