Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, and adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most common subtype. Exploiting the potential value of the histopathology images can promote precision medicine in oncology. Tissue segmentation is the basic upstream task of histopathology image analysis. Existing deep learning models have achieved superior segmentation performance but require sufficient pixel-level annotations, which is time-consuming and expensive. To enrich the label resources of LUAD and to alleviate the annotation efforts, we organize this challenge WSSS4LUAD to call for the outstanding weakly-supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) techniques for histopathology images of LUAD. Participants have to design the algorithm to segment tumor epithelial, tumor-associated stroma and normal tissue with only patch-level labels. This challenge includes 10,091 patch-level annotations (the training set) and over 130 million labeled pixels (the validation and test sets), from 87 WSIs (67 from GDPH, 20 from TCGA). All the labels were generated by a pathologist-in-the-loop pipeline with the help of AI models and checked by the label review board. Among 532 registrations, 28 teams submitted the results in the test phase with over 1,000 submissions. Finally, the first place team achieved mIoU of 0.8413 (tumor: 0.8389, stroma: 0.7931, normal: 0.8919). According to the technical reports of the top-tier teams, CAM is still the most popular approach in WSSS. Cutmix data augmentation has been widely adopted to generate more reliable samples. With the success of this challenge, we believe that WSSS approaches with patch-level annotations can be a complement to the traditional pixel annotations while reducing the annotation efforts. Textiles are essential to humans in a variety of ways, especially clothing. However, the speed at which they end up in landfills is astonishing (one garbage truck per second), posing a severe risk to the environment, if the trend continues. Governments and responsible organizations are starting to make calls to different stakeholders to redesign the textile chain from linear to circular economy. In this perspective, we highlight some of the possible approaches to be undertaken including the need for the creation of renewable raw materials sources, rethinking production, maximum use and reuse of textile products, reproduction, and recycling strategies, redistribution of textiles to new and parallel markets, and improvising means to extend the textiles lifetime.

Globally, respiratory diseases are the leading cause of death, making it essential to develop an automatic respiratory sounds software to speed up diagnosis and reduce physician workload. A recent line of attempts have been proposed to predict accurately, but they have yet been able to provide a satisfactory generalization performance. In this contest, we invited the community to develop more accurate and generalized respiratory sound algorithms. A starter code is provided to standardize the submissions and lower the barrier. New testing set is prepared to evaluate the generalization performance of the submissions. Top 3 teams will present their work at IEEE BioCAS 2023 conference. © 2023 IEEE.

The Sentence Pattern Structure (SPS) is a formalized syntactic structure based on sentence-based grammar, which presents the structure of sentences in a customized diagram form. This paper proposes an SPS system covering three aspects: clause structure, lexical structure, and inter-sentence structure, elucidating its design philosophy and parsing principles of sentence-based grammar. Finally, an overview of the engineering progress of building a Chinese treebank based on this system is provided. © 2024 China National Conference on Computational Linguistics.

Ferroelectrics are essential in low-dimensional memory devices for multi-bit storage and high-density integration. A polar structure is a necessary premise for ferroelectricity, mainly existing in compounds. However, it is usually rare in elemental materials, causing a lack of spontaneous electric polarization. Here, we report an unexpected room-temperature ferroelectricity in few-chain Te nanowires. Out-of-plane ferroelectric loops and domain reversal are observed by piezoresponse force microscopy. Through density functional theory, we attribute the ferroelectricity to the ion-displacement created by the interlayer interaction between lone pair electrons. Ferroelectric polarization can induce a strong field effect on the transport along the Te chain, supporting a self-gated field-effect transistor. It enables a nonvolatile memory with high in-plane mobility, zero supply voltage, multilevel resistive states, and a high on/off ratio. Our work provides new opportunities for elemental ferroelectrics with polar structures and paves a way towards applications such as low-power dissipation electronics and computing-in-memory devices. © 2022, CC BY.

Prophet: SSD Failure Analysis and Prediction Guided by Flash Reliability Characteristics in Data Centers

Solid-state drives (SSDs) are massively deployed in various fields, especially in data centers, for their excellent cost-effectiveness. However, SSDs may fail due to their imperfect manufacturing processes, resulting in system-level failures and even downtime in data centers. This makes SSD failure prediction critical. Current studies focus on dealing with data missing, numerical normalization, and other statistical issues in using machine learning methods, but the consideration of the reliability characteristics of the underlying flash media of SSDs and the timeliness (time duration between predicted failure and real failure) of SSD failure prediction result is missing. In this work, we study the failure characteristics of over 200,000 drives from industry data centers over a 4-year period, as well as daily data. The relationship between SSD attribute values and failures is first investigated. Then, we analyzed the SSD failure characteristics from several aspects (causes, differences between failures, and timeliness of prediction results) relying on flash reliability characteristics. Based on these, a novel SSD failure prediction method (Prophet) is proposed. Specifically, Prophet contains the following two components. First, to cope with the differences between failures, a diff-state method is proposed for differential machine learning modeling of SSDs in different "States". We define the "State" of an SSD, which represents the range of values in which the SSD currently lies in terms of some key attributes. Through flash reliability characteristics, we distinguish between different failures before training the model to obtain accurate predictions of different failure behaviors. Second, a recovery period method is proposed to enhance the timeliness of SSD failure prediction result by designing the sample selection method. Vehicle Edge Computing (VEC) assists vehicles in performing latency-sensitive tasks by deploying resources near the vehicle. Designing an incentive mechanism for vehicles and VEC is crucial for realizing an intelligent transmission system. Considering the rationality of resource allocation, we model the utility functions of the VEC and the vehicle, which are used as optimization objectives. Specifically, the VEC allocates resources through pricing to maximize revenue under resource-constrained conditions, and the vehicle weighs payments against energy consumption to determine offloading and resource allocation. Given the vehicle movement and the variable channel state, we use the Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithm to solve these optimization problems. To reduce the learning difficulty of the DRL algorithm in complex VEC scenarios with multiple optimization variables, we propose a Pricing-Driven Resource Allocation (PDRA) algorithm that performs mobility-aware task offloading and calculates the optimal values of the optimization variables in the utility function of the vehicle to reduce the decision dimension. Furthermore, we also propose a DRL-based Pricing-Driven Dynamic Resource Allocation (DPDDRA) algorithm to achieve efficient resource allocation. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed algorithms can reduce the learning difficulty while maximizing VEC and vehicle revenue in complex VEC scenarios. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Using neural networks to explore spatial patterns and temporal dynamics of human brain activities has been an important yet challenging problem because it is hard to manually design the most optimal neural networks. There have been several promising deep learning methods that can decompose neuroscientifically meaningful spatial-temporal patterns from 4D fMRI data, e.g., the deep sparse recurrent auto-encoder (DSRAE). However, those previous studies still depend on hand-crafted neural network structures and hyperparameters, which are not optimal in various senses. In this paper, we employ evolutionary algorithms to optimize such DSRAE neural networks by minimizing the expected loss of the generated architectures on data reconstruction via the neural architecture search (NAS) framework, named NAS-DSRAE. The optimized NAS-DSRAE is evaluated by the publicly available human connectome project (HCP) fMRI datasets and our promising results showed that NAS-DSRAE has sufficient generalizability to model the spatial-temporal features and is better than the hand-crafted model. To our best knowledge, the proposed NAS-DSRAE is among the earliest NAS models that can extract connectome-scale meaningful spatial-temporal brain networks from 4D fMRI data. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Unsupervised domain adaptation person re-identification (Re-ID) aims to identify pedestrian images within an unlabeled target domain with an auxiliary labeled source-domain dataset. Many existing works attempt to recover reliable identity information by considering multiple homogeneous networks. And take these generated labels to train the model in the target domain. However, these homogeneous networks identify people in approximate subspaces and equally exchange their knowledge with others or their mean net to improve their ability, inevitably limiting the scope of available knowledge and putting them into the same mistake. This paper proposes a Dual-level Asymmetric Mutual Learning method (DAML) to learn discriminative representations from a broader knowledge scope with diverse embedding spaces. Specifically, two heterogeneous networks mutually learn knowledge from asymmetric subspaces through the pseudo label generation in a hard distillation manner. The knowledge transfer between two networks is based on an asymmetric mutual learning manner. The teacher network learns to identify both the target and source domain while adapting to the target domain distribution based on the knowledge of the student. Meanwhile, the student network is trained on the target dataset and employs the ground-truth label through the knowledge of the teacher. Extensive experiments in Market-1501, CUHK-SYSU, and MSMT17 public datasets verified the superiority of DAML over state-of-the-arts. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The construction cost index is an important indicator of the construction industry. Predicting CCI has important practical significance. This paper combines information fusion with machine learning, and proposes a multi-feature fusion (MFF) module for time series forecasting. Compared with the convolution module, the MFF module is a module that extracts certain features. Experiments have proved that the combination of MFF module and multi-layer perceptron has a relatively good prediction effect. The MFF neural network model has high prediction accuracy and efficient prediction efficiency.
