Sustainable Bio-Adsorbent Generated from Coffee Waste for Dual Application in Heavy Metal and Dye Removal

Heavy metal and dye contamination from industrial wastewater present substantial dangers to both ecological systems and human well-being. This study explores the upcycling of Coffee Powder Trimmings (CPT), a biomass waste rich in oxygen-containing functional groups, for water remediation. CPT was first used to adsorb Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions, then pyrolyzed at 750 °C to form metal oxide biochar composites (Cu/CB and Fe/CB). Characterization confirmed the formation of CuO and Fe3O4 particles and the retention of key adsorption functionalities. The materials were evaluated for methylene blue (MB) removal across pH levels, various water bodies, and multiple reuse cycles. CPT effectively removed >95% of Cu2+ and Fe3+ via chelation, while Fe/CB achieved up to 97.8% MB removal due to synergistic π–π, hydrogen bonding, and coordination interactions. Both biochars retained high performance after five cycles, with Fe/CB maintaining 86.88% efficiency. These results highlight CPT-derived biochar as a sustainable, low-cost adsorbent for dual removal of heavy metals and dyes.

Background The removal of hazardous dyes from water by magnetic adsorbents has received significant interest due to their low cost and ease of separation from the solution phase. This study explores the efficacy of a novel hybrid adsorbent, magnetite and activated charcoal-modified MgAl layered double hydroxide (MgAlLDH@MAC), for removing congo red (CR) from aqueous solutions. Methods MgAlLDH@MAC was successfully prepared via a co-precipitation to hydrothermal method and characterized using FE-SEM, FE-STEM, VSM, BET, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and HPLC analysis. Significant findings The incorporation of magnetite and activated charcoal was successful, resulting in excellent adsorption performance for CR and easy separation from the solution due to its magnetic properties. The adsorbent achieved a maximum adsorption capacity of 625 mg/g, which is in line with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, the adsorbent demonstrated excellent stability and reusability, retaining 91.78% efficiency after five adsorption-desorption. This study offers a fresh viewpoint on creating high-performance LDH adsorbents that remove dyes quickly and effectively using carbon and magnetite materials. © 2024, The Authors. Gajahmada Street is one of the main streets in the city of Semarang. The location is very strategic, which connects the Golden Triangle Region in Semarang City which is the center of the city. As a city center, transportation activities in the area are very high. Transportation activities produce carbon dioxide emissions. The accumulation of carbon dioxide emissions is dangerous for health and the environment. Semarang City Government provides green open space along the road section to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The purpose of this study was to determine the vegetation resilience to absorbing carbon dioxide at that location. The data collection method uses literature collection and field observations. The results showed the ability of green open space to absorb carbon dioxide emissions is 1.218,7 tons/ha/year. While the emissions produced are 6.832 tons/year, meaning that there is residual carbon dioxide that is not absorbed, that is 5.613,3 tons/year. © The Authors, published by EDP sciences, 2020.

The deteriorations of Meniere's disease (MD) cochlear symptoms (i.e., hearing loss and tinnitus) are progressive. We proposed sample entropy (SampEn) of transiently evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) for quantitative assessment of MD cochlear symptoms without subject-dependent variations and system-dependent differences to prevent impacts of MD cochlear symptoms on life qualities of patients. This cross-sectional study based in a single center investigated 1) the preferred parameters for estimation of TEOAE SampEn and 2) resulting performances in diagnosing of MD cochlear symptoms. Nineteen normal (38 ears) and 29 (29 ears) unilateral definitive MD were recruited between June 2021 and March 2022. Hearing loss and tinnitus of MD were measured by pure-tone audiometry and described by chief complaint, respectively. TEOAE SampEn were estimated using different parameters of data size N = 772, template length m from 1 to 9 and similarity tolerance r from 0.1 to 1. Areas under receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs) were used to evaluate the performances of TEOAE SampEn in diagnosing MD cochlear symptoms. In terms of result, TEOAE SampEn based on the parameters of (N = 772, m = 2, r = 0.2) resulted in the maximum AUROCs = 0.7732 and 0.8421 in diagnosing MD hearing loss and tinnitus, respectively. In conclusion, TEOAE SampEn provides good performances and demonstrates great potential of assessment for MD cochlear symptoms. In future, recruitment of more participants, especially MD with tinnitus only without hearing loss, and other OHC-related disease, is necessary to further support the findings of this study. © 2023 The Author(s)

Efficient Bitcoin Address Classification Using Quantum-Inspired Feature Selection

Over 900 million Bitcoin transactions have been recorded, posing considerable challenges for machine learning regarding computation time and maintaining prediction accuracy. We propose an innovative approach using quantum-inspired algorithms implemented with Simulated Annealing and Quantum Annealing to address the challenge of local minima in solution spaces. This method efficiently identifies key features linked to mixer addresses, significantly reducing model training time. By categorizing Bitcoin addresses into six classes—exchanges, faucets, gambling, marketplaces, mixers, and mining pools—and applying supervised learning methods, our results demonstrate that feature selection with SA reduced training time by 30.3% compared to using all features in a random forest model while maintaining a 91% F1-score for mixer addresses. This highlights the potential of quantum-inspired algorithms to swiftly and accurately identify high-risk Bitcoin addresses based on transaction features. © 2024, CC BY.

In recent years, many mammographic image analysis methods have been introduced for improving cancer classification tasks. Two major issues of mammogram classification tasks are leveraging multi-view mammographic information and class-imbalance handling. In the first problem, many multi-view methods have been released for concatenating features of two or more views for the training and inference stage. Having said that, most multi-view existing methods are not explainable in the meaning of feature fusion, and treat many views equally for diagnosing. Our work aims to propose a simple but novel method for enhancing examined view (main view) by leveraging low-level feature information from the auxiliary view (ipsilateral view) before learning the high-level feature that contains the cancerous features. For the second issue, we also propose a simple but novel malignant mammogram synthesis framework for upsampling minor class samples. Our easy-to-implement and no-training framework has eliminated the current limitation of the CutMix algorithm which are unreliable synthesized images with random pasted patches, hard-contour problems, and domain shift problems. Our results on VinDr-Mammo and CMMD datasets show the effectiveness of our two new frameworks for both multi-view training and synthesizing mammographic images, outperforming the previous conventional methods in our experimental settings. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

The Mekong River Basin (MRB) is one of the highest biodiversity areas in the world and is the vital source of livelihoods for more than 60 millions of people over six countries in Southeast Asia. However, it is suffering from a severe sediment starvation problem caused by climate change and human activities, particularly dam constructions. Understanding long-term sediment changes thus plays a crucial role for management and contingency plans. Current sediment concentration data in the MRB are extremely sporadic, making it a non-trivial task to analyze them. This paper focuses on the sediment reconstruction to provide long-term reliable suspended sediment concentration (SSC) data using Machine Learning (ML) perspectives. In particular, a novel semi-supervised ML model, which can effectively deal with data sparsity, is introduced to predict/reconstruct missing sediment data. The key idea of this approach is to exploit abundant available hydroclimate data to reduce training overfitting rather than solely relying on sediment concentration data, thus enhancing the accuracy of the employed ML models. Extensive experiments on data obtained from 1979 to 2019 at the three main stations (i.e., Chiang Saen, Nong Khai, and Mukdahan) are conducted to demonstrate the performances of the proposed method compared to other state-of-the-art supervised techniques and traditional simulation methods commonly used in previous sediment forecasting/reconstruction studies. To the best of our knowledge, this approach is the first semi-supervised method to reconstruct sediment data in the field. Though this study focuses on the MRB, sediment sparsity is a very common problem in other river systems worldwide. Thus, this method can be widely applied for them for more effective sediment reconstruction/prediction in general. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In recent years, humanity has experienced the effects of using unsustainable energy sources that pollute the environment while being inefficient. Most of the primary energy input used in energy conversion processes is lost in the form of heat. Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) have the potential to recover some of this wasted heat;however, their low energy conversion efficiency needs to be addressed. Previous literature has shown effective optimization of thermoelectric generation systems through statistical tools such as the Taguchi method that optimized all the parameters that affect the outcome of the system. To this date, no research has considered wind speed for convection heat transfer as one of the optimizable parameters. This study aims to optimize the operating conditions of commercially available TEGs that are cooled by forced convection simulating naturally occurring wind speeds and operate under low-quality waste heat temperatures to improve the TEG performance further. Two commercially available TEGs are optimized via the Taguchi method. The Taguchi method is implemented with three parameters and three levels, making an L9 orthogonal array. The objective function is the maximum output power. The optimized parameters are the hot side temperature, the heat sink size, and the wind airspeed. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used alongside the Taguchi orthogonal array for the statistical analysis of the results. The optimization results show that the hot side temperature is the most influential parameter to the output power. In addition, the change in the heat sink size also significantly influences the output power, whereas the impact of the wind speed is not as significant. In addition, interaction analysis between the parameters is performed. The Taguchi method yields satisfactory optimization results. Until the present moment, most of the medical records are only stored in hospitals. The hospital systems are still in Electronic Medical Records and haven’t developed into Personal Health Records yet to let people manage their own health records. If there is no medical record exchange between hospitals, it may cause a lot of medical resources waste and medical problems. The medical data cannot be exchanged smoothly because of different data standards, data inconsistency, and privacy of patient data. However, Blockchain technology can solve data consistency problems, privacy issues, and centralization problems. So use Blockchain technology to establish a PHR system that people can manage by themselves and use FHIR of National Medical Information Standard as the data format. People can share their PHR with doctors at any time and at any place, and doctors can give a more appropriate and accurate diagnosis. We use Ethereum’s private Blockchain. The system encrypts the PHR with an asymmetric key and then uses the Hash function to generate a hash value and write them into the block to ensure data consistency and security.
