physics is one of the subjects that are considered difficult, by most high school students taking the science stream in Indonesia. Tthere are many students who have difficulty in learning this subject. Moreover, physics is one of the important subject when students want to continue their education to first tier universities in *** overcome this problem, this paper presents a theory that can be used by Guidance and Counseling teachers in overcoming the difficulties learning physics. The theory developed in this study can be applied by the counsellor in helping the learning difficulties of the students. This theory was developed with the literature study method which was analyzed using analytical descriptive techniques with an inductive approach. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

The scientific process is conducted through investigative activities ranging from simple investigations of the surrounding nature to more complicated investigations to predict natural phenomena and solve various problems. Science learning should be carried out with a scientific approach that emphasizes scientific processes in which interactions with technology, the environment, and other sciences fields could not be avoided. Science learning through a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education approach is among approaches that are world-widely suggested, including in Indonesia, as can be seen in the national curriculum focal points. Unfortunately, as far as our knowledge is concerned, there is no such guide for teachers in implementing STEM education, including suggestions on the real issues and topics of STEM projects related to those issues. In this paper, based on a study of the content of the physics curriculum at the high school level, we propose real problems related to physics contents and possible STEM project topics derived from these fundamental problems. We emphasize topics that are technologically simple and easy to implement nationally, including in remote areas, but pedagogically contain rich aspects of learning. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Analysis of sperm quality is still one of the most important tools for evaluating a man's fertility. Sperm quality includes several aspects including motility and viability. Mice (Mus musculus) are usually used as experimental animals because the reproductive system is almost the same as human. The purpose of this study is to determine the motility, viability, and type of charge of sperm mice (Mus muculus) through the study of exposure electric fields in an ex vivo condition. Observations were made in the time At for sperm without influence and influenced by an electric field. Mice sperm is diluted with a solution of Phosphate Buffered Saline (PBS). The liquid is inserted into the hemocytometer and then placed between two iron plates connected with a DC voltage source. The distance between the two plates d = 7.0 cm. The magnitude of the voltage used is Δv = 0 (control) and Δv = 12.5 V. Sperm movement was observed using a fluorescence microscope then recorded using NIS Elements software. Then the movement of sperm is analyzed using Tracker software. Sperm without an electric field (Δv = 0) has a viability of 60 minutes longer than sperm affected by an electric field (ΔV = 12.5 V) which has a viability of 30 minutes. The sperms move almost randomly in all directions without the influence of the electric field but tend to move to a positive plate when under the influence of the electric field. Based on the direction of the movement of mice sperm, the sperm is thought to be negatively charged. From the results of this study, it was found that the fast zig-zag motion had a velocity v > 37 μm/s. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

A simple determination of air drag using video tracker and modifiable projectile launcher

The air drag constant for different nose shapes of projectiles is determined with the help of a simple method combining a projectile launcher, video tracking technique and spreadsheet computer code for simulating the motion. A projectile launcher with low-cost components is developed to study air drag in projectile motion. The launcher is based on air pressure and is easy to modify for different projectile types. The projectile motion is tracked using a video camera connected to a computer. The trajectory of the motion is then simulated with the help of the spreadsheet, and the air drag constant is adjusted to fit the observed data. The minimum error is used as the criteria for the best fitted air drag constant. Three types of projectiles, i.e.: conical, round, and cylindrical shape, are used in this experiment. The obtained air drag constants are in the range of 0.025-0.134. The conical shape has the lowest air drag constant as predicted. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Segmented self-siphon: Experiments and simulations

Observation of fluid flow in a segmented self-siphon has been conducted experimentally and a model using molecular dynamics method is used to study the phenomenon in simulation. Influence of number of parts used in vertical straight segments observed in the simulation is nearly similar to the result observed in experiment. Mismatch error between experiment and simulation results, in predicting whether water can flow in a configuration of segmented a self-siphon or not, has been found about 10.4 %. During the flow through the self-siphon water velocity decreases, especially in the semi-circle bends.

Implementing Project-based Learning in making a weight meter

Project-based learning (PjBL) is an activity, which can be done individually or in groups, that goes on over a period of time and its objective can be a product, presentation, or performance. It can make students develop their skills and become more engaged in learning because they can solve problems that are met in real life through a project. The project was a weight meter using a d.c. deflection-type bridge circuit and a VU meter, which was realized by a group of three students (the first three authors). We were of the 2nd year of undergraduate physics program that are taking the Measurement and Data Processing Techniques course in the period of January to April 2015. We worked together with our lecturer and tutor as our advisers. In making the weight meter, we have done the following roles in PjBL: 1. Planning the project and setting a timeline, 2. Doing research, 3. Creating first draft, 4. Rewriting the project report, and 5. Submitting the project. Under the guidance of timeline, the project has been completed timely. A force sensing resistor (FSR) sensor was employed to convert a body mass to resistance of the bridge circuit and the VU meter was modified to be a display of the weight meter. The weight meter could be used to measure a body mass up to 5 kg.

It is clear that the quality of education is directly related to the quality of teachers and the teaching methods. One of the teaching methods that can improve the quality of education is research-based learning (RBL) method. In this method, students act as the center of learning while teachers become the guides that provide direction and advice. RBL is a learning method that combines cooperative learning, problem solving, authentic learning, contextual case study and inquiry approach discovery. The main goal of this method is to construct a student that can think critically, analyze and evaluate problems, and find a new science from these problems (learning by doing). In this paper, RBL is used to improve the understanding about measurement using deflection-type Bridge that is implemented in the determination of ground water changes. In general, there are three stages that have been done. Firstly the exposure stage, then the experience stage and lastly the capstone stage. The exposure stage aims to increase the knowledge and the comprehension of student about the topic through understanding the basics concepts, reviewing the literature and others. The understanding gained in the exposure stage is being used for application and analysis at the experience stage. While the final stage is the publication of research results both verbally and in writing. Based on the steps that have been conducted, it can be showed that deflection-type Bridge can be utilized in soil moisture meter.

Realizing a Deflection-type D.C. Bridge-based Thermometer under Project-based Learning Approach

In addition to conventional learning, project-based learning (PBL) helps students developing skills and becoming more engaged in learning as they have a chance to solve real life problems of actual projects. As the name suggests, PBL is a model that organizes learning around projects. In this paper, the project that will be completed by a group of three students is about making a water temperature measuring instrument using a simple deflection-type d.c. bridge circuit. The project was done in the period of January to April 2015 when they was taking the Measurement and Data Processing Techniques, which is a compulsory course in the fourth semester of undergraduate program in Department of physics at Institut Teknologi Bandung. With the help of a lecturer and a tutor as facilitators, they have followed this series of steps: 1. Start with a driving question, a problem to be solved, 2. Exploring the driving question by participating in authentic, situated inquiry, 3. Engaging collaborative activities with lecturer and tutor to find solutions to the driving question, 4. Scaffolding with learning technologies that help students participating in activities normally beyond their ability, and 5. Creating a set of tangible products that address the driving question. With this series of steps, the students have become easier to understand the lectures that have been given and the instrument has been realized to measure the temperature of water properly. When realizing the project under the PBL method, we learned other materials beside that have been taught in the course. Due to this project, we have had more skills like designing and soldering as well as problem-solving, teamwork, critical thinking, synthesis and analysis.
