Attending to Unbuilding The One Tree Project

This interdisciplinary design studio organized itself around the razing of an historic oak allee at Washington University in St. Louis, and used the imminent removal of forty-three 100-year-old oaks as a catalyst for project-based investigations into the greater cultural meaning of trees-and their loss. The One Tree Project took the territory of the tree as its classroom, with the oaks serving as site, subject, and platform for public research. Pedagogically, this project identifies attention and unbuilding as fundamental design competencies, and worked with a single tree-in our durational research and ritual felling-as a tool to participate in this transformation.

A multidecadal change analysis for irrigation ponds in Taoyuan, Taiwan, using multisource data

A multidecadal change analysis of the irrigation ponds in Taoyuan, Taiwan, was conducted by using multisource data including digitized ancient maps, declassified single-band CORONA satellite images, and multispectral SPOT images. Ponds and paddy fields are texturally similar but spectrally different, whereas the paddy fields and built-up are texturally different but spectrally similar. In this study, supervised land-use/land-cover classifications were conducted using four textural features derived from the single-band CORONA images and spectral features derived from SPOT images. Post-classification analysis revealed that the number of irrigation ponds in the study area decreased during the post-World War II farmland consolidation period (1945-1965) and the subsequent industrialization period (1970-2000). However, efforts on restoration of irrigation ponds in recent years have resulted in gradual increases in the number (9%) and total area (12%) of irrigation ponds in the study area.

Textile wastewater bioremediation using immobilized Chlorella sp. Wu-G23 with continuous culture

Immobilized microalga Chlorella sp. Wu-G23 (G23) was entrapped inside a polymer matrix or appended on the surface of a strong solid carrier. Alginates then formed a microalgae/polymeric matrix granule within the cross-linking solution. The textile wastewater bioremediation technology using immobilized G23 in textile wastewater effectively removed chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) and color after 7 days of cultivation. Batch model results show that the optimal cultivation parameters for simultaneously removing textile wastewater pollutants and accumulating lipids were initial pH 10 with extra urea 1 g/L and K2HPO4 8 mg/L added without aeration. A bioreactor cultivated the immobilized G23 at hydraulic retention time of 48 h with continuously fed textile wastewater for 440 h. Peak removal efficiencies of NH4+-N 80.2%, COD 70.8% and color 77.9% with fatty acid methyl esters 10% were achieved. The color removal occurred through the biosorption mechanism using nonviable suspended and immobilized microalgae biomass. The NH4+-N and COD could be degraded in the cell-free, nonviable microalgae because the microorganism in the textile wastewater could utilize them as a nutrient source. [GRAPHICS] .

Smart city is an important strategy for new urbanization and informatization. It has become an urgent agenda to build a complete evaluation system and realistic construction goals of a smart city. We researched relevant literatures about smart cities and summarized the research results of smart city evaluation system, which forms the theoretical basis of this study. To verify the importance of creating an evaluation system, the Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM) is used. We analyzed the smart city evaluation system with consensus results of experts and scholars are obtained. The results can be used as an important reference for the smart city governance in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).

Leaf Shedding Phenology of Ficus Glauca, Terminalia Catappa, and Cassia Fistula

Phenology is a study that explores periodic tree lifecycle events and how those events are influenced by seasonal climatic variation. This study aimed to observe the leaf-shedding period of three commonly found deciduous tree species in the tropics: Ficus glauca, Terminalia catappa, and Cassia fistula; and to analyze the climatic driving factors to trees' phenological phases. A field survey was conducted to observe the samples, each species consisted of five trees. The survey was conducted weekly from September 2016 to February 2017 in Bogor City and Regency. It was found that F. glauca shed its leaves more than once a year. The canopy coverage reached its lowest in February (65.7% coverage). Leaf shedding process in T. catappa reached its peak in January (83.7% coverage), meanwhile, C. fistula's shedding period is suspected to happen before September because its canopy coverage kept increasing during the survey (69.7%–95.1% coverage). The climatic factor that significantly affected F. glauca was the previous month's rainfall. When the rainfall in the previous month decreases, the leaf shedding increases. T. catappa and C. fistula were significantly affected by day length. For T. catappa, when day length decreases, the leaf shedding increases. Meanwhile, for C. fistula, when day length increases, it is shedding its leaves. Leaf phenology of deciduous trees in a tropical climate was affected by different climatic factors depending on their species.

Immobilized microalgae have been utilized for various bioprocesses that yield biofuels and high-value products. Various alginate solutions ranging from 0.5 to 5.0 % were investigated to develop microalgae immobilization technology. High intracellular density (3.94-4.89 g/cm(3)) and compressive strength (447-602 g) immobilized Chlorella vulgaris Wu-G22 (G22) and Chlorella sp. Wu-G23 (G23) microalgae granules with 3.0 % alginate solution could be obtained after 10 days cultivation using textile wastewater. In addition, effective removal of superfluous biological and chemical pollutants was cultured under mixotrophic conditions for immobilized G22 and G23 using textile wastewater after 7 days. Efficiencies of NH4+-N, COD and color removal were all greater than 50 % by using immobilized microalgae G23 with static cultivation. The present study confirmed that microalgal/alginate bio-beads/granular are one of the alternatives for defeating microalgae harvesting issues in larger scale production, where the microalgal cells stick to each other on external surfaces.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus has caused a public health crisis globally. Against the backdrop of global resilience, studies have demonstrated the therapeutic value of home gardening as a measure to strengthen human health. However, there is a lack of comparative studies on its benefits across countries. Studies need to examine the role of home gardening in improving public health in various societies to understand and encourage this practice broadly and effectively. We chose Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam as case studies, which have suffered substantial pandemic impacts, with millions of infections and thousands of deaths. We explored and compared the perceptions of people on home gardening and its health benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted online surveys in three countries between May 1 and September 30, 2022, with a total of 1172 participants. Data were collated on perceived pandemic stress, challenges and solutions in gardening, home gardening intentions, and mental and physical health benefits. In these countries, we found that perceived pandemic stress positively affects home gardening intentions, whereby the motivation of Vietnamese people is the highest. Challenges hinder gardening intentions, while the solutions only positively affect gardening intentions in Taiwan and Vietnam. Home gardening intentions positively affect mental and physical health, whereby there are higher mental health benefits in Taiwanese people than in Thai people. Our findings potentially support public health recovery and promote healthy lifestyles during the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2023, The Author(s).

The port of Valparaiso is located in the central region of Chile. Its topography is dominated by several creeks that drain waters from hills that surround the city. These creeks were formed through natural terrain abrasion produced by precipitation events that occur mainly in the winter season (June-August). Francia Creek drains waters from a catchment area of approximately 324 ha (3.24 km(2)) covered mainly by native and exotic vegetation, eroded soil and urban areas. The waters drained by the creek feed the storm water pipes of the city system. Sediment transport and deposition has been a recurring problem through the years. This research tests the following hypothesis: if a city restores its surrounding natural systems this would lead to the reduction of the occurrence of floods and high sediment-load events. Since Francia Creek is moderately urbanized and still preserves some of the natural vegetation while also having land covers with exotic (non-native) vegetation and loose soil, a hydrological and sediment transport model is developed for its catchment and streams to computationally test the hypothesis. The model is used to simulate possible natural scenarios of land use. The results show that a scenario in which current non-native vegetation land covers is replaced by a combination of native forest and native shrub (70% and 30%, respectively) produces the least amount of sediment volume to accumulate at the sand trap. This scenario reduces the sediment volume in around 200 m(3) (up to 20% percent reduction) and at the same time reduces the strength of peak floods in about 5%. In conclusion, the model output shows that the environmental-paradigm hypothesis is correct in terms of sediment volume reduction and stream flow peak floods attenuation, i.e., if the Francia Creek watershed is restored to approximate original (natural) land cover, sediment transport and floods are less severe than under current conditions.

Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Ganesha Campus, Indonesia, has an area of 28.86 hectares. The campus is located in Bandung. Starting from 2012, new buildings were constructed within the area, reducing the area of permeable surface significantly. In the past few years, there were several excess run off incidents in the campus. The insufficient area of permeable surface as well as the inadequate capacity of the drainage system contributes to the excess surface run off. The drainage system has only two outlets. Moreover, in some areas, the drainage systems are disconnected. Thus, most the surface run off are stored within the drainage system. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of infiltration wells for reducing the local excess run off in ITB. Precipitation data and drained service area are used to estimate the design discharge from each building in ITB. In order to avoid the excess surface run off of certain locations in ITB, then the infiltration wells are proposed to balance the area of impermeable surface. The effectiveness of the infiltration wells are evaluated by assessing their number to their contribution in reducing the excess surface runs off.

Lipid accumulating microalgae cultivation in textile wastewater: Environmental parameters optimization

The organic materials, nitrogen and phosphate nutrients in industrial textile wastewater could be utilized for algal growth. In order to increase algal wastewater treatment processing cost efficiency, microalgae collected in Taiwan could be grown using these wastewaters to produce biodiesel. The textile wastewater concentration, pH effects and phosphorus and nitrogen source effects on microalgae growth and lipid accumulation in Chlorella sp. G23 were investigated. The results showed the highest total fatty acid methyl ester content (20 +/- 4%) when microalgae G23 was cultivated using textile wastewater, K2HPO4 (4 mg/I.) and urea (1 g/L) at pH 10 with aeration (carbon dioxide sparging). The nitrogen source type had no effect on the overall NH4+-N and COD removal efficiency (75 +/- 3%). (C) 2017 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
