Axion-like particles (ALPs) are pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons that emerge in various theories beyond the standard model. These particles can interact with high-energy photons in external magnetic fields, influencing the observed gamma-ray spectrum. This study analyzes 41.3 hrs of observational data from the Perseus Galaxy Cluster collected with the MAGIC telescopes. We focused on the spectra the radio galaxy in the center of the cluster: NGC 1275. By modeling the magnetic field surrounding this target, we searched for spectral indications of ALP presence. Despite finding no statistical evidence of ALP signatures, we were able to exclude ALP models in the sub-micro electronvolt range. Our analysis improved upon previous work by calculating the full likelihood and statistical coverage for all considered models across the parameter space. Consequently, we achieved the most stringent limits to date for ALP masses around 50 neV, with cross sections down to gaγ = 3 × 10−12 GeV−1 Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In recent years, a new generation of optical intensity interferometers has emerged, leveraging the existing infrastructure of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The MAGIC telescopes host the MAGIC-SII system (Stellar Intensity Interferometer), implemented to investigate the feasibility and potential of this technique on IACTs. After the first successful measurements in 2019, the system was upgraded and now features a real-time, dead-time-free, 4-channel, GPU-based correlator. These hardware modifications allow seamless transitions between MAGIC’s standard very-high-energy gamma-ray observations and optical interferometry measurements within seconds. We establish the feasibility and potential of employing IACTs as competitive optical Intensity Interferometers with minimal hardware adjustments. The measurement of a total of 22 stellar diameters are reported, 9 corresponding to reference stars with previous comparable measurements, and 13 with no prior measurements. A prospective implementation involving telescopes from the forthcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory’s northern hemisphere array, such as the first prototype of its Large-Sized Telescopes, LST-1, is technically viable. This integration would significantly enhance the sensitivity of the current system and broaden the UV-plane coverage. This advancement would enable the system to achieve competitive sensitivity with the current generation of long-baseline optical interferometers over blue wavelengths. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. The BL Lacertae object VER J0521+211 underwent a notable flaring episode in February 2020. A short-term monitoring campaign, led by the MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov) collaboration, covering a wide energy range from radio to very-high-energy (VHE, 100 GeV 100 TeV). While the photon component, generated via decay of neutral pions, is not directly observable as it is subject to intense pair production (and therefore extinction) through interactions with the cosmic microwave background photons, neutrino detectors (e.g. IceCube) can probe the predicted neutrino component. Finally, the analysis of the gamma-ray spectra, as observed by MAGIC and the Fermi-LAT telescopes, yielded a conservative 95% confidence upper limit of z ≤ 0.244 for the redshift of this blazar. Intertrochanteric fracture visualization and analysis using a map projection technique

Understanding intertrochanteric fracture distribution is an important topic in orthopadics due to its high morbidity and mortality. The intertrochanteric fracture can contain high dimensional information including complicated 3D fracture lines, which often make it difficult to visualize or to obtain valuable statistics for clinical diagnosis and prognosis applications. This paper proposed a map projection technique to map the high dimensional information into a 2D parametric space. This method can preserve the 3D proximal femur surface and structure while visualizing the entire fracture line with a single plot/view. Using this method and a standardization technique, a total of 100 patients with different ages and genders are studied based on the original radiographs acquired by CT scan. The comparison shows that the proposed map projection representation is more efficient and rich in information visualization than the conventional heat map technique. Using the proposed method, a fracture probability can be obtained at any location in the 2D parametric space, from which the most probable fracture region can be accurately identified. The study shows that age and gender have significant influences on intertrochanteric fracture frequency and fracture line distribution. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Context: Several new ultrahigh-energy (UHE) gamma-ray sources have recently been discovered by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) collaboration. These represent a step forward in the search for the so-called Galactic PeVatrons, the enigmatic sources of the Galactic cosmic rays up to PeV energies. However, it has been shown that multi-TeV gamma-ray emission does not necessarily prove the existence of a hadronic accelerator in the source;indeed this emission could also be explained as inverse Compton scattering from electrons in a radiation-dominated environment. A clear distinction between the two major emission mechanisms would only be made possible by taking into account multi-wavelength data and detailed morphology of the source. Aims: We aim to understand the nature of the unidentified source LHAASO J2108+5157, which is one of the few known UHE sources with no very high-energy (VHE) counterpart. Methods: We observed LHAASO J2108+5157 in the X-ray band with XMM-Newton in 2021 for a total of 3.8 hours and at TeV energies with the Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1), yielding 49 hours of good-quality data. In addition, we analyzed 12 years of Fermi-LAT data, to better constrain emission of its high-energy (HE) counterpart 4FGL J2108.0+5155. We used naima and jetset software packages to examine the leptonic and hadronic scenario of the multi-wavelength emission of the source. Results: We found an excess (3.7σ) in the LST-1 data at energies E > 3 TeV. Further analysis of the whole LST-1 energy range, assuming a point-like source, resulted in a hint (2.2σ) of hard emission, which can be described with a single power law with a photon index of Γ = 1.6 ± 0.2 the range of 0.3 − 100 TeV. We did not find any significant extended emission that could be related to a supernova remnant (SNR) or pulsar wind nebula (PWN) in the XMM-Newton data, which puts strong constraints on possible synchrotron emission of relativistic electrons. Mordenite-type zeolites were prepared via hydrothermal method using silica gel and sodium aluminate as Si and Al sources respectively. The temperature was varied from 150 °C up to 190 °C to determine the minimum temperature to obtain crystalline mordenite using a 23 mL Teflon-lined stainless-steel autoclave. The samples were characterized using XRD, FTIR and SEM. With the given experimental conditions, mordenite-type zeolites with good crystallinity and excellent purity were produced at 190 °C. Amorphous materials with notable peaks that correspond to mordenite planes were produced at 170 °C. The sample produced at 150°C was completely amorphous. FTIR revealed that all the three samples contain bands associated to aluminosilicate vibrational groups. However, a significant decrease in the intensities of vibration bands associated to hydroxyl (HO−) stretching and water bending were observed as the temperature is decreased. From the SEM, the sample treated at 190°C was composed of particles with strikingly linear edges having an average grain size of ~38.0 µm. Most particles are hexagonal in shape. Particle components of the samples synthesized at 170 °C and 150 °C have irregular sizes and shapes.

This paper describes a proof of concept for X-ray backscatter imaging beyond its common 2D radiograph capabilities by utilizing energy discrimination on detectors in an X-ray backscatter system. This study is a direct improvement over previous works, which required a separate scan for each depth being imaged;the current study achieves depth sensitive images with just a single scan. This technique is applicable to images generated from materials found in both medical and non-destructive testing environments. The system consists of a collimated pencil-beam of radiation surrounded by detectors that measure the fluence of backscattered photons coming from the object under investigation. Since X-ray tubes emit a spectra of radiation and the penetration depth of a photon is energy dependent, detectors using energy discrimination will measure signals generated from different depths within the object. The stochastic radiation transport code MCNP6 was used to simulate and test this concept. The simulated backscatter system used a 5 mm pencil-beam surrounded by four 5 cm diameter detectors, with the photon spectra modeled after a 150 kVp lead target X-ray tube. The system raster scanned over a phantom made of tissue that had the letters U and F embedded 6 cm and 8 cm deep, respectively. The letter U was made of air while the letter F was made of compact bone. The measured signals were discriminated into two energy groups, one consisting of photons less than 90 keV and the other anything above it. The two resulting images clearly proved the depth sensitive imaging capability, with the lower energies detected only showing the letter U, while the higher energies showed both the letters U and F. This technique should easily be applicable to industrial materials, though higher interrogation energies are likely needed.

The first measurements of proton emission accompanied by neutron emission in the electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) of Pb208 nuclei in the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. The EMD protons and neutrons emitted at very forward rapidities are detected by the proton and neutron zero degree calorimeters of the ALICE experiment. The emission cross sections of zero, one, two, and three protons accompanied by at least one neutron were measured in ultraperipheral Pb208−Pb208 collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=5.02TeV. The 0p and 3p cross sections are described by the RELDIS model within their measurement uncertainties, while the 1p and 2p cross sections are underestimated by the model by 17–25%. According to this model, these 0p, 1p, 2p, and 3p cross sections are associated, respectively, with the production of various isotopes of Pb, Tl, Hg, and Au in the EMD of Pb208. The cross sections of the emission of a single proton accompanied by the emission of one, two, or three neutrons in EMD were also measured. The data are significantly overestimated by the RELDIS model, which predicts that the (1p,1n), (1p,2n), and (1p,3n) cross sections are very similar to the cross sections for the production of the thallium isotopes Tl206,205,204.

Adsorption uptake of Philippine natural zeolite for Zn2+ ions in aqueous solution

The Philippine natural zeolite (PNZ) was characterized and subjected to Zn2+ adsorption tests in aqueous solutions to determine its adsorption uptake and to understand its adsorption behaviour. The PNZ was characterized using XRD, SEM, BET-analysis and TG-DTA. XRD showed significant peaks indexed to natural mordenite-type zeolite along with other natural zeolites and minerals. SEM micrographs revealed a rough and corrugated surface morphology of the sample. BET physisorption analysis showed a surface area of 222.63 m2/g. From the analytical tests report given by the supplier, the Si/Al ratio (SAR) was computed to be equal to 4.29 based on the silica and alumina content of the PNZ. Adsorption kinetic and thermodynamic studies were done to determine the adsorption mechanism and adsorption capacity of PNZ for Zn2+ ions in aqueous solution. From the adsorption kinetic curve, the PNZ attained chemical equilibrium after 50 min. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model was the most applicable kinetic model providing the highest correlation with the data. Langmuir model better described the adsorption isotherm of the PNZ than Freundlich model. The theoretical maximum cation exchange capacity of PNZ was computed as 27.17 mg Zn2+/g according to the Langmuir model.

Cytokines mediate and control immune and inflammatory responses. Complex interactions exist between cytokines, inflammation and the adaptive responses in maintaining homeostasis, health, and well being. On-demand, local delivery of anti-inflammatory drug molecules to target tissues provides a means for effective drug dosing while reducing the adverse effects of systemic drug delivery. This work demonstrates a proof-of-concept theranostic approach for inflammation based on analyte-kissing induced signaling, whereby a drug (in this report, aspirin) can be released upon detection of a target level of a proinfammatory cytokine(i.e. Interferon-γ (IFN-γ)) in real time. The structure-switching aptamer based biosensor described here is capable of quantitatively and dynamically detecting IFN-γ both in vitro and in vivo with a sensitivity of 10 pg mL-1. Moreover, the released aspirin triggered by the inflammatory cytokine IFN-γ is able to inhibit inflammation in the inflammatory rat model, and the releasing of aspirin can be quantitatively controlled. Herein research provides a novel and promising strategy for in vivo detection of proinflammatory cytokines and the subsequent therapeutic delivery of anti-inflammatory molecules. This universal theranostic platform is expected to achieve great potentials on personalized medicine towards treatment of various of diseases and health conditions. © 2019, The Authors.
