Makassar City is one of the major cities in Indonesia with a population of approximately 1.7 million inhabitants, which continues to grow and followed the development of urban infrastructure facilities. The development also resulted in adverse effects on the environment, especially for water catchment area turns into a watertight region resulting changes in surface runoff were greater, especially in the rainy season because the drainage coefficient values are increasing as well. The purpose of this study was to analyze the capacity of the capacity of drainage channels in terms of technical aspects, analyze and formulate efforts to address flooding in a drainage channel system environmentally friendly in terms of environmental aspects, and Calculating the cost and benefit the development of the handling of flooding with a drainage channel system environmentally friendly in terms of financial aspects. The results obtained from the analysis of the technical aspects there are 14 of 41 channel capacity is insufficient accommodation capacity, resulting in the analysis of environmental aspects require 867 infiltration wells, and 3.19 rate of Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR).

The basement construction of Solo Mix-used Development (MD) with limited land located in the center of Surakarta city requires the construction of basement as a parking most of that construction is made with soil excavation. This soil excavation can affect the water table around the project. This research aimed to figure out the rate of decreasing of the water table. The research methods which used were a study of soil characteristic and observation of wells. The study of soil was done by investigating 2 zones consisting of 5 drill points with a depth of 60 m and 40 m. The observation of wells was conducted at 25 m and 125 m distance from main well pumped with a variation of discharge capacity. The results of the soil investigation indicate that the water table at the location of the project site is between -3.1 m∼-3.2 m depth. The results of the decrease of the water table at 25m distance and distance 125m are 0.89 m and 1.82 m respectively. The decrease of the water table occurred in the extreme at the discharge of 1.30 m3/sec with the decrease of 5.27 m which can get the residents’ wells dry. It is expected that there is further information about the rate of the water table, so that it could be figured out the decrease of water table outside the location of the basement.

The increasing of urban development and the decreasing of public awareness to environment promote flood every year for urban cities. Several lakes or ponds are sacrificed due to both urban development and landfilling. Bad habit of society to throw garbage to the lakes affects the society to think that the economic value of lakes could be increased by filling them with the land. These lead to make the lakes become vulnerable to sedimentation from urban activities. Universitas Indonesia as educational institution starts to develop how to manage sedimentation by hydrodynamics and sediment transport modelling. The research uses Resources Modelling Associates (RMA) program to run the model and Agathis Lake as the study area to perform the simulation. It is expected that the program output data could represent the field data, so the validation method should be conducted. The issue to validate the data would be problematic if simulation factors data could not accommodate real-world observed data. This study aims to employ Galerkin method to understand finite element method in Resources Modelling Associates program (RMA) in order to avoid black box when using it and to conduct a field study to perform calibration method of sediment transport modelling in the study area, Agathis Lake that is located in Universitas Indonesia.

Impact of freight transportation on road network performance in Surakarta with toll road scenario

The increase in traffic growth is in line with the increase in transportation demand. Moreover, the freight movement is very important to support the economic growth and business in urban area, especially in developing countries, including Indonesia. In addition to its beneficial impact, freight transportation can also cause a serious problem, such as congestion, air pollution, and infrastructure damage. Such problems can be anticipated by good transportation planning. Studies related to freight transportation planning and modelling in Indonesia are very few hence we are interested in doing research about the impact of freight transportation on the road network performance in Surakarta with toll road scenario. One of the important aspect to predict the impact of freight transportation for the future planning is the trip distribution represented by Origin-Destination (OD) matrix. The purpose of this study was to examine the value of β as a parameter of gravity models and to evaluate the impact of freight transportation with toll road scenario in 2025. The result shows that the value of parameter β is 0.081. Road network performance as indicated by traffic volume per capacity (V/C) more than 1 without any scenario and with scenario in toll road is 18.8719% and 10.468%, respectively. It means that toll roads have significant contribution in reducing congestion level.

The Amazon Basin in the Context of Shared Management of Transboundary Water Resources

The present study addresses the issue of shared management of transboundary water resources, using the Amazon river basin as a case study. To evaluate risks, two scenarios (current and future) were simulated using the methodology proposed by the Transboundary Waters Assessment programme River Basins. The results obtained allowed the inference that the Amazon Basin, considering all indicators, is in the “moderate” category of risk within the current scenario. In turn, when only the “governance” indicator is considered, reflected through projected water politics tensions, the risk category for the basin becomes “high”, both in the current and future scenarios (2030 and 2050). In conclusion, it is recommended that states should establish clear priorities and rules for water resource monitoring, use and supervision.

In an irrigation system, one of the important activities in addition to maintenance is irrigation operations. The indicators of successful irrigation operations are the increased water use efficiency, the increased cropping intensity, the declined water-sharing conflicts, the increased agricultural production, and the decreased crop dryness. This research was conducted to know the success of irrigation operation in an irrigation area, which is Dimoro Irrigation Area at Karanganyar Regency. Data were taken from 2013 to 2016. The analysis was based on the AHP weighting, ranking scale and Permen PU No. 32/2007 to determine the performance condition of irrigation operations. The results of the performance of Dimoro Irrigation operations in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 were 74.38%, 81.96%, 90.12%, and 100%, respectively. It can be concluded that the performance of irrigation operations showed an increasing trend that indicates the success of irrigation operation in Dimoro Irrigation Area.

An Evaluation of the Success Rate of Sermo Dam Management in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta

In dam operating and maintaining activities, there are some activities becoming the main function: the assessment of dam condition to keep monitoring and safeguarding the condition of dam as the main building. To achieve the maximum service, the maximal dam management is required as well and it should be followed with management evaluation. This case study was taken place in Sermo Dam of Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta during 2015 - 2017. The method applied in this study was descriptive quantitative one, conducting a research using primary and secondary data. In this research, the assessment of dam condition was viewed from 1 (one) component, dam body, so that the component weight was 100%. The value of dam body condition was obtained from data of Sermo Dam monitoring in 2015-2016 and from the result of field survey in 2017. The result of research showed that the condition values of Sermo Dam with dam body component were 92.66% in 2015, 92.99% in 2016, and 93.99% in 2017. The result also showed that the value of dam body condition tended to increase during 2015-2017. To maintain the condition, the maximal operation and maintenance of dam was recommended.

The energy storage and fossil-backup (fossil-hybridization) systems of a concentrating solar power plant (CSP) provide a continuous production of energy all over the year and satisfy the grid demand even when the sun is not shining. One could ask about the behavior of the energy production, or the levelized energy cost, as a function of the energy storage and of the fossil-hybridization in such plants. This paper tries to answer this question. For this task, there have been performed numerous simulations on a central receiver plant with a fixed nominal power, varying the storage capacity and the level of hybridization. The results showed that these variables impact differently. For the thermal storage, from capacities ranging from 0h to 24h, there is a specific intermediary capacity, 15h, in which the levelized energy cost is minimum. But for the fossil-hybridization, this energy cost always decreases with the increment of the hybrid level. The results also showed that, if a given energy production is supported by a certain level of hybridization, its energy cost would be less than that supported by a storage system. This is due to the relatively high investment costs related to the storage system, and the relatively low cost of fuel.

The flipped classroom approach has gained increasing popularity in higher education, particularly in STEM fields. In flipped learning, part or all of direct instruction is delivered through online videos and other media, and the class time is used for engaging students in collaborative, hands-on activities. In order to utilize the benefits of this novel teaching approach, a junior-level, introduction to transportation engineering course was converted into a flipped format. This study, conducted in a major Midwestern university, will present the results of a mixed-method evaluation investigating the effectiveness of the flipped classroom approach. Quantitative data included a pre-course survey, a post-course survey. Qualitative data, on the other hand, included video recordings of in-class sessions and end-of-semester focus group interviews. Analysis of the results indicated students benefited from the flipped classroom approach although it entailed some challenges for both faculty and students. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made for engineering education researchers and practitioners. © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.

Applicability of zirconium loaded okara in the removal and recovery of phosphorus from municipal wastewater

Recently, there is a new trend to consider wastewater as a precious resource. Since phosphorus is a limited non-renewable element, and MAP (Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate - MgNH4PO4.6H2O) is a valuable slow-release fertilizer, the recovery of phosphorous as MAP has received special attention from scientists all over the world. However, the application of this process with municipal wastewater is still a challenge, due to low concentration of phosphorus and high volume of municipal wastewater. This study investigates the potential of reclaiming MAP from municipal wastewater by combination of adsorption and crystallization. Soybean milk residue (okara) was loaded with Zirconium (Zr) to prepare the adsorbent (ZLO). Adsorption and desorption experiments were conducted in a semi-pilot scale ZLO packed colum system. Effects of P: N: Mg molar ratios, chemical sources and temperature on the formation of MAP were examined in an attempt to identify the optimal crystallization conditions. The attained precipitate was characterized using XRD, SEM, FTIR techniques. It was found that the ZLO packed column adsorption-desorption system could pre-concentrate phosphorus from municipal wastewater up to 28.36 times, fitting well the minimum requirement (50 mg P/L) for the economical MAP recovery. Up to 95.19% of dissolved phosphorus in desorption solution was recovered at pH = 9, Mg: N: P molar ratio = 2:2:1, using a combination of MgCl2.6H2O and NH4Cl. The harvested MAP exhibited high purity (92.59%), high P-availability (89% by mass), and extremely low levels of heavy metals. The results prove that it is viable to recover MAP from municipal wastewater by employing ZLO as adsorbent, followed by crystallization. This paves the way for mining phosphorus from municipal wastewater and reducing okara as an agricultural byproduct in a green way.
