Mangrove ecosystems are one of the blue carbon ecosystems in the coastal region. Mangroves can assimilate high carbon and can save carbon in the long term. Settlements and various centres of community activities have developed on the coast of Kendari Bay, which drastically decreased mangrove vegetation. Research on blue carbon placed in mangrove forests is vital to be carried out to determine changes in regional conditions in the coastal region. Spatial modelling is used to estimate the degradation of blue carbon stocks. A remote sensing data is required for producing spatial and temporal maps. InVEST (Integrated Assessment of Ecosystem Services and Sacrifices) can be used for mapping and modelling total carbon stock changes based on land cover changing in Kendari Bay. Carbon stocks can be calculated through spatial and temporal mapping in InVEST with past, present and future scenarios. Spatial dan temporal maps form InVEST can be considered in determining policies related to mangrove management and making more appropriate decisions in managing Kendari Bay area. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The energy spectrum and spatial distribution of the neutron beam from a reactor is an essential component of designing experimentations utilizing the reactor as a radiation source. Obtaining such information requires the use of detailed MCNP model of the reactor and experimental validation procedures. After updating the MCNP model of the University of Florida Training Reactor (UFTR) to align it with the current core arrangement that uses low enriched uranium (LEU), both the radial neutron flux toward the beam ports and the energy spectrum at the reactor core were generated using the model. This was followed by experimental validations based on neutron activation analysis (NAA) by irradiating multiple activation foils. A constant ratio between MCNP and measured neutron flux values was obtained at multiple locations along the reactor's beam ports, showing that the model captures the spatial distribution of neutron flux profiles without a significant systematic error. The energy spectrum at the core was extracted using the Unfolding with MAXED and GRAVEL (UMG) software. The spectrum unfolded by both MAXED and GRAVEL algorithms display features expected in thermal reactor neutron energy distribution, i.e., thermal, fast or fission, and intermediate or slowing down regions. The thermal and epithermal neutron fluxes at the reactor core calculated from the spectrum unfolded by the MAXED n algorithm are 1. 56 ± 0. 12 × 1012 cm2s and 1. 98 ± 0. 01 × 1012 n sm2s, whereas the corresponding values calculated from the spectrum unfolded by the GRAVEL algorithm are 1. 50 ± 0. 12 × n 1012 n and 3. 74 ± 0. 21 × 1012. Following the cm2s cm2s experimental validation, the full geometry MCNP model of the reactor has been utilized for a neutron tomography research project and it will continue to benefit future projects using the reactor facility. © 2020 IEEE

Estimating the Roles of Three Components of Regional Haze on Traffic Accidents

This study estimated changes in the levels of three haze components at the time of two severe traffic accidents on an expressway and a freeway to determine environmental factors contributing to the accidents. Monitoring data and surveillance images were collected to determine the precise causes of the poor visibility–related accidents. The haze extraction method was used to assess the relationship between the components and visibility during the accidents. The results revealed that the moisture was significantly not the main haze–fog component. The haze components were ordered as in terms of their correlation with local visibility: PM2.5 > SOAs > RH. The spatial distributions and evolutions of the three components indicated that the PM2.5 remained high from midnight until early morning but decreased slightly at the time of both accidents. PM2.5 and SOAs were the main causes of the heavy haze, and SOAs had the greatest impact on visibility. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Low water solubility leading to poor bioavailability has an impact on the decreasing of curcumin uptake in the body, resulting in a deficiency of its medicinal benefits. This study aims to overcome the limitations of curcumin by formulating a nano-emulsion called curcumin emulsion (CE). Furthermore, in order to improve the physicochemical properties and drug release features, the CE was encapsulated within chitosan-assembled mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Chi@SiO2@CE). This material was prepared using a one-pot method and was characterized by ATR-FTIR, PSA, TGA, N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, and TEM. Additionally, antioxidant activity and in vitro drug release were also conducted. The study demonstrated that CE has strong antioxidant activity (IC50 = 14.14 µM) compared to curcumin alone. Additionally, the Chi@SiO2@CE exhibited pH-controlled release behavior, with less than 20% release of curcumin under an artificial gastric environment and 50% release under pH 7.4 conditions within 24 hours. Therefore, this research suggest that Chi@SiO2@CE material has potential as a pH-responsive drug delivery material. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Assessing the ecosystem service values of tea plantations using conventional and organic farming methods: Is organic farming always better?

Low-elevation mountainous (LEM) areas in some countries are reclaimed for agriculture (especially, for deep cultivation of tea trees) due to their accessibility, higher temperature, and more rainfall, contributing to biodiversity and ecological balance. However, extensive development in these areas causes lasting ecological damage;and hence it is crucial to evaluate the ecological value of these areas for formulating relevant ecological protection policies. Therefore, this study evaluated the ecosystem service value of tea plantations in LEM areas using the contingent valuation method based on the subjective consciousness of farmers, rather than an objective assessment. A questionnaire survey was conducted on tea farmers in Mingjian Township (which is one of the major tea-producing LEM areas in Mid-Taiwan);and ecosystem service values of tea plantations between conventional farming methods (CFMs) and organic farming methods (OFMs) were compared. Firstly, the differences in willingness to pay (WTP) for the samples including and excluding protest responses were investigated, and then a regression analysis to estimate the WTP price for maintaining the tea plantation ecology was conducted. Empirical results showed a significantly negative correlation between the WTP price and the education level of farmers in tea plantations using CFMs, but a significantly positive correlation in tea plantations using both CFMs and OFMs. Most respondents were male and used CFMs to operate tea plantations;and those with higher monthly income and using both CFMs and OFMs were willing to pay more. Regarding ecosystem services of tea plantations, the respondents preferred the "provisioning" ecosystem services, and were willing to pay an average of NT$ 718.92 and NT$ 794.32 per year for maintaining the ecology of tea plantations using CFMs and OFMs, respectively. Damage and loss of land resources due to improper land management tend to increase erosion. It will affect the production, ecological, and hydrological functions in the upstream watershed area. However, sedimentation that occurs due to erosion often affects the practical life of the dams. The purpose of this research is to estimate erosion and the distribution of Total Suspended Sediments (TSS) geospatially from Landsat-8 imagery data in 2015 and 2019 for Krueng Pase Watershed. The considerable erosion that occurred in 2014 was 117,987.71 tons. While the erosion that occurred in January 2015 was 18,624.45 tons, and the erosion in August 2019 was 6,672.06 tons. The results of the TSS distribution using algorithms in 2015 obtained the largest total suspended sediment with a value >17.15 mg/l found on the coastal, riverbanks and the smallest TSS with a value of ≤12.73 mg/l found on the upstream area. The TSS were found on the coastal with a value of >16.05 mg/l, and the smallest TSS >12.92 mg/l found on the upstream area in 2019. Information on the distribution of total sediment is a consideration in the application of the eco-hydrology concept as a short-term solution in water management. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In agricultural water research, the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has emerged as a pivotal approach for large-scale data collection. Water availability in the context of water quality is very important, both for domestic and industrial purposes. For domestic purposes, drinking water and bathing water are separated. Meanwhile, for the palm oil industry, boiler filler is differentiated from additional process water (dilution water). Water quality parameters can be assessed from turbidity and Total Dissolve Solid (TDS). Measurements using measuring instruments separately and repeatedly require significant energy, time, and costs. This research was conducted with the primary objective of presenting a novel method for categorizing water quality with the approach of IoT sensor technology. The research methodology entailed the utilization of an integrated IoT water sensors system in conjunction with manual water categorization. The methods consist of (1) system design, (2) design and installation of sensor and IoT-based microcontrollers, and (3) accuracy and precision testing compared with laboratory measurements. The precision of the integrated IoT water sensors was assessed through a dedicated sensor precision test, resulting in an accuracy rate of 94.4% for the turbidity sensor and 97.5% for the TDS sensor. Notably, this approach successfully discriminated drinking water with valid categorization, while other water types, including groundwater, water with tea, and water with coffee, yielded null categorization results.

This study aims to develop a system for extracting crucial information from tire sidewalls using Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Initially, images of tire were captured manually by smartphone cameras, including Redmi 9T, iPhone 11, and Galaxy S23 Ultra. The captured images are then transferred to a computer for storage. Subsequently, these images were cropped according to the boundaries identified by Hough Circle Transform (HCT). The cropped images were then further pre-processed. During the pre-processing phase, geometrical transformation and image sharpening techniques are applied to enhance the clarity and readability of the text images. The text is then extracted using Google Vision, with the extracted text categorized by size, DOT, brand and pattern. The results indicated that the effectiveness of image pre-processing was constrained by the accuracy of circle detection, which reached a maximum rate of 87.1%. This causes parts of the text to be cut out inaccurately, leading to a suboptimal extraction accuracy of 55.65%. It is also observed that the Redmi 9T camera produced inconsistent results compared to other devices. Specifically, the iPhone 11 and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra demonstrated superior extraction accuracies of 69.71% and 66.37%, respectively, whereas the Redmi 9T achieved a lower extraction accuracy of 37.76%.

An e-Commerce company has been using an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system for several years, but is still constrained in its implementation, this is reflected in the number of issue/change request tickets submitted by users who have not been able to reach ideal conditions. To overcome this problem, we need an appropriate reference model, the ERP system user acceptance model in companies. The study conducted factors that influence the level of acceptance of SAP ERP users in the XYZ group to then determine a model that is able to explain practically the level of ERP system user acceptance, which in turn can produce concrete proposals to increase ERP system user acceptance. Research is quantitative descriptive using factor analysis and regression analysis methods. The research method uses a questionnaire with a total of 107 valid respondents coming from 8 company names under the XYZ group in 6 Southeast Asian countries. The conclusion of the study is that there are 24 indicators and 4 factors that influence user acceptance of the SAP ERP system. These four factors are the low contribution of the ERP system, the quality of ERP systems and data, the development of ERP systems, and also the low quality of ERP system supporters. It is hoped that by optimizing the value of the 4 factors, the XYZ group can increase user acceptance of the SAP ERP system so that the system can provide benefits expected by the company to be competitive advantage. © 2021 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
