A multi-cluster tool is composed of a number of single-cluster tools linked by buffering modules. The capacity of a buffering module can be one or two. Aiming at finding an optimal one-wafer cyclic schedule, this work explores the effect of two-space buffering modules on the performance of a multi-cluster tool. The tool is modeled by a kind of Petri nets. The dynamic behavior of robot waiting and tasks, process modules, and buffers is well captured by the net model. With the model, this work shows that there is always a one-wafer cyclic schedule that reaches the lower bound of the cycle time of a process-dominant tool. Furthermore, a constant-time algorithm is revealed to find such a schedule for the first time for such multi-cluster tools. An illustrative example is given to show the application and power of this new method.

To apply model-based design to embedded systems that interface with the physical world, including simulation and verification, current tools fall short. They must provide mathematical (model) definitions that stay close to the specification of the system. They must allow multiple domains, such as the continuous-time, discrete-time and dataflow domain, in a single model including well-defined interaction. They must support model transformations for refining a model during development. And most importantly, they must accurately include and simulate different notions of time in the model. UniTi is a model-based design flow and modelling and simulation environment that delivers on all these aspects. It is based on components that are signal transformations, and therefore mathematical functions. However, in each domain the representation of a signal differs. As components have the same structure in each domain, we can use unified composition operators to represent multiple domains in a single model. Furthermore, this composition provides a unified perspective on time in the domains, even though we differentiate between different notions of time. Time becomes a local property of the model, allowing us to represent and simulate time transformations such as time delays exactly without losing efficiency. Finally, model transformations are defined for such components, which are used for refining and developing the model and which are guided by the design steps in the design flow. We will formally define the domains, composition operators and transformations of UniTi and verify the approach with a case study on a phased array beamforming system. © 2012 Springer science+Business Media New York.

A key component of robotic path planning for monitoring dynamic events is reliable navigation to the right place at the right time. For persistent monitoring applications (e.g., over months), marine robots are beginning to make use of the environment for propulsion, instead of depending on traditional motors and propellers. These vehicles are able to realize dramatically higher endurance by exploiting wave and wind energy, however the path planning problem becomes difficult as the vehicle speed is no longer directly controllable. In this paper, we examine Gaussian process models to predict the speed of the Wave Glider autonomous surface vehicle from observable environmental parameters. Using training data from an on-board sensor, and wave parameter forecasts from the WAVEWATCH III model, our probabilistic regression models create an effective method for predicting Wave Glider speed for use in a variety of path planning applications.

Argumentation-based safety assurance is a promising approach for the development of safe softwareintensive medical devices. However, one challenge is safety assessment by an independent authority. This article presents an approach that enables argumentation-based safety development on the one hand, while providing means for assessing the product's safety afterwards on the other hand. We combine a generic safety case with an engineering model, which results in specific quality questions for assessors and provides a generic argumentation structure for manufacturers. © 2013 IEEE.

In an engine control unit two types of tasks are executed. On the one hand the time-triggered tasks, which are activated periodically after a specific amount of time has elapsed. On the other hand engine-triggered tasks, which are activated whenever the engine arrives at a specific angular position. In consequence the frequency that an engine-triggered task is activated changes with the speed of the engine. Additionally, the execution time of both time triggered and engine-triggered tasks may also depend on the speed of the engine. The existing methods of real-time analysis are not capable of addressing this behavior adequately. In this paper we present a sufficient real-time analysis for an engine control unit. The analysis considers the changing speed of the engine over time and subsequently the changing frequency of task activations in conjunction with the varying execution times. © 2013 ACM.

The herein presented research is motivated by the need for reconfigurable, flexible computing arrays targeted at streaming applications that contain a large degree of instruction-level parallelism. Such arrays are usually referred to as coarse-grained reconfigurable arrays (CGRAs). CGRAs are composed of small, reconfigurable cores that are interconnected to form a computing grid. Here, we present a complete CGRA, consisting of an architecture and a programming language. Both the architecture and the programming language are inspired by the principles found in dataflow.

The increasing demand for low-power and high-performance multimedia embedded systems has motivated the need for effective solutions to satisfy application bandwidth and latency requirements under a tight power budget. As technology scales, it is imperative that applications are optimized to take full advantage of the underlying resources and meet both power and performance requirements. We propose MultiMaKe, an application mapping design flow capable of discovering and enabling parallelism opportunities via code transformations, efficiently distributing the computational load across resources, and minimizing unnecessary data transfers. Our approach decomposes the application's tasks into smaller units of computations called kernels, which are distributed and pipelined across the different processing resources. We exploit the ideas of inter-kernel data reuse to minimize unnecessary data transfers between kernels, early execution edges to drive performance, and kernel pipelining to increase system throughput. Our experimental results on JPEG and JPEG2000 show up to 97% off-chip memory access reduction, and up to 80% execution time reduction over standard mapping and task-level pipelining approaches. © 2013 ACM.

An important aspect of robotic path planning for is ensuring that the vehicle is in the best location to collect the data necessary for the problem at hand. Given that features of in- terest are dynamic and move with oceanic cur- rents, vehicle speed is an important factor in any planning exercises to ensure vehicles are at the right place at the right time. Here, we examine different Gaussian process models to find a suitable predictive kinematic model that enable the speed of an underactuated, au- tonomous surface vehicle to be accurately pre- dicted given a set of input environmental pa-rameters.

Simulation is the state-of-the-art analysis technique for distributed thermal management schemes. Due to the numerous parameters involved and the distributed nature of these schemes, such non-exhaustive verification may fail to catch functional bugs in the algorithm or may report misleading performance characteristics. To overcome these limitations, we propose a methodology to perform formal verification of distributed dynamic thermal management for many-core systems. The proposed methodology is based on the SPIN model checker and the Lamport timestamps algorithm. Our methodology allows specification and verification of both functional and timing properties in a distributed many-core system. In order to illustrate the applicability and benefits of our methodology, we perform a case study on a state-of-the-art agent-based distributed thermal management scheme.
