Wireless technology gradual growth in the latest years has facilitated it to bridge its applications operated extensively in many types of industry. Wireless sensor network (WSN) technology brings several benefits over traditional wired technology by reason of the lower cost, immense flexibility escalation, and scalability which is able to be obtained from the old-style one. However, in its application WSN still experience some constraints on resource limitations in the form: processor, memory and energy, and any more challenges that related to availability, reliability and security. Based on its benefits, limitation, and challenges, and also three systematic stages, the review study was performed. The result of study was portrayed in this paper. It is regarding investigation result of hybrid cryptography (HC, as one of defense methods) realized for WSN to methodically increase the security level and decrease the resources usage. The result concluded that HC was proven in escalating the security defense level and downgrading the resources use on WSN compared to symmetric and asymmetric algorithms.

Carnatic Music, a form of classical music prevalent in South India, has a central concept called rāgas, defined as melodic scales and/or a set of characteristic melodic phrases. These definitions also account for the continuous pitch movement in gamakas and micro-tonal adjustments to pitch values. In this paper, we present several statistics of gamakas to arrive at a model of Carnatic music. We draw upon the two-component model of Carnatic Music, which splits it into a slowly varying 'stage' and a detail, called 'dance'. Based on the statistics, we propose slightly altered definitions of two similar components called constant-pitch notes and transients. An automated implementation of these definitions is used in collecting statistics from 84 concert renditions. We then suggest that the constant-pitch notes and transients can be considered as context and detail respectively of the rāga, but add that both are necessary for defining the rāga. This is verified by performing listening tests on only the constant-pitch notes and transients independently. © 2019 Venkata Subramanian Viraraghavan, R Aravind, Hema A Murthy.

As digital systems get ever more complex, their behaviour may at times appear unfathomable. Users will only be prepared to accept this if they are convinced that the system does indeed work correctly. Thus, we argue the need for self-explaining systems: systems that are able to explain their behaviour, and the reasons for it. In this paper, we propose first steps towards a design methodology for such systems, and argue that beyond user acceptance, self-explanation also has other applications such as self-verification and reconfiguration. We propose a conceptual framework for self-explaining systems, discuss how to achieve completeness, and consider implementation aspects.

Authoring protocols for manual tasks such as following recipes, manufacturing processes, or laboratory experiments requires a significant effort. This paper presents a system that estimates individual procedure transitions from the user's physical movement and gestures recorded with inertial motion sensors. Combined with egocentric or external video recordings this facilitates efficient review and annotation of video databases. We investigate different clustering algorithms on wearable inertial sensor data recorded on par with video data, to automatically create transition marks between task steps. The goal is to match these marks to the transitions given in a description of the workflow, thus creating navigation cues to browse video repositories of manual work. To evaluate the performance of unsupervised clustering algorithms, the automatically generated marks are compared to human-expert created labels on publicly available datasets. Additionally, we tested the approach on a novel data set in a manufacturing lab environment, describing an existing sequential manufacturing process. © 2017 Association for Computing Machinery.

Online scheduling of operations is essential to optimize productivity of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) where manufacturing requests arrive on the fly. An FMS processes products according to a particular flow through processing stations. This work focusses on online scheduling of re-entrant FMSs with flows using processing stations where products pass twice and with limited buffering between processing stations. This kind of FMS is modelled as a re-entrant flow shop with due dates and sequence-dependent set-up times. Such flow shops can benefit from minimization of the time penalties incurred from set-up times. On top of an existing greedy scheduling heuristic we apply a meta-heuristic that simultaneously explores several alternatives considering trade-offs between the used metrics by the scheduling heuristic. We identify invariants to efficiently remove many infeasible scheduling options so that the running time of online implementations is improved. The resulting algorithm is much faster than the state of the art and produces schedules with on average 4.6% shorter makespan. © 2017 ACM.

Increased deployment of wind generation, with the characteristics of randomness and intermittent, has adverse effects on inter-connected power system frequency stability. By considering wind power deviation, this paper improves the area control error (ACE) model to address the frequency fluctuation caused by wind disturbances. Specifically, new control variables are introduced into the ACE model, therefore to provide much more informative inputs for the automatic generation control (AGC) system. Based on this ACE model, two intelligent control methods are proposed and compared. The first method is fuzzy logic based PI controller, in which the parameters are updated according to the range of frequency offset. The other method is fuzzy logic based goal representation heuristic dynamic programming (Fuzzy-GrHDP), in which adaptive supplementary control signals are generated in an online manner. Simulation study is carried out on a two-area benchmark system with wind power penetration. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods for frequency oscillation damping under different system operating conditions.

In this paper, coordinated sliding mode control (SMC) and adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) strategy is proposed for near-space aerospace vehicle (NSASV) adaptive attitude tracking control. In this design, the NSASV attitude angle control is implemented as classical cascade control scheme with two control loops in the model. The outer one is a slow control loop for the attitude angle tracking, and the inner one is a fast control loop for the attitude angular rate tracking. Both of these two control loops are designed by using SMC, which can provide exact control performance near the operating point. To improve the control performance and robustness under parameter variations and external disturbances, ADP based supplementary control is introduced and incorporated into the inner fast control loop to provide adaptive compensation for the reference signal. Simulation study is carried out in Matlab/Simulink environment, and the results demonstrate that the proposed cooperative control could provide quite satisfied tracking performance in terms of overshoot and oscillation.

I/O is becoming one of major performance bottlenecks in NAND-flash-based mobile devices. Novel nonvolatile memories (NVMs), such as phase change memory and spin-transfer torque random access memory, can provide fast read/write operations. In this paper, we propose a unified NVM/flash architecture to improve the I/O performance. A transparent scheme, virtualized flash (vFlash), is also proposed to manage the unified architecture. Within vFlash, interapp and intra-app techniques are proposed to optimize the application performance by exploiting the historical locality and I/O access patterns of applications. Since vFlash is on the bottom of the I/O stack, the application features will be lost. Therefore, we also propose a cross-layer technique to transfer the application information from the application layer to the vFlash layer. The proposed scheme is evaluated based on an Android platform, and the experimental results show that the proposed scheme can effectively improve the I/O performance of mobile devices. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

In this paper, a novel framework for dynamic event monitoring in smart grid with synchrophasor data is proposed. The fundamental principle is that the nonstationary signatures of any dynamic event in the system will be captured by the data set collected from the phase measurement units (PMUs). The framework is performed in three steps: 1) Energy function components construction by using PMU data. Each of the component in the energy function, such as the load, transmission line, and generation, are formulated explicitly;2) Unsupervised feature learning and fusion by using the energy function components. In the feature learning stage, stacked autoencoders (SAE) is used to learn representative features from each component. Then in the feature fusion stage, a shared representation between modalities is further learned;and 3) Supervised classifier training and online application. Classifier, such as a simple neural network, is trained for monitoring the system dynamics to detect and classify events. Compared with purely data-driven methods, the proposed framework utilizes the physical basis to understand and correlate the features with different events. Meanwhile, because of learning features automatically and adaptively, the proposed method reduces the need of human labor and can be more easy to process big data in smart grid. Simulation is carried out on IEEE 39-bus system, and the results show promising effectiveness on dynamic event detection and classification.

Gamakas are an integral aspect of Carnatic Music, a form of classical music prevalent in South India. They are used in rāgas, which may be seen as melodic scales and/or a set of characteristic melodic phrases. Gamakas exhibit continuous pitch variation often spanning several semitones. In this paper, we study how gamakas scale with tempo and propose a novel approach to change the tempo of Carnatic music pieces. The music signal is viewed as consisting of constant-pitch segments and transients. The transients show continuous pitch variation and we consider their analyses from a theoretical stand-point. We next observe the non-uniform ratios of time-scaling of constantpitch segments, transients and silence in excerpts from nine concert renditions of varn. ams in six rāgas. The results indicate that the changing tempo of Carnatic music does not change the duration of transients significantly. We report listening tests on our algorithm to slow down Carnatic music that is consistent with this observation. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.
