作者: Albero, M. The Author graduated from Lafayette College in 1957 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. Upon graduation he was assigned to USS NEWPORT NEWS (CA-148) followed by a tour as Chief Engineer of the USS DUPONT (DD-941). From June 1962 to June 1965 he attended a postgraduate course in Mechanical Engineering at the United States Naval Postgraduate School Monterey California and was awarded a Master of Science degree. While at the postgraduate school the work described in this paper was performed as a thesis and was supported by the Office of Naval Research through the Foundation Research Program of the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School. He is currently serving as Planning and Estimating Officer in the office of the Supervisor of Shipbuilding U. S. Navy Bath Maine. He is a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers Sigma Xi and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

作者: AZIZ, ABDUL THE AUTHOR was born in East Pakistan on January 31 1932 received the Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Dacca University in Pakistan in 1952 and the Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Michigan State University in 1953. He did further graduate work at MIT Columbia and Johns Hopkins Universities and is now a candidate for the doctoral degree at the University of Maryland. He joined the Department of Navy in March 1966 with the Naval Ship Research and Development Center Annapolis Division where he worked on the MESA (Machinery Effectiveness Systems Analysis) Program sponsored by the Navy Ship Systems Command. The present paper is largely based on a 138-page report entitled “Systems Effectiveness in the United States Navy” on the works of the MESA Program. Currently he is assigned to the Naval Research Laboratory to provide inhouse engineering support in the development and analysis of systems and their components for the conduct of fundamental research in Astronomy and Astrophysics by the Laboratory. Prior to joining the Department of Navy he worked for General Electric Cdmpany in the analysis and development of large steam turbine components and for Burns & Roe Corporation in systems design and analysis for power plants both fossil powered and nuclear. With Burns & Roe he participated in the systems effectiveness analysis of the Army PM-3A nuclear power plant in the Antarctica. He received the United States citizenship in January 1966 is a member of the ASME and the U.S. Naval Institute.

FIORITI, IVO VASTA, JOHN Captain Heller an Engineering Duty Officer of the United States Navy received his undergraduate education at the University of Michigan in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and in Mathematics. Following typical shipyard duty during World War II he received postgraduate instruction at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology leading to the degrees of Naval Engineer and Doctor of Science in Naval Architecture. Since then he has had design responsibilities in the Bureau of Ships had a maintenance assignment with the Fleet directed structural research at the David Taylor Model Basin engaged in submarine design and construction at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and is now Head of Hull Design in the Bureau of Ships. Captain Heller is a member of ASNE SNAME Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi. Mr. Fioriti is the Materials Engineer in the Hull Scientific and Research Section Bureau of Ships with responsibility for materials and fabrication processes that are used in the construction of ship hulls. Mr. Fioriti attended the University of Pittsburgh receiving the Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1951. He took postgraduate work at the University of Maryland receiving the Master of Science degree in 1960. From 1951 to 1956 he worked in the Metals and Metallurgy Section of the Bureau of Ships where he planned and administered research programs on metals for ships. He was associated intimately with the development of HY-80 steel and prepared the first specification used for its procurement by the Navy. In addition he was responsible for the development of dimpled armor plate for aircraft carrier flight decks. In 1956 he assumed his present position where he has been active in the Ship Structure Committee research program the low cycle fatigue structural program and the hydrofoil materials research program. David Berg a native of Michigan received his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Michigan Technological University in 1951 after which he began his career with the Bureau of Ships in the Machinery Design Branch on noise shock and vibration problems. He was project engineer for the axial flow pumpjet development on USS Witek (DD848) and USS Glover (AGDE1) and received his Master of Engineering Degree in Naval Architecture in 1964 from the University of California Berkeley. Mr. Berg is currently acting head of the Ship Performance and Trials Section of the Propulsion Systems Analysis Branch in the Naval Ship Engineering Center. He received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1962 for contributions to the design of the USS Thresher (SSN593) and was awarded the Superior Performance Award for Outstanding Performance in 1966. Hugh Marron a native of Pennsylvania received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 1939. Upon graduation he was employed for one year with the Pennsylvania Department of Highways as a construction engineer. In July 1940 he became a Marine Engineer at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard where after a period of apprenticeship and special training in this new field he was assigned to the Machinery Scientific Group of the Design Division. Then in October 1945 he was transferred to the Design Division of the Bureau of Ships. Mr. Marron is now a Project Coordinator in the Propulsion Power and Auxiliary Systems Division of the Naval Ship Engineering Center. Walter S. Jones a native of Virginia graduated from the George Washington University with a BME in June 1958. From July of that year through June 1965 he served with the Machinery Design Branch of the Bureau of Ships where he was Project Engineer for the Hydroneu-matic Ram Jet and Water jet Propulsion Systems. Mr. Jones is currently the Machinery Coordinator for the Computer Aided Ship Design Program in the Naval Ship Engineering Center.

Mr. Vasta attended New York University receiving the Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1930 and took postgraduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology receiving the Master of Science degree in 1931. He worked in the Structural Mechanics Group of the U. S. Experimental Model Basin from 1931 to 1938. After a short duty at the Headquarters of the U. S. Coast Guard he joined the U. S. Maritime Commission where between 1939 and 1948 he held various positions of responsibility in the Technical Division. Subsequently he joined the former Bureau of Ships first as Head of the Scientific and Research Section from 1948 to 1964 and later as Assistant Chief Naval Architect for Engineering Sciences in the Naval Ship Engineering Center from 1965 to 1966. Mr. Vasta is a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineering and of the American Welding Society and is active in many research panels and committees including the Ship Structure Committee and panels in the Welding Research Council. He was subsequently employed at General Dynamics/Electric Boat Division Groton Connecticut where he held positions in their Planning Department as a planning engineer for FBM Submarine Construction and in the Mechanical Division as a design engineer. Motherway went to the Naval Ship Engineering Center Washington D. C. in March of 1966 with the Submarine Hydraulics Section of the Hull Design Branch where he participated in the design of submarine hydraulic systems. He later transferred to the Ocean Engineering Section of the Deck Systems Branch where he participated in design related to deep submergence vehicles and ocean salvage and retrieval systems. He obtained his master's degree in Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern in 1955. Since that time he has been working at the General Electric Advanced Technology Laboratories in Schenectady New York. He has been active in the fields of hydraulics pneumatics optics mechanics and underwater component and system design. He developed an optical-mechanical portion of the Polaris fire control system. His underwater activities have included sonobuoy evaluations testing of space vehicle recovery equipment and direction of the buoy development work discussed in this paper. He has written several technical papers published by the Society of Automotive Engineers Design News Machine Design and the American Society of Naval Engineers. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers the American Society of Naval Engineers and the Marine Technology Society. He is a Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the States of Illinois and New York.

作者: PRITZLAFF, JOHN A. The author attended Northwestern University under the regular NROTC program. After graduation in 1951 he served on board the USS Charles J. Badger DD657. His duties included Torpedo Officer Main Propulsion Assistant and Engineer Officer. He obtained his master's degree in Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University in 1955. While working as a Mechanical Engineer for the General Electric Company he has been active in the fields of hydraulics pneumatics and mechanical component design. He also developed an optical-mechanical portion of POLARIS fire control system. His underwater activities include sonobuoy development and test work as well as the development of an experimental underwater component deployment vehicle. Tests on this vehicle were made in conjunction with various Naval Laboratories and test stations. He is a Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve and a licensed professional engineer in the States of Illinois and New York.

作者: WOSSER, J.L. The author is program manager for all air cushion vehicle (ACV) projects of Textron's Bell Aerosystems Company Buffalo New York. A veteran of 20 years in the U. S. Marine Corps Wosser retired in 1963 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Since September 1958 Wosser has served as head of the Air Vehicle Design Branch of the Office of Naval Research in Washington D.C. In this post he was responsible for planning coordinating managing and providing technical supervision of a multi-million dollar contractor program of research and exploratory development. These programs included research in vertical/short takeoff and landing test vehicles and air cushion vehicles. Wosser authored some of the first technical papers on air cushion vehicles published in the United States beginning in 1958 when ACVs were in their infancy. Currently he is active in the administration of the several ACV projects conducted by Bell. Included are: the U. S. Navy's SKMR-1 Hydroskimmer and Bell/Westland SR.N5 air cushion vehicle test and mission suitability trials now going on at the U. S. Navy's Norfolk Va. base preparations for the first year-round ACV scheduled passenger service set to begin this summer in the San Francisco-Oakland area and two hydrokeel military amphibious assault projects. A native of Mill Valley Calif. Wosser became a Naval aviation cadet in 1943 after studying mechanical engineering at the University of California. During his 20 years as a Marine pilot Wosser accumulated 3600 hours of flight time including 350 combat hours. He holds a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and bachelor of science degrees in military science and aeronautical engineering respectively from the University of Maryland and the U. S. Navy Postgraduate School.
