An extended finite element method (XFEM) for fracture problem within the finite element software ABAQUS is adopted in order to investigate the mechanical properties and fracture behaviour of RPC material. The RPC materials observed are plain RPC of 0% and steel fiber RPC (SFRPC) of 2% volume fraction. Single edge notch three-point bending (TPB) tests of RPC materials are performed. The mechanical properties of RPC with respect to single edge notch TPB test, i.e. tensile stress, CMOD, and fracture energy obtained from experiment are then compared to those obtained from numerical analysis. A good agreement is observed between the experimental and numerical results. © 2020 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

Electro-active shape memory composites have recently gained interest for their ability to return to predefined shapes through Joule heating, offering more controllable alternatives to conventional thermal activation. However, most existing research is limited to small-scale applications. This study explores the integration of continuous natural fiber-reinforced epoxy-based shape memory polymer biocomposites (SMPBCs) with embedded resistance heating wires for mechanically enhanced, electro-activated self-shaping architectural applications. SMPBC properties were characterised through dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile testing across different fiber orientations. The results emphasise the critical influence of fiber design in optimising mechanical and thermomechanical properties while achieving efficient shape memory behaviour. Guided by structural simulations, continuous flax fibers and Nichrome wires were strategically embedded within SMPBCs to develop an efficient, scalable actuation system. Rigid-folding and curved-folding prototypes were investigated for their fabrication viability and functionality in multifunctional applications. The rigid-folding prototype achieved a 70 % shape recovery ratio (R r ) and 99 % shape fixity (R f ) using 12 V. A full-scale curved-folding prototype, activated at 100 V, demonstrated 99 %-83 % R r for façade applications, while the furniture application reached 94 %, both maintaining 99 % Rf. These findings highlight the potential of Joule-heated SMPBCs for self-actuating architectural components, paving the way for more responsive, adaptable, and energy-efficient design solutions.

Experimental study on the use of steel-decks for prefabricated reinforced concrete beams

This paper presents an experimental study on the use of steel-decks for concrete beams. The purpose of this research is to determine the beam's capacity, and the loaddisplacement relationships due to the use of steel-decks. The failure mechanism was also studied, since the behavior differs significantly from conventional concrete members. For analysis purposes, two beam prototypes with steel-decks (GB1 and GB2), and two conventional concrete beams having the exact same material properties and dimensions (NB1 and NB2) functioning as control elements, were tested. Load was applied by a two-point loading system, creating a pure bending state. To monitor vertical deflections, two LVDTs were used. All precision instruments were connected to a data logger, and a computer. The results showed that the beams GB had a significant ultimate moment capacity increase, which is 2,3 times the control element NB. The main enhancement contribution is originated from the presence of the bottom steel-deck, which due to bonding to the concrete, functioned as additional tensile reinforcement. The deck also increased the member's ductility performance by 1.3 times. Specimen GB2 underwent bond loss in the transition zone between the deck and the concrete, reducing the initial stiffness of the member.

In EMTP, it is very hard to simulate a vertically arranged cable, since its surge impedance gradually changes with the distance from the ground to a top point. In the past, some researches about surge impedances and responses of vertical conductor (for example transmission tower, concrete pole and so on.) have been carried out, these researches are being continued now. However, there is no model of vertical co-axial cable in EMTP. In order to analyze surge voltage arisen on the electrical system, approach of method for treating this model in EMTP is required. In this paper, experiments of surge impedance and response on vertical cable, method of treating for vertical co-axial cable in EMTP and accuracy confirmed as compared result of this model with analysis result of VSTL Rev. (Virtual Surge Test Lab. rev.) which is constructed under FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) method, are reported. © 2016 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

The Behavior of Graded Concrete, an Experimental Study

In structural analysis, a concrete element is assumed homogeneous in terms of strength and physical properties throughout the entire section or member. In reality, concrete is a composite material composed of mortar matrix and coarse aggregates. The actual composition of a member is therefore less likely to be uniform along its height. The presence of coarse aggregates will result in a higher density, reaching the extreme lower layers of the member, leading to a disparity in strength, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio. Other factors influencing this phenomenon are bleeding, and initial cracking due to the hydration heat on the exposed surfaces. However, if the non-homogeneities of these concrete properties can be observed, and further controlled and adjusted properly, the potential for a design optimization could be aimed. This study was performed to produce intentionally, and further analyze, the actual behaviors of a concrete member with a gradation in concrete compressive strength. The compressive strength of the test specimens ranged from 20 MPa to 60 MPa. The cylindrical specimens sized 100 x 200 millimeters were tested under uniaxial compression, and the strains in different layers were recorded, as the load was increased. The developed method and equipment was proven excellent in artificially creating a graded concrete specimen. The resulting specimens were visually inspected and tested using a rebound hammer to study the gradation of the material in the transition zone between the two different types of concrete strength mixes. The resulting concrete is negatively influenced by the disparity between the two concrete strengths since the cracking and fracture of the lower concrete strength part will signature the strength of the overall graded material. Experimental Study of Steel-fiber Reinforced Concrete Beams with Confinement

This paper presents an experimental study to the effectiveness of steel-fiber concrete in combination with the confinement in the compression zone of a flexural member. A range of stirrup configurations functioning as confining elements, were evaluated. The study was aimed to analyze the effect of these confining reinforcement variations to the load carrying capacity and cracking moment of a simply supported beam loaded in pure bending. Additionally, steel-fibers were added to the concrete mix to improve the mechanical properties of the material. Five steel-fiber beams were evaluated, having a variation in confining reinforcement configurations. The variations in confining reinforcements were especially, but not exclusively, concentrated in the compression zone of the beam. To monitor the influence of the steel-fibers, a controlling element without the use of steel-fiber (conventional concrete) was also produced, and tested in the laboratory. The beam test set up was designed to undergo a state of pure bending by the use of a two-point loading system. The testing methodology under increasing monotonic loading was deformation controlled. The results showed that the variation in configuration of the confining reinforcement in the compression zone played an important role to the ultimate moment capacity of the beam. The experiments also demonstrated that the type of confinement has major impact to the cracking moment of the element. The addition of steel-fibers influenced the cracking moment positively.

Due to the complexity of contemporary practice, top-tier structural engineering firms hold the master's degree as the minimum level of education for new hires. In addition, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recommends a master's degree or the equivalent of 30 credits beyond a bachelor's degree as part of the minimum body of knowledge for licensed professional engineers. Finally, students whose end goal is a career in professional practice have indicated a preference for graduate programs focused on design knowledge essential for the advancement of structural engineering practice. These needs provided the opportunity for the creation of a new professional master's program in structural engineering at Lehigh University. Launched in summer 2008, the program is led by a full-time professor of practice with industry design experience and guided by an executive advisory board, composed of representatives from all areas of the building design and construction profession. The hallmark of the 30-credit, 10-month program is a 9-credit, 3-course design project sequence in which student teams design a real-world structure from initial concept to final construction documents. An individual project assignment, as well as technical elective courses, allows students to tailor the program to their unique interests and career goals. A laboratory class provides hands-on learning of structural behavior. Interaction with industry leaders through seminars, field trips, and externships provides students ample opportunity to network with professionals and gain an understanding of their chosen industry. A Finite Element Approach to the Möhr-Coulomb and Kupfer-Hilsdorf-Rusch Concrete Failure Criteria in Tension

Over the years, the failure envelope of plain concrete has been studied and constructed by various researchers. Since concrete is a non-homogeneous material, its behavior under bi-axial stresses is not as straight forward as steel. Also, the assumption that concrete exhibits an isotropic behavior under loading is not completely true since the failure mode due to tension and compression differs significantly. This research work looked into the correctness of the two most known failure criteria; the Mӧhr-Coulomb (MC) and the Kupfer-Hilsdorf-Rusch (KHR) envelope. In reaching the goal, a Finite Element Model (FEM) was constructed, and a plain concrete beam subjected to flexure was run through the program for a range of concrete compressions strengths. To validate the FEM program, the resulting load-displacement curves were calibrated to experimentally tested specimens. The load-displacement response and the stress-strain behavior at the beam’s center-line up till failure, was recorded for analyze purposes. This research work was conducted at the structural and Material Laboratory, Diponegoro University in Semarang, Indonesia.

Study the Effect of Adding Nano Fly Ash and Nano Lime to Compressive Strength of Mortar

This research is aimed to investigating the possibility of substituting cement with fly ash. Fly ash is a waste product of the coal burning process. Previous studies showed that the substitution of 20% - 40% in cement weight by fly ash increases the 60 days compressive strength of mortar. Fly ash contributes to the compressive strength because the content of silica oxide reacts with the free lime to enhance the cement hydration process while on the other hand provides a better density by acting as filler. Besides looking into the increases of fly ash percentage below the 20%, the influence of addition ofactive lime is also studied. The content of silica oxide will react with the free lime hydration products of cement and active lime added. In this study, applying the nano-technology to modify the size of the fly ash and lime in conducted. The procedure will result in nano-fly ash andnano-lime particles. The cement-to-nanofly ash ratio is 1:12.24 and nano lime-to-nano fly ash ratio is 1:1.11. This research includes the study of the effect of nano fly ash and lime percentage in the mortar, ranges from 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10%, 12.5% to 15% to the control specimen. Cement-to-sand proportion is 1 to 1.70 with water-cement-ratio 0.49. 50 × 50 × 50 mm specimens are tested to obtain their compression strength at the age of 7 days.

Survey of reduced workload and crewing strategies for ocean patrol vessels

He has applied most of his 24 years of experience in the application of human engineering technology to maritime systems. Mr. Baker has directed much of Carlow's efforts to reduce ship workload and to improve human performance and maritime safety through application of human factors methods and data. He is a Certified Industrial Ergonomist (CIE) as well as a Certified Human Factors Engineering Professional (CHFEP). Both certifications were granted by Oxford Research where Mr. Baker also serves as an Advisory Board member. Russell D. Krull P.E. is a senior engineer with A&T/Proteus Engineering with more than 18 years of experi-ence in marine engineering naval architecture and program management including 16 years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. Recent experience includes advanced ship design studies engineering software development technical support for the USMC Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle propulsion systems analyses ship structural engineering and cargo handling systems engineering. Mr. Krull has an M.S.E. in naval architecture and marine engineering and an M.S.E. in industrial and operations engineering from University of Michigan and a B.S. in ocean engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Capt. Glenn L. Snyder USCG. Regrettably since this paper was originally written Capt. Snyder has passed away. At the time of his death he was an operations specialist assigned to the Coast Guard's Deepwater Capabilities Replacement Project as Chief of Human Systems Integration. He served as commanding officer of the patrol boat Cape George (WPB-95306) the icebreaking tug Biscayne Bay (WTGB-104) and the cutter Legare (WMEC-911). A 1975 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Capt. Snyder held an M.A. in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College and an M.A. in international relations from Salve Regina College. In addition he was a 1998 fellow of the Foreign Service

The U.S. Coast Guard is in the concept exploration phase of its Integrated Deepwater System (IDS) acquisition project. This project will define the next generation of surface, air and command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) assets used to perform the Coast Guard's missions in the IDS environment (>50 NM off the U. S. coastline). As part of early technology investigations, the needs exist to: (1) analyze the workload requirements of the IDS, (2) identify alternative means to perform ship's work, and (3) optimize ship manning consistent with ship workload, performance criteria, and the available tools and equipment aboard. To reduce shipboard work requires an understanding of the mission and support requirements placed on the vessel and crew, how these requirements are currently met, and how requirements might otherwise be met to reduce workload and crew size. This study examined currently implemented workload and manpower reducing approaches of commercial maritime fleets, U.S. and foreign navies, and foreign coastguards. These approaches were analyzed according to evaluation criteria approved by the IDS acquisition project team. From this, strategies for shipboard work reduction that may be considered for adoption by the IDS were identified and analyzed according to performance and costs factors. Ten workload-reducing strategies were identified: damage control, bridge, multiple crewing, engineering, risk acceptance, modularity, deck, enabling technologies, ship/personnel readiness, and operability and maintainability.
