Fabrication and characterisation of freestanding epoxy/ single-walled carbon nanotubes composites for low-level neutron sensing

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) is incorporated into the epoxy matrix using ethanol as a solvent for potential use for low-level neutron sensing. The uniformity of the distribution of the SWCNT within the epoxy matrix was confirmed with surface morphology, was further verified by XRD diffraction patterns, Raman, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL). The composites were exposed to doses of neutrons ranging from 10 to 200 mGy with an energy range of 0–11 MeV, and their effects on the structural and luminescence properties of the composites were evaluated using Raman, FTIR and PL emissions. Interestingly, spectral alterations, such as shifting PL signals and the disappearance of Raman/FTIR peaks, suggest charge-trapping centres, bond breaking, and defect generation. The PL emission showed spectrum broadening, a slight peak shift, and strong dose-response linearity with R-squared (R2) of ∼99 % and signal reproducibility within 5 %. The neutron response of these epoxy/SWCNT composites shows their potential for low-level neutron sensing. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Radon and thoron in the ambient air of the caves in Bohol Island, Philippines

Radon and thoron concentrations in the ambient air were investigated in the caves of Bohol Island, Philippines. The study focused on Hinagdanan, Batungay, and Princess Manan-aw Caves to establish the baseline data on current radon and thoron levels and estimate the effective doses absorbed by tourists and workers during tour operations, specifically due to radon and its progeny. Radon and thoron were measured using a CR-39-based detector called the Raduet, which was placed along the cave pathways. Radon concentration inside the caves ranges from 127 to 1829 Bq m⁻³, while thoron concentration varies from 28 to 1574 Bq m⁻³. Results showed that radon levels in all three caves exceeded the recommended safety limit (300 Bq m⁻³), which may have been influenced by cave structures affecting natural ventilation. Despite the high radon concentrations in these caves, tourists are generally safe due to low exposure time. However, the estimated annual effective dose for cave guides was found to vary from 0.77 to 46.27 mSv y⁻¹. If uncontrolled, doses to occupationally exposed workers due to radon and thoron may exceed the country's national dose limit (20 mSv y⁻¹) and may increase the risks of health effects. © 2025 Korean nuclear Society

The synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using green, eco-friendly methods has garnered significant attention due to the potential advantages of using natural polymers, such as ι-carrageenan, as stabilizing agents. However, challenges remain in controlling the size, distribution, and stability of the nanoparticles, as well as optimizing their antimicrobial activity. In this study, gamma irradiation of ι-carrageenan solutions was investigated as a method for synthesizing AgNPs and exploring their antimicrobial properties. The primary objective was to assess how varying radiation doses and ι-carrageenan concentrations affect the formation, size distribution, and antimicrobial activity of the AgNPs. ι-Carrageenan solutions (0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 w/v %) were mixed with 0.2 M silver nitrate (AgNO₃) solutions and irradiated at doses ranging from 0 to 20 kGy using Co-60. UV–vis spectroscopic analysis indicated the successful formation of AgNPs, with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peaks appearing between 402 and 418 nm. These peaks shifted slightly towards shorter wavelengths as the irradiation rose, signaling a reduction in nanoparticle size. The optimal synthesis of AgNPs occurred at 0.5 % ι-carrageenan concentration and a dose of 15 kGy, where the SPR peak intensity and nanoparticle formation were most pronounced. XRD confirmed the presence of silver nanoparticles with face-centered cubic (FCC) structure. Particle size analysis, using dynamic light scattering (DLS), revealed that AgNPs ranged in size from 85 to 142 nm, with smaller particles forming at higher doses. At a 1 kGy dose, the nanoparticle size averaged 114 nm, but increased doses (15–20 kGy) led to a significant reduction in particle size to 85 nm. This size reduction was attributed to the fragmentation of larger particles as the irradiation dose increased. Three natural alkaloids: caffeine, theobromine and theophylline are reported for their application as dielectric layers in organic field effect transistors (OFETs) utilizing both gold and aluminum gate electrodes. After careful purification of the materials, a detailed analysis using x-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle (CA), impedance spectroscopy, amplitude modulated kelvin probe force microscope (AM-KPFM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) is performed. OFET devices operating at typical voltages between 2 and 4 V have been fabricated with the investigated alkaloid films processed via blade coating (caffeine) or vacuum processing (theobromine and theophylline). The dielectric properties of these three alkaloids are measured in impedance spectroscopy and negligible leakage currents are observed when deposited in thin films as dielectric layers in OFETs on aluminum electrodes. There is a high tendency of these molecules to crystallize and form uneven surfaces. When the thin film forming properties are carefully controlled, organic alkaloids can be employed in applications involving implantable, transient or even edible electronics. © 2022 IEEE.

The importance of silicon cannot be undermined - in photovoltaics (PV) as well as in semiconductor industries. However, silicon is very brittle. Silicon cells/wafers crack easily during manufacturing assembly and/or during device operations. Crack Catcher AI uses novel smart fracture mechanics approach with Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodologies to predict and control crack/damage evolution in thin silicon cells/wafers. This is critical as semiconductor 3D integration technology calls for wafer-to-wafer bonding with utmost alignment accuracy and yield/reliability.

Understanding the inversely correlated series resistance(Rs) and parallel resistance(Rp) remains a challenge. Here we report that the variation of Rs and Rp is inversely related through the morphology of the donor and acceptor interface in CuPc organic solar cells, when comparing the bilayer structure and bulk heterojunction structure. It was also found that the charge carrier concentration near the donor–acceptor interface plays an important role in the relationships of Rs and Rp under fixed interfacial morphology, which was verified by the change of Voc. The inversely correlated Rs and Rp contributes to the improvement of the fillfactor, and in turn the power conversion efficiency.

The cement industry in Indonesia, heavily relies on coal, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Simultaneously, Java Island generates over 23 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) annually, with limited utilization for energy recovery. This study evaluates the feasibility of substituting coal with refuse-derived fuel (RDF) from MSW in Java's cement industry, focusing on environmental, economic, and technical aspects. Scenario analyses indicate that substituting 10%, 20%, and 30% of thermal energy with RDF could divert up to 8.7 million tons of MSW from landfills annually, reducing GHG emissions by up to 2.77 million Gg CO₂-eq. These reductions align with Indonesia's environmental policies and global climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. The economic assessment demonstrates the viability of RDF, with potential annual cost savings of up to $421 million. Beyond addressing coal dependency, RDF adoption supports circular economy practices, reduces landfill reliance, and mitigates environmental pollution. However, challenges such as infrastructure gaps and regulatory barriers require attention. This study provides actionable insights to guide policy formulation, foster industry investment, and facilitate the implementation of RDF-based energy solutions. By bridging waste management and sustainable energy practices, the findings contribute to Indonesia's renewable energy goals, emphasizing the practical applications of RDF for a more sustainable future in industrial operations. © 2025 The Authors

This study introduces the Quantum-Train Quantum Fast Weight programmer (QT-QFWP) framework, enabling efficient and scalable programming of variational quantum circuits (VQCs) through quantum-driven parameter updates for the classical slow programmer controlling the fast programmer VQC. By optimizing quantum and classical parameter management, QT-QFWP significantly reduces parameters (by 70–90%) compared to Quantum Long Short-Term Memory (QLSTM) and Quantum Fast Weight programmer (QFWP) while maintaining accuracy. Benchmarking on time-series tasks—including Damped Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM), NARMA5, and Simulated Gravitational Waves (GW)—demonstrates superior efficiency and predictive accuracy. QT-QFWP is particularly advantageous for near-term quantum systems, addressing qubit and gate fidelity constraints, enhancing VQC deployment in time-sensitive applications, and expanding quantum computing’s role in machine learning.
