Towards Sustainable Infrastructure with Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites: A Symposium Honoring Khaled Soudki at the ACI Fall 2014 Convention and ACI Spring 2015

This paper presents the results of tests done on concrete beams reinforced with glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) longitudinal bars and GFRP stirrups. The main test variables were the size, the amount, and the arrangement of longitudinal reinforcement as well as the size and spacing of closed loop stirrups. Six beams are divided into two series defined by stirrup spacing, or three pairs defined by longitudinal bar arrangement. The results indicate that the specimens with no stirrups failed in shear-tension while the beams with stirrups failed in shear-compression showing deep beam behaviour. The results were compared to predictions from several methods, namely a novel Indeterminate Strut-and-Tie (1ST) method formulated specifically for use with brittle reinforcements, as well as the shear models of the ACI 440.1R-06 guidelines, the CSA S806-12 standard, and theNehdi et al. (2007) method. The 1ST method produced the best predictions followed by the method of Nehdi et al. Most of tensile tests by researchers were inconclusive, due to differentiation in results and variation in testing methods. The available test methods provide only a limited amount of information on this tensile behavior, producing the proper load-displacement response. The most common testing method is the Brazilian splitting test according to ASTM C496. In the numerical model the question as whether the case of splitting test should be considered as a plane-stress or plane-strain phenomena, has surfaced. A finite element model to produce a more sophisticated explanation of the concrete behavior in tension, is constructed. The experimental tests were performed to validate the developed program based on the load-displacement curves. The developed program also resulted the stress distribution of cylinder splitting test.

Over the years, the failure envelope of plain concrete has been studied and constructed by various researchers. Since concrete is a non-homogeneous material, its behavior under bi-axial stresses is not as straight forward as steel. Also, the assumption that concrete exhibits an isotropic behavior under loading is not completely true since the failure mode due to tension and compression differs significantly. This research work looked into the correctness of the two most known failure criteria; the Mӧhr-Coulomb (MC) and the Kupfer-Hilsdorf-Rusch (KHR) envelope. In reaching the goal, a Finite Element Model (FEM) was constructed, and a plain concrete beam subjected to flexure was run through the program for a range of concrete compressions strengths. To validate the FEM program, the resulting load-displacement curves were calibrated to experimentally tested specimens. The load-displacement response and the stress-strain behavior at the beam’s center-line up till failure, was recorded for analyze purposes. This research work was conducted at the Structural and Material Laboratory, Diponegoro University in Semarang, Indonesia.

A Comparison of Shear Strength of Box-section Beam Made of Sliced-laminated Dendrocalamus Asper Under Torsion and Transversal Load

This study was purposed to compare shear strength of box-section beams based on torsion test, and shear strength based on four point bending test. Eight beams for torsion test and nine beams for four point bending test of laminated Dendrocalamus Asper (Petung bamboo) bonded with 268 g/m 2 of urea formaldehyde were made for this research. The beams were engineered using cool-pressed by 2,0 MPa for 4 hours. The sizes of square-section of the beams are 80 mm, 120 mm, and 160 mm with 15 mm, 20 mm, and 25 mm thick. Based on the torsion test, the research showed that the maximum shear stress was in the range of 4.39 MPa to 10.13 MPa with an average of 6.50 MPa. Shear modulus of the beam was in the range of 690.68 MPa to 1,072.28 MPa with the average of 902.10 MPa. Using four point bending test, the research results showed that the maximum shear stress was in the range of 2.86 MPa to 4.85 MPa with the average of 4.06 MPa. Modulus of elasticity of the beam was in the range of 11,363.37 MPa to 15,739.23 MPa with the average of 13,502.30 MPa. The maximum shear stress based on the torsion test was significantly differed to the maximum shear stress based on the four point bending test.

Study the Effect of Adding Nano Fly Ash and Nano Lime to Compressive Strength of Mortar

This research is aimed to investigating the possibility of substituting cement with fly ash. Fly ash is a waste product of the coal burning process. Previous studies showed that the substitution of 20% - 40% in cement weight by fly ash increases the 60 days compressive strength of mortar. Fly ash contributes to the compressive strength because the content of silica oxide reacts with the free lime to enhance the cement hydration process while on the other hand provides a better density by acting as filler. Besides looking into the increases of fly ash percentage below the 20%, the influence of addition ofactive lime is also studied. The content of silica oxide will react with the free lime hydration products of cement and active lime added. In this study, applying the nano-technology to modify the size of the fly ash and lime in conducted. The procedure will result in nano-fly ash andnano-lime particles. The cement-to-nanofly ash ratio is 1:12.24 and nano lime-to-nano fly ash ratio is 1:1.11. This research includes the study of the effect of nano fly ash and lime percentage in the mortar, ranges from 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10%, 12.5% to 15% to the control specimen. Cement-to-sand proportion is 1 to 1.70 with water-cement-ratio 0.49. 50 × 50 × 50 mm specimens are tested to obtain their compression strength at the age of 7 days.

Due to the complexity of contemporary practice, top-tier structural engineering firms hold the master's degree as the minimum level of education for new hires. In addition, the American Society of civil Engineers (ASCE) recommends a master's degree or the equivalent of 30 credits beyond a bachelor's degree as part of the minimum body of knowledge for licensed professional engineers. Finally, students whose end goal is a career in professional practice have indicated a preference for graduate programs focused on design knowledge essential for the advancement of structural engineering practice. These needs provided the opportunity for the creation of a new professional master's program in structural engineering at Lehigh University. Launched in summer 2008, the program is led by a full-time professor of practice with industry design experience and guided by an executive advisory board, composed of representatives from all areas of the building design and construction profession. The hallmark of the 30-credit, 10-month program is a 9-credit, 3-course design project sequence in which student teams design a real-world structure from initial concept to final construction documents. An individual project assignment, as well as technical elective courses, allows students to tailor the program to their unique interests and career goals. A laboratory class provides hands-on learning of structural behavior. Interaction with industry leaders through seminars, field trips, and externships provides students ample opportunity to network with professionals and gain an understanding of their chosen industry. The disregard for pedestrians' quality of life on streets is noticeable, in such a way that they are constantly exposed to excessive levels of noise, at bus stops, on a walk, or in sidewalks. Seeking to identify areas with noise conflicts for pedestrians in a Brazilian medium sized city, situated in the state of Sao Paulo, this research verifies noise levels in an urban road network. For this identification, a study area was selected according to its diversity on land use and occupation, as well as to the variety of patterns in building heights. Forty-eight points on urban streets, positioned in the middle of the street blocks, were taken as references for the registration of acoustical data and data of traffic flow. This field campaign took place on weekdays (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and at peak hours of vehicular traffic flow. All data were entered into a Geographic Information System (GIS). By exploring the potentiality and tools of the software, the urban noise was characterized along the streets of the study area. An analysis of its spatial distribution was undertaken and the results indicated that there are many points in this area that are above the comfort conditions established by technical standards. Furthermore, it was possible to verify differences on noise levels according to the street slope. © European Acoustics Association.

The 27th May 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake caused more than 5500 casualties and hundreds of thousands of non-engineered buildings collapsed. It is necessary to investigate the seismic intensity, ground acceleration and building damage index. Direct site investigations to collect the severity distribution of objects, humans and environments have been done. The result of the investigation shows that in general isoseismic lines are in-line with Opak fault, the proposed attenuation relationship for seismic intensity and horizontal ground accelerations are matching well with previous research results and the distribution of the building damage index has a similar pattern with isoseismic lines. © 2011 WIT Press.

Karst systems are common in Brazilian semi-arid, including parts of the São Francisco River watershed. Although complex, these systems are important components of regional hydrology and relevant sources of water supply, given the intermittent characteristic of surface water in the semi-arid. In this context, it is necessary to understand the aquifer behavior and responses to the natural and man made stresses, so that long term, sustainable, water planning and management can be devised. This paper investigates the precipitation, surface flows and piezometric head data with time series analysis to better understand the hydrodynamic behavior and hydraulic properties of the Bambuí Karst aquifer. Results based on autocorrelation and cross-correlation are used to provide insight into the aquifer's degree of karstification, memory and storage capacity. A group of wells were monitored with automatic data loggers for water level and flow during an 8 month period in 15 minute intervals. General results indicate a better developed karst system in the lower watershed, closer to the São Francisco River and in locations with limestone outcrops, while upper watershed portions (with presence of sandstone) indicate slower flux, higher groundwater storage and less karst development. Aquifer head response to precipitation events is relatively fast, in the order of a week, with faster responses detected in areas with limestone outcrops, reflecting the presence of larger conduits. Conclusions will contribute to the elaboration of a conceptual flow model for the Bambuí karstic aquifer and regional conjunctive water resources planning. © 2011 ASCE.
