FTIR analysis of alkali treatment on bacterial cellulose films obtained from pineapple peel juice

This study aimed to identify the functional group of bacterial cellulose films (BCF) treated by alkali (NaOH) solution. The research methods were BCF production using medium culture based on pineapple peel juice. The resulted pellicle was immersed in the alkali of 0%, 1%, 5%, and 10%. Pellicle was dried in the oven to obtain BCF. Functional group of the sample was recorded by an FTIR instrument. BCF surface was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The result shows that structure of BCF contains cellulose I and cellulose II. The functional group of BCF before and after the treatment were at wave number 3400 cm−1, 2900 cm−1, 2133 cm−1, 1635 cm−1, 1373 cm−1, 1067 cm−1. Alkali treatment caused the peak band at 2135 cm−1 to be reduced due to the breaking of the triple bond of alkynes.

The purpose of this research is to develop the wheelchair system for hemiplegic users. The proposed system is configured by the front wheel with active steering and hand rim for detecting user's driving force. The user's operational intention is distinguished by the sign and amplitude of force along the rotational axis of the hand rim. The steering angle of the front wheel is controlled by an actuator based on extracted intention from the hand rim. By proposed system, user can operate the wheelchair by using only single side hand rim. In particular, in this paper, we evaluate the designed hand rim by conducting some experiments.

This research investigates bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) composite reinforced with Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) in terms of morphology and membrane functional groups. Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide (CTAB) was used as a surfactant. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of addition CTAB on the membrane composite. Bacterial cellulose (BC) pellicle was produced from the extract of pineapple peel waste. Acetobacter xylinum was used as the fermentation agent. The solution of 1% NaOH was applied for removing the BC pellicle impurities. mechanical treatment and high pressure homogenize process had been done to synthesize BNC. The composite membranes were synthesized by using a mixture of BNC, TiO2 1%, and CTAB with different mass percentages, 0.5%, 1%, and 2%, and then the composite solution was dried by the oven for 14 hours at 80 °C. Properties of the composite membrane can be known based on its morphology and functional groups. Scanning Electron Microscope was used to observe the morphology. The results show that a higher concentration of CTAB makes BNC structure became more porous, and TiO2 particles spread more uniformly. FTIR analysis was conducted in range of 682cm-1, 862cm −1, 1041cm −1 and 3421 cm−1. Successively, they are the position of the C-OH, C-H, C-O-C, and O-H function clusters.

The ability for predicting the springback on sheet metal bending processes is identified as an important feature of the ability for predicting the final geometry of sheet metal parts. The grain size effect makes the difficult on application of traditional design method in processing. As through tool and processing design, to understand the effects of grain size effects is an important and powerful way to effectively compensate for and eliminate the springback. In this paper, 99.5% pure iron specimens were annealed at different temperature to obtain the specified grain sizes. The effects of different grain sizes on the saddle after V-bending of the thin sheet metal were investigated. The results show that at the same thickness of specimens, the grain size has no significant effect on the saddle height. However, with increasing the thickness of the specimens the saddle will also be more prominent protruding height. The concave side of bent specimen is against the compression force and its grains structure tend to a round shape, whereas the convex side is against the tensile force and its grains structure tend to a flaky shape. © 2018 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The coatings on fruits after harvested was applied to maintain the appearance and quality up to the consumer's hands. This study aimed to maintain color and reduce the level of decay of salak madu during storage. Salak madu was obtained from Madding Fresh, trader and supplier salak from Sleman, Yogyakarta. The salak was coated with Aloe vera gel (20% and 50%) and beeswax (3, 6, and 10%). All samples were stored at 25–28 °C. The parameters used to measure the effect of treatment are skin color, percentage of decay, and weight loss. Observations were carried out for 12 days. The results of this study were found that dyeing on a coating made from Aloe vera 50% was able to slow down weight loss and percentage of decay until the 6 days, while Aloe vera 30% was better at maintaining color changes during storage. Beeswax 3% coating can slow down discoloration and percentage of decay until 6 days of storage. Long-term storage (12 days) with beeswax 10% was better in maintaining changes in the quality of salak madu, while for short-term storage (6 days), beeswax 3% gives better results.

The population of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is growing and major cities are becoming increasingly crowded. Billions of dollars have been allocated to replace and maintain the existing infrastructure. This includes the installation, inspection, repair, and replacement of water supply, sewer, storm water, power, and telecommunication networks. Conventional open-trench methods to install new and rehabilitate existing utilities are expensive and lead to traffic disruption including road closures, traffic delays, detours resulting in noise and loss of access to homes and businesses, particularly in congested urban areas like Dubai and Abu Dhabi emirates. The UAE government is, therefore, looking at alternative methods for the installation, replacement, and maintenance of aging underground utilities. This paper will present the results of a questionnaire survey conducted among construction practitioners in the UAE representing municipalities, contractors, and design firms to elicit the current level of awareness of trenchless construction methods and their popularity as emerging technologies among construction practitioners across the country. Survey results provided an indication of the current and expected future trend in the application of trenchless technologies including the types currently employed. It also provided an idea on the percentage of projects that employed trenchless technologies or are willing to use these technologies in the future. A comparison of trenchless technology utilization now and in 2007 is also presented. The survey results revealed the current and potential future growth in utilizing trenchless methods and the expected average government expenditures for the construction of new utilities and the rehabilitation of existing ones. © Copyright© (2018) by American Society for engineering Management (ASEM). The cellulose extracts from plants are need of energy and have potential in damaging the environment so that an alternative cellulose source with more efficient results is by using bacteria to produce the cellulose fibers. This study aims to determine the effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) treatment on the structure and transparency of biopolymer bacterial cellulose film (BCF). The method used is the making of BCF by utilizing pineapple peel extract and then cooking at 80°C for 120 min. with H2O2 concentration of 0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 7,5%. Drying is done in the electric oven and then observed the structure and morphology using X-ray diffraction and transparency test, respectively. The result of structure observation shows that the intensity of the highest diffraction peak lies at a diffraction angle of 22° achieved at 5% peroxide treatment with crystallinity and crystal index of 85.1% and 82.4%, respectively. Transparency testing shows that the higher the concentration of peroxide used, the better the transparency. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2018.

Understanding the reliability of engineering methods is crucial for its adoption and deployment. This research focuses on the reliability of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) method via the use of the F statistic for damage detection. To the author best knowledge, the method is rather classic but its realibility has not been discussed in the context of a large data size. Priory, the research anticipates that the accuracy is a function of the damage level. In this study, we evaluate 3500 cases with five levels of structural integrity, namely, healthy condition and damaged conditions with 1%, 5%, 10%, and 20% damage levels. The dataset is established via a numerical analysis of a seven degree-of-freedom system loaded with a concentrated dynamic force with random magnitude. A spring on the system is reduced in its stiffness to simulate damages. Our significant findings are the following: it is challenging for the PSD-based method to differentiate the healthy condition from the damaged conditions when the damage level is small. However, the reliability is high at 95% probability when the structural integrity has dropped by five percent.

For damage detection, this research article discusses an easy-to-compute damage index derived from the governing dynamic of the structure that has potential practical application in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). The research uses simplified structural models to explore the sensitivity of the index to damages, to compare the index performance with a traditional but popular damage detection method, and to understand the local/global predictive capability of the index. The research uses two simple models, namely, single- and two-degree-of-freedom systems. The results suggest that the damage index is local, that can only monitor damages occurring near the points of measurements, but it is sensitive to damages, unlike the natural frequency, which is global but less sensitive.

This paper proposes the contactless measurement scheme using LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) and the modeling human body movment for the personal mobility interface including twisting motion. We have already proposed the saddle type human body motion interface. This interface uses not only conventional translational human motions but also twisting motion, namely it makes full use of the human motion characteristics. The mechanism of the interface consists of the saddle and universal joint connecting the saddle and personal mobility, and tracing loins motion. Due to these features, the proposed interface shows a potential to realize intuitive operation in the basic experiment. However, the problems have also remained: The height of the saddle should be adjuested for the users' height before riding on the PMV (Personal Mobility Vehicle). And there are plays between the saddle and buttocks of the user, and backlash of the saddle mechanism. This problem prevents a small human motion from measurment. This paper, therefore, proposes the contactless measurement using LIDAR and discusses the fitting methods from measured data points to human body movement. © 2018 IEEE.
