Thermo-responsive methylcellulose/hyaluronic acid-mesalamine hydrogel in targeted drug delivery for ulcerative colitis

Current treatments for ulcerative colitis (UC), including mesalamine (Me) enemas, face limitations such as poor colonic retention, systemic side effects, and suboptimal patient compliance. To address these challenges, this study developed a thermo-responsive hydrogel combining hyaluronic acid-mesalamine (HA-Me) conjugates with methylcellulose (MC), providing a targeted and sustained drug delivery platform for UC treatment. HA-Me conjugates were synthesized via a nucleophilic addition-elimination reaction, with FT-IR and 1H-NMR confirming successful conjugation and a grafting ratio of 12.45%. Rheological analysis revealed a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 36.7-37.7 °C, ensuring gelation at body temperature when the MC concentration was 5-7 wt%. The optimized hydrogel exhibits intestinal retention properties, thereby improving drug bioavailability. The results confirmed that this hydrogel not only improved drug release time but also provided a protective barrier for inflamed wounds, facilitating wound healing, reducing the risk of reinfection, and improving medical compliance. Its mucoadhesive properties further supported effective drug delivery and localized therapeutic effects. This study highlights the potential of the MC/HA-Me hydrogel as a platform for overcoming the limitations of conventional UC treatments, offering opportunities for tailored therapeutic applications and future clinical development. © 2025 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

The purpose of this research work on medical image analysis is to identify and diagnose knee osteoarthritis (OA) utilizing medical images by applying machine learning techniques. Knee OA is a degenerative joint disease that is becoming more prevalent in aged people worldwide. The study examines the effectiveness of several machine learning algorithms, including deep learning, to analyze medical images of knee OA, such as X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The research findings suggest that using machine learning algorithms might greatly improve the accuracy and efficacy of detecting knee OA, especially in its early stages. Moreover, machine learning algorithms can assist in the creation of specialized treatment plans by predicting the progression of the disease and recommending appropriate remedies. The findings of this study show how machine learning-based medical image analysis has the potential to enhance patient outcomes and quality of life for those with knee OA. Cancer detection diagnosis, neurological condition identification, and cardiovascular function analysis are a few instances of medical picture analysis employing machine learning. Moreover, image-guided treatments have been made more accurate and surgical planning has been made easier with the use of machine learning algorithms. Various methods are applied to achieve a test accuracy of 76.10% which is just 5% less than the accuracy provided by the Kellen-Lawrence Grading Scale. Overall, machine learning-based medical image analysis has the potential to revolutionize medical practice by facilitating earlier and more precise diagnosis, individualized treatment planning, and improved patient outcomes. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Eye-tracking studies focused on art galleries and museums within the realm of Instagram, especially in the Indonesian context, are notably scant. This investigation elucidates the user interaction and experience of the art gallery’s Instagram account, @galerinasional. Employing a quantitative approach, we implemented eye-tracking experiments using the well-known online eye-tracking software RealEye. The study participants were followers of the National Gallery of Indonesia’s (Galnas) Instagram profile, seven women and three men, in two age brackets: 18–24 years (n = 5) and 25–34 years (n = 5). The experimental protocol required participants to execute five tasks centered on locating exhibition details and artwork on the Galnas Instagram platform, with a duration of 100 s allocated to each task. The Participant Quality Grade (PQG), examination duration, optimal browser dimensionality, K-factor mean, gaze and fixation frequencies, and heat maps were determined for the participants. The key findings are as follows. (1) The participants’ PQG scores were predominantly between 4 and 6. (2) Investigative browsing typically exceeded the 100-s limit. (3) The consensus on the ideal browser dimensions hovered around 1,368.6 × 814.8 px. (4) The K-factor mean across participants tended toward K > 0. (5) The average gaze occurrence was 27 items per second for most participants. (6) A noticeable disparity in fixation counts was observed between the two age groups, with individuals aged 25–34 demonstrating prolonged engagement with Galnas’ content. In recent years, due to the proliferation of information and communication technology, as well as AI technology, industrial control systems, which were once in a closed network environment, have also integrated related technologies and gradually connected to external networks. Although this can enhance the efficiency of industrial production, it greatly increases the information security threats to industrial control systems. Among them, the information security issues of critical infrastructures are a key issue. If these critical infrastructures are attacked by cyber hackers, it could pose threats that jeopardize the safety of the general population. In light of this, this study focuses on the critical infrastructure of the power grid, proposing a semi-supervised intrusion detection system (IDS) technology by using the one-class classification. It analyzes data from the electricity distribution system to assess whether the system has been attacked. This research employs a power grid dataset to train the proposed model and execute the experiments. Lilies are popular in the global flower market, but consumers often lack information about specific varieties. To address this issue, this paper proposes a computer recognition platform based on the Vision Transformer (ViT) architecture. The proposed platform uses an improved vision transformer (ViT) architecture to classify different types of lilies, allowing consumers to access information and names of various Lilium species. The experimental results show that the proposed lily classification model achieved a 96.4% accuracy rate in classifying six lily species.

The implementation of titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a photocatalyst material in hydrogen (H2) evolution reaction (HER) has embarked renewed interest in the past decade. Rapid electron-hole pairs recombination and wide band gap of a photo-sensitive material of TiO2 are detrimental toward the targeted catalytical reaction. In this study, we present the rational design, fabrication, photocatalytic performance of TiO2-Cu/CuO/Cu2O heterostructures (CuTi) using viable chemical reduction method. The Z-scheme and S-scheme are succesfully generated across the TiO2/CuO/Cu2O interfaces, while the Schottky junction arises on the Cu perimeters. This is evidenced from the blue shifted about 0.3 eV of Cu 2p core level determined by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), in combination with the formation of inverse V-shape of the Mott-Schottky plots. In addition, we find that Cu/CuO/Cu2O facilitates photon absorption range up to the visible region. The multiple heterojunction and the large number of OHsurface enhanced charge carrier transfer are associated to the suppression of photoluminescence (PL) intensity, high surface hydroxyl (OHsurface) density in CuTi probed by XPS, and fast electron transfer based on the electrochemical measurements. The presence of OHsurface inhibits the recombination of electron. A significant H2 photogeneration rate enhancement is achieved when an optimized 5 wt% Cu/CuO/Cu2O concentration is used on TiO2 to achieve 7,157.19 μmol·g−1 (1,789.30 μmol·g−1·h−1). Based on this finding, zero emission energy innitiative could be materialized under multiple heterojunctions in photocatalytic process is beneficial for enhancing the H2 production. © 2025 The Authors

In this article, an additional protected fiber and free-space optical (FSO) link path is proposed, to provide self-healing capabilities for protection against fiber faults in wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) systems. The new optical line terminal (OLT), remote node (RN), and optical network unit (ONU) in the presented PON architecture result in self-protective function against fiber breakpoints. In the measurement, 25 Gbit/s on-off keying (OOK) modulation was applied on each WDM channel to assess the downstream and upstream signals after 25 km single-mode fiber (SMF) and 25 km SMF + 2 m FSO connections, respectively. In addition to using protected fiber paths for self-healing operations. This PON system can also apply the FSO link method. The measured bit error rate (BER) for all downstream and upstream traffic was maintained below 3.8 × 10−3 with forward error correction (FEC). The detected optical power sensitivity of the proposed self-restorative fiber- and FSO-based WDM-PON for downstream and upstream WDM signals ranged from −33.5 to −28.5 dBm and from −33 to −28.5 dBm, respectively, and the corresponding power budgets of the downstream and upstream WDM signals were between 29.5 and 30.5 dB and 33 and 38 dB, respectively. © 2025 by the authors.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is primarily attributed to inner-ear factors, yet the role of age-related middle ear characteristics remains elusive. Employing a finite element (FE) model, we conducted a comparative analysis with clinical data extracted from a retrospective cohort study involving 90 younger adults (mean age = 38.1 ± 7.7) and 111 older adults (mean age = 63.8 ± 8.4). This study investigates the comparative effects of different nitrogen sources—peptone, tryptone, and bovine serum albumin (BSA)—on the growth, electron transport mechanisms, and MFCs performance of halophilic bacteria Bacillus clausii J1G-o%B. The objective is to identify the most effective nitrogen source for optimizing bacterial growth and enhancing MFC efficiency. Comprehensive analysis reveals that tryptone and peptone significantly enhance bacterial growth and stability compared to BSA. Increased concentrations of these nitrogen sources correlate with elevated ammonia production and notable pH changes, indicating heightened metabolic activity. The non-linear relationship between scan rate and current density suggests diffusion-limited redox reactions. Notably, higher tryptone concentrations significantly increase the electron transfer rate constant to 3.66 ± 0.02 s−1 when the concentration increases to 0.1 g/100 mL. Early voltage increases at around the 30th hour to 0.175 V under the T-0.1 condition further support the critical role of tryptone in accelerating bacterial growth and biofilm formation. Cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrate that nitrogen source type and concentration influence electrical double layer characteristics. These findings underscore the potential of tryptone to optimize Bacillus clausii electrochemical performance, achieving a maximum power density of 36.93 mW/m2 at a current density of 196 mA/m2, paving the way for bioelectrochemical system applications. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
