This paper deals with the diagnosis of electrical defects of Squirrel-Cage Rotor Induction Machines (IMs). The failures of induction machine and the diagnosis methods are presented. Among the methods, Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA) is used in the experimental study to detect broken rotor bars and end-ring segment. The load level and the load effects on the diagnosis are also studied. Support vector machines (SVM) is applied to classify faults.

In the current era of technology, the Internet and web technologies become the center source of information. Due to the huge amount of contents, one of the main challenges of modern information technology is aimed at how to reduce and manage information in a structured way with mobilizing users to the similar kind of relevant information. So, any intelligent system should be able to understand people's interest about a particular type of information and automatically mobilize him to the similar kind of available information sources. The idea of high level Activity Streams along with its standardized format can play a vital role to solve this problem in the broader context. This paper introduces a novel system called CoASGen (Consolidation and Activity Streams Generator) which is able to automatically generate high level Activity Streams after aggregating and consolidating from different independent systems (e.g. in a software company context: version management system, wikis, bug trackers etc.). It retrieves life time information as heterogeneous web feed by sensing user activities from those independent systems and then it transforms several similar types of atomic activities into high level Activity Streams using semantic technologies along with its specific standardized format. Finally, it shows these high level Activity Streams to the user interface which is able to automatically motivate users to find relevant information easily without either missing any data or losing valuable time. This system solves the problem "data silos" by reducing and managing information in a structured way. © 2011 IEEE.

Traditionally, mechanically steered dishes or analog phased array beamforming systems have been used for radio frequency receivers, where strong directivity and high performance were much more important than low-cost requirements. Real-time controlled digital phased array beamforming could not be realized due to the high computational requirements and the implementation costs. Today, digital hardware has become powerful enough to perform the massive number of operations required for real-time digital beamforming. With the continuously decreasing price per transistor, high performance signal processing has become available by using multi-processor architectures. More and more applications are using beamforming to improve the spatial utilization of communication channels, resulting in many dedicated digital architectures for specific applications. By using a reconfigurable architecture, a single hardware platform can be used for different applications with different processing needs. In this article, we show how a reconfigurable multi-processor system-on-chip based architecture can be used for phased array processing, including an advanced tracking mechanism to continuously receive signals with a mobile satellite receiver. An adaptive beamformer for DVB-S satellite reception is presented that uses an Extended Constant Modulus Algorithm to track satellites. The receiver consists of 8 antennas and is mapped on three reconfigurable Montium TP processors. With a scenario based on a phased array antenna mounted on the roof of a car, we show that the adaptive steering algorithm is robust in dynamic scenarios and correctly demodulates the received signal. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. A new direction in short-range wireless applications has appeared in the form of high-speed data communication devices for distances of a few meters. Behind these embedded applications, a complex Hardware/Software architecture is built. Dependability is one of the major challenges in these systems. Obviously in such systems, the attribute reliability has to be investigated for various components and at different abstractions levels. This paper presents a hardware platform for wireless system dependability analysis as an alternative for the time consuming global system simulation technique. The platform is built using several instances of one of the commercial FPGA platforms available on the market place. Based on this platform we introduce a new methodology and a flow to investigate the different parts of system dependability at different abstraction levels. The benefits to use the proposed methodology are two fold: first it takes care of the whole system (HW/SW part, mixed RF and wireless part) and second, the hardware platform enables to explore the application's reliability under real environmental conditions in order to study the effect of the environment threats on the system. © 2011 IEEE.

Streaming applications often have latency and throughput requirements due to timing critical signal processing, or the time critical interaction with their environment. Mapping such applications to a multi-core architecture is commonly done at design-time to be able to analyze the complex design-space. However, such design-flows cannot deal with a dynamic platform or a dynamic set of applications. Hardware faults and resources claimed by other applications may render the assumed available resources inaccessible. To avoid the assumptions posed on the state of the platform by a fixed resource allocation, applications should be designed with location transparency in mind. Applications must be analyzed at design-time to determine the required resource budget, independent of which specific resources will be allocated. Sufficient performance can be guaranteed when such applications are mapped onto an architecture in which each resource is arbitrated using a budget scheduler. Within the Cutting edge Reconfigurable ICs for Stream Processing (CRISP) project, a many-core platform is developed that adheres to these requirements. Using the configuration features of the platform, the system is able to control at run-time what resources are being used by the applications. This paper shows that run-time resource allocation can effectively adapt to the available set of resources, providing partial distribution transparency to the user. As an example, a GNSS receiver is mapped to the platform containing faulty hardware components. A few resources remain critical, but in most cases the faulty components can be circumvented, such that adequate resources can be allocated to the application at run-time. © 2011 IEEE.

embedded systems and their design trajectories are becoming increasingly complex, and there is a growing demand for performance, reliability, energy efficiency and low cost. To cope with these challenges, decision making early in the development trajectory needs to be supported by appropriate modeling and analysis. We present an experimental study of a mechanically scanned profiling sonar for Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) obstacle detection and avoidance. We extract potential obstacles from echo returns and suggest a scanning strategy for sonar in this application. We demonstrate with simulations (driven by data collected in the field) the potential for an ASV to rely solely on sonar data to navigate and avoid obstacles in a lake and harbor environment.
