Reinforcement learning is a learning paradigm in which a control is learned automatically based on rewards through trial and error based on rewards. When reinforcement learning is employed for robot control, the action that is output by reinforcement learning and the input of the actuator are often the same. A robot's actuator has a time constant of a first-order delay element between input and output. Delays result in the deterioration of the reinforcement learning performance because the environments that contain them lack the Markov property. Although there have been studies of such environments, they are problematic in that performance deteriorates when the time constant of a first-order time-delay element greater than the control cycle. The principal contribution of this paper is to propose a compensator for reinforcement learning that is more effective than conventional methods for environments with a time constant of a first-order time-delay element greater than the control cycle. The purpose of the compensator is to minimize the difference between actions in delayed environments and those not in delayed environments. Experiments reveal that the compensator increases rewards within wider ranges than conventional methods.

This work focuses mainly on wind energy usage as a renewable source for energy generation in urban environments, where the variability of air current flow is a challenge. One of the main objectives to be achieved in this study is to develop small vertical wind turbines. Design thinking methodology was used to innovative ideas development using the application of concepts from rapid prototyping (additive manufacturing). As a target object to idealize an innovative product, was the providing of a mobile equipment recharging system, using the air current generated by the urban public transport vehicles. As a result, a modular system of small power generation was produced, tested, and validated. The mini-turbine with the best performance in power generation in wind flows lower than 4 m/s was the VAWT, which achieved the smallest difference, 18 % greater. Therefore, it was demonstrated that the installation of small wind turbines in an urbanized area requires a minimum of wind measurements at the exact location to validate the innovative design.

Addressing the UN SDGs in sustainability reports: An analysis of Latin American oil and gas companies

This article aims to establish an overview of the sustainable practices developed by the major oil and gas enterprises in Latin America and analyse how these practices are related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7, 9, 11 and 12. The methodological strategy used was the content analysis of the sustainability reports published by companies in the sector. Considering the ten oil and gas companies with the highest revenue in Latin America, 7 of them published sustainability reports in 2020 (base 2019), and these reports were analysed via content analysis technique. The findings showed that 244 sustainable practices were reported in sustainability reports by these seven companies. These practices were summarised by twenty different keywords (the practice can be represented by more than one keyword) and related with the targets of SDGs 7, 9, 11 and 12. It was found that few practices were related with the following targets: (a) greater access of small-sized companies, especially from developing countries, to financial services (target 9.3), (b) encouragement of companies to use sustainable practices and add sustainability information in their reporting cycle (target 12.6) and (c) the rationalisation of inefficient fossil-fuel subsidies (target 12.c). However, one company stands out amongst its competitors, having practices that, on average, were related with a higher number of targets of SDGs 7, 9, 11 and 12. This research has an exploratory character. The information reported here is of great value in guiding CSR actions of companies in the oil and gas sector and future research in the area to discuss how such companies can contribute to targets 9.3, 12.6, and 12.c. © 2022

Chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based composite biofilm: The effect of solvent and nanofiller

Environmental issues are the most critical and urgent factor for the increasing use of biopolymers in broader applications. Research on chitosan as a bioplastic material opens vast opportunities to improve its weak mechanical properties. These include blending with biopolymer/synthetic polymers as a matrix or incorporating with nanofillers. The use of organic solvents in dissolving chitosan is also interesting for further research. In this study, we synthesized a chitosan/PVA-based biofilm composite in five different ratios (100/0, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60, 0/100) in acetic acid and citric acid with the addition of 10% weight glycerol to get the optimum composition of mechanical properties. This optimum film would be conducted with SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and Cellulose Nano Crystals (CNCs) to evaluate the reinforcement effects. Various properties, including surface morphology, functional, mechanical properties, and thermal behavior, were characterized. The experimental result showed that the tensile strength of the composite film in acetic acid was higher than in citric acid. With the addition of 2.5% w/w of SiO2 NPs, the tensile strength of the composite film got its maximum value, 21.01 MPa, and the maximum of 25.77 MPa with 10% w/w of CNCs, which was 115,7% higher than with of the pure chitosan/PVA film in the ratio of 80/20 which was the optimum. The effect of adding CNC and SiO2 NPS has the opposite effect. The addition of filler CNCs will improve mechanical properties, while SiO2 NPs tend to decrease mechanical properties. All film characterizations demonstrated that the physicochemical interaction between CNCs and chitosan/PVA molecules improved their mechanical and thermal properties.

Mung bean seeds decreased their viability very fast during storage, especially in tropical area without proper packaging. The purpose of this study is to observethe decrease in viability of mung bean seeds during storage and to build a mathematical model for shelf life prediction. Dried mung bean seeds were vacuum packed and stored in Accelerated Shelf-life Testing chamber at five different temperatures of 30° C, 35° C, 40° C, 45° C, 50° C with approximately 80% in relative humidity, to facilitate rapid deterioration with different rate of physical and chemical change in the seed. The results show that there was an increase in moisture content and the germination decreased in different rates. Changes in values for some parametersof the seeds affected the viabilty of the seeds during rapid deterioration. The value of constant (k)for viability decreasing was calculated and used to build the mathematical model for predicting the shelf life of mung bean seeds during storage at any temperature. Using the developed model, it was observed that the shelf life of the Sriti variety of mung bean seeds in vacuum packaging could maintain 90% of germination level for 421 days or 14.3 months if stored at 20 °C, and for 173.37 days or 5.78 months if stored at 25 °C. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Decreasing birth rates and an aging population in society often cause labor shortages in the manufacturing industry, making the development of methods to improve productivity based on limited human resources imperative. One way to achieve this is by enhancing product quality via the reduction of product losses and the consequent need for reassembly due to human error. Human error during assembly can arise from specific actions via the arms and fingers. We assumed that these errors can be captured based on the information on human skeletal models. The purpose of this study is to propose and develop a system that acquires information about assembly procedures by using human skeletal models, including the fingers of workers, and notifies them of skipped procedures and errors in part types. Further, we confirm the basic capability of the proposed system via experiments based on simulated assembly work. The proposed system monitors workers' motion based on color and depth images captured by a single RGB-D camera. In addition, we developed a function to detect the process and to point out errors with audible and visual feedbacks when errors were made by workers in assembly processes. In the experiment using simulated assembly work, the proposed system exhibited an accuracy rate of 98.3% with respect to acquisition of assembly processes. In the case of an error in an assembly process, the system was able to point out the error correctly and provide feedback to the worker before he had finished picking up the wrong part. In conclusion, we confirmed that the developed system exhibited the basic capability to acquire work procedures and efficiently point out errors in real time.

Smartphone sensors have been widely researched and published in literature by experts to be used in physics learning. This paper presents the use of smartphone sensors and applications as a measuring instrument in the classical sound wave experiment adapted from physics textbooks at school or university. Tone generator, sound meter, and audio autocorrelation were used in the experiment to visualize sound as a propagating vibration, sound waves as mechanical waves, characteristics of sound waves (loud and soft or high-pitched or low-pitched), sound range, and sound power. The experimental results presented are expected to help students understand the concept of sound waves.

The purpose of this research is to develop the wheelchair system for hemiplegic users. The proposed system is configured by the front wheel with active steering and hand rim for detecting user's driving force. The user's operational intention is distinguished by the sign and amplitude of force along the rotational axis of the hand rim. The steering angle of the front wheel is controlled by an actuator based on extracted intention from the hand rim. By proposed system, user can operate the wheelchair by using only single side hand rim. In particular, in this paper, we evaluate the designed hand rim by conducting some experiments. © 2019 IEEE.

The Cantang Grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus-lanceoulatus) is a mating of the female Tiger Grouper fish (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) and the male Kertang grouper fish (Epinephelus lanceoulatus). However, in farming activities, the Cantang Grouper fish can be affected by a VNN infection. One way to deal with the VNN infection is by giving recombinant nano-vaccine from the microalga Chlorella Vulgaris. This study aims to determine the effect of recombinant nano-vaccine administration of the microalgae Chlorella Vulgaris on the growth of the fish weight, length, and eye tissue in the Cantang grouper fish (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus lanceolatus) infected with Viral Nervous Necrosis (VNN). The method used in this study is experimental. The test results showed that the administration of the recombinant C. vulgaris (p-PerCv) vaccine affected the growth in length and weight of the Cantang grouper, this was because the growth in length and weight of its from the treatment group was significantly different from the control group (0.039<0.05). Known by the ANOVA test and also has a different effect on the level of damage to eye tissue both damage to hypertrophy, vacuolization, and necrosis. The results of the Tukey test showed that the treatment that had a significant effect was the T1 treatment (treatment of healthy fish +33l of recombinant C. vulgaris vaccine (p-PerCv) +8.5l of Chitosan nanoparticles).

This article aims to list environmental practices used by Latin American companies in the pulp and paper industry, to create a list, through a scientific method, that can direct other researchers and managers interested in the subject. The research strategies used were bibliographic research and content analysis. The content analysis used 36 sustainability reports published by Latin American companies in the industry between 2018 and 2019. Although 264 companies were mapped, only 36 of them presented sustainability report possible to be accessed. Through the sample of 36 sustainability reports, 36 sustainable environmental practices were identified that could be grouped into five groups, namely: (1) Reuse of waste, efficiency in the production process and effluents treatment;(2) Preservation and area recovery;(3) Energy efficiency;(4) Initiatives with stakeholders;(5) Control of gas emission. Despite the exploratory nature, the information presented here can be used by managers in the area and researchers interested in improving environmental practices of the pulp and paper industry. © 2021 The Author(s)
