Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) is a well-known amorphous thin film solid electrolyte that has been extensively studied in the last three decades. Despite the promises to pair with Li metal anode and various cathode materials, the presence of rigid substrate and LiPON's unique amorphous, air-sensitive nature set limitations to comprehensively understand its intrinsic properties for future development and applications. This work demonstrates a methodology to synthesize LiPON in a freestanding form that exhibits remarkable flexibility and a Young's modulus of ~33 GPa. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ss-NMR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results with unprecedented high signal-to-noise ratio could be obtained with such freestanding LiPON (FS-LiPON), revealing the Li/LiPON interface bonding environments quantitatively and a well-defined glass transition temperature for LiPON. Combining interfacial stress and a seeding layer, FS-LiPON demonstrates a uniform and fully dense Li metal deposition without the aid of external pressure. Such a FS-LiPON film offers new opportunities for fundamental study of LiPON material and associated interfaces, and provides perspectives for interface engineering in bulk solid-state battery. The herbal, tofu and fertilizer industries contribute considerable waste. Unprocessed waste disposal can cause environmental pollution. The waste contains chemical oxygen demands (COD), and organic substances can be degraded by Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) degradation method. The process of AOPs in this study used a combination of UV rays and ozone to produce hydroxyl radicals. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of UV, Ozone and UV-Ozone methods on COD degradation of herbal waste, tofu, and fertilizer. The result showed that the optimum degradation was obtained at experiment by using UV/ozone method. The COD degradation at tofu wastewater was from 1308 to 942 ppm, herbal wastewater was from 1011 to 414 ppm, and fertilizer wastewater was from 510 to 89 ppm by the use of 4 hours UV-Ozone method. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

It is widely recognized that exposure to X-rays during XPS analysis can decompose different materials, resulting in mass loss and changes in chemical composition. These effects are evident in the near-edge X-ray absorption structure spectra of dicarboxylic acid powders, posing a fundamental limit to sensitivity for surface chemical analysis. Understanding the chemistry and kinetics of radiation decomposition is necessary for the accuracy and validation of XPS analysis on dicarboxylic acids. Here we evaluate the impact of X-ray exposure on characterizing chemical changes in three different dicarboxylic acids with varying aliphatic carbon chain lengths. From this investigation we propose straightforward correlations relating the tendency for radiation-induced decomposition based on the chemical structure of the acids. We employed two types of spectra, those acquired with minimal interaction (snapshot) and high-resolution spectra obtained over an extended period, to show that normal analysis conditions are likely to degrade these type of materials. © 2023, The Authors. The research of pyrolytic thermodegradation of plastic wastes has received much attention. However, detailed combustion behavior and pyrolysis kinetics of microplastics are still absent in the current research. Understanding the characteristics and kinetics of microplastic pyrolysis is vital for designing and optimizing operational conditions. Adding silica to high-density polyethylene (HDPE) microplastics can effectively avoid the agglomeration of microplastics during pyrolysis, thereby better elucidating their thermodegradation. In the experiment, HDPE microplastics are mixed with SiO2 at different weight ratios (10 %, 20 %, 50 %, 70 %, and 100 %) to observe the dispersion effect on the microplastic thermodegradation. The results suggest that less than 20 % of PE in the mixture can retain microplastic pyrolysis characteristics. In combustion analysis, 10 % PE undergoes a faster thermo-oxidation reaction than pure HDPE. This study applies the independent parallel reaction (IPR) model and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to investigate microplastic pyrolysis kinetics. The pyrolysis activation energy is between 273.89 and 292.90 kJ‧mol−1, with fit quality high than 95 %, and rises with decreasing dispersion degree and increasing heating rate. This indicates that microplastic thermodegradation has low activation energy and is affected by heat transfer rate. The Py-GC/MS analysis indicates that up to 83.6 % of alkene and 52.3 % of products comprise high carbon numbers (17-Pentatriacontene and 1-Octatriacontene), respectively, suggesting the suppression of the secondary reaction of microplastics in the pyrolysis reaction. The calculated kinetic parameters are beneficial for understanding microplastic thermodegradation characteristics and can provide useful information for reactor design in industrial pyrolyzers or gasifiers. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

This study presents an investigation of chemical and physical characterization, green process analysis, techno-economic considerations, and carbon emissions for synthesizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) from plastic and can waste using microwave-assisted synthesis. The microwave-assisted synthesis proves to be more cost-effective, with a reduction in CO₂ emissions by up to 80%. The synthesized material (MIL-Mw-U) demonstrates excellent performance in methylene blue (MB) removal, achieving 98.41% removal, with 97.87% removal although the catalyst is used in the third cycle. The adsorption of methylene blue (MB) onto MIL-Mw-U achieved a maximum capacity of 295.26 mgg⁻¹ at pH 3 and decreased to 258.68 mgg⁻¹ at pH 11 due to OH⁻ competition. The Langmuir isotherm (R² = 0.9381) and pseudo-second-order kinetics (R² = 0.999) confirmed monolayer chemisorption as the dominant mechanism. This innovative approach supports circular economy principles by converting can and plastic bottle waste into functional material for dye removal, offering sustainable solutions for environmental challenges. © 2025 The Authors

Association between the type of dental prosthesis and the masticatory performance of institutionalized patients: A cross-sectional study.

This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the chewing ability of 97 institutionalized older adults and its relevance to their status of dentition and type of prosthetic rehabilitation. The participants were categorized according to their dental status. The chewing ability was determined by semi-quantitative evaluation of a colour-changeable chewing gum and by recording the personal perception of the participants on a similar scale. The colorimetric means of the participants was significantly lower than the perception means. One-third of the participants had at least one jaw restored with complete dentures, while 17% were restored with tooth-supported or implant-supported fixed partial dentures. Based on the colorimetric method, edentulous participants displayed significantly lower chewing performance compared to all other groups. Additionally, participants with at least one complete denture exhibited weaker chewing function than those with natural teeth or fixed partial dentures . The age and sex of the participants had no further impact on the results. As the institutionalized elderly seem to overestimate their chewing efficiency, the colour changeable chewing gum could be used in nursing homes, as a simple method to determine their real masticatory function status and improve their dental care.

Disasters are unexpected, sudden events that may cause monumental damages to both materials and human lives. Hence, the unpredictability and destruction that follow when a disaster happens to pose a dire challenge for researchers, scientists, and governments to find ways to effectively handle the situation and flow of information when such an event strikes. The Internet of Things (IoT) presents a solution that involves using one or more mobile devices connected over the network, thus making the transfer of data and information more effective and efficient. This paper presents a holistic analysis of the state-of-the-art IoT technologies which can answer the challenge posed above, in addition to the demand for efficiency, mobility, accuracy, as well as better communications between the command center and all actors involved in disaster operations. The applications of IoT have varied for many purposes. We divide those purposes into two broad strokes of pre-disaster management and post-disaster management IoT-aided systems. For pre-disaster management, the IoT-aided systems are mostly used to predict the possible disaster that might happen using sensors placed in strategic places. Finally, for post-disaster management, the IoT-aided systems aid in improving the effectiveness and accuracy of evacuation, relief, and victim-tracking efforts.

Air pollution, particularly ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution, poses a significant risk to public health, underscoring the importance of comprehending the long-term impact on health burden and expenditure at national and subnational levels. Therefore, this study aims to quantify the disease burden and healthcare expenditure associated with PM2.5 exposure in Taiwan and assess the potential benefits of reducing pollution levels. Using a comparative risk assessment framework that integrates an auto-aggressive integrated moving average model, we evaluated the avoidable burden of cardiopulmonary diseases (including ischemic heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and diabetes mellitus) and related healthcare expenditure under different air quality target scenarios, including status quo and target scenarios of 15, 10, and 5 μg/m3 reduction in PM2.5 concentration. Our findings indicate that reducing PM2.5 exposure has the potential to significantly alleviate the burden of multiple diseases. Comparing the estimated attributable disease burden and healthcare expenditure between reference and target scenarios from 2022 to 2050, the avoidable disability-adjusted life years were 0.61, 1.83, and 3.19 million for the 15, 10, and 5 μg/m3 target scenarios, respectively. Correspondingly, avoidable healthcare expenditure ranged from US$ 0.63 to 3.67 billion. We also highlighted the unequal allocation of resources and the need for policy interventions to address health disparities due to air pollution. Notably, in the 5 μg/m3 target scenario, Kaohsiung City stands to benefit the most, with 527,368 disability-adjusted life years avoided and US$ 0.53 billion saved from 2022 to 2050. Our findings suggest that adopting stricter emission targets can effectively reduce the health burden and associated healthcare expenditure in Taiwan. Quantitative positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), owing to the functional metabolic information and anatomical information of the human body that it presents, is useful to achieve accurate tumor delineation. However, manual annotation of a Volume Of Interest (VOI) is a labor-intensive and time-consuming task. In this study, we automatically segmented the Head and Neck (H&N) primary tumor in combined PET/CT images. Herein, we propose a convolutional neural network named Multimodal Spatial Attention Network (MSA-Net), supplemented with a Spatial Attention Module (SAM), which uses a PET image as an input. We evaluated this model on the MICCAI 2021 HEad and neCK TumOR (HECKTOR) segmentation challenge dataset. Our method delivered a competitive cross-validation efficiency, with Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) 0.757, precision 0.788, and recall 0.785. When we tested out method on test dataset, we achieved an average DSC and Hausdorff Distance at 95% (HD95) of 0.766 and 3.155 respectively. Disposal of Lapindo mud which carries nutrients and other dissolved organic matter into the Porong estuary, can cause the death of aquatic organisms due to high contamination and disturbance of aquatic ecosystems. The presence of phytoplankton can explain the current condition of the Porong Estuary. The purpose of this study was to report the water quality and plankton composition of the Porong estuary. The method used in this study is a descriptive survey method. Determination of sampling points using the appropriate sampling method at three stations. The research variables observed included water quality parameters such as temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), total organic matter (TOM), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), carbon dioxide (CO2), biological oxygen demand (BOD), nitrate, ammonia, orthophosphate, salinity and observations of phytoplankton in water bodies. The water quality values at stations 1, 2, and 3 respectively for TSS, pH, DO, BOD, TOM, nitrate, ammonia, orthophosphate shows a less than optimal value. Water conditions based on plankton abundance 24,678 cells/mL, 44,904 cells/mL, 18,312 cells/mL were eutrophic. The average of water quality parameters classified as less than optimal. Relatively, station 1 is the station with the best conditions between stations 2 and 3.
