Coagulation/floculation as a key unit in the decentralized surface water treatment systems in upland rural areas of Vietnam: Results from a lab scale to a pilot scale system

Surface water is a primary water source for domestic water treatment systems in many countries around the world, especially in developing countries. The coagulation-flocculation process has been widely applied in water treatment systems due to low cost and easy-to-operate process. This study focuses on optimizing the operational conditions (dosage and pH) in the coagulation-flocculation process with different coagulants for the water supply in upland rural areas of Vietnam, from the lab scale to the pilot scale system. Two prehydrolyzed coagulants, polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and polyferric sulfate (PFS), and aluminum sulfate (alum), were used in the coagulation-flocculation testing. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to design the experiments, analyze the results, and optimize the response variables. The results showed that the quadratic regression models of PAC, PFS, and alum were statistically significant at the 95% confidence level (p < 0.05), and the p values of lack of fit for these models were insignificant (p > 0.05). The optimum conditions for 48.3% DOC and 92% turbidity removal using PAC were a dosage of 15 mg/L and a pH of 7.98. Similarity, 47.5% DOC and 90% turbidity removal were observed at 43.5 mg/L of PFS and pH 7.08. However, the lower removal efficiencies (37.2% DOC and 86.7% turbidity) were recorded at 60 mg/L of alum and pH 7.45. PAC and PFS were found to be more effective than alum in both DOC and turbidity removal from surface water. Notably, a combination of the coagulation process with aeration and a pre-filter system including a 1 micron polypropylene filter column, activated carbon, and cation exchange at the optimal operation conditions of coagulation through the RSM approach can be applied to treat Ba river water into domestic water that meets the national standard.

The application of emerging technologies in the treatment of urgent pollutants such as per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), especially perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), has become a prominent trend. Though biological solutions have not yet brought about the expected efficiency and economic value, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) like electrochemical oxidation with persulfate catalyst (EC/PS) have shown great promise. In order to shorten the time and improve the efficiency of pollution treatment, this study applied advanced optimization methods such as Plackett-Burman (6 factors, 12 runs) and response surface methodology with central composite design (RSM-CCD) (3 variables, 20 runs). The objective is to optimize the treatment of PFOA and PFOS in artificial wastewater by the EC/PS process, resulting in higher efficiency and more practical application. The PFOA and PFOS concentrations were measured on liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MSMS) system. The treated water quality and degradation pathway of PFOA by the EC/PS method were also shown. The experimental results showed that Ti/BDD was highly optimized in the removal of PFOA and PFOS using the EC/PS method. With the optimal conditions and parameters including current density (CD) at 9.5 mA/cm2, NaCl concentration at 2 g/L, and persulfate (PS) concentration at 4.2 g/L, the treatment efficiency of PFOA and PFOS of the prediction equations reached 93.32 % and 94.93 %, respectively. The quality of the treated water with parameters of PFOA, PFOS, chlorine (Cl2), fluoride (F-) was lower than the maximum value according to the EPA drinking water regulations [1], thereby showing that the potential for applying this technology in practice is very large. In addition, the main degradation pathway of PFOA was also demonstrated through hydrolysis reaction when recording by-products such as C7F15H (m/z 370) and perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA) (C6F13COO-, m/z 363) during the

Willingness to participate (WP) in community-based management depends on various factors such as a sense of community, perceptions, beliefs, and demographic characteristics. This study first evaluates the WP of locals (n = 100) in water management in the Ba River Basin – Highlands of Vietnam, where ethnic minority groups are living and working in the agricultural sector. The multivariable linear regression model is applied to explain WP through the factors including the sense of community (SC), dependance on river water (DW), perceptions of current water resource management (PW), level of income (IN), gender (GE), education levels (ED), and place of residence (PR). The results showed that the final regression model explains 67.9% of the variation in WP levels (R2 = 0.679, p 0.05) in this model. Sense of community and perceptions greatly influence community participation. To boost willingness, periodic training and campaigns are needed. Additionally, improving legal frameworks can encourage greater community involvement in water management programs. © 2025 The Authors.

Brazil is home to some of the world's most significant biodiversity, including vast portions of the Amazon rainforest. Universities are pivotal in leading environmental sustainability efforts within such a context, setting examples through their policies, research, and community engagement. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Brazil, hubs for research and innovation, making them ideal places to develop, test, and refine new sustainability technologies and practices, are facing regulatory pressures to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. By evaluating and publishing green metrics, Brazilian universities, like their counterparts in other countries, can set benchmarks for environmental performance, encouraging other institutions to adopt similar practices. There is a perceived need for research on green metrics at universities in Brazil, which may shed light on the factors that reflect their shift towards sustainability and environmental stewardship. Against this background, this paper outlines the status of the top 10 universities in Green Metric ranking located in Brazil. It provides some suggestions on how to improve the contribution of higher education institutions towards sustainability in a country that is both ecologically rich and diverse.

Preparing future entrepreneurs: reflections about the COVID-19 impacts on the entrepreneurial potential of Brazilian students

Purpose: This viewpoint aims to present reflections on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic scenario and the entrepreneurial potential of Brazilian students. Guidelines are proposed to support debates in the academic environment and better prepare future entrepreneurs to the labour market. Design/methodology/approach: Since this is a viewpoint article, some statements presented here are characterised by the authors' opinions. However, for a better foundation, bibliographic research related to the theme was carried out. Findings: In the authors' point of view, the COVID-19 pandemic scenario may negatively influence the decisions of Brazilian students that are characterised as potential future entrepreneurs. Educators can use the guidelines presented here to conduct debates with students in order to clarify aspects related to profile, behaviour and other issues. Originality/value: By understanding better entrepreneurial aspects in the COVID-19 pandemic scenario, Brazilian students can make better decisions. Social projects are an important mean to reduce social problems and they have an increased relevance in contexts of high social inequalities, as it is the case of Brazil. However, the existence of these projects may not be enough, they need to be properly managed, including projects risks. In this context, this paper aims to evaluate the application of risk management in social projects in Brazil. A survey was performed with social project managers and data was analyzed through TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution), to rank the items application levels, according to the ISO 31,000's guidelines. Results provide an overview of Brazilian situation. According to the findings presented, the items related to projects context analysis, and responsibility assignments in the projects were the items better applied, while the items related to the understanding of team members regarding risks in social projects and to the amplitude of risk management in the projects were the items with the worst rank positions. The findings presented here contribute to expand the debates on the subject.

Preparing future professionals to act towards sustainable development: an analysis of undergraduate students' motivations towards voluntary activities

Considering the need to prepare students to act towards sustainable development, volunteering activities can be an effective mean for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to develop the required skills in students for it. In this sense, this research aims to analyse the reasons for undergraduate students to participate in voluntary activities. Data from 192 undergraduate students were collected to conduct this analysis. These students were divided into two groups: those that participate (or recently participated) of social projects and those that do not participate. Considering this feature as the dependent variable, seven independent variables were analysed through Binary Logistic Regression. From the seven variables analysed, two were validated as variables that affect the decision of students to engage in voluntary activities: 'Incentive from the HEI for students to participate in volunteer programs' (V4) and 'The student's own beliefs lead to voluntary work' (V7). Their odds ratios were 2.901 and 3.164, respectively. The findings of this research contribute to the literature about volunteering, since it explores the motivations that lead undergraduate students to engage in these activities. The findings showed the importance of HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) incentives towards volunteering, which emphasizes the role played by these institutions in students' actions.

Purpose This study aims to analyze the difficulties observed in the management of three hydroelectric turbine projects developed by a large multinational company in the metal-mechanic segment, identifying those most critical. Design/methodology/approach Through a bibliographic search, difficulties throughout project management were identified. These difficulties were used as a research protocol to carry out three case studies in a hydroelectric turbine manufacturer. The projects selection aimed to contemplate different characteristics to encompass the diversity of their typologies. Data were analyzed through content analysis technique and the difficulties were ordered via Grey Relational Analysis (GRA). Findings Qualitative data analysis provided specific insights regarding the characteristics of each project. When analyzing the difficulties of hydroelectric turbine projects management via GRA, it is observed that those difficulties most evidenced were related to integration and communication, suppliers management and objectives definition. Originality/value The main contribution of this research lies in the sector under analysis. The literature about hydroelectric turbine projects is scarce. In addition, no similar studies were found in the literature.

Business models towards SDGs: the barriers for operationalizing Product-Service System (PSS) in Brazil

sustainable development requires the creation and development of new business models. Sharing economy will maximize the use of a product by several people, while it enables the reduction of natural resource consumption. In this sense, Product-Service systems (PSS) can greatly contribute to achieving the sustainable Development Goals, published by the United Nations. In this context, the present study aims to analyse the barriers associated with the operationalization of PSS business models in Brazil. Nineteen barriers listed in the literature supported a questionnaire used in a survey of Brazilian researchers. Data analysis was performed through Hierarchical Cluster Analysis, descriptive statistics and TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution). TOPSIS is used for comparative ordering of barriers in terms of intensity. The results showed that there are many barriers observed in the Brazilian scenario for the operationalization of PSS;those related to the resistance to change to the mentioned business models and the lack of necessary skills to manage them stood out. These findings can be used to enhance the debates about PSS in the Brazilian context.

Purpose This article aims to evaluate the integration level of a quality management system (QMS) and an environmental management system (EMS) in a tire manufacturer and propose a guide to evaluate the integration of these systems in companies. Design/methodology/approach The methodological strategies used in this research were literature review;and case study, with interviews to verify professionals' perception about benefits from integration. Data from interviews were analyzed through Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). Findings The results showed that the studied company has a simple level of integration, observing only some low intensity benefits. Thus, it was recommended that the company partially integrate its management systems (MSs) before evolving into something more complex. The literature and the findings of case study were used as basis for proposing a guide to evaluate MS integration. Originality/value Lessons learned throughout the study and the suggested guide can support other companies to assess the integration level of their QMS and EMS. Thus, the findings presented here can be useful for researchers and managers.
