This paper investigates passivity-based pose control via an obstacle avoidance navigation function for three-dimensional (3-D) eye-in-hand visual feedback systems. Firstly, visual motion observer-based pose control for 3-D eye-in-hand visual feedback systems is presented. Next, a path planner to be appropriate for the visual motion error system is designed through an obstacle avoidance navigation function to keep collision-free during servoing. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through computer simulations. © 2012 IEEE.

Repetition establishes a relationship with the listeners that is emotionally satisfying to our brains, and breeds a pleasure and memorable listening experience. In this paper, we present a soundscape linkage databank system which assists listeners to select music and lead to a chain of music clip with similar emotion. In the condition of choosing the melody by emotion, the autocorrelation function is applied for analyzing the period of the repeating musical structure which includes the Intro, Verse, and the Chorus. Then using this repeating musical structure to analyze the ingredients of music emotion by feature-weighted scoring algorithms and calculate the similarity of emotion between any two segments of the repeating musical structure to rank the resembling music. The study also demarcates the boundaries of four emotions in the emotion plane by Gaussian mixture model, and draws the locus of emotions evoked by musical signals. Preliminary evaluations indicate that the proposed algorithms produce results agreed approximately.

This paper investigates stabilizing receding horizon control via an obstacle avoidance navigation function for three-dimensional (3-D) eye-to-hand visual feedback systems. Firstly, a visual motion observer for a controlled mobile robot is presented. Then, visual motion observer-based stabilizing receding horizon control for 3-D visual feedback systems, highly nonlinear and relatively fast systems, is proposed. Moreover, a path planner to be appropriate for the visual motion error system is designed through an obstacle avoidance navigation function to keep collision-free during servoing. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through computer simulations.

He helped create MIT's renowned INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN COURSE. Flowers also received national recognition in his role as host for the PBS television series Scientific American Frontiers from 1990 to 1993 and received a New England EMMY Award for a special PBS program on design. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering and has received three honorary doctorates. He is a MacVicar Faculty Fellow for extraordinary contributions to undergraduate education at MIT where he is a member of the faculty advisory committee for MITX the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange. He was also the inaugural recipient of the Woodie Flowers Award from FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). He recently received the Edward F. Church Medal and the Spira Outstanding Design Educator Award from ASME. Currently Flowers is a director or scientific advisor for four companies. He is also national advisor and chairman of the executive advisor board for FIRST. Has been managing director of the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University (also known as the d.school) since 2010. Previously she worked in the innovation practice of Monitor Group in the US and India and advised multinational companies on developing innovation capabilities. This paper investigates open-loop control, which does not need the joint angles and velocities, for two degree of freedom(2DOF) robot manipulators with antagonistic bi-articular muscles which are passing over adjacent two joints and acting the both joints simultaneously. The manipulator dynamics of three muscle torques, we call the bi-articular manipulator dynamics, is constructed in order to design the control input. Stability analysis with respect to our proposed control law is discussed based on the Lyapunov method. Our approach is inspired by the fact that humans do not measure the joint angles and velocities explicitly, Finally, simulation results are shown in order to confirm the proposed method and given a design procedure in order to assign the tuning parameter.

The light guide rod (LGR) has been popularly used for the vehicles, and the automobile lamp industries need mass production to match this trend. This paper aims to develop a systemic way to find the best parameters' combination for the LGR, and the parameters are usually restricted to some levels and random values. In this paper, the LGR example with two optical performances of illuminance flux and uniformity is to be optimized by use of the real-coded genetic algorithm (RGA) and grey relational analysis (GRA). The illuminance flux and uniformity of the best parameters' combination are obtained and compared with the initial set. Comparisons with Taguchi-Grey can improve 5% of gain and comparisons with Pareto genetic algorithm (PaGA) can improve 1.7% of gain. The combined multi-objective optimization can saving 7% time and it is found that the new proposed method has positive gains in performances.

In this paper, a robot hand with two fingers, thumb and index finger, aiming at application to a myoelectric prosthetic hand was built to implement fundamental motions, such as grasping and holding, required in daily life. In order to control each finger of the developed robot hand independently, an identifier which recognizes the finger motions based on the surface EMG using the neural networks was constructed, and recognition rate of the finger motions was examined. Experiment for online finger operation of the built robot hand was carried out using the identifier, and fingers of the robot hand were able to be operated as intended. © 2011 IEEE.

Elution of zinc in dust discharged from electric arc furnace in carbonic acid solution

The dust discharged from an electric arc furnace (EAF) is a valuable resource of zinc. As a fundamental study of extraction of zinc, iron and chlorine in the EAF dust, the elution behavior of them in carbonic acid solution was studied. The influence of the weight of the EAF dust on the elution behavior was examined in this study. Experiment was carried out putting the EAF dust from 1 g to 200 g in weight into 1 L of water that was introduced by CO2. Generally, the pH in the aqueous solution increased with an increase in weight of the additive EAF dust. Maximums of the eluted concentrations of zinc and chloride ion increased with an increase in the weight of the additive EAF dust whereas the extraction ratios of both of them decreased with an increase in the weight of the additive EAF dust. Iron in the EAF dust remained in the dust without elution. The limit of extraction of zinc from the EAF dust to water was given by the solubilities of ZnFe2O4 and ZnO expressed by eq. (6) and eq. (9) respectively.

Under hypersonic flow environment, the aero-optical side window of optical guidance missile will trigger aero-thermodynamic effects causing high heat and cracks to optical windows which eventually leads to failure of optical windows. This study uses computational fluid dynamic as a tool to simulate hypersonic flow, optical side window cooling and jet flow design. Simulation results show that cooling effect with surface temperature less than 500K can be achieved when the external cooling jet flow reaches 0.125kg/s, thus meeting the needs of weight-bearing projectile. Since the optical side windows are located at leeward, greater angle of attack (AOA 30) will result in a better cooling effect of the flow field under the condition with the present of AOA. Besides, the groove temperature for optical side window is similar to the temperature of cooling jet. © 2011 IEEE.
