This study delves into the economic feasibility of various energy system combinations under the influence of carbon fee policies, using a convenience store located in the Changbin Industrial Park as a representative case. The primary focus is analyzing the intricate relationship between the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) and carbon fees. In light of the growing importance of sustainable energy practices, this research explores how different combinations of renewable energy sources and storage systems can be optimized within the context of evolving carbon fee regulations. The findings underscore the pivotal role of carbon fees as a decisive factor in determining the economic viability of microgrid systems. Specifically, when the carbon fee escalates to NT$3000/tCO2e, certain system configurations, such as GPWL (Grid-Photovoltaic-Wind-Lithium) and GPWF (Grid-Photovoltaic-Wind-Flow Battery), emerge as economically viable options. However, the feasibility of these systems is significantly influenced by the prevailing costs of green electricity procurement, which can either enhance or limit their attractiveness. Moreover, the study introduces a regression analysis model capable of accurately predicting fluctuations in energy costs across different carbon fee scenarios. This model provides a robust analytical tool for decision-makers, enabling them to anticipate the financial implications of policy changes on energy systems. The insights derived from this research are particularly valuable for businesses and policymakers, offering a hopeful vision of a future with cost-effective and sustainable energy solutions. © 2024 IEEE.

For zero carbon emission, the industry has the pressure of carbon emission reduction. The service industry must also correspond to carbon emission policies. Hence, operators of convenience stores must prioritize the effective reduction of carbon emissions. There are two ways for them to reduce carbon emissions: energy conservation and renewable energy microgrids. Using HomerPro, we simulated the application of a renewable energy microgrid in convenience stores. Then microgrid system combinations were composed of the power grid, wind power, solar photovoltaics, lithium, and flow batteries. We used the 2030 carbon fee set in the Ministry of Environment report as the benchmark for techno-economic assessment to explore the carbon reduction benefits and cost assessments brought by the microgrid system. © 2024 IEEE.

In response to the growing global and local demand for net-zero carbon emissions, this study thoroughly explores the feasibility of implementing microgrid technology in convenience stores across Taiwan to reduce carbon emissions and enhance overall energy sustainability significantly. The research emphasizes the integration of renewable energy sources, specifically solar and wind power, aligning with Taiwan's strategic initiatives in promoting renewable energy development. Utilizing the HomerPro simulation tool, the study conducts an in-depth assessment of various energy combinations, evaluating their performance under various conditions, including different carbon pricing scenarios, grid reliability factors, and essential financial variables such as discount rates and inflation. A total of 256 system configurations were simulated to identify the most economically viable and environmentally sustainable solutions for these convenience stores. The study provides a comprehensive understanding of the impact of these variables on the financial and operational feasibility of microgrid systems. The findings are crucial for informing policymakers, energy planners, and business owners, offering practical guidance for designing and implementing effective energy strategies within Taiwan's convenience store sector. By advocating for the adoption of microgrid technology, this study contributes to Taiwan's broader goals of achieving carbon neutrality and improving energy security and plays a key role in reducing dependence on conventional grid systems. This work supports transitioning to a more sustainable, resilient, and future-proof energy infrastructure. © 2024 IEEE.

The project staff investigates and discovers if the output contact of the protection relay fails in an electrical accident. In a short-circuit accident, the protection relay may not issue commands to fix the fault by activating the switch. The investigation result can be used to find the primary cause of the accident and why the equipment was damaged. In replacing the faulty protection relay, all newly installed relays must be tested to verify the functionality of their input and output contacts. Precautionary measures need to be ensured to prevent a similar incident. Poor equipment quality and improper installation cause a newly added power system's protection relay not to output signals correctly. Despite general procedures of testing the relay's output and input contacts before integrating the relay into the grid, accidents caused by the abovementioned reasons are still unavoidable. In this study, an in-depth analysis of the data logs and relevant protection relay settings was conducted, focusing on reliability and failure prevention. The analysis result revealed that the protection relay of transformer temperature was set conservatively, failing the backup protection. The case study results and discussions in this study provide a reference for power engineering designers and a guiding framework for accident analysis. © 2024 IEEE.

The study centers on a comprehensive cost-effectiveness analysis of solar and wind power generation within the microgrid system located in the Changbin Industrial Zone. This region, characterized by favorable solar irradiance and wind conditions, is an ideal location for developing and implementing renewable energy systems. Through extensive simulations, we examined the impact of temperature fluctuations on photovoltaic (PV) module efficiency and the influence of varying wind turbine heights on energy output. Our findings revealed that temperature plays a crucial role in determining the performance of PV modules, with higher temperatures leading to a noticeable decline in efficiency. Conversely, wind power generation is significantly affected by the height of wind turbines, where increased height results in enhanced energy capture due to stronger and more consistent wind speeds at elevated altitudes. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of considering seasonal variations, as these can significantly influence the overall efficiency and reliability of renewable energy systems within a microgrid. By optimizing wind turbine heights and incorporating strategies to mitigate the effects of temperature fluctuations on solar panels, the study demonstrates that it is possible to significantly improve the overall power generation efficiency of the microgrid system. Improving efficiency reduces the cost per kilowatt-hour of electricity generated, thereby enhancing the economic viability of renewable energy projects. The insights gained from this analysis are expected to provide valuable guidance for future renewable energy planning, particularly in regions with similar climatic and geographical conditions. Such strategic planning is essential for maximizing the return on investment and ensuring the long-term sustainability of renewable energy systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Activated carbon is known as an amorphous compound that can be manufactured from carbon-containing raw materials. It has a high adsorption capacity and is widely used in a variety of fields due to its high surface area and nano-sized pore structure. The rising demand has prompted a search for low-cost, large-quantity raw materials to replace non-renewable raw materials such as coal and petroleum residues, both of which are becoming scarce. The purpose of this research is to assess three types of Balinese bamboo as raw materials for activated carbon: petung, santong, and tali bamboos. Samples were prepared by dehydrating them under the sun for 5 days, cutting them into small pieces (±1 × 1 × 1 cm), and then heating them in an electric furnace at 105 ℃ for 1 h. Samples were then observed their microstructure using an optical microscope. To determine the chemical composition, moisture, ash, volatile, and fixed carbon content of the raw materials, the sample was ground into powder and characterized using the Van Soest analysis, and termogravimetric analysis (TGA test). The results showed that tali bamboo has the highest potential to produce high-quality activated carbon due to its higher cellulose (37.97%) and lignin (32.27%) content than petung and santong bamboos;despite having the highest moisture content (11.23%), tali bamboo has a fairly high volatile (70.72%), the lowest ash content (1.41%), and the highest fixed carbon (16.64%). In the past, gearboxes were used in wind turbines to adjust the rotor rotational speed. With advancements in the technology of wind turbines, wind farm developers adopt direct-drive wind turbines based on permanent magnet synchronous generators. In the power quality analysis in wind farms, the wind turbine model is used to simulate the electrical characteristics of wind turbines to meet regulatory requirements. However, it takes considerable time for a detailed analysis and assessment of wind turbine models in the early stages of large wind farms. Therefore, based on direct-drive wind turbines, we used power systems computer aided design (PSCAD) to construct several wind turbine units (SWTU) and scale component models (SCM). The model's performance was explored regarding tip speed ratio, pitch angle, and output power at different wind speeds. The practicality and performance of aggregated models were evaluated effectively in power system analysis. © 2024 IEEE.

The Southwest Maluku region in eastern Indonesia is considered a frontier,outermost and underdeveloped *** inhabitants live on isolated islands,including the residents of Mahaleta Village,where only 9.4%of the community have limited access to *** study aimed to design an economically feasible hybrid renewable energy(RE)system based on solar and wind energy to integrate with the productive activities of the *** study developed conceptual schemes to meet the demand for electricity from the resi-dential,community,commercial and productive sectors of the *** analysis was performed using a techno-economic *** hybrid system was designed using the HOMER Pro optimization function,and cold-storage and dryer systems were designed to support related productive *** optimized design of the hybrid RE system comprised 271.62 kW of solar photovoltaics,80 kW of wind turbines and a 1-MWh lead-acid *** found that the hybrid RE system would only be economically feasible with a full-grant incentive and an electricity tariff of$0.0808/***,the productive activity schemes were all economically feasible,with a cold-storage cost of$0.035/kg and a drying cost of$0.082/*** the hybrid RE system with productive activities can improve the economic feasibility of the energy system and create more jobs as well as increase income for the local community.

Dispensing generic drugs instead of original drugs from pharmacies may cause adverse drug events to patients. It is difficult to separate between generic drugs and originals due to their similarities, except for imprints on the tablets. In this paper, a vision-based medicine tablets classification system using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) with a transfer learning approach is proposed. The proposed classification system aims to helps its user distinguish between the original drugs and generic drugs based on imprints on the medicine tablets. Multiple CNN models are created and tested as the classifier for the drug classification system. Three well-known CNN models are chosen as base models for creating CNNs with the transfer learning, including VGG16, Inception-V3, and ResNet50-V2. The developed CNN models are tested with images of medicine tablet taken from smartphones. Results from the experiments are evaluated through accuracies, precisions, recalls, and F-1 scores. Experimental results show satisfying performances of the proposed system in classifying original drugs and generic drugs using visual information. © 2024 IEEE.
