This paper propose a driving assistance scheme for a powered wheelchair with a force feedback function of its joystick. Generally, a powered wheelchair moves in a human coexistence environment such as a pedestrian way and it is important to move on these environments without a feeling of oppression to other people around it. Therefore, we propose a concept of a dynamic personal space which is a region surrounding a person who can feel comfortable psychologically to other person with a moving wheelchair in the pedestrian flows. A dynamic personal space is defined considering with a relative velocity and acceleration between the powered wheelchair and the pedestrians around it. Using this concept, we develop a driving assistance system using a force feedback of its joystick, which enables the powered wheelchair to move in a human coexistence environment without a feeling of oppression on other people. In this paper, we investigate spatial relationship with a powered wheelchair experimentally and define a dynamic personal space using these results. For verifying its effectiveness, the performance of our system is verified by experiments using our prototype. © 2014 IEEE.

Removal of hexavalent chromium in carbonic acid solution by oxidizing slag discharged from steelmaking process in electric arc furnace

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is well-known to be a strong oxidizer, and is recognized as a carcinogen. Therefore, it is regulated for drinking water, soil, groundwater and sea by the environmental quality standards all over the world. In this study, it was attempted to remove Cr(VI) ion in a carbonic acid solution by the oxidizing slag that was discharged from the normal steelmaking process in an electric arc furnace. After the addition of the slag into the aqueous solution contained Cr(VI) ion, concentrations of Cr(VI) ion and total chromium (Cr(VI) + trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) ions decreased to lower detection limit of them. Therefore, the used slag could reduce Cr(VI) and fix Cr(III) ion on the slag. While Cr(VI) ion existed in the solution, iron did not dissolve from the slag. From the relation between predicted dissolution amount of iron(II) ion and amount of decrease in Cr(VI) ion, the Cr(VI) ion did not react with iron(II) ion dissolved from the slag. Therefore, Cr(VI) ion was removed by the reductive reaction between Cr(VI) ion and the iron(II) oxide (FeO) in the slag. This reaction progressed on the newly appeared surface of iron(II) oxide due to the dissolution of phase composed of calcium etc., which existed around iron(II) oxide grain in the slag.

Study of the Aerodynamic Characteristic and Flight Trajectories in a Tail Fin-stabilized Projectile with Different Shapes

This study adopted computational fluid dynamics (CFD), low speed wind tunnel experiments and the MATLAB/Simulink control software to analyze the aerodynamic attributes of a tail fin-stabilized projectile with two different shapes (prototype and improved type) and subsequently simulate its flight trajectory with four degrees of freedom under a flight condition 0.6 Mach. Comparing the CFD calculation results with the revised experiment data using the Karman-Tsien Rule showed that the aerodynamic coefficients CD, CL, CM and CMα were similar within an angle of attack between -8°∼8°. The two types of projectile further demonstrated excellent aerodynamics within an angle of attack between -8°∼8°, maintaining stable flight. Furthermore, comparing the four-degrees-of-freedom simulation results with data from the firing table showed that the maximum height difference of trajectories at varying angles of elevation (mil) ranged under 4.68%, and the difference in the firing range distance ranged under 5.72%. Compare two types of projectiles launched at a 45° in elevation, the improved type increased 26.83% range distance than prototype. To reduce the costs of field testing, this study establishes a method to design aerodynamic systems, analyze and compare flow fields, and simulate flight trajectories.

This paper investigates, as a first step for visual feedback bilateral control, visual motion observer-based bilateral attitude and position control for eye-in-hand mobile robot teleoperation systems. Firstly, visual motion observers for eye-in-hand mobile robots are presented. Then, a visual motion observer-based bilateral and coordination control laws for attitude maneuvers are proposed. Moreover, visual motion observer-based bilateral position control and stability analysis are presented. The main contribution of this paper is to show that the bilateral control framework in which teleoperation systems utilize visual information to obtain the relative poses of the master and slave robots can be provided based on passivity. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed framework is verified through computer simulations and experiments.

This paper investigates passivity-based pose control via an obstacle avoidance navigation function for three-dimensional (3-D) eye-in-hand visual feedback systems. Firstly, visual motion observer-based pose control for 3-D eye-in-hand visual feedback systems is presented. Next, a path planner to be appropriate for the visual motion error system is designed through an obstacle avoidance navigation function to keep collision-free during servoing. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through computer simulations. © 2012 IEEE.

Repetition establishes a relationship with the listeners that is emotionally satisfying to our brains, and breeds a pleasure and memorable listening experience. In this paper, we present a soundscape linkage databank system which assists listeners to select music and lead to a chain of music clip with similar emotion. In the condition of choosing the melody by emotion, the autocorrelation function is applied for analyzing the period of the repeating musical structure which includes the Intro, Verse, and the Chorus. Then using this repeating musical structure to analyze the ingredients of music emotion by feature-weighted scoring algorithms and calculate the similarity of emotion between any two segments of the repeating musical structure to rank the resembling music. The study also demarcates the boundaries of four emotions in the emotion plane by Gaussian mixture model, and draws the locus of emotions evoked by musical signals. Preliminary evaluations indicate that the proposed algorithms produce results agreed approximately.
