Emerging Trends in design Management Education in the UK

作者： Busayawan Lam Youngok Choi A senior lecturer and a course director for Brunel University's master's program in design strategy and innovation and its master's program in design and branding strategy. She was trained in industrial design and practiced as a product designer in a small‐to‐medium‐size exporting company in Thailand. She later obtained research degrees in design management. Lam has many years of experience studying user requirements ascertaining design trends and recommending strategic design directions for a variety of organizations ranging from an equipment producer for domestic general hospitals to a global electronics company. Her current research interests include co‐design community‐led design and open innovation. A senior lecturer in the College of Engineering Design and Physical Sciences at Brunel University and a design researcher specializing in design policy and design management. The strategic use of design underpins much of her research activities. She has been involved in many design research projects involving design policy and strategy the social value and impact of design social innovation design for the public sector and design strategy for businesses. She is currently director of the strategies for branding design and innovation research group in the Human Centered Design Institute at Brunel University.

design programs in the UK are attended by an increasingly diverse body of students, with an increasingly diverse set of interests and needs. Would specialist modules (system design, service design, sustainable design, retail design, international studies, digital culture, digital media, digital marketing, exhibition design, and the like) be the answer to serving requirements beyond the core essentials?

Selection of Suitable Maximum-heart-rate Formulas for Use with Karvonen Formula to Calculate Exercise Intensity

The Karvonen formula, which is widely used to estimate exercise intensity, contains maximum heart rate, H Rmax, as a variable. This study employed pedaling experiments to assess which of the proposed formulas for calculating H Rmaxwas the most suitable for use with the Karvonen formula. First, two kinds of experiments involving an ergometer were performed: an all-in-one-day experiment that tested eight pedaling loads in one day, and a one-load-per-day experiment that tested one load per day for eight days.A comparison of the data on 7 subjects showed that the all-in-one-day type of experiment was better for assessing H Rmaxformulas,at least for the load levels tested in our experiments. A statistical analysis of the experimental data on 47 subjects showed two of the H Rmaxformulas to be suitable for use in the Karvonen formula to estimate exercise intensity for males in their 20 s. In addition, the physical characteristics of a person having the greatest impact on exercise intensity were determined.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Integrated design innovation: A Mindset for designers of Tomorrow

作者： Amy O'Keefe Sarah Rottenberg Co‐leads Northwestern University's master of science in engineering design innovation (EDI) program and teaches at the Human‐Centered Service Design Studio. Her professional background includes more than a decade leading multidisciplinary service product design and development at a Chicago‐based tech startup acquired by Thomson Reuters. She consults on service experience and integrated multichannel initiatives for Fortune 50 retail and global Am Law 100 clients. O'Keefe received her MS in product design and development management from Northwestern. She is a founding member of the Integrated Design Innovation consortium (IDI) and is working with colleagues in the US and abroad to establish evolve and expand the category of integrated design innovation programs in engineering education. An adjunct assistant professor in the School of Design and the associate director of the Integrated Product Design Program at the University of Pennsylvania. She began her career as a design strategist at Doblin Inc. and was formerly a directing associate at Jump Associates where she worked with clients as diverse as Target Chrysler Fiat and GE to identify new products and new business opportunities. Rottenberg is a cofounder of Lia Diagnostics a company that has developed a flushable pregnancy test. She has a master of arts in social sciences from the University of Chicago where she specialized in anthropology and a bachelor of science in foreign service from Georgetown University.

Integrated design innovation master's programs combine the principles of human‐centered design and design thinking with studies in engineering, technology, and business.

The modular robot is constructed by the same shape and function module. The robot can transform and exchange, because it is multiple modules and function. In previous paper, we manufactured the module by 3D printer, and evaluated the mechanical function of the simple module and modular robot. In this paper, the module is miniaturized and joint parts are improved. Joint parts are used tenon joint in place of ball joint. Additionally, we confirmed the validity of the driving modular robot by comparing the previous.

The skill succession method is almost oral. It is not quantitative but qualitative. Quantitative succession is difficult. In this research, after tracking of a subject's motion using RGBD camera, a subject's motion is visualized as the motion curved surface. Expert and beginner perform the sports and entertainment motion, and the character of the surface is analyzed. The character is the maximum curvature and surface area. In addition, we suggest the composite surface, because one RGBD camera is not all tracking motion by occluding the obstacle or subject' body parts. Finally, we confirm the validity of skill succession by watching skeleton motion movie and curved surface.

The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.

In this paper, we explain how an experiential learning course and study tour to Gansu Province (People’s Republic of China) enabled undergraduates at the Singapore Management University (SMU) to acquire 21st-century competencies and higher-order thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating specific aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China–Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative — New International Land–Sea Trade Corridor (CCI-ILSTC) with emphasis on developing viable Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies aimed at selling Gansu produce in four Southeast Asian markets. We share how the course was designed to support the attainment of key learning goals and discuss how we turned pedagogical aspirations into concrete learning outcomes. We introduce key aspects of the so-called “SMU-XO” project that the students conducted in partnership with an industry partner, Pacific International Lines (PIL), and discuss how the project work helped learners to gain global competency by (i) examining critical issues related to BRI such as multi-modal infrastructure connectivity, (ii) appreciating the local perspectives of project stakeholders in Lanzhou and Shanghai and (iii) successfully interacting with people from different cultures, namely China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.

However, a mass quantity production of the module is difficult. Then, we focus on 3D printer. It is able to produce on a large scale easily and reasonably, but researchers and engineers need to operate 3D CAD and 3D printer. In this paper, we hold the 3D-CAD and 3D printers' workshop, and the effect is investigated. Afterwards, we evaluate the mechanical function of the simple module made by 3D printer. In addition, we suggest the modular robot of many modules.

This paper considers how the impression of gracefulness one feels from a bow is related to variations in the angles of the human body parts. From the fact that a bow movement is composed of multiple joints and tilting of various body parts, we developed a bow model using a skeleton model and uses it to extract the configuration factor of gracefulness in a bow in order to contribute to its objective evaluation and effective instruction. Using the model, multiple patterns of variations of the angle of the various model parts are examined and the psychological evaluation experiment is conducted on test to investigate the gracefulness.
