This study proposed a novel extraction method of c-Fos protein regions in DAB(3,3‘-diaminobenzidine)-stained mouse brain slice images using the U-Net model combined with the multi-channelization and $1\times 1$ convolution techniques. Our U-Net m odel, called $1\times 1$ conv U-Net, was applied to three DAB- strainedmouse slice images whose resolutions were $1000\mathrm{x}1000$ pixels. The experimental results demonstrated that the $1\times 1$ conv U-Net outperformed the conventional U-Net.

Rainfall frequency analysis using event-maximum rainfalls – An event-based mixture distribution modeling approach

Rainfall frequency analysis, an essential work for water resources management, is often conducted by using the annual maximum rainfall series. For rainfall stations with short record lengths and outliers presence, the use of annual maximum series for rainfall frequency analysis may yield design rainfall estimates of higher uncertainties. Moreover, for regions with cyclostationary climate patterns, the annual maximum rainfalls may be caused by different prevalent storm types, which differ in terms of their occurrence frequency and storm rainfall characteristics. In this study, we propose a novel event-maximum-rainfall-based mixture distribution modeling approach for rainfall frequency analysis. By considering the event-maximum rainfalls of individual storm events, the sample size for parameter estimation increases, and the uncertainty of design rainfall estimates reduces. Mixture distribution modeling enables a thorough investigation of the contributing probabilities of different storm types to the annual maximum rainfall. Through rigorous stochastic simulation, we demonstrated the superiority of the proposed approach over the conventional annual maximum rainfall approach. The proposed approach was applied to four representative rainfall stations in Taiwan, and the results revealed that the proposed approach is more robust than the conventional annual maximum rainfall approach. The results provide insights into the contributions of individual storm types to the annual maximum rainfall. © 2023 The Authors

Misdelivery in logistic services leads to increased costs and degradation of packages. For deliveries using trucks, erroneous deliveries are prevented by checking identification numbers on packages as the packages pass through delivery points. In recent years, it has become possible to monitor real-time location by attaching GPS receivers to packages, but few concrete efforts have been made to detect anomalies using truck transport data. This study introduces a basic framework for the detection of misdeliveries and a summary of the problems in actual truck misdelivery using special medical supply delivery data provided by a major Japanese logistics company. It is shown that the system can detect erroneous deliveries with high accuracy, even for actual delivery data with coarse resolution owing to the cost of installing the equipment. This study has the potential not only to improve logistics and reduce costs, but also to solve various social problems such as driver shortages.

Sliding mode control (SMC) has been considered as a powerful method for disturbances rejection. On the other hand, we have presented an equivalent-input disturbance (EID) approach to reject disturbances. This paper takes a dual-stage feed drive as an example to compare these two methods. The example shows that, while the EID approach obtains almost the same disturbance rejection performance for matched disturbances as that of the SMC does, it can reject unmatched disturbances. This shows the superiority of the EID approach over SMC method.

Automatic liver tumor detection from computed tomography (CT) makes clinical examinations more accurate. However, deep learning-based detection algorithms are characterized by high sensitivity and low precision, which hinders diagnosis given that false-positive tumors must first be identified and excluded. These false positives arise because detection models incorrectly identify partial volume artifacts as lesions, which in turn stems from the inability to learn the perihepatic structure from a global perspective. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel slice-fusion method in which mining the global structural relationship between the tissues in the target CT slices and fusing the features of adjacent slices according to the importance of the tissues. Furthermore, we design a new network based on our slice-fusion method and Mask R-CNN detection model, called Pinpoint-Net. We evaluated proposed model on the Liver Tumor Segmentation Challenge (LiTS) dataset and our liver metastases dataset. Experiments demonstrated that our slice-fusion method not only enhance tumor detection ability via reducing the number of false-positive tumors smaller than 10mm, but also improve segmentation performance. Without bells and whistles, a single Pinpoint-Net showed outstanding performance in liver tumor detection and segmentation on LiTS test dataset compared with other state-of-the-art models. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

In the era of the global village, frequent cross-border trade in goods has made container transportation a significant part in delivery of cargo. However, rollover accidents of container trucks often occur because of tall truck height, improper cargo stowage or crooked roads. Therefore, how to find the optimal center of gravity (CG) of the packed cargo remains an issue that the transportation industry should not neglect. To optimize cargo stability and reduce the incidence of rollovers, this paper proposes a genetic algorithm that scores the cargo stacking process to find the best CG of the cargo based on the CG of the vehicle. According to the deviation angle and the point closest to the best CG, we can Figure out the optimal cargo stacking method.

Energy efficiency effect on the public street lighting by using LED light replacement and kwh-meter installation at DKI Jakarta Province, Indonesia

Public street lighting consumes large energy for the public interest, but many street lights still do not use energy-saving technologies. In 2014, Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta operated 179,305 units of street lights. Of the number of installed armature, 92 % of them or 166,441 units are HPS (High-Pressure Sodium) armatures which are inefficient. In 2016, the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta cut down the energy used for street lighting, by implementing the programs of kWh-meter installation in every street lighting panel and use energy-saving lamps equipped with the smart system. The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta is registered with 6,399 customer IDs in PLN (State Owned Electric Company), and gradually carried out the kWh Meter installation and changes to the contract. The program to use energy-saving lights done by replacing the HPS armature that is not energy efficient to LED armature which is known to be energy efficient. Until the end of 2016, the number of armatures that has been replaced was 89,417 units. The research results on 25 samples of PLN customer IDs and the replacement of 2,162 units armature, showed that the energy efficiency through kWh meter installation and armature replacement reduce the power consumption from 330,414 kWh to 71,278 kWh or by 78.43%. Generally, there was a decrease in the value of electricity bill compared to the before the replacement. The program of kWh-meter installations and replacement of the armature has a payback period of 2.66 years.

Seismic retrofitting with steel brace is widely-spread for the seismic retrofitting of existing RC buildings. However, there has been no study that tried to apply this seismic retrofit method to existing RC buildings with very low-strength concrete. In this research, we confirmed the effect of seismic retrofitting steel brace which used post-installed anchor together with epoxy resin for RC structures with low-strength concrete through the structural tests of two series. As the beginning, we confirmed the shear strength of the indirect connection in which existing RC frame is tied to frame of steel brace. Next, we confirmed the mechanical behavior of RC frame retrofitted with steel brace subjected to axial and horizontal loads. From the structural tests, it was shown that ultimate strength of the indirect connection and RC frame retrofitted with steel brace can be estimated by the current evaluation method. In addition, it made clear that ductility index F of RC frame retrofitted with steel brace can be 2.0.

Scaling up sediment transport has been problematic because most sediment loss models (e.g., the Universal Soil Loss Equation) are developed using data from small plots where runoff is generated by infiltration excess. However, in most watersheds, runoff is produced by saturation excess processes. Therefore, scaling up requires a hydrology model that accurately predicts the location and extent of runoff source areas. These runoff predictions can then be used for simulating sediment concentrations. We base sediment predictions on a simple, well-tested distributed saturation excess hydrology model, which calculates surface runoff, interflow, and baseflow. Surface runoff originates from bottom lands that become saturated during the rainy season or from severely degraded lands with little or no storage capacity. Baseflow and interflow are generated from the remaining parts of the landscape. Interflow comes from the shallow soils over an impermeable surface and base flow results from percolation below the impervious layer. To obtain the sediment concentrations, we assume that during surface runoff, there is a linear relationship between runoff velocity and sediment concentration, but baseflow and interflow are sediment free. Thus only the runoff component of stream discharge is involved in active erosive work compared to baseflow and interflow that contribute minimally to watershed sediment yield. To show the general applicability of the Saturation Excess Erosion Model (SEEModel), the model was tested for watersheds located 10,000 km apart, in the United States and in Ethiopia. In the Ethiopia highlands, we simulated the 113 ha Anjeni watershed, the 400 ha Enkulal watershed and the 180,000 km2 the Blue Nile basin. In the Catskill Mountains in New York State, the sediment concentrations were simulated in the upper 493 km2 Esopus Creek watershed. COMBAT systems-engineering AND THE TOP LEVEL REQUIREMENT

Prior to his retirement from the U.S. Navy in 1978 he served in the AEGIS Project Office Naval Sea Systems Command as ASW Systems Manager and Combat Systems/Ship Design Coordinator. His previous assignments involved service in ten ships including engineering duty in Carriers and Submarines and two Destroyer commands. He is a 1957 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy holds Master's degrees in Business Administration and Systems Management and attended the Program Managers Course at the Defense System Management College Fort Belvoir Va. He is a member of the American Defense Preparedness Association and has been a member of ASNE since 1958 having previously served on the ASNE Audit Committee and presently as the Chairman of the ASNE Membership Committee.

The Top Level Requirement (TLR) is a document that is required by the Chief of Naval Operations to be developed for new ship designs. This document describes in some detail the requirements levied on the ship designers for characteristics of the ship and its combat system. The Combat System engineering program has been developed in the Naval Sea systems Command (NAVSEA) to provide a disciplined approach to the engineering of upgrades and modernizations to current surface ship complex combat systems. One of the axioms of this systemized approach is that “top down” engineering must take place. That is, the rationale for the upgrade for the new elements being included in the system, and for the way the integration of those elements takes place, must be based upon a set of operational requirements. In order to systems engineer the developments of modernizations properly, the Author proposes that TLRs be developed for each combatant ship class without a TLR that is a candidate for a major modernization or upgrade. The primary focus would be on the combat system requirements, but also there is concern for the other ship operational characteristics as well. The TLR should be contained in a document of about twenty-five pages. As with the current TLRs, a Working Group of representatives from the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV), Naval Material Command (NAVMAT)/Naval Sea systems Command (NAVSEA), and other activities would be the developers of the new TLR. Because of the numbers of individuals with some responsibility in current Fleet ships, closer coordination between NAVMAT/NAVSEA and OPNAV is required. The process which this paper describes may well support significant cost savings in future-year combat system upgrades, and the Combat System engineering Community will have a basis for combat system design.
