Due to different imaging conditions, a fingerprint image may suffer from problems like translation, rotation, scaling and elastic distortion. A fingerprint recognition algorithm should address these problems for efficiency. One solution is to uniquely detect a reference point and align the fingerprint image based on the detected reference point. Accurate estimation of reference point is one of the major challenges in an automatic fingerprint recognition system. This paper presents a novel method to estimate a reference point for all types of fingerprints by tracing the chain coded contour of a fingerprint image. Chain codes are used to represent an image contour by a connected sequence of straight line segments of specified length and direction. The algorithm identifies the unique reference point as the point of maximum curvature changes in the fingerprint convex ridges. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm can uniquely estimate a reference point for all types of fingerprints.

A new approach to extract building objects was proposed. Firstly, rival penalized competitive learning(RPCL) algorithm was used to improve segmentation granularity of super-pixel algorithm based on graph theory;Secondly, the spatial envelope was used to classify the image patches using support vector machine (SVM) classifier, and distinguish building and non-building category in the image;Finally, building hypothesis in the image was verified based on structure of the building category. The experiments show on standard dataset that the proposed algorithm outperforms other similar algorithms on building extraction, and also meet the real-time requirements in general application.

Label placement is very important when we display the electronic map. It will affect the beauty of electronic map. Furthermore, in order to display label placement in real-time, the computational complexity can not be too high. A novel algorithm of label placement is expounded based on the thinking of grid. It first divides the screen simply, then those three objects of points, arcs and polygons will be dealt with. The label configuration is reasonable, and does not result in any overlap. The experimental result indicates this algorithm is simple and effective. It can meet the demand of high quality map dynamic label placement and is successfully applied in commercial GIS.

The type of the leaf vein can be a useful parameter in automatic identification of plant species. Leaf vein extraction is the precondition of discriminating the leaf vein type. In this paper a new method is presented for leaf vein extraction based on mathematical morphology. Firstly, the color image of the plant leaf is transformed to gray image according to the hue and intensity information. Secondly, a combined operation of mathematical morphology is applied to the image to eliminate the color overlap between the whole leaf vein and the whole background. Thirdly, image segmentation is performed with OSTU method. Finally, the leaf vein can be got after some processing on details. Experiments have been conducted with several images and the results show the effectiveness of the method. The basic idea of the method is also applicable to other linear objects extraction.

In machine translation(MT) practice,there is an urgent need for constructing a set of Chinese-to-English aspect transferring rules to define the transferring *** integrated feature set was used to generalize and justify the Chinese-to-English transferring rule of the 'ZHE' aspect(ZHE Rule).A ZHE classification model was built in this *** impacts of each set of temporal,lexical aspectual,and syntactic features,and their integrated impacts,on the accuracy of the ZHE Rule were *** 600 misclassified corpus sentences were manually examined.A 10-fold cross-validation was used with a decision tree *** main results are:(1) The ZHE Rule was generalized and justified to have a higher accuracy under the two metrics:the precision rate and the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC).(2) The temporal,lexical aspectual,and syntactic feature sets have an integrated contribution to the accuracy of the ZHE *** syntactic and temporal features have an impact on ZHE aspect derivations,while the lexical aspectual features are not predictive of ZHE aspect derivation.(3) While associated with active verbs,the ZHE aspect can denote a perfective *** study suggests that the temporal and syntactic features are the predictive ZHE aspect classification features and that the ZHE Rule with an overall precision rate of 80.1% is accurate enough to be further explored in MT *** machine learning method,decision tree,can be applied to the automatic aspect transferring in MT research and aspectual interpretations in linguistic research.
