Design of digital circuits and systems are topics covered in undergraduate courses on computer science, computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. Simple processor architectures are used as example of digital systems to apply and integrate the concepts studied in these courses. In this paper, we discuss the use of a simple processor named BIP (Basic Instruction-set Processor) in courses on digital circuits and systems design. BIP is distinguished from similar processors because it was developed by applying a multidisciplinary approach in order to allow its use in introductory courses on computer programming and in several other courses in the computer science area. © 2012 IEEE.

At present, the most common and low-cost method to control the drone is to use a mobile phone with an APP. The operator takes his mobile phone screen as a human-machine interface, and at the same time controls and receives the images returned by the drone. The control mode can be divided into two symmetry modes according to how the operator views and knows the location of the drone: exocentric viewing and egocentric viewing mode. In the exocentric viewing mode, the operator directly visually confirms the position of the drone, while in the egocentric viewing mode, the drone is equipped with a camera and transmits the flight image to the operator in real-time. Since the drone cannot be far away from the operator in the exocentric viewing mode, the relative egocentric mode allows the operator to feel immersed in the environment to control the drone more accurately. Therefore, by adapting the egocentric viewing and using human motion recognition, an unmanned vehicle remote-control system is designed. The low-speed, small-scaled, nature-stability UAVs are ideally suited for the proposed system. The system was designed with a PID controller to improve the UAV's handling. The experimental results verified the feasibility of the UVA control system and it could stabilize the posture of the drone. © 2022 IEEE.

In novel learning environments, learning systems not only are able to get environmental information through sensing technology to provide adaptive learning resources and information to students, but also help students to conduct interactions with learning communities. In this study, the development potential of digital archives resource into outdoor environmental education is focused with mobile learning-based educational theory. It makes the learner learn the essence of environmental education, in order to appreciate the valuable resources of nature paid to understand the sustainable necessary of ecological coexistence, thus promote the human treasure of natural resources. To verify the feasibility of our approach, the grade students participate the cooperative learning activity. The experimental results show that the effect of mobile community interactive learning is better than the general outdoor learning methods and the cooperative learning theory can improve the efficiency of learners' knowledge effectively. © 2012 IEEE.

Teaching engineering and technology subjects involves conveying understanding of abstract information structures and processes such as complex telecommunications protocols, complex mathematical concepts, and data structures. These are multidimensional and can be difficult to grasp quickly. Supported by a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Technology for Teaching grant, the School of Engineering and Technology at National University has embarked on a project to enable students to grasp these complex concepts more quickly and easily, using continuous dialog among students and instructors as the structures are first introduced and then examined from multiple perspectives through real-time interaction among students, small groups, and instructors. HP Wireless Tablet PCs are used to discuss and experiment with diagrams and processes in realtime. This allows combining lectures and problem-solving sessions into a single class session. Our hypothesis is that: 1) an in-depth learning of theory is accomplished, and 2) student engagement is enhanced. Presentation of theory by the instructor is integrated with application while the theory is still in the student's short-term memory. Students no longer have to wait for a separate session such as a recitation session to apply the concepts. This approach often takes less time. In addition to accelerating the learning process, expert instructors find this approach more rewarding as students grasp new concepts more quickly. Analysis of data captured from both students and instructors are presented to support our hypotheses, and our results are compared with similar research carried out by other universities. In addition, the level of interaction enabled by the use of HP Tablets in on-line classes is discussed. In a world where technological advancements are progressing at a vertiginous pace, social networks, online games, virtual worlds, streaming services, and remote work are part of everyday life. This is the case for the work environment, with the use of technological tools and home offices. In contrast, harmful aspects have been amplified, such as stress that affects occupational health. Lately, considerable interest has been gained in the affective domain in improving the occupational situation using empathic responses. In this work, we study the effect of machine empathic responses such as blue light, relaxing music, and the combination of light and music on people performing stressful tasks in an occupational environment. Thirty five participants tested different stimuli, eleven tested the music condition, twelve the light effect, and another twelve the combination of light and music. The monitoring of the heart rate variability along with psychological measures show that empathic responses can help reduce humans stress levels.

Optimal deployment of private 5G multi-access edge computing systems at smart factories: Using hybrid crow search algorithm

In smart factories, an increasing number of mobile intelligent devices are deployed to meet the growing demands for flexible manufacturing. These devices, equipped with various sensors, synchronize a substantial amount of data with cloud servers for real-time monitoring and control. Fifth generation mobile networks (5G) combined with multi-access edge computing (MEC) provide the capabilities for multiple connections, large-scale data transmission, and efficient response times, becoming the mainstream network architectures for the needs. Additionally, with the emerging trend of energy-saving, recent works have addressed energy consumption as a significant cost factor. However, most previous studies tended to focus solely on cloud servers, neglecting energy consumption at edge computing and underestimating the impact of heterogeneous mobile device. As the scope of smart factory networks continues to expand, the challenges become increasingly critical. This study presents a private 5G MEC system architecture tailored for smart panel factories. The concerned problem is formulated as an integer programming model, which determines deployment locations and quantities for MEC servers and 5G small cells, including picocells and femtocells, so as to minimize the overall deployment costs while meeting the constraints of connectivity, capacity, latency, coverage, serviceability, and energy consumption. Since the edge server deployment problem is NP-hard, this study further proposes a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm, CSAVNS, which combines the strengths of crow search algorithm (CSA) and variable neighborhood search (VNS). In the global search phase of CSA, the VNS local search is introduced to enhance the algorithm's capabilities. Experimental analysis demonstrates that the proposed CSAVNS outperforms other algorithms in terms of solution solving capabilities. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Developing a prototype concurrent design tool for composite topside structures

He completed his bachelor of science degree in aeropace and ocean engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1985 and his master of science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland in 1990. Mr. Dirlik recently completed a master of science program in applied physics at The Johns Hopins University and currently works in the Radar Cross Section and Target Physics Branch of the Signatures Directorate at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Corderoke Division. He has worked on Navy low observable programs since 1990. Stephen Hambric:is a research associate at the Applied Research Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his B. S. and M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and his D. Sc. in mechnical engineering from the George Washington University. He has worked on several computer aided multidiscikplinary design and optimization projects over the years including an automated propeller design system and a structural acoustic optimization capability. Dr. Shpour Azarm:is currently working as an associate professor with the Design and Manufacturing Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of maryland at College Park. Dr Azarm's expertise is in the areas of optimization-based designed and concurrent design and optimization of multidisciplinary systems. He was a consultant at Black & Decker Corporation (summer 1996) and worked as a Navy senior summer faculty fellow (summer 1995) and a NASA summer faculty fellow (summer 1994). He was a visiting scientist at NASA Langley Research Center for Multidisciplinary Analysis and Applied Structural Optimzatiom at the University of Siegen in Germany (spring 1992) and the Design Institute of the Technical University of Denmark (summer 1990). A prototype concurrent engineering tool has been developed for the preliminary design of composite topside structures for modern navy warships. This tool, named GELS for the Concurrent Engineering of Layered Structures, provides designers with an immediate assessment of the impacts of their decisions on several disciplines which are important to the performance of a modern naval topside structure, including electromagnetic interference effects (EMI), radar cross section (RCS), structural integrity, cost, and weight. Preliminary analysis modules in each of these disciplines are integrated to operate from a common set of design variables and a common materials database. Performance in each discipline and an overall fitness function for the concept are then evaluated. A graphical user interface (GUI) is used to define requirements and to display the results from the technical analysis modules. Optimization techniques, including feasible sequential quadratic programming (FSQP) and exhaustive search are used to modify the design variables to satisfy all requirements simultaneously. The development of this tool, the technical modules, and their integration are discussed noting the decisions and compromises required to develop and integrate the modules into a prototype conceptual design tool.
