Architecting a missile system for navy theater ballistic missile defense

作者: Patel, A Kjos, K Sasso, F Robinson, S Anant Patel:is senior project engineer for the Standard Missile LEAP Progrma (desgnated SM-X) in the Standard Missile/Vertical Launch System Program Office (PMS 422) of the Navy's Program Executive office for Theater Air Defense (PEO TAD). He is responsbile for the integration and test of the SM-X missile including the third stage rocket motor (TSRM) and the kinetic warhead (KW) assemblies. He received his bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985 Prior to joining PMS 422 he was the project engineer for the shipboard targeting system used during the Terrier LEAP technology demonstration program. he was also tht project manager for the installation and integration of the new threat upgrade (NTU) and cooperative engagement capabilities (CEC) aboard USS Kidd (DDG 993) the first ship to receive CEC during its development test phase. Mr. Patel's other assignments as NTU development lead engineer uncluded providing development and technical direction for modifications to the NTU engagement system for Standard Missile II and III/IIIA compability. kathrin Kjos:is the program development team leader for Hughes Missile Systems Company. She worked on the initial flight demonstraction phase of the program integrating the kill vehicle and advanced solid axial stage into the SM2 Block III ER missile and served as co-chair of the System Safety Working Group. She has thirteen years of experience in system engineering. Previous experience includes missile systems engineering for the Advanced Air-to-Air Missile (AAAM) as well as for laser and radar surveillance systems. She has a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology a master of science degree in system engineering from the University of Southern California and is currently a doctoral candidate in systems architecting at the University of Southern California. He became an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering in 1984. He has been engaged in research on energy conversion especially in MHD power generation. He is a member of the Japan Society of Plasma Science Atomic Energy Society of Japan and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Master's degree in Electrical Engineering in 1994 from Kyoto University. He joined Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. in April 1994. Completed his Dr. of Engineering degree from Kyoto University in 1958. He became a Professor of the same university in 1967. As a member of the shipboard Instrumentation Branch he provides engineering support for shipboard sensors and switches and provides support in the research assessment and testing of emerging technologies for use in Naval applications. He graduated from Drexel University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and in 1993 with a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management. After receiving his B.S. degree in 1990 he served with the Mechanical Measurements Section providing support in vibration and modal analysis rotor balancing and stress/strain analysis before joining the Shipboard Instrumentation Branch in 1992. He is currently a member of ASNE and SNAME. Anthony J. Price is also with NSWCCD Philadelphia. As a project engineer in the Instrumentation Technologies Branch he provides research development design and in-service engineering support to the Navy fleet in temperature and heat stress monitoring systems. She worked as a Royal Society visiting scientist at the Cambridge University Engineering Departmnet duing 1990–1991. She has worked on many aspects of electron optics including theoretical and experimental studies of lens systems and electron guns for lithography and microscopy. Following her Ph.D. she worked as a post-doctoral worker at Cambridge and has now returned to the Institute of Electronics Academia Sinica in Beijing. Alec Broers is Head of the Department of Engineering at Cambridge University and Master of Churchill College. He was educaated at Melbourne University (B.Sc. Physics and Electronics) and Cambridge University (B.A. Ph.D. Sc.D.) Engineering. After completing his Ph.D. in 1965 he spent sixteen years as a researcher at the IBM Thomas J Watson Research Center in New York. During this time he worked on the application of high resolution electron X-ray and ultra-violet light optics to microscopy and to the fabrication of microelectronic components. He held a series of management positions and was appointed an IBM Fellow in 1977. From 1980 to 1983 he worked in IBM's East Fishkill laboratory where he became responsible for the advanced development of semiconductor devices. In 1983 he was appointed to the IBM Corporate Technology Committee and subsequently became a member of IBM's Science Advisory Committee. He returned to Cambridge in 1984 where he continues his research on the fabrication of nanometre-size devices. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society the Royal Academy of Engineering the Institution of Electrical Engineers and the Institute of Physics and is a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Engineering.

He received a Master of Science degree from the same institution in 1989. Upon graduation he joined Bell-Northern Research where he studied the performance aspects of broadband networks including SONET frame relay and ATM systems. In 1994 he formed a new group to spearhead the investigation of performance requirements for BISDN services. Marek Wernik is Senior Manager Broadband Systems and Services in BNR Ottawa Canada. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Warsaw Technical University Poland in 1973 and 1978 respectively. Dr. Wernik worked as assistant professor at Warsaw Technical University and at Oran University of Technology Algeria conducting research in the fields of digital signal processing and radio communications measurement systems. In 1984 he joined BNR Advanced Technology group where he took part in the exploratory work on photonic and broadband switching and fibre network planning. Since then he has been working on various aspects of broadband networks and ATM systems. Between 1988 and 1990 he was a manager responsible for analysis and evaluation of traffic management and performance of ATM networks. As Senior Manager Dr. Wernik is currently responsible for broadband network design and planning in BNR's Systems Engineering Division. His responsibilities include in particular definition of management and control for ATM networks work with telecommunications carriers to identify requirements and plan deployment of broadband services and networks broadband product planning support and ATM Forum technical representation. Dr. Wernik is a Member of the IEEE Communications Society and has been actively involved in co-operation with Canadian universities supporting research in the field of broadband communications.
