Study of stabilized soil clay soil characteristics using vulcanic ash and tailing as subgrade layers

Soft clay is soil that need microscopic to sub microscopic size originating from the chemical weathering of rock compilers. Clay soil is very hard in a dry state and is plastic at moderate water content. At higher water contents the clay soil is sticky (cohesive) and very soft. Soil stabilization is an effort to improve the quality of the soil by using certain materials to increase soil strength. Soil stabilization is the process of mixing soil with certain materials to improve the technical properties of the soil and is an attempt to change or improve the technical properties of the soil to meet certain technical requirements of the soil carrying capacity. This research is an experimental study to determine the carrying capacity of clay soil stability using volcanic ash deposits and tailings instead of cement. The research variables are volcanic ash deposits which is locked of 8% and tailings with the variation of 4%, 5%, 6% and ripening for 3 days, 7 days and 14 days. The benefits of this experimental study are expected to get the carrying capacity of the soil from stabilized soil greater than the carrying capacity of the original soil by the unconfined compression test (UCS).

Analysis of Flood Hydrograph to the Land Use Change on Flood Peak Discharge in the Sekanak Watershed

Land demands in urban areas are increasing with urbanization. To supply the urban land demand, various method are made including the over land function. The over land function if not properly planned will result in increased run-off in a watershed. The increased surface runoff will increase peak discharges and potentially cause flooding when capacity storages such as drainage and retention basins, as well as other low areas such as open areas and swamps are full. The effect of land use on peak discharge is a question that needs to be analyzed. The purpose of this study is to assess land use change and analyze peak flood discharge in the upstream of Sekanak watershed. The research methodology uses is spatial analysis that is doing DEM (Digital Elevation Model) analysis to determine river flow limit and determining of watershed characteristics and analysis of land use change in year 2004 and year 2014 influence to flood peak discharge in Sekanak watershed, due to rainfall factor. Peak discharge analysis was conducted with Nakayasu Synthetic Unit Hydrograpah. The result of this study is land use change increases the coefficient C value, causing the peak discharge in the 5 year return period to increase.

The Effect on the Compressive Strength of Concrete Produced by the Incorporation of Boiler-Calcined Biomass Ash into Sand from the Maule River, Chile

The pulp industry generates large amounts of wood biomass ash (WBA) as waste, which causes economic and environmental problems. However, WBA has pozzolanic and cementing properties that can complement cement in concrete production. Many studies have been published on the replacement of cement by WBA, but few discuss the replacement of other concrete components such as sand. The objective of this research is to determine the effect of volume replacement of sand with ash on the mechanical resistance of concrete. A reference concrete was made with a specified strength of 30 MPa at 28 days. Samples with 5%, 10%, 13%, 15% and 20% WBA were compared. A water-cement ratio of 0.49 was maintained, plasticizer was added to maintain an acceptable workability, and compression tests were conducted at 7, 28 and 63 days. The results indicate that WBA decreases the workability of the fresh concrete mixture. However, the compressive strength increases in most cases, thus demonstrating the possibility of using WBA as an addition to the concrete to improve its mechanical properties, and at the same time reduce the environmental impact of this waste material.

Indonesia's economic growth is growing along with the growth of the construction industry against increasing construction projects. The performance of a construction project requires serious management to achieve maximum results. Delays occur, quality is not in accordance with contract specifications, and costs that sometimes occur overbudget. Some studies show that the dominant factors causing overbudget in construction projects consist of: cost estimation factors, performance management factors, resource mobilization factors, control factors of timing performance, incomplete project information data, increasing material prices, and financial policies from government. In overcoming these dominant factors, project cost management is needed. Construction projects can be managed with project cost management. Project cost management includes the stages of planning, scheduling and controlling which are important steps to be taken to achieve the objective of project performance. Project cost management involves cost budgeting and cost control. Cost budgeting aims to generate a cost baseline to ensure project performance and project needs. A cost baseline is a time step from the budget used by the project manager to ensure and monitor costs. Cost control is used to monitor costs based on the cost baseline. Project control systems can be seen through project performance. Project performance can be done by comparing cost performance over time. Costs from the time period can be analyzed by variance analysis. Variance analysis involves actual project performance with planned performance. Value technique is used to analyze trend whether a performance is improving or deteriorating by comparing planned performance with actual performance. EVA (earned value analysis) is one of method using for project control. EVA method can be used to measure project performance which applied as a tool to integrate between cost and time aspect.

The population of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is growing and major cities are becoming increasingly crowded. Billions of dollars have been allocated to replace and maintain the existing infrastructure. This includes the installation, inspection, repair, and replacement of water supply, sewer, storm water, power, and telecommunication networks. Conventional open-trench methods to install new and rehabilitate existing utilities are expensive and lead to traffic disruption including road closures, traffic delays, detours resulting in noise and loss of access to homes and businesses, particularly in congested urban areas like Dubai and Abu Dhabi emirates. The UAE government is, therefore, looking at alternative methods for the installation, replacement, and maintenance of aging underground utilities. This paper will present the results of a questionnaire survey conducted among construction practitioners in the UAE representing municipalities, contractors, and design firms to elicit the current level of awareness of trenchless construction methods and their popularity as emerging technologies among construction practitioners across the country. Survey results provided an indication of the current and expected future trend in the application of trenchless technologies including the types currently employed. It also provided an idea on the percentage of projects that employed trenchless technologies or are willing to use these technologies in the future. A comparison of trenchless technology utilization now and in 2007 is also presented. The survey results revealed the current and potential future growth in utilizing trenchless methods and the expected average government expenditures for the construction of new utilities and the rehabilitation of existing ones. © Copyright© (2018) by American Society for engineering Management (ASEM). Characteristics of Flood Water Level Based on Hydrologic Soil Group Analysis in Temef Watershed

Temef Watershed is located in the Benanain River Basin with a catchment area of 551.50 km2. River characteristics in the Temef Watershed are influenced by three main river streams from upstream to downstream. Conventional collection of data on watershed characteristics requires a relatively long process and time. However, when based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the cost and time will be more efficient. The floodwater level is affected by the amount of rainwater runoff that occurs in the Temef Watershed. The amount of runoff depends on the level of soil permeability and land cover. To determine the level of soil permeability, hydrogeological maps are used. Based on this, a study of the characteristics of flood waters from GIS-based hydrogeology is needed. The analysis method used ArcGIS overlay on hydrogeological maps, while data on watershed characteristics used the Archydro and HEC-GeoHMS features. The results of the analysis showed a level 3 permeability type with limestone lithology, solid volcanic breccia, sandy marlene, conglomerate, and alluvium consisting of sand and gravel having moderate to high permeability. The metamorphic and basalt rocks have low to moderate permeability and the scaly clay has low to very low permeability. This condition causes runoff that turn into flood streams.

Simulation of the effect of floodway on Batang Kandis River flood control

Floods often occur in Padang City, mainly in the areas of Pasia Nan Tigo Village and Lubuk Buaya Village, caused by the overflow of Batang Kandis when heavy rains occur (intensity of rainfall >15mm/hours). To decrease the river overflow an artificial canal with 300 m long and 50 m wide (floodway) was constructed to bypassing the river flow from the Batang Kandis River to the ocean. In order to find out the effects of the floodway, four scenarios are performed the scenario 1 and 2 were the simulation condition of Batang Kandis River before and after the construction of floodway. While to increase the effectiveness of floodway, simulations 3 and 4 were carried out. Scenario 3 was the combination of floodway with normalization and embankment. To prevent the entry of seawater into the Batang Kandis River, because the floodway is affected by the tide of the sea, then 3-door motion weir was simulated namely scenario 4. Scenario 4 was the combination of floodway normalization, embankment, and a 3 door motion weir. From the simulations, we found that the floodway was effective to decrease the water surface level up to 15 m and 20 m during 10 years and 25 year return period of discharge respectively. From the scenario 3, we found that the embankment with 1.5 m and 2 m was effective to prevent overflow by 10-year and 25-year return period of discharge respectively. While for scenario 4 the water level rises 0.5 m due to motion weir So, that it is needed to extend the embankment with 0,5m high.

Indonesia currently is facing an energy crisis due to depletion of oil reserves and rapid growth in conventional energy consumption. The declining fossil energy potential especially oil and gas has encouraged the government to put new renewable energy (NRE) as the main priority to maintain energy security for national supply in the future. NRE in Indonesia is generated from bioenergy power, hydro power, solar power, tidal power, wind power, and potential. However, NRE utilization in Indonesia is only about 11% from the total potential. This study assesses the hydropower production capacity of Ayung River Basin, the biggest Basin in Province of Bali. The assessment is carried out by utilizing global data that can be easily accessed. It was found that there are several potential mini-hydropower locations around the Ayung River Basin, with the biggest potential is around 2 MW.

The development of road evaluation and monitoring system using database application

Road infrastructure is one of a nation’s strategic assets. It accommodates the basic human needs to move from one place to another place in order to fulfill their needs. In Furthermore, to keep its optimum service level, this infrastructure requires a routine maintenance. In the present study, road geometric data, road distress type, road distress gps coordinates and cost estimation are integrated into one road maintenance database application. By doing data integration, the user can easily analyze the pavement maintenance strategies, and eventually this system database will give good contribution towards decision making process to achieve reliable road maintenance system and sustainable pavement. The observed road pavements were Joko Tingkir, Monginsidi, Ir. Juanda and Kyai Mojo—all of these are under the authority of Public Works Agency of Surakarta City Government. Relevant data were acquired by conducting field observation. The web database application is developed as a standalone extension from previously android-based application called Road Evaluation And Monitoring System (REMS). GPS coordinates, PCI index value derived from the calculation of distress type, distress area or volume and its deduct value were generated from REMS application. Distress type and severity was used to determine the maintenance method. Bina Marga’s standardized unit price indices and each road distress volume or area were used as base calculation to obtain final work unit price. The estimated maintenance cost for Joko Tingkir road is Rp28,087,654.29, Monginsidi road is Rp46,784,249.87, Ir. Juanda road is Rp266,780,014.78 and Kyai Mojo road is Rp76,584,885.27. All of the calculation results are displayed on the web-based interactive map layer, graph and tables for each of the observed roads. The table of road distress, maintenance and treatment recommendation are also displayed for detailed analysis.

The Study Of Riverbed Change And Bed-load Transport In The Middle Segment Of The Batang Kuranji River

Batang Kuranji is one of the biggest river in Padang City with catchment area of 202,7 km2. In the middle segment of this river have degraded significantly, especially in the downstream side of Gunung Nago Dam after the big flash flood in 2012. This also supported by the steep river slope of 0.017 and the activity of excavation of sand and gravel downstream of Gunung Nago Dam. Based on this, the authors are interested in examining the study of riverbed change and bed-load transport in the middle segment of the Batang Kuranji River, to determine the amount of sediment and changes in riverbed elevations that occur and analyse the location of proper building to reduce water damage. In conducting this research, researchers collected primary data, namely direct sampling in the field and secondary data from various relevant literature sources. In this study seven methods of calculating bed-load transport were used, including Meyer Peter Muller, Einstein, Einstein-Brown, Kalinske, Frijlink, Engelund and Hansens, and Van Rijn. Based on the results, there was a change in riverbed elevation, in the period of 2011 to 2013 there was a scour volume of 902,527 m3 greater than the sediment volume of 193,435 m3 where the sediment occurred was only 21.43% with the deepest scour 10.52 m. Kalinske sediment transport method has the closest value to manual calculation. The comparison between Kalinske method and manual calculation respectively; 0.056 m3/day and 0.187 m3/day in S12 sample; 0.312 m3/day and 0.554 m3/day in S23 sample; and 0.020 m3/day and 0.081 m3/day in S33.
