Comparison between one-stage and two-stage CT-guided localization of lung nodules with surgical resection: a single medical center experience

Background: This retrospective study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of one-stage computed tomography (OSCT)- to that of two-stage computed tomography (TSCT)-guided localization for the surgical removal of small lung nodules. Methods: We collected data from patients with ipsilateral pulmonary nodules who underwent localization before surgical removal at Veteran General Hospital Kaohsiung between October 2017 and January 2022. The patients were divided into the OSCT and TSCT groups. Results: We found that OSCT significantly reduced the localization time and risky time compared to TSCT, and the success rate of localization and incidence of pneumothorax were similar in both groups. However, the time spent under general anesthesia was longer in the OSCT group than in the TSCT group. Conclusions: The OSCT-guided approach to localize pulmonary nodules in hybrid operation room is a safe and effective technique for the surgical removal of small lung nodules. © The Author(s) 2024.

Background: To evaluate the effect of the weighting of input imaging combo and ADC threshold on the performance of the U-Net and to find an optimized input imaging combo and ADC threshold in segmenting acute ischemic stroke (AIS) lesion. Methods: This study retrospectively enrolled a total of 212 patients having AIS. Four combos, including ADC-ADC-ADC (AAA), DWI-ADC-ADC (DAA), DWI-DWI-ADC (DDA), and DWI-DWI-DWI (DDD), were used as input images, respectively. Three ADC thresholds including 0.6, 0.8 and 1.8 × 10^–3 mm²/s were applied. Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) was used to evaluate the segmentation performance of U-Nets. Nonparametric Kruskal–Wallis test with Tukey–Kramer post-hoc tests were used for comparison. A p <.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The DSC significantly varied among different combos of images and different ADC thresholds. Hybrid U-Nets outperformed uniform U-Nets at ADC thresholds of 0.6 × 10^–3 mm²/s and 0.8 × 10^–3 mm²/s (p <.001). The U-Net with imaging combo of DDD had segmentation performance similar to hybrid U-Nets at an ADC threshold of 1.8 × 10^–3 mm²/s (p =.062 to 1). The U-Net using the imaging combo of DAA at the ADC threshold of 0.6 × 10^–3 mm²/s achieved the highest DSC in the segmentation of AIS lesion. Conclusions: The segmentation performance of U-Net for AIS varies among the input imaging combos and ADC thresholds. The U-Net is optimized by choosing the imaging combo of DAA at an ADC threshold of 0.6 × 10^–3 mm²/s in segmentating AIS lesion with highest DSC. Encapsulation of phages represents a key approach for improving phage stability and controlling phage delivery dosage. The hydrogel made from positively charged quaternized chitosan (QCS) and multivalent crosslinker, aldehyde-modified poly(xylitol sebacate)-co-poly(ethylene glycol) (APP) was introduced for the first time for drug (phage 44AHJD) delivery. The freeze-thawing (FT) treatment enhanced the porous structure and the stress resistance of native hydrogel with increased compression stress (stiffness) from 10 to 20 kPa. The stiffness of the phage-loaded hydrogel (FTP) was suitable for the proper release of phage particles and polymer chains, both working synergistically against bacterial growth. The FTP followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas model's anomalous diffusion of phage particles at different temperatures (30–45 °C) and pH (6.6–8.5) conditions. FTP was sensitive to pH, which released more phage particles at pH-neutral conditions, while the release under acidic and alkaline conditions was more based on gel degradation. The high biocompatibility of FTP hydrogel at its working concentration of 30 mg mL−1 was demonstrated through a hemolysis ratio of −1 of hydrogel debris were released after 10 h of hydrogel submerge treatment, which can fight the growing bacteria and the emergence of phage-resistant bacteria. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Developing biodegradable oil absorption fibrous materials is essential because discarding conventional separation materials could cause secondary pollution due to their nondegradable properties. In this study, highly hydrophobic and superoleophilic porous polylactic acid (PLA) fibers were prepared using centrifugal spinning combined with nonsolvent-induced phase separation. The porous structure of PLA fibers was controlled by the ratio between good solvent and nonsolvent in the spinning solutions. The morphology and physical properties of the obtained PLA fibers were investigated using various measurement techniques. The PLA fibrous membrane prepared from a PLA solution containing chloroform/dimethylformamide (80/20 w/w) indicated not only a high water contact angle but also a high oil sorption value. The porous PLA fibers are a potential candidate for use as green materials for environmental applications. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Indonesia is one of the countries that is endemic to avian influenza virus subtype H9N2. This study aims to compare the molecular characteristics of avian influenza virus (AIV) subtype H9N2 from West Java. Specific pathogen-free (SPF) embryonated chicken eggs were used to inoculate samples. RNA extraction and RT‒qPCR confirmed the presence of H9 and N2 genes in the samples. RT‒PCR was employed to amplify the H9N2-positive sample. Nucleotide sequences were obtained through Sanger sequencing and analyzed using MEGA 7. Homology comparison and phylogenetic tree analysis, utilizing the neighbor-joining tree method, assessed the recent isolate's similarity to reference isolates from GenBank. Molecular docking analysis was performed on the HA1 protein of the recent isolate and the A/Layer/Indonesia/WestJava-04/2017 isolate, comparing their interactions with the sialic acids Neu5Ac2-3Gal and Neu5Ac2-6Gal. RT‒qPCR confirmed the isolate samples as AIV subtype H9N2. The recent virus exhibited 11 amino acid residue differences compared to the A/Layer/Indonesia/WestJava-04/2017 isolate. Phylogenetically, the recent virus remains within the h9.4.2.5 subclade. Notably, at antigenic site II, the recent isolate featured an amino acid N at position 183, unlike A/Layer/Indonesia/WestJava-04/2017. Molecular docking analysis revealed a preference of HA1 from the 2017 virus for Neu5Ac2-3Gal, while the 2023 virus displayed a tendency to predominantly bind with Neu5Ac2-6Gal. In summary, the recent isolate displayed multiple mutations and a strong affinity for Neu5Ac2-6Gal, commonly found in mammals. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The study aimed to evaluate the impact of occupational noise on hearing loss among healthcare workers using audiometry. A longitudinal study was conducted with a six-month follow-up period in a hospital with 21 participants, divided into high-noise-exposure (HNE) and low-noise-exposure (LNE) groups. Mean noise levels were higher in the HNE group (70.4 ± 4.5 dBA), and hearing loss was measured using pure-tone audiometry at baseline and follow-up. Antioral cancer drugs need a greater antiproliferative impact on cancer than on normal cells. Demethoxymurrapanine (DEMU) inhibits proliferation in several cancer cells, but an in-depth investigation was necessary. This study evaluated the proliferation-modulating effects of DEMU, focusing on oral cancer and normal cells. DEMU (0, 2, 3, and 4 μg/mL) at 48 h treatments inhibited the proliferation of oral cancer cells (the cell viability (%) for Ca9-22 cells was 100.0 ± 2.2, 75.4 ± 5.6, 26.0 ± 3.8, and 15.4 ± 1.4, and for CAL 27 cells was 100.0 ± 9.4, 77.2 ± 5.9, 57.4 ± 10.7, and 27.1 ± 1.1) more strongly than that of normal cells (the cell viability (%) for S-G cells was 100.0 ± 6.6, 91.0 ± 4.6, 95.0 ± 2.6, and 95.8 ± 5.5), although this was blocked by the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine. The presence of oxidative stress was evidenced by the increase of reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial superoxide and the downregulation of the cellular antioxidant glutathione in oral cancer cells, but these changes were minor in normal cells. DEMU also caused greater induction of the subG1 phase, extrinsic and intrinsic apoptosis (annexin V and caspases 3, 8, and 9), and DNA damage (γH2AX and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine) in oral cancer than in normal cells. N-acetylcysteine attenuated all these DEMU-induced changes. Together, these data demonstrate the preferential antiproliferative function of DEMU in oral cancer cells, with the preferential induction of oxidative stress, apoptosis, and DNA damage in these cancer cells, and low cytotoxicity toward normal cells. © 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Background and Aims: Previous studies have explored the role of neurotrophins and their receptors, especially in forming deep endometriosis, endometriosis tissue invasion, and its effects on tissue proliferation. However, these studies do not include research on the pathogenesis of endometriomas. We tried to model the invasion of endometrioma tissue to find out more about its pathogenesis by using the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) as the host. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) to detect neurotrophin BDNF and its receptors, namely TrkB and P75, are employed and linked between their expression and the process of invasion and proliferation. Method: The endometriotic tissue samples were collected from women (n=27) who underwent hysteroscopy/laparoscopy at Dr. Sardjito Central Hospital. Peritoneal endometriosis (PE) lession, endometrioma (CC), and eutopic endometrium (EN) was analyzed with 15 tissue samples in each group. Samples were placed in a tube containing transport medium and transplanted into CAM of fertile chicken eggs for five days. Transplanted tissue was harvested, and histological preparations were made using the paraffin method. IHC staining was performed on p75, Ki67, TrkB, and BDNF staining. Invasion analysis and IHC evaluation were performed with a semi-quantitative method. Data were analyzed using IBM Ⓡ SPSS Statistics version 25.0. Statistical significance was accepted at P < 0.05. Results: Normal Endometrium expressed the highest expression of BDNF than peritoneal endometriosis and endometrioma (0.36± 0.38, 0.16± 0.13, 0.07± 0.07, P=0.007). The P75 expression correlated positively with Ki67 expression in PE and CC samples (P=0.012; P=0.008). Conclusion: The p75 receptor may have a role in endometriosis tissue proliferation, but this receptor does not directly influence tissue invasion into CAM. While proliferation in endometriomas positively correlates with invasion into CAM, it is not correlated with peritoneal endometriosis.

Obesity is a condition that is highly associated with chronic diseases. The number of obese individuals is increasing on a global scale every year. Energy intake that is imbalanced with energy expenditure causes the accumulation of excess fat. Regular exercise is part of a lifestyle that can reduce the risk of obesity by inducing adipose browning. One of the mechanisms of exercise in inducing browning is by modifying the gut microbiome profile. This profile may promote adipose browning by maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier, glucose homeostasis, regulating energy absorption, and appetite-regulating hormones. © 2022 Suryani et al.

Targeted therapy treatment in Colorectal Cancer (CRC) works specifically on a protein or target cell in cancer. It plays a role in the survival of cancer cells. Targeted therapy involves several monoclonal antibodies, one of which is cetuximab which targets the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR). However, there are cases of cetuximab resistance caused by activities of the Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1). TIMP-1 can activate the downstream EGFR signaling pathway, thereby that TIMP-1 activities need to be inhibited. Polysaccharide compounds in Pleurotus ostreatus have potential as an immunomodulator and anticancer. This study aimed to determine the potential interaction, types of bonds, the binding energy between the polysaccharide compounds Pleurotus ostreatus and TIMP-1, and survival assay of human adenocarcinoma colorectal (HT-29) cells. This research method compounds selection, data mining, compounds and proteins preparation, docking and visualization of docking results, and cell viability assay. To the study results, TIMP-1 interacted with α-glucan, β-glucan, and galactomannan, which were mediated by hydrophobic and hydrogen bonds. We found new two-point interaction of TIMP-1 with α-glucan and β-glucan on Glu156 and Lys157 that plays a role in the interaction with CD63. Therefore, TIMP-1 can be a candidate for a new ligand on colon cancer targeted therapy. Cetuximab and Pleurotus ostreatus Extract (POE) combinations inhibited the survival of HT-29 cells. The α-glucan and β-glucan may partially inhibit TIMP-1 so that the possibility of resistance due to the interaction of TIMP-1 with CD63 can be inhibited and polysaccharide from Pleurotus ostreatus has anticancer activity on HT-29 cells. © 2022 science Press.
