In the measurements of low birth weight infants, some non-body-worn electrodes or sensors are preferred because their attachment can lead to sudden change in the condition of the infants. The authors of this paper measured and compared the capacitive electrocardiogram signals from a mock-up infant model with a low birth weight through a cotton towel using a sheeting electrode with a driven shield and an old and a new type of analog front ends (AFEs). By reducing the total gain of the measurement system from 40 to 20 dB and replacing the earlier AFE with a new one, ECG waveforms that involved P, R, and T waves were observed from the 1600-g mock-up model. Repetitive R waves were also observed from the 700-g mock-up model under the same system.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach to locate and detect moving pedestrians in a video. Our proposed method first locates the region of interest (ROI) using a background subtraction algorithm based on guided filtering. This novel background subtraction algorithm allows our method to also filter unexpected noises at the same time, which could benefit the performance of our proposed method. Subsequently, the pedestrians are detected using YOLOv3 within the provided ROI. Our experiments showed that the proposed method has a competitive performance in the CDNET2014 dataset with a fast-processing time. © 2021 IEEE.

This research offers an alternative for health workers to monitor the rehabilitation of a patient's Range of Motion (ROM) without using a goniometer instrument and attaching various sensors to the patient's body, based on a detection system using the MediaPipe library. The developed detection system measures angles concerning the patient's body ROM patterns. The algorithm in the MediaPipe library helps to produce line graphs of landmark pose which are then processed using the trigonometric gradient equation so that it can have to measure angles from ROM. The angle of ROM measured includes Flexion-Extension and Abduction-Adduction movements of the arms, legs, and body. The results of testing the detection system between the goniometer measurements and the detection results differ from the Right Arm Elbow Flexion-Extension movement to the Trunk Flexion-Extension movement having an angle difference. The most significant angle difference is in the Right Arm Elbow Abduction - Adduction movement of 9.1388°, and the minor difference is in the Right Leg Hip Abduction - Adduction movement of 2.15°. The most significant overall system error is in the Left Arm Elbow Flexion - Extension movement, with a general system error of 27%. The minor system error in Left Arm Elbow Abduction - Adduction movement is 11 %.

Background: To evaluate the effect of the weighting of input imaging combo and ADC threshold on the performance of the U-Net and to find an optimized input imaging combo and ADC threshold in segmenting acute ischemic stroke (AIS) lesion. Methods: This study retrospectively enrolled a total of 212 patients having AIS. Four combos, including ADC-ADC-ADC (AAA), DWI-ADC-ADC (DAA), DWI-DWI-ADC (DDA), and DWI-DWI-DWI (DDD), were used as input images, respectively. Three ADC thresholds including 0.6, 0.8 and 1.8 × 10^–3 mm²/s were applied. Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) was used to evaluate the segmentation performance of U-Nets. Nonparametric Kruskal–Wallis test with Tukey–Kramer post-hoc tests were used for comparison. A p <.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The DSC significantly varied among different combos of images and different ADC thresholds. Hybrid U-Nets outperformed uniform U-Nets at ADC thresholds of 0.6 × 10^–3 mm²/s and 0.8 × 10^–3 mm²/s (p <.001). The U-Net with imaging combo of DDD had segmentation performance similar to hybrid U-Nets at an ADC threshold of 1.8 × 10^–3 mm²/s (p =.062 to 1). The U-Net using the imaging combo of DAA at the ADC threshold of 0.6 × 10^–3 mm²/s achieved the highest DSC in the segmentation of AIS lesion. Conclusions: The segmentation performance of U-Net for AIS varies among the input imaging combos and ADC thresholds. The U-Net is optimized by choosing the imaging combo of DAA at an ADC threshold of 0.6 × 10^–3 mm²/s in segmentating AIS lesion with highest DSC. ECG heart-beat classification using multimodal image fusion

In this paper, we present a novel Image Fusion Model (IFM) for ECG heart-beat classification to overcome the weaknesses of existing machine learning techniques that rely either on manual feature extraction or direct utilization of 1D raw ECG signal. At the input of IFM, we first convert the heart-beats of ECG into three different images using Gramian Angular Field (GAF), Recurrence Plot (RP) and Markov Transition Field (MTF) and then fuse these images to create a single imaging modality. We use AlexNet for feature extraction and classification and thus employ end-to-end deep learning. We perform experiments on PhysioNet's MIT-BIH dataset for five different arrhythmias in accordance with the AAMI EC57 standard and on PTB diagnostics dataset for myocardial infarction (MI) classification. We achieved an state-of-an-art results in terms of prediction accuracy, precision and recall. © 2021, CC BY.

This research is a study on how to improve the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) into a multi-function VSG for DG-based VSG. It can be operated in multiple modes by simply switching switches in a proposed block control for islanded mode, grid-connected mode, pre-parallel mode, pre-synchronization mode, and STATCOM mode automatically. Block control and flow chart of multi-function algorithm are proposed. Simulation results are presented to validate the control strategy.

This paper describes an experimental study of SARS-CoV-2 detection using plasmonic gold nanoparticles, which overcomes the limitations of traditional detection techniques known for their time-consuming and a tendency to produce high false negative results. The transmission spectrum of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was recently estimated to be in filter-free wavelength sensors as a miniaturization detection system. Additionally, we demonstrate that wide-ranging absorption will manifest within the visible spectrum when the virus is partially coated with gold nanoparticles at a particular percentage of coverage. This extensive absorption can be harnessed to direct the advancement of a reliable and precise colorimetric plasmon sensor for the detection of COVID-19. The transmission value resulting from the gold nano seed is around 507–540 nm. In addition, plasmonic gold nanoparticles can detect SARS-CoV-2 well from the range of 100-1,000 ng/ml. We expect a miniaturization biosensor system with qualitative diagnosis to be realized by the development method.

For plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) using grid power to fulfill the battery, on-board battery chargers are considered by combining hardware operation of charger system and drive system (converters and motors) without additional volume, weight, and cost. More operation features (the active and reactive power) on the on-board battery chargers should support into PEV users and the utility grid. This paper presents a novel configuration of an on-board battery charger for PEVs consist of a nine-switch converter and an open-end winding ac motor. A control strategy is also presented for this on-board battery charger. At the same time, it can control the active power and the reactive power from a PEV user and the utility grid, respectively. Moreover, the bidirectional power flow can operate on either charging mode, driving mode, or supply to the utility grid with galvanic isolation. Only the offline charging mode is presented. To verify the performance of the on-board battery charger, the simulation results are provided.

The electric energy produced by photovoltaic systems is a function of several variables that present random behavior, such as solar irradiance, ambient temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity. Several models describe the energy produced by these systems, which reflect the various factors that influence the generation and how significant these influences are. In this way, the present work aims to compare some panel temperature models and the electrical energy produced from a photovoltaic system located in the Midwest of Brazil. The applied methodology aims to evaluate the expected averages and standard deviations of the monthly synthetic series of generated energy to identify the main random variables that influence the electric generation. The results indicate the model that best describes the physical system concerning the randomness of the variables involved, the photovoltaic technology, the location, and the measurement period. © 2021, European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ). Impact of CLAHE-based image enhancement for diabetic retinopathy classification through deep learning

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a type of diabetes mellitus that attacks the retina of the eye. DR will cause patients to experience blindness slowly. Generally, DR can be detected by using a special instrument called an ophthalmoscope to view the inside of the eyeball. However, in conditions where there is a very small difference between the normal image and the DR image, computer-based assistance is needed for maximizing image reading value. In this research, a method of image quality improvement will be carried out which will then be integrated with a classification algorithm based on deep learning. The results of image improvement using Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) shows that the average accuracy of the method on several models is very competitive, 91% for the VGG16 model, 95% for InceptionV3, and 97% for EfficientNet compared to the results original image which only has an accuracy of 87% for VGG16 model, 90% for InceptionV3 model, and 95% for EfficientNet. However, in ResNet34 better accuracy is obtained in the original image with an accuracy of 95% while in the CLAHE image the accuracy value is only 84%. The results of this comprehensive evaluation and recommendation of famous backbone networks can be useful in the computer-aided diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy.
