The implementation of titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a photocatalyst material in hydrogen (H2) evolution reaction (HER) has embarked renewed interest in the past decade. Rapid electron-hole pairs recombination and wide band gap of a photo-sensitive material of TiO2 are detrimental toward the targeted catalytical reaction. In this study, we present the rational design, fabrication, photocatalytic performance of TiO2-Cu/CuO/Cu2O heterostructures (CuTi) using viable chemical reduction method. The Z-scheme and S-scheme are succesfully generated across the TiO2/CuO/Cu2O interfaces, while the Schottky junction arises on the Cu perimeters. This is evidenced from the blue shifted about 0.3 eV of Cu 2p core level determined by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), in combination with the formation of inverse V-shape of the Mott-Schottky plots. In addition, we find that Cu/CuO/Cu2O facilitates photon absorption range up to the visible region. The multiple heterojunction and the large number of OHsurface enhanced charge carrier transfer are associated to the suppression of photoluminescence (PL) intensity, high surface hydroxyl (OHsurface) density in CuTi probed by XPS, and fast electron transfer based on the electrochemical measurements. The presence of OHsurface inhibits the recombination of electron. A significant H2 photogeneration rate enhancement is achieved when an optimized 5 wt% Cu/CuO/Cu2O concentration is used on TiO2 to achieve 7,157.19 μmol·g−1 (1,789.30 μmol·g−1·h−1). Based on this finding, zero emission energy innitiative could be materialized under multiple heterojunctions in photocatalytic process is beneficial for enhancing the H2 production. © 2025 The Authors

Identifying Patterns in Dental Visit Attendance Among Pregnant Women: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Introduction: Understanding the factors influencing dental care utilization is crucial for enhancing treatment adherence and outcomes. This study evaluates dental care–seeking patterns among pregnant women in low-income community. Methods: The authors analyzed data from 311 pregnant patients and 1,111 visits (2019–2022) synchronized from dental and medical records. The primary outcome was showing up for scheduled dental visits. To identify visit-attending patterns, the authors used a model-based clustering method to cluster longitudinal data with categorical outcomes. A penalized generalized linear mixed-effects model was applied to identify relevant variables for the visit attendance trajectories within each cluster. Results: The study participants comprised 49.6% Black, 32.2% White, and 12.5% Hispanic women. The majority (89.07%) were holding Medicaid insurance. Among the 1,111 scheduled visits, 432 resulted in no-shows (38.8%), including failed and canceled appointments. The authors identified 3 distinct clusters of visit-attending patterns on the basis of their show-up rates: low demand/low appointment risk (85% attendance), high demand/high appointment risk (57% attendance despite multiple scheduled visits), and moderate demand/high appointment risk (55% attendance with fewer scheduled visits). Various determinants, such as race;age;inner-city residence;appointment timing;the COVID-19 era;type of scheduled dental treatment;and prior medical visits for conditions such as anxiety, depression, hypertension, and allergies, influenced the visit-attending behaviors within each patient group. Conclusions: The innovative clustering approach of this study successfully identified dental care–seeking patterns among pregnant women, suggesting its applicability to a broader demographic. Identifying potential modifiable factors that could enhance attendance at dental visits is essential for improving oral healthcare outcomes among underserved pregnant patients. © 2025 The Au

With the advance of network technology in recent years, the dissemination and exchange of massive documents has become commonplace. Accordingly, the importance of content analysis techniques is increasing. Topic analysis in large-scale document streams such as E-mails and news articles is an important research issue. This paper addresses techniques for "topic activation analysis" for document streams. For example, when news articles with a strong relationship to a given topic arrive frequently in a news stream, we can regard the activation level of the topic as high. In [I], Kleinberg proposed a method for analyzing document streams. Although the main objective of his method was to detect bursts of topics, it can also be used for topic activation analysis. His method, however, has a serious limitation in that it only looks at the arrival rate of documents and ignores the degree of relevance for each document. Another limitation is that his method is "batch-oriented." This paper first proposes a novel topic activation analysis scheme that incorporates both document arrival rate and relevance to address the first problem. It then presents an incremental scheme more appropriate for a document streaming environment. The proposed schemes are validated by experiments using real CNN news articles. Copyright 2005 ACM.

Volvox cells normally construct a spherical colony of hundred of cells and moving together to perform their basic needs. More than moving a single colony, two attached volvox colonies can 'dance' and move together. This system can be modeled as a two-body system, where its center of mass (COM) is performing simple translational (TRAN) motion, while the two colonies center is rotating around the COM with roll (ROLL) or spin (SPIN) motions. From the available observation video, about 10 s or 325 frames can be isolatedfor Sobel edge detection to get a clear picture of the dancing motion of two volvox colonies. It has been observed that the dancing volvox has a superposition motion of the other motion (TRAN, ROLL, SPIN), which has been compared qualitatively with the simple mechanics model of the two-body system. From the model, the translational velocityis about 1.25 m/s, and its roll and spin angular velocity are about 0.785 and 3.063 rad/s, respectively. The results of the study concluded that the mode of motion of the two Volvox colonies was a combination of spin and translational motion. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Approximately 500-60,000 volvox cells constructed a colony with a spherical or elliptical hollow form. Each cell can use its flagella to move. For a colony of hundred cells to perform a direct motion, there must be a coordination of the flagella. In this work, we assume that the cells already form the spherical colony and can perform some simple motion types, i.e., translational (TRAN), roll (ROLL), spin (SPIN), and superposition of the motions, and neglect detail of each flagellum. It is possible to map each cell in the colony using angular positions with a constant radius R and different θ _i and φ_i, where i = 1, 2,..., N with N is the number of cells constructing a colony. The center of the colony is R = (x, y, z). The TRAN mode can be obtained, wherex(t) = x(0) + vxt, y(t) = y(0) + vyt, z(t) = z(0) +vzt, ROLLmode with θ(t) = ω(0) + ωθt and SPIN with φ(t) = ω(0) + ωφt. Through the available observation video, the model of volvox colony motion is also shown to have a qualitative agreement. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In this paper, we describe the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) implementation of our City-LES code on detailed large eddy simulations, including the multi-physical phenomena on fluid dynamics, heat absorption and reflection by surface and building materials, cloud effects, and even sunlight effect. Because a detailed simulation involving these phenomena is required for analyses at the street level and several meters of resolution, the computation amount is enormous, and ordinary CPU computation cannot provide sufficient performance. Therefore, we implemented the entire code on GPU clusters with large-scale computing. We applied OpenACC coding to incrementally implement relatively easy programming and eliminate data transfers between the CPU and GPU memories. Based on this research, we determined that the elimination of data transfers is effective, even in the case where a part of the code execution on the GPU is slower than the CPU, owing to the absence of spatial parallelism. The objective of this study is to perform a complete climate simulation on a few square-kilometers field around the Tokyo Station, considering the finest resolution of the original highlighted area of the Marathon race in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. We successfully transferred the entire code to the GPU to provide approximately eight times the performance of CPU-only computation on multi-GPU per node with a large scale cluster. © 2022, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

In the high-performance computing domain, Field programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is a novel accelerator that exhibits high flexibility and performance characteristics distinct from other accelerators such as the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). Recent advanced high-end FPGA is equipped with multiple channels of high speed optical link up to 100Gbps performance for each. This is a crucial feature when we construct PC clusters with FPGAs as accelerators, however it is not easy to utilize from user kernels because this feature is implemented in low level and simple direct communication between neighboring FPGAs. In order to provide the communication feature between FPGAs for accelerated PC clusters, we developed a communication system named CIRCUS which implies a user-friendly API from OpenCL and is equipped with routing function over multi-hop communication on multi-dimensional torus network of FPGAs. However, current CIRCUS only provides a point-to-point communication between source and destination FPGAs. In ordinary parallel processing environment such as MPI, the user program the message passing with various collective communication functions for parallel algorithm, for instance Allreduce, Allgather, etc. In this paper, we implement the collective communication function over CIRCUS for user-friendly programming of ordinary parallel algorithms on FPGAs. As the first target, we implement Allreduce function which is the most essential and important function. The paper describes the CIRCUS system briefly followed by the design, implementation and preliminary performance evaluation on Intel Stratix10 FPGAs. © 2023 ACM.

Being increasingly dense and mature in layout, Internet has become an infrastructure for a state. The traditional single server can no longer bear the network traffic in rapid growth. For example, once the booking service for concert tickets is made available to the public, we are always prompted when clicking into the booking system that the server is busy. And when the system is finally restored normal, the tickets have been sold out. The load issue puzzling the ticket system also occurs in the transportation section every time when a long holiday is coming. Even though the system is updated on a yearly basis, net- work congestion still happens frequently. Therefore, there is still great space for the development of the ways and mechanisms of load balance in traditional multi-servers. Evaluation of the mech- anism and efficacy of load balance through P4Switch is proposed in this paper in the hope to achieve more efficient server load balance. © 2019 IEEE.

Document clustering has been used as a core technique in managing vast amount of data and providing needed information. In on-line environments, generally new information gains more interests than old one. Traditional clustering focuses on grouping similar documents into clusters by treating each document with equal weight. We proposed a novelty-based incremental clustering method for on-line documents that has biases on recent documents. In the clustering method, the notion of 'novelty' is incorporated into a similarity function and a clustering method, a variant of the K-means method, is proposed. We examine the efficiency and behaviors of the method by experiments. © 2006 IEEE.

Good emergency management is essential in planning events that have the potential to endanger lives, one of which is preparing for an effective and efficient evacuation. Evacuation evaluation using a fire drill is not optimal because it does not describe the emergency. Therefore, agent-based modeling is carried out to see interactions between individuals and their environment during evacuation. ABM (Agent-Based Modeling) is combined with a social-force model, which is the source of the agent's movement style toward goals and avoiding obstacles. The simulation is carried out using NetLogo 6.3.0 software, which can represent agents spread across a 2-dimensional room with variations in room size, exits, and the number of agents involved. Several characteristics are given to the agent to cause heterogeneity, including age categories in the form of children, adults, people over 70, and people with disabilities, which will determine the agent's walking speed. The measurements observed were the average duration of evacuation and the average speed of agents. From the simulation results, it can be concluded that using the social force model will lead to the emergence of collective behavior, such as clogging and arching in agents. The exact population density in different room areas will affect the evacuation duration, whereas a larger room area will cause the agent to travel a greater distance to the exit. An increase in evacuation duration will accelerate rapidly at low densities and slow down as density increases. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
