The 10th Workshop on Mobile Computing systems & Applications (HotMobile 09) was held in Santa Cruz, California, US between February 23-24, 2009. The event was attended by a large number of researchers from Asia, Europe, and North America. Two poster sessions were organized at the event, including a general poster session and a demo session. Another poster session was organized for dissertation research presented in the Doctoral Consortium, which was a forum for doctoral students to get comments on their research efforts. The workshop format and size also encouraged better quality discussions and interaction among researchers from academic institutions and the industry. Ryan Scudellari, Duke University presented a paper, called 'We Saw Each Other on the Subway: Secure, Anonymous Proximity-Based Missed Connections' in the first session that showed the way local services had the potential to find and increase interaction among people.

HiperSense is a system for sensing and data visualization. Its sensing part is comprised of a heterogeneous wireless sensor network (WSN) as enabled by infrastructure support for handoff and bridging. Handoff support enables simple, densely deployed, low-complexity, ultra-compact wireless sensor nodes operating at non-trivial data rates to achieve mobility by connecting to different gateways automatically. Bridging between multipleWSN standards is achieved by creating virtual identities on the gateways. The gateways collect data over Fast Ethernet for data post-processing and visualization. Data visualization is done on HIPerWall, a 200-megapixel display wall consisting of 5 rows by 10 columns of 30-inch displays. Such a powerful system is designed to minimize complexity on the sensor nodes while retaining high flexibility and high scalability. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2009.

Operator training without a process model is necessary in certain plant manufacturing industry's applications because the process models from the control theory perspective are still not available. This paper describes an experiment that analyzed the benefits of 3D data visualization integrated in HMI for process control in combination with different types of operator training to obtain process knowledge. The benefits of interactive 3D slider training in identifying errors during operation could be proven.

This paper presents a case study of development of a 6-axis robotic arm controller. The robot is powered by a hydraulic pump. The position of each axis can be derived from its potentiometer voltage. At each and every axis, a servo-valve is employed to control a servo motor. Its relative velocity is related to the servo-valve input. With 2 nd order PID controller, a micro-controller commands movements of all axes. The PID inputs are the six voltages from potentiometers and its outputs are the six DC voltages, which command the six servo-valves. A trajectory file is generated by solving the inverse kinematics problem with some (angular to digital value) conversions. A special case; closed-form calculation is developed to solve kinematics problem. With some constraints it only yields one solution. Experiments show that robot follow the given trajectory with acceptable errors.

Cytocomputation is a computational paradigm based upon the macromolecular activity inside the cytoplasm of the biological cells. This paradigm can be used either as a source of inspiration for proposing novel computational architectures, or as a framework for modeling biological processes at the intracellular and intercellular levels. This paper presents the main characteristics of the paradigm and describes its implementation on the ubichip, a hardware platform specifically designed to support bioinspired architectures.

Supporting multimedia applications over wireless networks has become a very active research topic recently because video applications are prognosticated to receive high demand in future wireless networks, such as ad hoc networks. However, enabling video transmission over wireless ad hoc networks is more challenging than over other wireless networks due to the node mobility, interference and the absence of supporting infrastructure. This paper addresses the problem of video transmission over ad hoc networks. We propose to combine Multiple Description Coding (MDC) with multiple source transport (Multipoint-to-Point: MP2P) video transmission in order to maintain a smooth video streaming over wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we perform comprehensive simulation and test bed experiment in order to show the effect of the proposed MP2P video transfer with MDC for two descriptions case on video streaming over wireless ad hoc networks. The results show that the proposed mechanism successfully improves the video transfer performance in terms of video packet reachability and throughput.

This paper presents a framework for how to use ARQ (automatic repeat request) in combination with real-time worst-case scheduling analysis to be able to support reliable hard real-time communication. We show how to handle retransmissions of erroneous data packets, while still not jeopardizing stated delay guarantees of other packets. We demonstrate this by taking a point-to-point link as an example. Through our simulation studies we have shown that a reduction of the message error rate by several orders of magnitude is possible with a reasonable utilization penalty.

This paper presents a concept of a smart working environment designed to allow true joint-actions of humans and industrial robots. The proposed system perceives its environment with multiple sensor modalities and acts in it with an industrial robot manipulator to assemble capital goods together with a human worker. In combination with the reactive behavior of the robot, safe collaboration between the human and the robot is ***, the system anticipates human behavior, based on knowledge databases and decision processes, ensuring an effective collaboration between the human and robot. As a proof of concept, we introduce a use case where an arm is assembled and mounted on a robot's body. © 2008 IEEE.

Palmprint based personal verification has gained preference over other biometric modalities due to its ease of acquisition, high user acceptance and reliability. This paper presents a novel palmprint based identification approach which uses the textural information available on the palmprint by employing the Contourlet Transform (CT). After establishing the region of interest (ROI), the two dimensional (2-D) spectrums is divided into fine slices, using iterated directional filterbanks. Next, directional energy component for each block from the decomposed subband outputs is computed. The proposed algorithm captures both local and global details in a palmprint as a compact fixed length palm code. Palmprint matching is then performed using normalized Euclidean distance classifier. The proposed algorithm is tested on a total of 7752 palm images, acquired from the standard database of Polytechnic University of Hong Kong. The experimental results demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed system by exhibiting genuine acceptance rate of 88.91%, decidability index of 2.7748 and equal ierror rate of 0.2333%.
