After the outbreak of COVID-19, numerous language courses have embraced online learning. However, the shift of teaching environment also brought many technical and pedagogical challenges. Phonetics learning which requires mutual interaction, teacher’s clarification, and personal feedbacks so students can pronounce correctly is considered one of the most difficult subjects to teach in online context. Therefore, well designed studies are needed to understand the optimized teaching methods to improve student’s performance. This research adopted counterbalanced design to evaluate the effect of contrastive listening and discrimination (CLD) method and sound-character aggregation method (SCA) method in online context. Although both methods are suggested for phonetic learning in offline environment, the result show intermediate Chines-as-foreign-language (CFL) Japanese students had significant improvement after CLD method, but not after SCA method in an online context. However, although students did not have significant improvements after SCA method, its progress is not significantly different from CLD method. We further give some suggestions about teaching Japanese students about Chinese affricates in an online, one-on-one environment. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Due to the influence of the global pandemic, online and distance learning has replaced traditional classroom and face-to-face interaction so students can continue learning. Internet mediated self-directed learning also climbed to a new height and foreign language learning from YouTube video is a very popular learning method for many. Furthermore, YouTube videos can supplement cross-cultural knowledge for foreign language (FL) learners, which is a critical yet hard to develop ability for FL teachers. However, unlike for FL textbooks, the cross-cultural elements have not been examined thoroughly for YouTube videos. Therefore, this study analyzed the most subscribed and watched Japanese Chinese-as-FL YouTuber, "Lee Sisters ch", which is also the official representative of HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) test. We selected 30 most watched videos and analyzed their contents according to Chastain’s Big ‘C’ small ‘c’ culture framework. The result showed 86.67% of the most popular 30 videos covered topics about culture: 23.33% of the videos were related to big ‘C’ culture and 63.33% were about small ‘c’ culture. Similar to earlier researches on FL textbooks, "Literature" was the main theme of big ‘C’. On the other hand, "Everyday living" was the most frequent small ‘c’ topic, which is a unique phenomenon for YouTube FL channels. Furthermore, not only did the portion of big ‘C’ and small ‘c’ cultures match the suggestions of FL scholars, the language used in all videos were also mainly in Japanese that fit the needs of Japanese CFL learners. It is concluded YouTube video may be suitable to learn cross-cultural knowledge for FL learner, especially for Japanese students. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Improving the web accessibility of a university digital library: A design thinking approach

The accelerated reformation of the digital library system has highlighted the significance of accessibility and user experience design in its development and operation. The digital library is expected to serve more diverse and challenging users’ requirements, making accessibility the prominent attribute. Despite its significance, many digital library systems fail to address accessibility accordingly. This study aims to examine accessibility problems in the digital library system in higher education, i.e., Universitas Airlangga’s e-library, and develop a solution based on the design thinking methodology. The questionnaire on the empathize phase gathered 25 respondents’ perceptions about the current library website. The identified major accessibility requirements are unmatched and incomplete library description on the front page, complex and unclear navigation menu, low contrast between the text and background image—making reading more difficult, especially for users with low vision, the absence of the first heading, and unspecified website language. The solutions generated during the Ideation phase corresponded to the list of identified requirements. The prototype implements these solutions by combining them with the Web Content Accessibility Design 2.0 standard. The evaluation results signify the accessibility progress in the redesigned library website prototype. The average user rating increased from 3 on the current library website to 4.63 on the redesigned version, and the task completion rate reached 92.86%. In addition, the accessibility tests using WAVE and AxeDev Tools exhibit major improvements in contrast error and total accessibility issues. Findings from this study are helpful for system developers, user interface/user experience designers, and libraries in formulating an accessible digital library system. This research aimed to analyze the sustainability of fisheries in the bay based on ecological footprint (EF) and bio-capacity (BC). The used methods were ecological footprint and biocapacity approaches based on primary production requirement (PPR). Data were derived by surveying main caught fish of small fishermen as a main basis of calculation and the trophic levels were determined by fish base data. The calculation of BC also followed the ecological footprint calculation pattern where its estimation was according to the water types. Results of this research exhibit that all water system types possess the value of EF is higher than the EC value. The average values of EF in tropical shelves (TS) and non-tropical shelves (non-TS), and C&C are 64708 km2, 6474 km2, and 8148 km2, respectively. Whilst, the value of BC is around 2707 km2 or only about 30% from all total waters of Jakarta Bay that is able to support fishing activities. Furthermore, the values of EF per-capita for TS and non-TS, C&CS, and BC, are 6.04 km2/fisherman, 0.71 km2/fisherman, 0.42 km2/fisherman, and 0,21 km2/fisherman, respectively. These counting results signify that the values of ecological footprint (EF) are higher than the values of bio-capacity (BC). This result infers that fishing sustainability in Jakarta Bay has delivered a heavy burden.

Background: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability. Methods: We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecasted the prevalence of hearing loss until 2050. Findings: An estimated 1·57 billion (95% uncertainty interval 1·51–1·64) people globally had hearing loss in 2019, accounting for one in five people (20·3% [19·5–21·1]). Of these, 403·3 million (357·3–449·5) people had hearing loss that was moderate or higher in severity after adjusting for hearing aid use, and 430·4 million (381·7–479·6) without adjustment. The largest number of people with moderate-to-complete hearing loss resided in the Western Pacific region (127·1 million people [112·3–142·6]). Of all people with a hearing impairment, 62·1% (60·2–63·9) were older than 50 years. The Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index explained 65·8% of the variation in national age-standardised rates of years lived with disability, because countries with a low HAQ Index had higher rates of years lived with disability. By 2050, a projected 2·45 billion (2·35–2·56) people will have hearing loss, a 56·1% (47·3–65·2) increase from 2019, despite stable age-standardised prevalence. Interpretation: As populations age, the number of people with hearing loss will increase. Interventions such as childhood screening, hearing aids, effective management of otitis media and meningitis, and cochlear implants have the potential to ameliorate this burden. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a heterogeneous disease that develops through diverse pathophysiological processes and molecular mechanisms that are often specific to cell type. Here, to characterize the genetic contribution to these processes across ancestry groups, we aggregate genome-wide association study data from 2,535,601 individuals (39.7% not of European ancestry), including 428,452 cases of T2D. We identify 1,289 independent association signals at genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10) that map to 611 loci, of which 145 loci are, to our knowledge, previously unreported. We define eight non-overlapping clusters of T2D signals that are characterized by distinct profiles of cardiometabolic trait associations. These clusters are differentially enriched for cell-type-specific regions of open chromatin, including pancreatic islets, adipocytes, endothelial cells and enteroendocrine cells. We build cluster-specific partitioned polygenic scores in a further 279,552 individuals of diverse ancestry, including 30,288 cases of T2D, and test their association with T2D-related vascular outcomes. Cluster-specific partitioned polygenic scores are associated with coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease and end-stage diabetic nephropathy across ancestry groups, highlighting the importance of obesity-related processes in the development of vascular outcomes. Our findings show the value of integrating multi-ancestry genome-wide association study data with single-cell epigenomics to disentangle the aetiological heterogeneity that drives the development and progression of T2D. This might offer a route to optimize global access to genetically informed diabetes care.

Background Lower respiratory infections (LRIs) are a major global contributor to morbidity and mortality. In 2020-21, non-pharmaceutical interventions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic reduced not only the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, but also the transmission of other LRI pathogens. Tracking LRI incidence and mortality, as well as the pathogens responsible, can guide health-system responses and funding priorities to reduce future burden. We present estimates from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors study (GBD) 2021 of the burden of non-COVID-19 LRIs and corresponding aetiologies from 1990 to 2021, inclusive of pandemic effects on the incidence and mortality of select respiratory viruses, globally, regionally, and for 204 countries and territories. Methods We estimated mortality, incidence, and aetiology attribution for LRI, defined by the GBD as pneumonia or bronchiolitis, not inclusive of COVID-19. We analysed 26 259 site-years of mortality data using the Cause of Death Ensemble model to estimate LRI mortality rates. We analysed all available age-specific and sex-specific data sources, including published literature identified by a systematic review, as well as household surveys, hospital admissions, health insurance claims, and LRI mortality estimates, to generate internally consistent estimates of incidence and prevalence using DisMod-MR 2.1. For aetiology estimation, we analysed multiple causes of death, vital registration, hospital discharge, microbial laboratory, and literature data using a network analysis model to produce the proportion of LRI deaths and episodes attributable to the following pathogens: Acinetobacter baumannii, Chlamydia spp, Enterobacter spp, Escherichia coli, fungi, group B streptococcus, Haemophilus influenzae, influenza viruses, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Legionella spp, Mycoplasma spp, polymicrobial infections, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumonia
