Recognition of emotion in speech (RES) is generating significant interest due to its promise to improve human-computer interaction through precise identification of emotions from speech signals. This work investigates how well deep learning methods advance RES accuracy. The study makes it possible to analyze a variety of speech patterns, emotional expressions, and demographic information all of which are crucial for developing trustworthy RES models. According to the study, CNNs demonstrated their ability to capture spatial characteristics from voice spectrogram representations with an amazing accuracy rate of 93%. RNNs performed exceptionally well at modeling temporal dependencies and capturing the sequential nature of speech, with an accuracy rate of 90%. Both models performed well, but some emotions such 'angry' and 'surprise' were more accurately detected than others, including 'disgust' and 'happy,' suggesting room for improvement. © 2024 IEEE.

The long-term participation of trained and competent employees is required to improve the morale, productivity, safety, value, and autonomy of an organization. In small and medium-sized software industries, the long-term involvement of developers will not only boost the efficiency of software development but also help train their team members. Although software industries have managed to stimulate developers’ productivity and reduce their turnover with a better compensation plan, the incentive through money has caused contradictory arguments. Hence, there is a need to employ a more systematic way to explore, analyze, and calibrate the developer’s needs, so that the managerial roles can make informed decisions and incorporate influential motivators to increase a developer’s job satisfaction level. In this respect, we are conducting an empirical study using the basics of Maslow's theory, a motivational theory in psychology, to (1) explore the developer’s motivation level in software industries, (2) benchmark the developer’s needs for job satisfaction at each level, and (3) analyze the job-hunting factors for developers’ turnover. We conducted a questionnaire-based study to gather feedback from 128 developers in 10 software industries with four types of analyses being conducted. The results indicate that satisfaction levels can vary across software industries, but the management can anticipate developers’ high-level needs from their low-level needs to determine influencing and motivating factors for job satisfaction improvements. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Edge Computing (EC) is a distributed network architecture offering computation and storage resources at the network edge, addressing cloud computing limitations by optimizing latency and enhancing data safety and privacy for real-time services. It also supports intelligent solutions for IoT-based smart healthcare systems through Deep Learning (DL). DL aids in resource allocation optimization and disease prediction. However, the surge in wearable device usage introduces challenges in user mobility and migration, leading to increased latency and service inconsistencies. To tackle this, we propose EdgeMob, an intelligent and context-aware scheme deployed as a federation of edge servers. EdgeMob utilizes Q-learning-based reinforcement learning for personalized service migration decisions based on user mobility and Quality of Service (QoS). We evaluate our system against existing solutions, considering parameters such as user-perceived latency, migration cost, and network bandwidth utilization. © 2024 IEEE.

Profit Maximization of Delay-Sensitive, Differential Accuracy Inference Services in Mobile Edge Computing

The integration of Artificial Itelligence (AI) and edge computing has sparked significant interest in edge inference services. In this paper, we consider delay-sensitive, differential accuracy inference services in a Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) network while meeting user stringent delay and accuracy requirements. We formulate two novel profit maximization problems under static and dynamic settings of service request arrivals, with the aim of maximizing the accumulative profit of admitted requests. We assign differential accuracy service requests to the corresponding resolution instances of their requested service models, assuming that each resolution instance can serve up to L≥ 1 the same type of service requests. Since the profit maximization problem is NP-hard, we first formulate an Integer Linear Program (ILP) solution if the problem size is small or medium;otherwise, we devise a constant randomized algorithm with high probability. Then, we consider dynamic service request admissions without the knowledge of future request arrivals for a given finite time horizon, for which we develop a simple yet effective prediction mechanism to accurately predict the number of different resolution instances of each model needed, and pre-deploy the predicted number of resolution instances into cloudlets to reduce instantiating delays. We then devise an online algorithm with a provable competitive ratio for the dynamic profit maximization problem by leveraging the primal-dual dynamic updating technique. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms by simulations. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms are promising. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

software-defined networking (SDN) has significantly enhanced network agility by decoupling network control from hardware devices. This architectural shift exposes SDN infrastructures to increased risks from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which can severely disrupt network services and render them unavailable to legitimate users. Despite the existence of various techniques for detecting specific types of DDoS attacks, there remains a need for more comprehensive work capable of accurately identifying multiple attack categories. We have addressed the gap by proposing a robust DDoS attack detection method in the SDN. We utilize advanced machine learning (ML) algorithms to analyze the InSDN dataset, employing advanced feature extraction techniques to improve detection accuracy and efficiency. Three feature extraction methods, Se-lectKBest, ANOVA F-value scores, and feature importance scores from RandomForest Classifier, were used to select the best ten features from 81. This feature selection, combined with ensemble learning, achieved an accuracy of 99.9%. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve, confusion matrix, and K-fold cross-validation were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. © 2025 The Authors. software-Defined Networking (SDN) increases network flexibility by decoupling network control from hardware. However, this also makes networks more vulnerable to Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, that can severely disrupt operations. Existing detection methods typically focus on specific DDoS attacks, highlighting the necessity for more comprehensive detection strategies. Our proposed methodology presents a resilient technique for detecting DDoS attacks by employing a hybrid deep learning approach. Utilizing the InSDN dataset tailored for SDN environments, we employ an advanced feature selection process based on a consensus approach to identify the best eight features, enhancing detection accuracy and efficiency. Cross entropy is utilized at the control plane to detect anomalous activity by computing the entropy between source IP (Internet Protocol) and destination IP data to identify DDoS attacks. Our proposed model integrates Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) networks, achieving a detection accuracy of 99.9%. The CNN provides efficient spatial feature extraction, while LSTM captures temporal dependencies, enhancing the model's capability to detect complex attack patterns. We also implement a comprehensive evaluation framework, including metrics such as model loss, model accuracy, and confusion matrix. © 2025 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Cardinality estimation for property graph queries with gated learning approach on the graph database

With the increasing complexity of graph query processing tasks, it is difficult for users to obtain the accurate cardinality before or during the execution of query tasks. Accurate estimate query cardinality is crucial for property graph data model, which usually involves entities, multiple joins, and various types of properties (key-value pairs). While learning-based approaches have been used in query optimization, estimating the cardinality of property graph queries is still particularly challenging. In this paper, we first formally represent each property graph query and then divide the estimation process into three phases: query execution, training data generation, and model training. Secondly, we construct a data pool to deal the updating query workloads in the training data generation phase. Thirdly, we utilize the gate mechanism to develop a cardinality estimation framework based on deep learning neural networks for property graph queries in the Neo4j database, and we propose a hybrid loss function to optimize the training process. Finally, we adopt a method of pre-aggregating the underlying data to speed up query execution in the first phase. The result of the experiment on two real-world datasets shows that our optimized methods can effectively improve the estimation accuracy of the deep learning model, and our query estimator outperforms other deep learning models compared in terms of estimation accuracy. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.
