The physical growth of Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds (PACs) to soot particles plays a significant role in understanding the chemistry of soot formation. Insights into the process can be gained from PACs’ free energy of dimerization landscape. However, because the infeasibly large space of possible PAC dimers cannot be exhaustively simulated, researchers must train machine learning models on a subset of data to impute the rest. To this end, we propose and assess an active learning approach to discovering the optimal PACs for training a machine learning model to predict PACs’ association and dissociation free energies. The comparison between active learning and random sampling showed that active learning has faster loss convergence, requiring fewer training samples to reach the same level of accuracy. The trained model accurately modeled unseen PACs and exhibited robustness against changes in the sampling space used to train the model. More broadly, this work shows how active learning can optimize the design and improve the understanding of more expensive models in specific domains.

A settlement is an important requirement for humans. Increasing the number of residents has encouraged additional needs for residential land while the amount of land has not increased. It is necessary to analyze the suitability of residential land to create decent and safe settlements from disasters. This study analyzes the suitability of residential land in the West Palu District based on the criteria of terrain slope, distance to the road network, the distance of educational facilities, the distance of health facilities, distance of trade facilities, and disaster vulnerability. The results of this study obtained a percentage of the area for unsuitability class 28.84%, marginally suitable 18.44%, suitable 34.93%, and more suitable 17.79%. © The Authors, published by EDP sciences, 2019.

Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the next generation gamma-ray observatory. It will consist of three different sizes of telescopes, with a collective improvement of about an order of magnitude in sensitivity, compared with the current generation gamma-ray telescopes. LargeSized Telescopes (LSTs) will be the most sensitive at energies from tens of GeV up to a few TeVs, and will be the best suited to observe gamma-ray sources such as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). The first Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1), inaugurated in 2018 and currently in commissioning phase, has accumulated more than one thousand hours of data to date. From 2020 to 2022, we have detected various gamma-ray sources, and prominent among them are several well-known AGN, like Mrk 421, Mrk 501, 1ES 1959+650, 1ES 0647+250, PG 1553+113, etc. We report on light curves and energy spectra reconstructed out of these observations down to energies of tens of GeV, which is very close to the energy threshold of LST-1. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

Recent studies have reported an increased risk of developing brain and neck tumors, as well as cataracts, in practitioners in interventional radiology (IR). Occupational radiation protection in IR has been a top concern for regulatory agencies and professional societies. To help minimize occupational radiation exposure in IR, we conceptualized a virtual reality (VR) based radiation safety training system to help operators understand complex radiation fields and to avoid high radiation areas through game-like interactive simulations. The preliminary development of the system has yielded results suggesting that the training system can calculate and report the radiation exposure after each training session based on a database precalculated from computational phantoms and Monte Carlo simulations and the position information provided in real-time by the MS Hololens headset worn by trainee. In addition, real-time dose rate and cumulative dose will be displayed to the trainee by MS Hololens to help them adjust their practice. This paper presents the conceptual design of the overall hardware and software design, as well as preliminary results to combine MS HoloLens headset and complex 3D X-ray field spatial distribution data to create a mixed reality environment for safety training purpose in IR. The integrity of reactor internal components made of austenitic stainless steel welds with a duplex structure can potentially be affected by thermal aging and/or neutron irradiation induced embrittlement. There have not been sufficient studies on the long-term service performance of SS welds in light water reactors. In this study, thermal aging was performed at 400 °C for up to 2220 h on a 308L weld, and the irradiation was conducted in the Halden reactor at ~315 °C to 0.08 dpa (5.6 × 1019 n/cm2, E > 1 meV). The microstructural evolution of the ferrite phase was characterized using atom probe tomography (APT) and auxiliary transmission electron microscope studies. Spinodal decomposition and Ni-Mn-Si solute clusters were observed in both the thermally aged and neutron irradiated 308L welds. As compared with thermal aging, low dose neutron irradiation induced similar spinodal decomposition with slightly larger concentration wavelength and amplitude. The solute clusters in irradiated ferrite phase also show a larger mean size, a wider size distribution, but a lower number density as compared with those in thermally aged ferrite phase. In addition, the neutron irradiation significantly promotes segregation of trace elements, particularly phosphorus, at the Ni-Mn-Si solute clusters. © 2019, The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society.

Soil erosion is one of the most serious degradation problems in the world, so in Indonesia. The average level of global soil erosion ranges from 12-15 Ton/ha/yr, or it can be said that there is a surface soil loss of 0.90-0.95 mm of land. While the watershed in Indonesia is 458 in which 60 are critically heavy, 222 critical and 176 potentially critical. An action is needed to reduce erosion rates which is one of the causes of damage to the watershed. Soil erosion modeling is a method used in estimating the amount of soil erosion that occurs in an area. Various models of soil erosion are developed with the aim of producing precise erosion estimates. This study will discuss soil erosion modeling (definition, classification of models and proceed) and a review of erosion assessment models that are widely used in Indonesia (USLE, MUSLE, RUSLE, and SWAT). By knowing each erosion estimation model, hope can be able to choose the right model according to the study to be conducted. © The Authors, published by EDP sciences, 2019.

Solar dryer is typically used for agricultural purposes in Indonesia. There are many economically important crops requiring storage or drying under particular environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. High temperatures inside solar dryer prevents the growth of microorganism, and quickly reduce moisture content from the substance. A hybrid solar dryer is generally considered to provide the most optimum solution, however solar panels may be expensive and they still only provide heat or energy in the daytime. Hence, we propose here a new kind of hybrid solar dryer for 24/7 optimum conditions for crops - enabled by recent advances in energy technologies as well as Industry 4.0. This study aims to create an efficient, affordable and a self-sufficient intelligent energy system that will be applied to agriculture for storage or drying purposes by measuring the energy needs for the optimal drying system. Therefore, it is crucial to estimate and assess the critical energy needs for such new systems in order to optimize and design such smart solar dryer (SSD) system especially for Indonesia's agricultural needs. We use design experience of our industry partner (PT Impack Pratama Industri, Indonesia) who has been working extensively on such solar dryer dome (SDD) based on polycarbonate material (only solar irradiation, no other technologies) and theoretical framework based on first principles in thermodynamics to estimate and assess critical energy needs for such dome with all the smart technologies. The calculation was performed based on Mollier diagram and the result still a rough estimation of energy required.

Membrane fouling is one of the main drawbacks in membrane-based microalgae harvesting. This study assessed the tilted panel to enhance filtration performance of Spirulina sp. broth. The influences of the operating parameters including the tilting angle, aeration rate and membrane materials on filtration performance and energy consumption were evaluated. Results showed that the system was effective and energy-efficient for membrane fouling control. The permeability peaked at a tilting of 45° thanks to combination of aeration and panel tilting. The microfiltration performed better than the ultrafiltration membrane due to the effective impact of air bubbles for foulant scouring that maximized the membrane intrinsic property. Small aeration rate of 1.0 L/min offered a high plateau permeability of 540 L/(m2·hr·bar) in which reversible fouling almost fully absent. The high permeability could be achieved under a low energy input of 0.2 kWh/m3. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

The crystal structure of the U3Si2 line compound in the U-Si system was investigated as a function of temperature from room temperature to 1373 K using high temperature neutron time-of-flight diffraction on the High-pressure Pressure/preferred Preferred Orientation (HIPPO) diffractometer at the Los Alamos Neutron science Center (LANSCE). The U-Si system is actively researched due to its promise as an accident tolerant nuclear fuel. The simultaneous Rietveld refinement of five histograms from the five HIPPO detector rings provided fundamental datasets for the lattice parameters, anisotropic atomic displacement parameters, and atomic positions as a function of temperature. To explore the possibility of a homogeneity range, two samples were analyzed, stoichiometric U3Si2.00 and a hyperstoichiometric U3Si2.01. While minor differences in the thermal expansion anisotropic atomic displacement parameters between the two samples were observed, over the entire investigated temperature range no additional phases were observed. However, significant differences in the thermal expansion behavior were identified between the two compositions that warrant future investigations.
